Nice addition to an existing Zentangle library
By Kathy
This book is exactly what the title says - "Inspiration and Prompts for Meditative Drawing". You will only find instructions for 12 tangles in the book. I have other Zentangle books that are just filled with patterns and this book is not like that. What I like about the book is that it is filled with writing about Zentangle and that is something I did not have. I know there is lots of information online and I do lots of blog reading, etc. but it's still nice to settle in with a book.

The writings are about how the author got started tangling along with in depth information on all kinds of different pens, pencils and paints I've heard about but didn't really know too many details on. After each pen, pencil or paint she talks about, there are a couple examples of tangles done with that one. I bought the Kindle edition and on my tablet it's really nice to zoom in and see all the detail of each type. There is a small section on shading and a large section on color. She also writes a lot about combining tangles with photography and again shows examples, a really informative chapter on tangles in journaling and a whole section on combining your tangles with different backgrounds in Photoshop. There are lots of examples of her work and then a little paragraph on what inspired that particular drawing. There are other contributers to the book besides the author and there is a little writeup on each person. The book ends with several links to blogs and places to buy supplies.

Again, I would say if you are looking for instructions on how to do lots of different tangles, this book is probably not for you. But, if you want a really pretty book to inspire you, along with some very nice writing that definitely motivated me to try new things and may do the same for you, I'd say give this book a try.

Great descriptions of zentangle method and tools
By Rebecca Fritzson
This is one of my favorite zentangle books. So many focus on how to create a few patterns, most of which can be found on the web. This books does a nice job of explaining the method, surveying the various pens, and a complete section on adding color. The examples are simple but beautiful. It would be a great first book on zentangle.

This Book Is Zen...!
By Megan Schlobohm
I am new to zentangling, and I pretty much thought of it as doodling on steroids until I dove into this book. It is part explanation, part journal, and all creative. I highly recommend it to anyone, whether you are just starting, or are a CZT master, you will learn something new from Karen's book. Enjoy.

Leslie Kelly delivers a fantastic contemporary romance!
By mnix
Emma Frasier returns home to Joyful, Georgia when her life falls apart. Her best friend embezzled her life savings along with a sizeable amount of the assets belonging to the company they had both worked for. Now that she's jobless she has returned home to house her grandmother left her to try and get her life back on track..With a strip club being built in the town by a former porn star, the local grapevine has been working overtime trying to figure out who the porn star is....and when Emma arrives home they quickly decide that it must be her. Emma doesn't understand why people keep looking at her strange or giving her smirking looks and the whole thing leaves her feeling uncomfortable. Then there is Johnny Walker, the former local bad boy who is now District Attorney. Emma had dated Johnny's brother Nick in high school only to find herself dumped on prom night when Nick disappeared to marry the sheriff's daughter who was pregnant with his child. When Johnny showed up in Nick's place to take Emma to the prom neither of them expected the night to end with them being caught naked together. Johnny has always felt like Emma used him in place of his brother but now that they are together again things quickly heat back up. Between dealing with her feelings for Johnny and a town who thinks she was a porn star Emma's got a lot to handle.

Leslie Kelly has delivered a feel good romance that has laugh out loud humor, sexy love scenes and touch of suspense. The tension between Emma and Johnny is obvious from the beginning and the secondary story of Claire and Tim is a delightful bonus. Add to this the tease of an upcoming story for Nick and She Drives Me Crazy is a not to be missed treat. She Drives Me Crazy was my first experience with Leslie Kelly but I was so throughly satisfied by it that I immediately ordered all her other titles and have added Leslie Kelly to my list of auto buy authors!

Crazy, good fun!
By Anna Hope
A seductive, lazy Southern setting combined with the reallistic modern love & life problems of todays women make this story. Don't get me wrong it's not a sappy story you see Valerie Burtonelli in. It's edgy and witty with plenty of steam generated by the main characters Emma Jean and Johnny.

Because of a misplaced assumption in the local gossip grapevine, everyone in Joyful, GA assumes Emma Jean is a porn star whose just returned to there town after a long absense. It doesn't hurt that she left after an embarrassing nudity incident with the local bad boy heart throb. Blissfully unaware of the rumors, Emma Jean only ends up feeding the flames of embarrassment through her own behavior, especially when she's around Johnny Walker. And every time Johnny sees her he just wants to grab her and bite her in unmentionable places.

