a high quality, very condensed manual

this thin book isn't the bible of swat (there isn't probably such thing) but is a very good condensed overview, its one overriding quality being COMMON SENSE (which isn't common at all); it is many years since i read it, but as i remember it, for example...
1) it dispatches the sniper rifle hardware in about one paragraph (which for me it is ok, truth being that any centerfire rifle is up to the task, at the typical ranges of police action);
2) same for all the other gun hardware;
3) it is budget conscious, telling how to get proper equipment at less cost, which shows author doesn't live in a theoretical vacuum where everything is perfect, etc;
4) same for manpower, training, etc;
5) tactics are geared to the part time volunteer of small department, that can perhaps pull a four man team in time of crisis; this is important because i have seen manuals that stipulate something like twenty four men to clear a room, which is simply ludicrous (building blocks of eight men team, one team to actually enter room, one team to cover corridor ahead, one team to cover corridor rearwards; sigh...);
6) there are many real-world tips for training (how to get hotel, etc, owners to agree for a training mock hostage rescue in his place: allow him to play bad guy role); the proper mindset for scenario training: isn't the true thing (so not kick partner into balls), issue isn't winning but learning, must be fun if possible (an adult game)...
7) the rappel and martial arts tips are concise and ok;
8) the psichological characterization of opposition is best (and shortest) i ever seen: criminals, psychos (neurotics, psychotics, psycopaths), activists; each one with a short definition, what makes him tick, and how to handle him; i have asked psychologists and this guy provides a better and more useful model, psychologists just talk generalities without useful next minute application.
9) easily each paragraph or photograph of this book could be expanded into a whole book (just think how broad are issues like shooting, martial arts, tactics, psychology, etc); a professional would need a set of books; but a short book that can be read at a sitting and can be understood even by childs (as one reviewer puts negatively), just a few well chosen points (each one open to infinite development), is a very good thing, an uncluttered frame of reference.
10) don't confuse quantity and quality; this book has quality (of the real world and common sense kind)

A Giant Picture Book For Kids...Of little value to pros

Ouch! did I make a mistake when I bought this one. It was good for my 12yr old though, he really enjoyed all the nifty b&w pictures, and the book was so basic he could read it. If your looking for a serious book on law enforcement avoid this one!

BEING AN AVID READER OF SPECIAL TACTICAL TRAINING BOOKS I FOUND THIS BOOK INFORMATIVE AND HELPFUL IN ALL OF THE BASIC POLICE SPECIAL TACTICS. ALTHOUGH I HAVE READ OTHER BOOKS WITH COLOR PHOTOS AND FULL OF BIG WORDS, THE PRINT IN THIS BOOK WAS EASY TO READ AND TO UNDERSTAND. THE AUTHOR WAS NOT TRYING TO TALK OVER MY HEAD. I HOPE NOW TO FIND MORE ADVANCED VERSIONS OF THIS TYPE OF PRINT TO FURTHER MY OWN EDUCATION IN THIS FIELD.
THIS IS A MUST FOR THE NEW TEAM MEMBER
