Letting Stories Breathe: A Socio-Narratology, by Arthur W. Frank

Stories accompany us through life from birth to death. But they do not merely entertain, inform, or distress us—they show us what counts as right or wrong and teach us who we are and who we can imagine being. Stories connect people, but they can also disconnect, creating boundaries between people and justifying violence. In Letting Stories Breathe, Arthur W. Frank grapples with this fundamental aspect of our lives, offering both a theory of how stories shape us and a useful method for analyzing them. Along the way he also tells stories: from folktales to research interviews to remembrances.

Frank’s unique approach uses literary concepts to ask social scientific questions: how do stories make life good and when do they endanger it? Going beyond theory, he presents a thorough introduction to dialogical narrative analysis, analyzing modes of interpretation, providing specific questions to start analysis, and describing different forms analysis can take. Building on his renowned work exploring the relationship between narrative and illness, Letting Stories Breathe expands Frank’s horizons further, offering a compelling perspective on how stories affect human lives.

Review
“Frank is a beautiful writer and this is a terrific book. His socio-narratology, while clearly drawing on the work of earlier scholars, is genuinely original, and his mastery of narrative theory, facility with a range of theoretical traditions of narrative analysis, deep fondness for literature, and capacity as a storyteller—all these together allow him to make a very persuasive case.” (Cheryl Mattingly, University of Southern California)

“This is a powerful book. Arthur Frank already has a reputation as a sophisticated and sensitive interpreter of how stories shape human experience, and Letting Stories Breathe will cement his legacy. Moving beyond his important earlier work on illness stories, Frank outlines both a general theory (socio-narratology) and a method (dialogic narrative analysis) for understanding and studying ‘how stories act’ in the lives of individuals and groups. His writing is consistently clear and concise as well as, at times, moving and deeply personal, conveying in its style and language the very ethical commitments that are central to the argument of the book. Frank is himself a good storyteller and he weaves argument and illustration together in just the right balance.”

(Joseph E. Davis, University of Virginia)

“Every chapter offers shrewd observations: on storytelling practice, on how to analyze narrative, on the ways in which narratives deal with the ‘biographical disruption’ that serious disease brings to the stories people tell themselves about their lives, and on the questions and ethical judgments embedded in stories.” (Choice)

How stories live, breathe and act upon us
By barbara a. whittingham
Arthur W. Frank shows how we "think with stories," how we are "born into stories" and, if we cooperate by allowing them to "do things with (us) people, we can become part of their perpetuation. Stories act upon us and use us for their own purposes, which may be for good or for ill. That is perhaps how we, as agents, act back to influence the story's narrative to change and develop it, to serve the life we choose.

This is a fascinating book, well-written, if not poetic in the telling. This book develops further Frank's work on illness stories. "Socio-narratology" is the general theory, if an awkward phrase. Frank demonstrates how the world is social in it's essence and how people are born into, live into, develop, and die in story. This is a thought-provoking read for the general reader as well as scholar.

Some of Frank's claims about the role and power of stories a little inflated. However well worth reading to inform work in working with narratives in people's lives

Excellant study of the power of storytelling as a primary form of communication long before written word. Storytelling is our native language.

Too Close to the Sun: Growing Up in the Shadow of my Grandparents, Franklin and Eleanor, by Curtis Roosevelt

Curtis Roosevelt was three when he and his sister, Eleanor, arrived at the White House soon after their grandfather’s inauguration. The country’s “First Grandchildren,” a pint-sized double act, they were known to the media as “Sistie and Buzzie.”

In this rich memoir, Roosevelt brings us into “the goldfish bowl,” as his family called it—that glare of public scrutiny to which all presidential households must submit. He recounts his misadventures as a hapless kid in an unforgivably formal setting and describes his role as a tiny planet circling the dual suns of Franklin and Eleanor Roosevelt.

Blending self-abasement, humor, awe and affection, Too Close to the Sun is an intimate portrait of two of the most influential and inspirational figures in modern American history—and a thoughtful exploration of the emotional impact of growing up in their irresistible aura.

From Publishers Weekly
Curtis Roosevelt was barely three years old when his grandfather FDR became president and he and his older sister, Eleanor, and mother, Anna Roosevelt (recently separated from the children's father), joined Franklin and Eleanor as residents in the White House for much of the next 12 years. Curtis and Sis quickly became known through the press as Sistie and Buzzie, whose slide and monkey bars adorned the White House lawn. Curtis writes affectionately and beautifully about his grandparents, but he also describes their large, sheltering presence as a double-edged sword. Life outside the protective—and isolated—White House cocoon, he writes, became hugely distorted, especially for an impressionable youngster like me. Along with relaying a rich and fascinating cornucopia of anecdotes involving family life, Curtis devotes thoughtful discussion to the complex subject of reflected fame and its impact on young people growing up as the scions of celebrity. No one alive today knew Franklin and Eleanor quite as well as Curtis, their eldest grandson, and his sister. Thus this splendid, intimate memoir represents an invaluable addition to the literature of the Roosevelt era. Illus. (Nov.)