Combined with several who done it mysteries, a cast of sparky secondary characters, and an interesting new idea on how to eat pie this book is a definite winner. Look for the next book in this series in September!

Funny, Sexy and Entertaining
By Ann Kincaid
I am a big fan of small town romances and this book is going right onto my favorites list. Emma Jean Frasier is a great heroine...flat broke and returning to a town she hates. Meanwhile, the town of Joyful is convinced Emma went off and became a big time porn star and is opening a strip club.

Johnny Walker is a wonderful hero. Sexy and strong, he really is driven crazy by Emma Jean, the girl he has never been able to forget. His revelation at the end was beautiful and left me smiling long after I finished the book.

The other characters in the town add a lot of laughs and quirkiness. I loved how the mayor got what was coming to him.

Emma's friend Claire, the grumpy old cleaning lady, the dirty old man who pines for the sex doll his dog popped...just all so funny and entertaining.

She Drives Me Crazy is a fun, funny, fast-paced read that is definitely worth checking out.

It was easy to slip from the Palace unnoticed, when you knew exactly what to do. A mistake could get you returned to precisely where you did not wish to be—confinement, boredom, the duties of a Royal Heir—but she'd learned from her mistakes in the past. Now, it was nothing at all to duck her governess and gain her freedom.

It was especially easy on this night, when so many Faeries poured in through the Palace gates that the guards would not concern themselves with the ones going out.

And this was why Cerridwen did not object to yet another royal party. She'd complained on the surface, just enough so that her compliance would not arouse suspicion. And her governess had dressed her hair and helped her into her gown, all the while ignoring the expected grumbling and protesting that she had become so used to over the past twenty years.

Twenty years. Really. Who still had a nursemaid at twenty years old? Not even the Humans kept their children as children for that long!

Twenty years, this night, and a party to celebrate it. A party to celebrate one more year that the Royal Heir was not dead. What importance was an heir, really, in a race that did not die, or, at least, did not die naturally? There would be another party like it, and another, and another, always with the same Faeries, always in the same, boring pattern. A feast, then dancing, and conversation with the few faeries she was allowed to know, all of her mother's friends and advisors. How many evenings of her life had already been wasted in awkward chatter with Cedric, her mother's faithful lapdog, who never said or did anything interesting, lest he offend Her Majesty? Or Malachi, who glowered and stared in the most uncomfortable way, who, it was rumored, was not even a quarter Fae, but was kept because of some bizarre devotion to her mother?

"It is not a waste," Governess would say sagely while she pulled and pried at Cerridwen's tangles. "If it is the will of the Gods, you will never die. You cannot waste that which is infinite."

It did not make Cerridwen glad to know that her boredom would be infinite.

After she had been cleaned and dressed and made to look far more fine than usual for these occasions—which aroused some suspicion on her part that quickly faded when she remembered her plan to escape the party altogether—she had dutifully followed the guards that would escort her to the ball. Then she had promptly allowed herself to become separated from them by the chattering throng of arriving guests, and her escape was made.

It had not been hard to disguise her leather breeches under her gown, and when she reached an alcove, covered over by a tapestry of her mother, the Great Queene Ayla, slaying her father, the Betrayer King, she ducked behind the heavy fabric and shucked her dress, pulling on the shirt that she'd folded and hidden in her bodice. She kept her wings bound—where she was going, they did not know her as the Royal Heir to the throne of the Faeries, nor as a Faery at all. Among them, she was Human, and the ruse suited her.

The blowsy Human shirt—a ruffled, silk thing she traded with Gypsies for—would have covered her wings without their binding, but she had worn them bound since before she could remember. She felt almost naked without them secured to her back. Into her sleeve, she tucked a scrap of a mask. It would guarantee her entrance tonight, to a gathering much more desirable than the one she'd been expected to attend.

She left the dress and her shoes in the alcove. Better to go barefoot than break her neck in those flimsy slippers. She took a deep breath and slipped from her hiding place, but no one noticed her. As she wound her way through the crowd, deftly avoiding her abandoned and confused guards who stumbled, helpless, against the flow of bodies moving into the Palace, she pulled her hair over her shoulder and worked it into a loose braid, making sure to cover the wisps of antennae that sprouted from her forehead. By the time she reached the Palace gate, she could have been any Human slave being sent by their Faery master on an errand in the Lightworld.

