Review
RICHMOND TIMES-DISPATCH (USA)

The Golden Age of British mystery; Agatha Christie, the English village, the manor house, the baffling murder are stylishly re-created.  A sparkling, intelligent mystery.

Myshelf.com

A rattling good plot, period detail, red herrings and constant action. The best crime series debut of this year.

Rachel A Hyde

Historical Novel Magazine

Thoroughly researched both for the details of the war and the social conventions of the 1920s. Jack is an attractive sleuth and there are plenty of possible suspects, danger in abundance and a cleverly contrived denouement.

Mystery Women Magazine

This is a good read - characters are varied, developments are fast and the denouement is superb.

From the Author
I've always loved the Golden Age classic crime, with smokey old London, a country house and the "guilty villages" of Agatha Christie and Dorothy L Sayers. I wanted to write a book that  (in my own mind at least!) captured some of that charm, character, pace and sheer enjoyment.   I wanted, as well, to ground the events firmly and historically "After the War" .  The First World War shattered all the old certainties; nothing was ever the same again.   I visited the French and Belgian battlefields and discovered the miles of tunnels that lie beneath the chalk of the Somme - and the story of "Fete" started to come together.  There was a secret in those tunnels... a secret that had been buried for years.  I had my story.

From the Inside Flap
It's 1922 and Jack Haldean, young writer and former Royal Flying Corps pilot is enjoying the local village fete on a beautiful summer's day in the heart of Sussex.  This village life sums up the idyllic pre-war England he dreamed of during the war.  The idyll is shattered when Jack's fellow officer, Jeremy Boscombe, is found dead in the fortune-teller's tent.  Jack realizes that the roots of the crime go back to the Battle of the Somme, when a party of British soldiers were betrayed, ambushed and killed in the network of tunnels under the Augier Ridge. The trail  leads inexorably back to the Somme and it is those silent tunnels that Jack faces his final enemy - one who must kill to survive.

First Jack Haldean Mystery a Great Read
By John Granger
My introduction to Jack Haldean mysteries came on a trip to Scotland where I read 'Trouble Brewing,' the most recent in the series. I loved it (see my review on that book's page) and immediately ordered 'Fete' to start at the beginning and work my way up to the end. The first is as good as the last, which is really saying something.

I was startled that the reviews for the book at Amazon.com (US) were so tepid. Check out the Amazon.co.uk reviews for criticism based less on the patronizing "I figured it out before it was over!" (sure you did, dear...) than familiarity with the genre, the period of UK history involved, and the masters of this sort of writing. On all counts, Dolores Gordon-Smith gets high marks and her British readers and admirers are legion.

The characters are sufficiently realistic to be engaging and Dickens-esque enough to invite reflection and attachment. The plotting is tight and clues come per pace with the reader seeing everything amateur sleuth (and mystery writer) Jack sees. The setting is wonderfully reminiscent of the best Sayers and Christie drawing room of the country manor set pieces. Gordon-Smith breathes fresh life into a neglected sort of murder mystery -- neglected because frighteningly difficult and because the standards are so high and so familiar to so many.

My favorite parts? Jack's relationships with servicemen he knew doing the war, good and bad. All of them ring true. A close second are Ms. Gordon-Smith's descriptions of rooms and places with telling detail. I always have that feeling that I'm there in a Jack Haldean story -- and, no, I've never been to a ruined chateau basement in France or a forgotten English barn.

This is great writing, great story-telling, and great fun. I am ordering 'Mad About the Boy' and can hardly way to jump in.

Nicely done
By woodapple
I thought this was a very well-written mystery. Set in the early 1920s in England, the story features Major Jack Haldean, a writer who dabbles in solving crime.

While visiting family in the countryside, Jack becomes involved in solving several murders. The murders end up affecting his own family--but they also date back to WWI.

The author ties it all nicely together and the ending surprised me (but then again, I can hardly ever figure out "whodunit"). This is a nice, cozy sort of mystery.

Superbly Researched, Carefully Crafted Novel
By Donna
Jack Haldean is one of my favorite fictional sleuths and an absolute must for fans of World War I and 1920's English novels. A perfect English summer's day turns nasty when one of Jack's best friends is murdered and the plot gets more involved from there with clues for Jack and the reader planted subtly along the way and the action increases when the action moves across the channel to wartime France. Charming characters you'll want to get to know better in subsequent novels.