From Booklist
As Franklin and Eleanor Roosevelt’s grandchildren, the author and his sister lived in or visited the White House throughout FDR’s presidency. Reflecting on his formative years, Curtis Roosevelt covers the constellation of personalities in the presidential family, many of whose members wrote their own memoirs of life in the FDR clan. Curtis’ viewpoint on the family dynamics is dominated by something with which many readers can identify: divorce. In the wake of his parents’ split, young Curtis was stressed by dealing with the hostility his mother and grandmother bore for his father and by adjusting to a new stepfather. Finding an emotional haven in a warm relationship with FDR and FDR’s mother, the author fondly recounts his visits with them and, less fondly, the difficulties of growing up as one of America’s most famous boys. Plainly, Curtis Roosevelt has reflected deeply on the mixture of happiness and unhappiness in his childhood, which he expresses with a genuine feeling to which readers will positively respond. --Gilbert Taylor

Review
Kirkus, October 1, 2008
“FDR’s eldest grandson nostalgically recounts his childhood growing up in close proximity to his charismatic grandparents…. He captures the delight of living at the White House from the perspective of a child given access to presidential marches, receptions and afternoon teas.”

How Youth is Bruised By the Mighty
By VerbRiver
Curtis Roosevelt was a child star. The oldest grandson of FDR, he and his sister became media celebrities before the term existed. In the case of Curtis (Buzzie) his childhood was swallowed by it.

His family insisted on propriety and tradition. Children apparently were accepted and graded according to a cultural template emphasizing the outcome as an adult rather than the process of becoming one. In a world where the governess or the nanny or the hired person became the substitute parent, childhood seemed to be tolerated by the family more than enjoyed by the child.

This lovely yet discomfiting book turns out to be about bewilderment and disappointment in a seductive world sadly short on adults warm enough, open enough or patient enough to make a child feel truly loved and secure. The author explains rather than complains while recounting childhood with a grandmother (Eleanor) with problems of her own and a mother (Anna) who appears more interested in satisfying her parents than understanding her children. Glitter and privilege rub hard on the boy. He notes that among his mother and four uncles (the FDR children) there were 16 divorces. His biological father was slowly walled off from him. His step father committed suicide not long after he joined the list of Roosevelt marriages gone wrong.

What fascinates most in this book is that these are the words of one of the very last who were actually there to witness the Roosevelt years first hand from inside the family. The boy was barely more than a toddler when his grandfather was elected president. The author's recollections are bolstered by a huge list in the acknowledgement section, people who evidently provided added perspective, and letters, and reminders. You get the sense that this is something of a reconstruction, difficult to write, likely a product of many painful revisions. The result is a book of memoirs, a man trying very hard to record what it was like to be a boy in a world of Depression and War that baffled even the most experienced adults.

Average...
By Cynthia K. Robertson
I'd be hard pressed to find a book about Eleanor and Franklin Roosevelt that I didn't adore, but unfortunately, Too Close to the Sun: Growing Up in the Shadow of My Grandparents, Franklin and Eleanor by Curtis Roosevelt is just average. Curtis Roosevelt (formerly Curtis Roosevelt Dall) is the second grandchild and oldest grandson of Franklin and Eleanor Roosevelt.

The author was three years old when FDR became president. His mother Anna, (the president's only daughter) was going through a divorce at the time, and so moved into the White House with her two children. Anna Eleanor Dall (Sistie) and Curtis (Buzzie) became immediate media darlings. Although his mother remarried and they moved to the West Coast, the White House and the Big House at Hyde Park were always "home" to Curtis. The author's family recognized early on that Curtis enjoyed the attentions that were directed at FDR a little too much. "The idea that I might be suffering from growing up in the orbits of my grandfather and grandmother, whose powerful auras were doubled-edged, was untenable." Being that Curtis was the second oldest grandchild, he did get to witness many events and meet many important people during his grandfather's presidency.

I enjoyed the parts about FDR, Eleanor and the White House. For instance, FDR insisted on having a live Christmas tree in the White House, lit by actual candles. The White House staff was aghast. One can only imagine real candles on a 20 foot tree in the East Room! However, I was almost embarrassed reading some facts about the author's childhood. For instance, this poor, little rich boy never slept alone, unbuttoned a button, went to the bathroom by himself, or flushed a toilet until he was 5 years old and ready for kindergarten. The Sun in this story is definitely Franklin. Curtis adored his Papa. But I got the feeling that while Curtis admired Eleanor, his love was reserved for Sara Delano Roosevelt (Franklin's mother, called Granny). He writes that his Granny was not a villain. "The characterization, coupled with decades of my grandmother's polite but obviously shaded remarks about her mother-in-law, set in motion her ogress's reputation, a mantle that continues to hang around Sara Delano Roosevelt's shoulders." From the hundreds of books that I have read about the Roosevelt family, I believe this reputation is well-founded. Curtis also ends the book with FDR's death, thus reinforcing my feeling that for the author, Eleanor did not receive equal billing. While Too Close to the Sun did provide some amazing photographs, it is lacking an index that I would have found helpful.