Cerridwen spotted two such slaves following their owners into the Palace. In a time before her mother's reign, they all said, this would never have been tolerated. Queene Ayla herself did not care for the practice, either. It brought the Fae races too close to Humans, blurred the dividing line between them. No doubt the Faeries who brought Humans into the Palace tonight would either be turned away or have their names marked down somewhere to note that they were out of favor with the Queene.

Cerridwen's fists clenched at her sides as she marched away from the Palace. Her mother's hypocrisy never failed to ignite fury within her. She was half Human, and yet she criticized full-blooded Faeries for consorting with them? And she kept a Darkling at her side, yet railed against the Darkworld, as well?

The flames cooled as Cerridwen realized how far she had already traveled from the Palace, and how close she was to the freedom of the Strip. Already, she could hear the sounds of it echoing through the concrete walls of her prison world. She came to the edge of the Faery Court, nodded to the guards who stood dressed in her mother's livery, and broke into a joyous run toward the mouth of the tunnel.

The Strip was the neutral ground between the worlds of Dark and Light. A huge tunnel, reaching far over the heads of the creatures on the ground, with dwellings and places of commerce stacked on top of each other, the Strip was home to those who took no side in the ongoing war between Lightworld and Darkworld. Mostly Humans, the fascinating ancestors of Cerridwen's mother, and, she sometimes reminded herself with pride, of herself. Gypsies, who considered themselves apart from Humans, who claimed kinship to immortal creatures long ago. Bio-mechs, still Human, but fitted with metal parts.

Then, there were those that were not so fascinating, not so much as they were repulsive or frightening. Vampires, with their thirst for the death of any mortal creature. The Gypsies that even other Gypsies would not consort with, who lured creatures away from the safety of the Strip to harvest their parts. They pulled stinking carts, hawking their wares, eyes and teeth and horns, and nameless, slimy things that no one, at least, no one that Cerridwen could think of, would want. She could not fathom why any Human would chose to live in the Underground with the very creatures their race had banished below. After the destruction of the Veil between the world of the Astral and the world of mortals, the Earth had to be shared. The Humans had taken more than their share by driving the races of the Underground into their sewers and cellars. Why some of the Humans would follow the creatures into their skyless prison, Cerridwen could not explain.

She pushed her way across the wide tunnel, toward the stand that sold sweet Human bread, and the smell reminded her that she had not brought anything to trade with. She reached to her hair, where Governess had pinned a jeweled ornament. It was worth too much to trade for simple bread, but the sticky, spiced scent teased her empty belly. Tonight, she would be generous.

A soft, tutting sound came close to her ear, and a voice whispered, "You know better than that, Cerri."

She jumped and laughed as she turned. "Fenrick, you frightened me!"

As he always frightened her, a little. And thrilled her. He smiled, and his teeth stood out, brightly silver against the blue-black of his skin. "You should be frightened of me. You, Human, me Elf—we are, after all, mortal enemies."

"Mortal enemies," she agreed, good-naturedly, but she wished he would not make such jokes. They were enemies, more than he knew. Between Elf and Human, no love was lost. But the animosity between the Faery Court and the kingdom of Elves went back much farther than their confinement in the Underground.

He took the hair ornament from her hand and made a soft whistling sound as he examined it. "This looks like Faery craft. It fairly burns my skin to touch it."

"I found it in the mouth of a tunnel to the Light-world." It was not a complete lie. She had found it in the Lightworld.

This impressed Fenrick; his pointed ears lifted as he smiled. "So much bravery for such a small thing! No doubt you'll be at the front line when the great battle comes."

The great battle. They often mocked it together, the lust for blood and war and victory that both the Light-world and Darkworld professed at length. It was speaking out against such ideals that had gotten the Elves expelled from the Lightworld in the first years since the Great War with the Humans. And it was what had gotten Fenrick's father expelled from the Dark-world Elves only twenty-five years previous. Fenrick had grown, as Queene Ayla had, in the hardship of the Strip.

Strange, Cerridwen thought, that it made her mother so angry and hardened at Humans, so different from Fenrick, who embraced the difficulties of his childhood and held no one unduly accountable.

