A great aid to understanding Pro Tools LE and M-Powered
By Bruce Bartlett
Pro Tools LE and Pro Tools M-Powered software and hardware let you enter the world of Pro Tools - the most popular computer recording system - for under $500. Mike Collins' book on those version 7.0 systems tells all you need to know about using those new tools successfully.
Maybe you've thought about buying or upgrading Pro Tools, but are confused about the options. The book's comparison of Pro Tools HD, LE and M-Powered software will help you sort out the differences among those versions. Similarly, the book lets you know what the hardware choices are.
One chapter explains the features of the Mix, Edit and Transport windows, including all the menus. Another deals with file handling and organization, an important topic for any DAW user. Tempos, grooves and Beat Detective are given a thorough treatment. There's complete coverage of MIDI and virtual instruments. You'll also find extensive information on recording, editing, and mixdown. Appendices cover backups and transfers, the DV Toolkit, and further reading.
The book's layout is clean and attractive. Thanks to hundreds of color screen shots, you'll know exactly what the author is referring to in the text. I particularly like the highlighted notes and tips that offer essential information not found elsewhere.
Collins' writing style is clear and conversational; the material is well organized. A reader who knows the basics of recording equipment and techniques should have no problem following the explanations in this book. If you've been frustrated while learning Pro Tools, or confused about the options, this book can help you get out of the woods.

Excellent Pro Tools 7 LE Book !
By R V Gable
This book is very informative. Many pictures of actual screen shots. First it goes through the various Digidesign hardware. Then into Pro Tools itself. I am learning alot. It is so much more thorough than the instruction manual that came with my MBox 2. If you are new to Pro Tools 7 LE and can buy only 1 book, then this is the book to get. You'll be very pleased.

save yourself the trouble and buy another title
By Bill Kahler
This is the type of book you pick up at your local retailer and it looks really good - color photos, layout,, quality paper etc. After you use the book for a while you realize something's not in the index that should be. Later that day you realize tons of things are missing and then you find items in the text (not indexed) that are not even fully explained. Today I tried to find info about midi sync, ticks and samples, basic items like how to use cut and copy. It's just not there. Terms found in the menus on the sceen should all be in the index, in my humble opinion. I bought this book to learn PT and decide whether or not to go with a Digidesign or M-Audio system. On a one to ten scale for a "missing manual" I'd give it a 2. In addition it is not laid out very well. I would think a sensible way to organize a book like this would be to set it up through the various steps of doing a project and then putting some of the finer details later. This book dwells on details in some sections but tells almost nothing about some of the simpler tasks.