I will add Too Close to the Sun to my Roosevelt collection. Although I feel it's just average, at least it's better than any of the books written by his uncles.

Terrific perspective
By Jon Hunt
Public glimpses inside the White House (especially from family members) are rare, so when Curtis Roosevelt produced this fine volume, "Too Close to the Sun", it allowed readers not to get just a few snippets of casual observations but a dozen years of day-to-day remembrances. Unusual as it is for a grandchild of a president to inhabit the White House, Roosevelt did just that as he lived on and off with his famous grandparents from the time of FDR's first inauguration until the death of our thirty-second president twelve years later. In "Too Close to the Sun", the author reveals not only his memories of that time but also the often internecine relationships that went with all of the Roosevelts. It's a book worth every page.

Curtis Roosevelt, the oldest grandson of FDR, was just three years old when his famous grandfather became president. It was a privileged upbringing, to say the least. This sheltering led to a fearful childhood as the elder Roosevelts made sure their children "knew their place" and behaved in a manner becoming of their family. Without much social contact with other children, Roosevelt developed a fantasy world for himself, all the while maintaining an average student's comportment while not partaking in activities in which most children grow and thrive. How could he? FDR's and Eleanor's children, themselves, hardly led a routine life. All were married more than once and some four times...including (a generation later) Curtis, himself. His parents' divorce, his mother's remarriage (she, Anna, was the president's only daughter) and his moves in and out of a succession of schools left the author with a weak footing, as he freely admits. Home was the White House or Hyde Park, period.

What's fascinating about this book is that it strikes a nice balance between the personalities of the Roosevelts and the author's own challenged upbringing. It is his views on the president, First Lady and Franklin's mother that are the best as he tells us of his abiding love for "Granny" (FDR's mother, Sara) his gradual understanding of his "grandmére" (Eleanor) and his adoration of "Papa" (the president).
The book serves as a tour of the Roosevelt White House, complete with nannies, secret service agents, secretaries, and of course, those rambunctious Roosevelt uncles, who all did pretty much as they wanted.

One can understand the childhood that Curtis Roosevelt led and empathize with him, but his charm is never making the reader sympathize for him. That's a pretty good trick, and Roosevelt succeeds. "Too Close to the Sun" is full of rich detail and given the perspective that the author has, a much welcome addition to the lore of the FDR years. I highly recommend it.

Confronting the Weakest Link: Aiding Political Parties in New Democracies, by Thomas Carothers

Beset with persistent problems of self-interest, corruption, ideological incoherence, and narrow electoral majorities, political parties are the weakest link in many democratic transitions around the world. A large and ever-growing number of U.S., European, and multilateral assistance programs seek to help parties become effective pro-democratic actors. But given the depth of the problems, is success possible? C onfronting the Weakest Link is a pathbreaking study of international aid for political parties. Beginning with a penetrating analysis of party shortcomings in developing and postcommunist countries, Thomas Carothers draws on extensive field research to diagnose chronic deficiencies in party aid, assess its overall impact, and offer practical ideas for doing better. This critical analysis spans Latin America, Central and Eastern Europe, the former Soviet Union, Africa, the Middle East, and Asia. It sheds invaluable light on a major element of the contemporary challenge of democracy building, a subject now occupying center stage in the international policy arena.

'Improving the productivity and sustainability of agriculture in Africa is one of the pressing challenges of the 21st century. Bluffstone and Köhlin have assembled an authoritative volume of readings on this topic from some of the leading global experts. The book is essential reading for anyone interested in the complex problem of agricultural development in Africa.' -Edward B. Barbier, John S. Bugas Professor of Economics, University of Wyoming

'Stagnant yields, spikes in food prices, and a changing climate have pushed agriculture to the forefront of development concerns. This book provides a masterly microeconomic analysis of what's needed to make farm management more sustainable in Africa, the continent most dependent on agriculture.' -Jeffrey R. Vincent, Clarence F. Korstian Professor of Forest Economics and Management, Duke University

'Undoubtedly we must improve agricultural productivity to reduce widespread and persistent poverty. The sheer lack of agricultural development strategies, however, precludes the implementation of effective policies. This book represents a milestone towards the goal of poverty reduction in East Africa.' -Keijiro Otsuka, Professor of Development Economics, National Graduate Institute for Policy Studies, Tokyo

The relationships between these deities sheds new light on the subtle interpretations of your natal charts. Myths and stories provide a form of information that is easily and naturally assimilated. This book is intended to be an informative and interesting guide to the myths that underpin the principles of the planets in astrology and to explain why each has its own symbolism in the study of astrology. In each chapter the myth is told in story form. This is followed by the symbolism of the archetype and a description of the traditional qualities embodied by the planet or asteroid when interpreted in a natal chart reading.