Fenrick motioned to the stall owner and handed over his trade—a few water-stained packets of sugar from the Human world above, a booklet of paper scraps held together with coiled wire, and two or three small, coppery coins, also Human in origin—and waited for the thick-armed man to assess the value. He nodded, unsmiling, and broke off a large chunk of the sticky sweet bread for Fenrick.

Fenrick held up his hand. "For the Human. She was willing to part with something much more valuable for it."

At this, the shopkeeper's eyes widened in disbelief, and he made to pull the bread back, but Cerridwen snatched it and she and Fenrick ran laughing into the crowd at the center of the Strip.

When they stopped again, near one of the tunnels to the Darkworld, she meant to thank him for the bread. But Fenrick spoke first, and she used the opportunity to bite into the delicious Human confection.

"You look different tonight," Fenrick said, gesturing to her face. "You're wearing paint on your eyes. Trying to impress someone?"

She had forgotten to remove the cosmetics Governess had applied for the royal party. She swallowed carefully, the sticky bread sliding down her throat in a raw lump. Then, she put on a wicked grin, the one she had practiced in the mirror until it looked both teasing and good-humored. "Perhaps. Or several someones. The night is long."

He took a step forward, then another, until they were so close that his chest brushed hers. His gray tongue darted over his blue-black lips, his unsettlingly yellow gaze fixed on her mouth. He leaned down, and she did not know what to do, other than to flatten against the slope of the tunnel and move the bread to her side so that he did not crush it between them. His mouth covered hers—how often had she thought of this happening in the weeks since she'd met him?—and it was exactly like, yet strangely nothing at all like, what she had imagined it would be to be kissed. She heard a small noise from her throat before she could stop it; it was a shame, she wanted to appear experienced and unaffected.

When he moved back, it seemed to have been finished in a blink of an eye. For another blink, she waited, wondering what he would say, if this was when he would declare some feeling for her. Her heart stuck in her throat, or it might have been the bit of bread, but while she gaped at him wide-eyed, his serious, intense expression changed into one of laughter.

"Come on. The night isn't that long." He tugged on her hand and she followed him into the tunnel, bracing herself against the stench of decay that lingered in the Darkworld.

So, that was not what he meant by the kiss, though she did not know what he had meant. It did not matter. She could laugh and dance and be young, unencumbered by the strictures of Palace manners, the seriousness that pervaded every facet of her life in the Lightworld.

She let him take her hand and pull her deeper into the Darkworld, and she thought she could already hear the pulse of the music that awaited her.

"Your Majesty?"

Ayla looked up, away from the revelers who crowded the Great Hall. Cedric, seated at her side, turned his attention to the guard who had approached her, as did Malachi, who stood at the foot of the dais, in deep discussion with two other Faeries on her council.

Angry as she was with her daughter, she would not show it. Nor would she show any concern, though in the back of her mind it crept in to spoil her annoyance. "Yes? Have you found her?"

"No, Your Majesty. We did find a dress, which her servants have confirmed belonged to her, and shoes." He cleared his throat, obviously nervous to have to speak to his Queene thusly. "Is it possible that she has left the Palace? We do not wish to presume—"

A series worthy of Hollywood...2nd installment twice as good
By Sara K.
as the first book - and the first book was good. This trilogy has everything any fantasy and romance lover could want. The book picks up 20 years after the end of the first book in which a prophecy was revealed. A Faerie queen, not completely fae, will free the underworld faeries and allow them to live in the Upworld again. They, along with elves, dragons, trolls and any number of creatures, had been banned to the underworld by humans after a great conflict. To be free in the Upworld again is their greatest wish of all.

Ayla (Queen of the Fairies) and Malachai (a fallen Death Angel and unofficial Royal Consort) have a beautiful but very spoiled 20 year old daughter (Cerridwen). To keep her safe from all (as ordered by a Goddess), she was never told Malachai is her father and her wings bound as they look just like his. She abhors him and his apparent humanity. She hates her mother for having him there and she hates the court. The problem arises when the same Goddess had told Ayla that it is her very daughter that will save the Faeries and Ayla had been charged to keep Cerridwen safe at all costs.

In her rebellion, Cerridwen has a secret boyfriend who just happens to be the Faeries' greatest enemy - an elf. She is sure he loves her and runs away for good this time. Of course, trouble looms and the epic story unfolds.

