About the Author
Senior Product Designer for editors with Avid Technology, Inc., and has been editing on Media Composer since 1992. For the last several years Greg has traveled the world speaking at major conferences and seminars keeping Avid users and instructors up-to-date on areas such as advanced editing techniques, online process, color correction, and effects design. Prior to joining the product design team he was the Principal Instructor for Avid's Training Services Group, focusing on finishing and effects.
Bayes is the Product Manager for Final Cut Pro at Apple. For 8 years he was the Principal Product Designer for Media Composer, Symphony and DS Nitris at Avid Technology. Steve has specified the design of Avid products based on his years of editing, instructing and interviewing Avid users. He is the author of the book "The Avid Handbook: Basic and Intermediate Techniques for the Media Composer” which will have a 4th edition in December 2003. Steve also spent two years as Senior Instructor for Avid Educational Services, teaching Avid students and instructors in the U.S., Europe and Asia. He has also written and developed several advanced Avid classes including the Master Editor Workshop. Previously, Steve was Senior Editor at several production companies in Boston, Massachusetts and edited in the New England market for ten years.

'Avid' works on several levels

Experienced editors in need of more knowledge will find The Avid Handbook: Advanced Techniques, Strategies, and Survival Information for Avid Editing Systems, 5th Edition the ideal guide to this particular nonlinear editing system. It is not for rookies or people trying to move over from other systems but rather for those who have had at least some exposure to Avid, a supplement to the company's own guidebooks to the system.
The book offers dozens of workflow efficiencies, tips and little tricks that make Media Composer 3.0 work better. Nonlinear editors working on this system will find the book an invaluable tool to improving their skills and make their work go more smoothly.
New or updated in this fifth edition is information on:
*High-definition and standard definition formats and workflows
*Video finishing workflows
*Color-Correction and grading capability enhancements
*Expanded discussion on editing and trim
There's another really good aspect to this book and that is its formatting. The type is larger than that found in many other handbooks and it's a very easy font to read (Sorry, I don't know what it is.) But when you're frustrated with a technology that you don't understand and are leafing through a book looking for answers, having something that's extremely easy on the eyes can be a huge help.

Somewhat unclear and not that clear cut. Needed instructor's assistance.

This was the prescribed text for my editing class that was using Avid and it didn't make me as proficient in the software as I wanted to be. I ended up asking the instructor for help everytime I read the instructions.

I have to book down my mouse and this is one

Excellent book, killed it. It was very enjoyable and I learned a lot. In the future I will continue this writer, to see what else makes publications. See if you are encouraged to write about real-time graphics inside avid with Brainstorm Studio.