Understanding The Planetary Myths by Lisa Tenzin-Dolma
By Mick Frankel
I really enjoyed reading this book and I'm sure that it will be a reference book that I go back to again and again.

Lisa Tenzin-Dolma give us a clear, step-by-step description of the Greek and Roman mythology for the planets and asteroids. She then describes an approach to understanding how these archetypes can be interpreted in combination in an astrological horoscope.

After the introduction and a brief chapter which includes a family tree of the early Olympians, there's a 10-page chapter for each planet and asteroid.

As well as the Sun, the Moon and the planets, the book includes chapters on the asteroids Chiron, Ceres, Juno, Pallas Athene and Vesta.

I like the distinctions that Lisa makes between Greek and Roman mythology. For example, whilst Saturn was "dark and vengeful" for the Greeks, he had a "work hard and play hard" reputation for the Romans.

There are insightful details throughout the book. I thought of Mars as just the god of war, but Lisa describes him as a warrior and a dancer. This now makes me view the planet Mars slightly differently in a natal chart.

For each chapter on a planet or asteroid there are sections on their birth, their personality traits, their special qualities, their attitude to relationships and sibling rivalry.

Crucially, there's a section on archetypal resonance which I think could be especially useful to astrologers. At the end of each chapter, Lisa writes about the planet's possible meaning in a natal chart and the planet's astrological rulerships.

Two short chapters at the end of the book describe how you could use the planetary myths to help understand a horoscope. For example, Lisa describes how a Mars/Jupiter square echoes the strained relationship between Ares and Zeus.

I love this practical application of mythology to astrology.

Amazon.com Review
Consider for a moment that the Dalai Lama is a tantric adept, and those visions of sexual bliss that the word "tantra" conjures up quickly dissolve. Tantra is more than the sex play of popular articles and books. Georg Feuerstein, authority of the yogic traditions, conjures up a much richer world of Hindu cosmology, philosophy, and theology. Tantra is a form of devotionalism, in which ritual sounds, gestures, and actions figure prominently. Reverence of the guru as god also plays a part, but Feuerstein tempers our suspicion by repeating the admonitions of tantric texts down through the ages to choose carefully. As much prudence must also go into reflection on the disciple's own person, who engages in strict yogic discipline designed to conquer the six enemies: desire, anger, greed, delusion, pride, and envy. Feuerstein draws on the ancient texts to describe the tantric path in great detail, including realization of the subtle body, directing energy through the chakras, and, yes, sex. Taken together, tantra becomes a vivid, multifaceted path to self-realization. --Brian Bruya

From Publishers Weekly
Feuerstein has attempted a daunting task, defining Tantric Yoga drawn from Hindu and not Tibetan Buddhist sources. To do this, he has assembled a wide-ranging compendium of Hindu, Tantric and Shaivite texts almost impossible to find in one place elsewhere. To plunge into this book is to find yourself rushing down the sacred River Ganges through the heart of India. Like a sophisticated travelogue, it brings into sharp focus the rich tapestry of the Indian ecstatic life and the exotic practices of Tantric Yoga that take place, metaphorically, on the banks of this Queen of rivers. The inner eye is challenged with mystical beasts bathing in the waters; holy men daubed in ashes undertaking bizarre and often previously never-before-seen Tantric rituals; the inner ear is filled with the rhythmic, pulsating chant of Om, and all its associated Sanskrit sounds; the senses are awash with meditative visions. It is a passage through Indian spiritual life that may be too sophisticated for the casual tourist, although for those who have passed this way before, it is a comprehensive and provocative commentary on the basic and advanced precepts of Tantric yoga. Written with literate modesty and erudition, this book is an invaluable resource.

