About the Author
John Leland is the author of Aliens in the Backyard: Plant and Animal Imports into America, ForeWord Magazine's 2005 Book of the Year for Popular Culture, and Porcher's Creek: Lives between the Tides, Second Place Winner in the 2003 Phillip D. Reed Memorial Award of the Southern Environmental Law Center. Leland is a professor of English at the Virginia Military Institute in Lexington.

Good book, but perhaps I expected too much

As I also live in Virginia, and hiking the Blue Ridge and reading nature books are both my hobbies, I eagerly awaited the publication of this book (In fact, while waiting, I also bought and read the author's other book, Porcher's Creek: Lives Between the Tides). I bought this book the first day it came out and now I guess I will be the first Amazon reviewer.
I think this is a pretty good book, weaving the natural and human histories of the Shenandoah Valley and its environs in 25 short essays. Among my favorites are: The Natural Bridge, Maple Syrup, Poison Ivy, Sassafras, etc.
However, I am somewhat disappointed with two things: first, the essays in this book do not cover the whole Shenandoah Valley; most of them are about things around Lexington (where the author lives) and Rock Bridge County. Most noticeably, there isn't much on the Shenandoah River itself. This isn't a defect in the book itself, perhaps, but the title made me believe that this would be a more "comprehensive" book about the valley. Second, there isn't much about the region's fauna (except some insects). But, I understand that is probably more of a personal taste or choice issue; on the plus side, the book does contain excellent description of the region's geology.
I also think some of the sentences in this book are somewhat long and a bit awkward, take, for example, one in The Shenandoah Sea:
"It's tempting to think that the something sat somewhere behind you to the west, since the rock sinks down that way, but the ones who know say that these west-sinking sandstones are part of a huge section of eastern Virginia crumpled up and pushed so far west by the wandering continent of Africa that the rock formations visible in the valley repeat themselves underground, as if a massive stack of rugs had folded upon itself."
(That's one sentence, in case you have not noticed, which occupies five and half lines in the book.)
To be sure, overall the writing is pretty good, you just occasionally run into these sentences. I feel like some other authors' (e.g. Robert Finch) writing is perhaps a tad smoother and flows more freely. Overall I liked the book and would read the author's future publications again, but I have to -- somewhat reluctantly -- deduct a star for the things listed above.

A fascinating and educational read, not to be missed

From dinosaurs to gruesome conflict, the modern Shenandoah Valley has a special place in the hearts of South Carolina's outdoor enthusiasts. "Learning the Valley: Excursions into the Shenandoah Valley" is a travel memoir and nature appreciation read as he reflects on Shenandoah Valley as he takes a trip with his son through the valley and looks at the events that have promoted its fame, on top of its natural beauty. "Learning the Valley" is a fascinating and educational read, not to be missed.

Ecological trips in the valley

This book is not equal to Annie Dillard's Pilgrim at Tinker Creek but it often reads much like it and Leland's book has an array of topics such as geology, plants, animals and human developments - all interacting. The descriptions of relationships and the studies of how they interact will illustrate ideas and processes that the reader may not know or want to think about later. The author also, allows us to know many of his responses to the experiences and with his son over time. The size of the book makes it very practical to take on a walk in the woods, and the chapter/topics can be read in almost any sequence if the reader is plagued with discipline problems.