The characters in this book are well developed and the plot is tight with unexpected twists. There is a lot of action packed in these pages. Treason reigns supreme. A mother despairs while trying to raise a difficult child. Love and loyalty are tested to the limits and the end of all the Fae loom ahead. There is death as well. With the narrative style of writing, Ms. Armintrout, in my opinion, treats the death of some of the characters the best I have seen in a very long time.

I can't wait to read the conclusion of the series. And I repeat, Hollywood would do well to pay attention to this trilogy.

Not a Paranormal Romance- Don't be fooled by the label
By Pacey1927
My Title may sound like its a negative thing that this book isn't really a paranormal romance, but its not. I just feel like this book would have been more honestly labeled as a fantasy book. I read the first book, "Queene Of Light" and enjoyed it however I had a difficult time connecting to the characters, and caring about them because they were so tremendously different, being fairies and angels, and their views of loves and emotions were way different than mine. I appreciated the story for the unique and detailed world Armintrout produced and the storyline was interesting if somewhat hard to get into. This second story "Child of Darkness" is a great improvement. I found the main character Cerridwen to be annoyingly childish for much of the book, but I also felt she was relatable and I think she may be the best character in this series to date. She is the daughter of Ayla, the queen of the Lighword, and a half human/half fairy mix and Ayla's royal consort, the fallen angel Malachi. In this story, a battle looms that will forever change the underworld. Elves have started a war against the Queene's palace and they have an evil force of Waterhorses at their beck and call. The waterhorses are leaving deadly trails of bodies in their wake already. Cerridwen fancies herself in love with an elf but he doesn't know her true nature and she is about to gamble the lives of her family and those of their followers. Their is a sorta romance between Cerridwen and her elf and an established romance between Anya and Malachi. Their love shows more in this book than it did in the first actually, and I had tears in my eyes by the end of the novel. Read the book though and you will probably agree with me about this not being a romance novel. Still the story worked on a more emotion level, and still the plot was very interesting and heart racing. I didn't agree with many of Ayla's political moves but its obvious she did care for her people. The battles were intense and thigns didn't always come out like you'd expect. The book ends on a cliff-hanger of sorts and the whole premise of the story seems to have changed. I was interested in reading this series before, but now I am quite involved and eagerly await the next book.

Very good but not romance
By Amazon Customer
I picked this book and it's prequel (Queen of Light) on chance when I found it on display at the local book store and thought it might be interesting from the summary. I was weary though when I then found that it was from the romance section. I still gave it a shot though and I was not disapointed. Where Queen of Light had the romance, it read like an ok prequel. Child of Darkness continues from what Queen of Light set up (though it can be read on its own) and expands it. I wouldn't, however, put this one in the romance genre. There is romance, of the failed sort, and it is setting up for some that may happen later, but it is more fantasy then anything.

If you enjoy court politics, betrayal, magic and battles, then this is a book for you cause it has it in spades. Though the most interesting part of all of it is how the character's perception of each other changes through out the story.

Seven-Tenths: Love, Piracy, and Science at Sea (LeapSci), by David Fisichella

An engineer whose life is in shambles meets a blind oceanographer who spends her life at sea. In this memoir of their courtship, David Fisichella writes of science, love, adventure, and danger on the ocean. He survives heavy weather, an equator crossing, and a pirate attack off the coast of Somalia. He learns how scientists study ocean physics and why their research is so important, how people live for months on a crowded boat, and what it means to be working for, and dating, the chief scientist. Told with humor, gritty details, and a refreshing sense of wonder about our oceans.

Review
"A lost man finds his calling, and an oceanographer with dimming eyesight illuminates the dark sea. A dissatisfied engineer, David Fisichella, stumbles upon a life at sea. As the vision of Amy Bowen, a chief scientist at a highly respected oceanographic research institution, deteriorates, her work increasingly reveals the workings of the ocean. An inspiring story of dedication, perseverance, courage, and love."—Deborah Cramer, author of Great Waters: An Atlantic Passage, and Smithsonian Ocean: Our Water Our World

About the Author
Fisichella manages shipboard scientific services at Woods Hole Oceanographic. Formerly an aerospace engineer, he turned to providing adaptive technology to the blind. When his first marriage collapsed, he went to sea on a whim with a scientist suffering from macular degeneration. David teaches sailing and skiing to the blind, and sails around New England with his wife and seven-year-old daughter.