"A wide-ranging compendium of Hindu, Tantric, Shaivite texts almost impossible to find in one place elsewhere. . . . a comprehensive and provocative commentary on the basic and advanced precepts of Tantric yoga. Written with literate modesty and erudition, this book is an invaluable resource."— Publishers Weekly

"Georg Feuerstein, who is arguably today's foremost Yoga researcher, has given us yet another very valuable book. Tantra: The Art of Ecstasy is the first nonacademic but sound and well-rounded introduction to the Hindu Tantric heritage since Sir John Woodroffe's pioneering publications of the 1920s. It corrects many widespread misconceptions and shows Tantrism to be a complex and intriguing tradition that deserves deeper study. Recommended reading for all students of Hinduism, Yoga, and spirituality in general."—Professor Subhash Kak, Ph.D., author of India at Century's End and coauthor of In Search of the Cradle of Civilization

Hindu Tantrik
By A Customer
Georg Feuerstein is a respected author of a number of works on esoteric traditions of India and here attempts a guide to a notoriously difficult subject.
Tantra is so difficult because of the number of different traditions, the multitude of various texts, many of which remain untranslated, and the subject matter itself, which has many pitfalls for the unwary student.
This book, however, is written by someone with an understanding of the subject matter, and is organised in a way which gradually draws the reader into the essentials of tantra, including the often neglected ritual aspect, including mantra, yantra, mudra and nyasa.
Feuerstein draws on a number of texts, some translated and others not, to explain the essentials of the tantrik tradition. He relies particularly heavily on the Kularnava Tantra (available in an English translation) which is, we feel, one of the more accessible of the texts.
The author stresses the importance of initiation and of the guru, and also spends some time examining those forms of tantra which have sprung up in the Western World.
"Many are attracted to Neo-Tantrism because it promises sexual excitement or fulfillment while clothing purely genital impulses or neurotic emotional needs in an aura of spirituality...Today translations of several major Tantras are readily available in book form, and many formerly secret practices are now, in the language of the texts, 'like common harlots'. This gives would-be Tantrics the opportunity to concoct their own idiosyncratic ceremonies and philosophies, which they can then promote as Tantra." (Tantra, page 271).
While Feuerstein warns that some tantrik practices are dangerous in the wrong hands, we feel that in many ways the tradition protects itself. There is, undoubtedly, a great number of groups and individuals peddling "tantra" as a way to greater sexual enjoyment - for example, some of the links to these pages are from hard porn sites - but the written tantras themselves were (and are) intended for the "in groups" and supplemented with oral information from the yogis and yoginis in the groups.
In passing, it could be noted that tantra in India suffers from its association with sexuality. So much so, that the term tantrik taints the people it is applied to. But some of this is due to the Western colonisation of India. A quick look at a Sanskrit-English dictionary demonstrates the sensuality of the language, while the temples of Khajuraho show that shame, guilt and modesty played little part in the civilisation of Bharata.
Feuerstein's book mostly succeeds in navigating a difficult subject. This is a well-written guide to a complex area and easily accessible to the layman. It is probably too late to dissociate this powerful and rich spiritual tradition from neo-Tantra. But now that even the Pope has decided that Indian spiritual traditions are worth examining, this book will go some way to redress the balance.

As good as anything by Karen Armstrong and maybe better
By A Customer
It's often hard to understand metaphysical books about tantra because there are few scholars who can write in a clear way that's accessible even for practitioners, let alone people who have never had a guru or traveled to India to experience tantric teachings firsthand.
In America, yoga has so often devolved into a physical practice with spiritual pretensions, instead of a deeply spiritual practice.
I returned from India from a six-month trip in 1998, during which time I stumbled into meeting a guru and then spent five weeks studying with him in Benares. When I came home, it was very hard to begin to articulate what had taken place. This book was a godsend, a link to connect my experience with a tradition that extends millennia back in time. And secondly it helped to link my friends and family to the experiences I just had by reading a clear description of the path and experiences involved in Tantra.
I hesitate even to use the word Tantra, given that it's so very, very misused in the West.
This book sets the record straight (Tantra does NOT equal sex) and presents the practice and history of Tantra in all its profundity. We are indebted to the author for his great gift to all of us.
For the other reviews that criticize the author's lack of experience in Tantra, you should be aware that the author has a Tantric Buddhist teacher which led him to bring his considerable talents to present the first guide and most helpful explanation of these profoundly important teachings.
I've given numerous copies to family and friends, all of whom have enjoyed it immensely.
Until Karen Armstrong decides to tackle this subject (highly unlikely, given her orientation), this is the best book available. Highest recommendation!

Important book, yet not complete enough
By Roar Bjonnes
This scholarly, well written and easily accessible book does a great job at dispelling some of the modern myths about tantra as being solely the yoga of sex. Instead, as the reader will find out, tantra is one of the most sophisticated paths to spiritual enlightenment ever conceived and has deeply influenced both Buddhism and Hinduism. However, the book has a few major shortcomings: 1. It is primarily based on scriptural research, not first-hand, practical knowledge of tantra. Since tantra is primarily a spiritual practice and secondarly a philosophy, personal insight--either by the author or others--would have greatly enhanced the book. 2. It is based on research of ancient tantric scriptures while failing to include the revised tantric scriptures of modern sages such as Shrii Shrii Anandamurti (a.k.a. P. R. sarkar), which are much more applicaple to our times. 3. It fails to show that tantra is a distinct spiritual path, or transcendental science, apart from both Hinduism or Buddhism, and with a much longer history than either of these religions. Keeping these shortcomings in mind, I recommend reading this book.

The Religion of Ayahuasca: The Teachings of the Church of Santo Daime, by Alex Polari de Alverga

An insider’s experience and personal transformation with ayahuasca and the religious philosophy surrounding it

• An intimate account of the genesis of the Santo Daime tradition

• Edited and introduced by Stephen Larsen, author of The Shaman’s Doorway

In search of something to restore his spiritual connection to life after his release from captivity as a political prisoner in Brazil, Alex Polari de Alverga had a transformative encounter with Padrinho Sebastiao Mota de Mela, one of the two revered founders of Santo Daime. A potent synthesis of Christianity and indigenous Amazonian practices of entheogen use, mediumship, and healing, the Santo Daime church provided Alverga with an alternative to his disillusionment with modern society. His quest for spiritual initiation eventually led him deep into the heart of the rain forest to Mapiá, one of the spiritual centers of Santo Daime, where he became a teacher and leader of the Daime community.

The Religion of Ayahuasca is a story of a classic spiritual encounter comparable to the Tibetan Saint Milarepa’s search for his teacher Marpa. It is also an intimate account of the genesis of an important religious tradition from its modest beginnings in Brazil to its growth throughout the world, offering an inside look at the spiritually centered village of Mapiá--a model for communities in the 21st century--and at the religious leader who helped create it. Providing insight into the spiritual path the Daime offers, Alverga’s tale reveals the new depths of Being made available through the sacred use of ayahuasca.

Review
“There are detailed, carefully written descriptions of the spiritual process and the precision with which Alverga has woven these threads through various perspectives and conceptual frameworks is fascinating.” (The Psychedelic Press, UK, January 2011)

“Who better to tell the story of ayahuasca (Diplopterys cabrerana) than de Alverga? His intellectual and practical work bridges the worlds of scholars and Amazonian people. After years of being held as a political prisoner during the reign of Brazil’s military junta, he encountered the Santo Daime religion–a unique form of christianity blended with traditional Amazonian use of mediumship and ayahuasca for healing and spiritual growth. The book relates the personal experiences key figures and of the author’s as he evolves into a Santo Daime leader.” (American Herb Association, September 2012)

ENTHEOGENS / RELIGION

ALEX POLARI DE ALVERGA spent years as a political prisoner during the rule of the military junta in Brazil, enduring torture, brutality, and deprivation. On his release from captivity, he encountered the Santo Daime religion and is currently a padrinho (spiritual father) in the spiritual community of Mapiá.

I highly recommend this book with one reservation
By Devon
I highly recommend this book with one reservation. People who are not at all familiar with the doctrine of Santa Daime, its history, its peculiar theology and its rituals will most likely find this book extremely confusing. If they are lucky enough to know some of the basics of the Santa Daime practice, its history and have been fortunate enough to participate in a few works, then this book will be invaluable. Santo Daime is not a prosletyzing religion, and it's very obvious that this book was written by a father of the church for its devoted members. Those who have an antrhopological interest, it is advised that you do some research before-hand.

Not a new book
By MysticJaguar
You have to read the amazon description very carefully to find "New Edition of Forest of Visions edition". This is just a new edition of this book Forest of Visions: Ayahuasca, Amazonian Spirituality, and the Santo Daime Tradition which contained, but not alot of information about Santo Daime.

A Brighter Day's Acomin'
By Caryllhanbury
This book arrived when my expectations were very depressing for our world. Upon reading
Alex's tale of a group of people who are excited about our future helps me see some tomorrow. To grasp the people all about us as siblings is the first and most urgent step.

Luke Savarini took a second bite of the lobster ravioli, just to be sure he hadn't judged too hastily. He'd been right the first time, he decided, letting the flavors dissolve on his tongue. There was too much oregano, and the sauce splashed over everything was weighted down with excess cream.

Anna, his sister, watched his reaction and then gave a crooked smile. "Not up to scratch, huh? My veal is okay, but not spectacular. Want to taste?"

"I'll take your word for it." Luke put down his fork, pushing away his heaped plate. With all the food there was in his life, he avoided eating anything he didn't completely enjoy. His waistline and his taste buds both thanked him.

"Why did you insist on bringing me here, Annie? You're not usually a fan of second-rate Italian."

"The restaurant is owned by Bruno Savarini. He's a cousin of ours, sort of. His grandfather and our great-grandfather were brothers."

Luke rolled his eyes. The most remote and fragile twigs of the family tree all made perfect sense to his sister, whereas he had his work cut out simply keeping track of the names and birthdays of his six nieces and nephews.