Seven-Tenths is educational and entertaining.
By Robert G Yokoyama
Seven-Tenths is a memoir that has elements of science and geography. I enjoyed reading every page of this unique book. The title is a reference to the fraction of the earth that is covered in water. David Fisichella makes oceanography sound like a fascinating subject. I know nothing about the science of the oceans, so the scientific parts of the book are very interesting. Fisichella writes about every aspect of doing ocean research while living on a ship. I enjoyed reading how water is collected and the elements of the ocean that oceanographers study like salinity and how different currents of water interact with each other. There is a lot of equipment involved in this research. Fisichella describes all the technical aspects well.

My knowledge of geography has expanded because of this book. I had no idea where the Seychelles or the Gulf of Aden were located on a map before reading this book. I have a good idea of where they are now. I love reading about new places in books I never heard of.

This book also reinforces my belief that people with disabilities can achieve anything if they work hard enough. The author's wife is a woman named Amy. She is visually impaired, but her disability does not prevent her from pursuing her work as a scientist with a passion. Seven-Tenths is an educational and entertaining book.

`Seven-tenths of the globe is covered by water.'
By Jennifer Cameron-Smith
In 1995, at the Carroll Center for the Blind, David Fisichella, a mechanical engineer meets Amy Bower, an oceanographer who is progressively losing her vision. David has previously sailed with blind sailors, and over time forms both a personal and a professional relationship with Amy. The professional part of the relationship involves David travelling with Amy on oceanographic research vessels to provide sighted assistance, and this is the main focus of this book.

I enjoyed learning about the intricacies of life and work on oceanographic research vessels: the very tight scheduling which requires detailed planning of scientific experiments as well as every other aspect of a trip. It's hard work, even without Somali pirates to complicate it further! I learned, too, of some of the mysteries of deep ocean currents and some of the advantages (and disadvantages) of life at sea. It is easier to read about the traditions of equatorial crossing, and the sea-sickness, than it is to experience it.

I found David's recounting of Amy's experiences inspirational. Like many people with significant visual impairment, Amy has learned to adapt in a world where a lack of sightedness can be a severe disadvantage. It's heartening to read how, with appropriate support, challenges can be met head on.

While I focussed a lot on Amy's story, I suspect that it was David who learned most about himself during the period of this memoir. A very enjoyable read.

A tale of discovery, of oceans and self...
By R S Cobblestone
"Seven-tenths of the globe is covered by water" (p. 85).

In Seven-Tenths: Love, Piracy, and Science at Sea, author and engineer David Fisichella puts together a surprisingly engaging yarn about experiencing the ocean not from the shuffleboard deck of a cruise ship, but from the cables, crates, and schedules of oceanographic research vessels.

Fisichella begins volunteering with an organization called the Carroll Center for the Blind, being the "eyes" for blind sailors. He's good at it, and he likes himself for doing it. Fisichella meets Amy Bower, a scientist with macular degeneration, and in need of a good pair of eyes for her next oceanographic expedition. Fisichella is in. Their relationship develops, and eventually they are married.

But this book really is about the daily grind on a science vessel, with its mix of crew and scientists, and the need to get a science experiment done right, the first time, since there may never be a second chance. Add to this the adventures of seasickness, Somali pirates, centuries old traditions relating to equatorial crossings, and the mysteries of deep water ocean currents, and Fisichella keeps your attention throughout the book.

There's one point before a cruise that Fisichella's dog is skunked. They try the home remedy, tomato juice (actually, all they have is chunky style tomato sauce), before heading off to a professional dog groomer. If they would have spent 2 minutes searching, they'd have found that tomato juice doesn't work (it seems like it does because the human nose becomes fatigued from the skunk scent), and that there is a 100% effective formula for deactivating skunk essence made with products commonly found at home (hydrogen peroxide, baking soda, and liquid soap). Even scientists and engineers miss the boat sometimes!

Fisichella did make the common mistake in his book of referring to a "principle investigator" instead of "principal investigator." I'm certain Amy would have caught this if she had read it to herself!

Still, I found this book, my second from Leapfrog Press, captivating and interesting. I'm going to pass this one on to a budding marine scientist, and see what she thinks. Sounds like an exciting career choice!