He mentally reviewed the vast clan of Savarini cousins. "Okay, I'm working hard, but I can't place a Cousin Bruno."

"He's Great-Uncle Joe's grandson. You must have run into each other at a wedding."

Luke grinned. "Yeah, but that's almost the same as saying I've never met him. Can you ever recall a Savarini wedding with less than two hundred relatives milling around and at least half of the men singing 'O Sole Mio' at the top of their lungs?"

Anna returned his grin, tacitly acknowledging the cheerful mob scenes that passed for family gatherings in the Savarini clan. "Bruno had his sixty-fifth birthday last month. He's short and stocky, with brown eyes and an olive complexion—"

Luke laughed. "Well now, that narrows it right down. Short, stocky, brown eyes. I guess only ninety percent of Savarini men fit that description."

Anna tried to look severe. "Just because you're a six-foot, gray-eyed genetic freak, there's no need to get snooty. Anyway, I brought you here because Bruno plans to retire as soon as he can find a buyer for his restaurant. He has crippling arthritis and he only comes into the restaurant occasionally nowadays. You'd be astonished at how much better the food tastes on the days when he's here."

"I wouldn't be astonished," Luke protested. "I'm a chef, remember? I know just how much difference it makes when you have somebody talented in charge of the kitchen."

"The restaurant is in a fabulous location," Anna continued as if he hadn't spoken. "The decor is attractive and the kitchen is state-of-the-art. And Bruno has plenty of loyal customers. Look around you. The place is full. That's pretty good on a Wednesday, especially since we're eating late."

Far from looking around the restaurant, Luke's gaze fixed on his sister with suddenly narrowed focus. "Wait. I must be slow on the uptake tonight because I've only just realized why we're here. You want me to buy this place, don't you?"

Anna had the grace to blush. "Well, you're a chef. You own restaurants. Bruno wants to retire and he's our cousin. It seems a natural fit."

Luke felt a surge of affectionate exasperation. It was a familiar sensation in Anna's vicinity. She was a brilliant physicist, working for a government agency that she claimed was part of the Department of Education, although he'd believe crayfish grew on trees before he believed that. He loved her more than any of his four other siblings, which was saying a lot. But whereas she found quantum mechanics and string theory simple concepts, the economics of running a family business had always dangled far beyond her ability to grasp.

He took a sip of Chianti and then toasted his sister with the glass. "I appreciate your good intentions, Annie, but I can't just randomly acquire restaurants all over the country. I live in Chicago, remember?"

"News flash. Have you noticed there must be thirty flights a day between Chicago and Washington, D.C.? A thousand miles isn't so far."

Luke laughed, genuinely amused. "From your perspective, maybe. That's what comes of working all day with astronomers who consider Alpha Centauri to be practically banging on the back door because it's only a billion miles away—"

"You're missing several zeroes," Anna said. "And it is banging on the back door as stars go."

"Yeah, well, that's my point, Annie. A billion or a gazillion, it's all in a day's work for you. However, when you're running a restaurant, a thousand miles is a long way. You need to be on the spot so you can keep an iron grip on quality control, not to mention you have to be on hand to step in whenever there's a crisis."

His sister wasn't ready to give up. "But you have three restaurants in the Chicago area already, and you can only be in one of them at a time. And they're doing so well…"

Luke mentally crossed his fingers; he was superstitious where his restaurants were concerned. "You're right, Luciano's is succeeding beyond my wildest hopes. And part of the reason the restaurants are doing well is because they're all in the Chicago area. Where I live." And where he was already working a minimum of sixty hours a week.

She sighed. "I hoped that the lure of opening a restaurant in the D.C. area might be enough to tempt you to visit more often. I miss you, Luke, much as I hate to admit it, seeing as how when we were growing up you were a totally annoying snot."

He raised his eyebrow. "Me? A snot? You must have me confused with one of your other brothers. Tom, maybe. He has major league snot potential."

She shook her head. "Uh-uh. No confusion. I'm talking about you."

"How quickly good deeds are forgotten." Luke gave an exaggerated sigh. "What about the time I saved you from being discovered with the captain of the baseball team in Mom and Dad's whirlpool tub? When you were both naked, no less. I figure that ought to have earned me at least a decade or two of gratitude."

"My God, Robert O'Toole and the hot tub."Anna's expression was suddenly arrested. "I'd forgotten about that."

"If Dad had found the two of you, trust me, it would be one of your more vivid teenage memories."

She chuckled in wry acknowledgment. "Love is weird, isn't it? For two whole months I was convinced my life would be over if Rob didn't ask me to the senior prom. And I haven't given him a single thought since the day I left for college."

"He would be devastated to hear that," Luke said dryly. "Rob definitely fancied himself."