The Approaching Great Transformation: Toward a Livable Post Carbon Economy, by Joel Magnuson

"A brave book by a smart person with a masterful command of economic theory."—Publisher's Weekly

How should we act and think economically in the world as the era of cheap oil comes to an end? The Approaching Great Transformation begins to answer this massive question, focusing on the people and communities already at work on the transition: energy descent pioneers in the UK and the US educating their communities about the road ahead, small enterprises defying traditional  “profit” in favor of permanence and sustainability, and cities preparing for a post carbon future.

Highlighting the work of thinkers like John Ruskin and E. F. Schumacher, Magnuson here builds on his previous book, Mindful Economics.

Review
"The Approaching Great Transformation is a breath of fresh air in a world of hackneyed nonsolutions to our social and economic problems. Professor Magnuson pulls no punches regarding the coming collapse of the corporate-commercial-consumer society, or the inability of technological fixes and 'green capitalism' to bail us out of the historical crunch that is virtually upon us. Rather, as we start to run out of energy (read: oil) and are forced to abandon obsolete notions of 'growth' and 'progress', we shall have to confront the question we have collectively been avoiding for roughly 500 years: If money is not the purpose of life, what is? Whether the alternative models discussed in this book prove to be viable or not, the author makes it clear that what we are living with now is no choice at all. His message is simple: change or die." —Morris Berman, author of Why America Failed

“A challenging and engaging exploration of what it will take to make the transition to an ecologically sustainable future.  Magnuson exposes the false promises of green-wash capitalism—and in the tradition of E.F. Schumacher puts the hopeful shoots of real alternatives squarely on the map for ongoing development.”—Gar Alperovitz, Lionel R. Bauman Professor of Political Economy at the University of Maryland and author of America Beyond Capitalism

"We are literally in the midst of reshaping the world and as a result, this is the time to make the new economy in a way that is redefining, as economist Joel Magnuson writes, “what is good, beautiful, fair, or wholesome, and making sure that our economic system allows us to live according to these beliefs.”—Truthout

"Soon, fossil fuels will run out—or become ridiculously complicated and expensive to extract—and the global economy will be in a real pickle, says Magnuson, an economist "specializing in non-orthodox approaches to political economy." These days, no one is safe from rhetoric about "going green"; Magnusson argues that this is mostly a "marketing ploy," a way for huge corporations to have and eat their cakes—labeling their products "green" while relentlessly pursuing "endless growth" and ignoring the reality of a finite planet with limited resources. While "green" and "sustainable" have become catchwords, material consumption in the last 25 years has increased. A "deeper transformation of our core economic institutions" is necessary, he argues; i.e. capitalism must go. While eloquently argued, the book's central message will be difficult to hear for many, though he effectively skewers the mantras of those who hope to ignore the problem: "at least it won't happen in our life time" and "technology will come through." This is a brave book by a smart person with a masterful command of economic theory; unfortunately, for these reasons its reach is probably limited: most people will balk at its central message: that we will have to get by with much, much less production and consumption."—Publishers Weekly

Introduction: ANOTHER SEA CHANGE

Every epic historical transformation began with economic turbulence and collapse. As a general rule, when the economic foundation of a society is significantly disrupted, it destabilizes everything else. Everything begins to change. The Roman Empire finally crumbled when its Mediterranean system of conquest, slavery, and trade was thrown into chaos by the Saracens who launched their invasions from northern Africa. And the feudal system of the Middle Ages was brought down when its agrarian economy was ruined by plague epidemics and wars over religion. Today another historic sea change is beginning to take form and the underlying cause, again, is a major economic disruption. Though this time it will not be caused by invading and conquering armies or plague epidemics, the disruption will be a global decline in the availability of oil—the paramount and finite energy source that has supported all the major industrial systems for the last century. As resource limitation and climate change are beginning to shake the foundation of our entire way of life, another historic sea change is in the making.

Our current global system of production and commerce is driven by an imperative for endless growth and expansion. But limited supplies of oil and virtually all other resources are binding this expansion like a rope tightening around every economy in the world. Yet in a kind of blind and desperate attempt to keep charging forward with more economic growth, governments nearly everywhere are plunging themselves into massive and unsustainable debt. Whether it smashes into the wall of resource limitations and debt fatigue, or makes a shift away from business as usual, our global economy is going to change.