She gave a nostalgic grin and her gaze became wistful. "Damn, I miss you, Luke. Are you sure you don't want to reconsider buying Bruno out?"

Luke quelled a moment of temptation. "I wish, Annie, but I'm already stretched way too thin, time-wise. I'm sorry."

She gave a resigned shrug that didn't quite conceal her disappointment. "Oh, well. It was worth a try."

He leaned across the table and briefly rested his hand on his sister's. The movement shifted his perspective and his gaze happened to land on a couple seated at the table closest to the entrance. The man's back was turned toward their table, but as Luke watched, the man laughed and reached out to put his arm around the woman's shoulder so that Luke glimpsed him in profile. The man listened to his companion for a moment, and then laughed again at whatever she had said. A sudden lull in the noise allowed Luke to hear the sound. It was teasing and low, a throaty chuckle. It was also eerily familiar.

Shock momentarily froze Luke in his seat. Then he jumped to his feet, grabbing his chair just in time to prevent it toppling over. "Be right back," he told his sister, moving swiftly toward the couple.

"Luke, what's wrong? Where are you going?"

He didn't answer, partly because he was having a hard time catching his breath, partly because he was focused with hypnotic intensity on the couple by the door. The man must have sensed that he was being observed. He glanced up and his head jerked in visible shock. He immediately rose to his feet, putting his hand in the small of his companion's back and hustling her toward the exit. She followed without a word of protest, oddly compliant.

A waiter carrying a heavy tray crossed Luke's path, obscuring his view. He wished he could push the waiter violently aside, the way they did in the movies, and to hell with the food arrayed on the tray. But the habit of deferring to a server carrying dishes was ingrained and Luke skirted the waiter, losing another crucial few seconds in his journey toward the exit. He had to excuse himself twice to an oblivious woman whose chair stuck far out from the table, forming an impromptu barricade. When he'd negotiated that obstacle, he squeezed past the two final tables separating him from the hostess station and reached empty floor space. The man and his companion were nowhere in sight.

Luke ran outside, cursing himself for having wasted too much time being polite. Why hadn't he just elbowed and shoved his way across the dining room, and to hell with flying dishes? Unfortunately, the parking lot was crowded and he couldn't immediately spot the couple. Dammit, surely there hadn't been time for them to drive off?

The lot served several specialty stores in addition to Bruno's restaurant, and there were at least a dozen people strolling around, as well as a van pulled up to the curb, collecting trash. Although the lot was rimmed by lights, the humidity was high and there was a slight mist hanging in the night air, making it frustratingly hard to see. Luke finally picked out his quarry simply because the man was running, his companion jogging awkwardly in his wake, hampered by her high heels.

"Stop!" Luke yelled, ignoring the interested stares of passersby. "Stop, for God's sake! Ron Raven, is that you? Ron, stop!"

The man didn't answer. If anything his pace got faster. The woman, indifferent to the damp pavement, tugged off her shoes and ran barefoot across the lot.

Luke tore down the aisle of parked cars, catching up as the man clicked the car locks with his remote and slid behind the wheel of a silver-gray Mercedes. Ron, or...

Grand Finale
By Rosa
Saving the best for last in the exciting Trilogy. All the questions that were left unanswered in the previous novels will be answered. It is fast-paced and exciting. The novel starts with Luke Savarani spotted the supposed to be dead Ron Raven at a restaurant when he tries to catch him runs away. To added further complication he used to date Kate Fairfax daughter of Avery Fairfax Ron Raven second wife. Now he has to break the news to the Fairfaxs and try to fight old feelings. Well done Jasmine Cresswell.

Unsatisfying Ending
By Theresa Kriner
I worked my way through all three of the Raven/Fairfax trilogy and while the concept was great and it had some wonderful parts I found the ending to be very unsatisfying. While trying not to give too much away for anyone who might like to read it, I was disappointed that Ellie didn't get to be part of the verbal showdown and was very irritated with how the story of Ron Raven ended. All in all they are not bad as love stories go, even better as mysteries go but as a combination it's not the greatest.

Nice read, kept me guessing
By Melanie Z.
I had not read any other books by Jasmine Cresswell, but I picked up this book on a whim and I'm glad I did. True, at times the prose was a bit clumsy, and the romance bits were a bit cliched, but the mystery definitely held my interest. My biggest problem with romances in general is that I find them too predictable, but this one was particularly good in that respect. Yes, of course we all know that the hero and heroine will end up in bed together, that is a foregone conclusion with this type of book- but Kate's quest for her father takes some very unexpected turns. I did not figure out the mystery too early on- though I caught on to the major plot twist before the main characters did- and the story was entertaining and stimulating enough to keep me reading.

Overall, I recommend this to romance lovers and to people like me who aren't too big into that genre but like a good mystery.

And like I said, I had not read either of the other two books but I had no trouble following the story.