As we begin to feel these changes we will be forced to reexamine what we consider to be the good life. Many of us in the so-called developed world have high expectations for our career choices, our levels of income, the things we want to buy, and all the other accoutrements of a plentiful lifestyle. But this is all beginning to change. The cause of this change is a fairly simple but sobering reality: the resource base of our planet can no longer sustain it. When I refer to a declining resource base here, I am not only talking about oil, though oil is the big one. Other fossil fuels, water, topsoil, basic metals, and virtually every other resource available to us are being consumed to exhaustion. We often say that our desire for high material standards of living is to provide for our families—our children. The cruel irony is that our children and grandchildren will be the first generations to experience the full brunt of the economic and ecological damage we are doing now. That is, unless we do something now to change that.
In his book, Collapse: How Societies Choose to Fail or Succeed (2004, 2011), evolutionary psychologist Jared Diamond chronicles an impressive list of examples of how humans have a penchant for self-destruction. Though his examples are taken from different places and at different times in history, they all basically follow a consistent pattern in which entire societies collapse as a result of their destruction of the environmental habitat that would have otherwise sustained them. But we don’t have to follow this pattern. We are an evolving species and we can learn from the lessons of history. We have conscious awareness and the ability to be proactive and possibly shape the direction of this historic sea change toward something better. This would be our lasting contribution—our great transformation.

The choices we make today as we adapt to mounting scarcity may be the most important historical events of the 21st century. We can choose to be forward thinking and work actively toward positive changes in a spirit of celebration and make this transformation in ways that are healthy, ecologically sound, economically stable, and just. or, we can choose to be complacent, to continue treating our world as an infinite resource pipeline and an infinite waste dump, to brace ourselves for endless wars over resources, and to trudge through one debilitating crisis after another, pushing all of humanity through a long historical period of decline—a descent into a kind of Dark Ages of the third millennium. This would be a tragic downfall for humankind, but the ultimate cause of our downfall would not be the crises themselves. The cause would be our refusal to deal with the obvious fact that the oil Age—the age of seemingly infinite abundance—is coming to an end.

All gone! Coming, ready or not (so be ready).
By J.B. Lyle
The bad news is, of course, that "the supply of oil, this amazing finite and one-time resource is now making its inevitable turn from growth to decline." The world is getting close to the bottom of the barrel. A member of the House Committee on Science, Space and Technology told us recently that the "Best thing about Earth is if you poke holes in it oil and gas come out." Not so much. As Magnuson observes in his splendid book, "When oil companies try drilling and pumping oil from 4 miles beneath the ocean, or cook it from tar sands, this is pretty good evidence that the easy-to-get oil is close to depletion." Other sources of energy, like coal, have drawbacks and, in any case, also exist in finite amounts. If this were all, it would be bad enough--but fresh water is also running out in the sense that needs are far outstripping availability.

The good news, and we will fail at our peril to act upon it, is outlined in Magnuson's book--and he gives us inspiring looks at communities and companies who are remaking themselves to be sustainable, livable, and human-scaled, with humane values. If I didn't know the term "transition movement" before, I do now. Needless to say, it's not enough to read the book and ask, "Where do I sign up?" -- it's not that simple; but at least one has a clearer picture of what our goals should be. As Nietzche said, "The greatest stupidity is forgetting what one is trying to do."

Which should be what? I saw the "going local" part of that illustrated during my most recent visit to Tuscany, last October, when I was a guest at the dinner tables of three native Tuscan families of widely varying financial circumstances. Anna had made delicious soup from mushrooms gathered in the nearby woods that day. Lucia's eggs came from the chickens scratching outside. Olive oil came from the trees visible through the window and had been pressed by Carlo in his immaculate facility next to his large house, which is heated by a furnace that uses dried, crushed olive pits as fuel. Wine--this was Chianti country--was local, often from grapes grown on my hosts' own vines. They keep pigs and cure their own hams. A party had gone out and shot the boar that was served roasted. I don't eat meat, but for those who do, their way made much more sense to me than what we get from Big Agrobusiness. Later I said to my host, "Silvio, when I go home I'll be acutely aware of how helpless I am. If I went to the supermarket and there was no food on the shelves; if I could not even get to the supermarket . . . " And, as it happens, I live in the Arizona desert, which is running out of water.

Magnuson suggests nothing less than a radical revision of our values, away from consumer culture--which, he shows clearly, has indeed led us, getting and spending, to lay waste our powers. He shows concretely, with living, functioning examples both in the United States and in other countries, that it can be done. If, like me, you thought you were "green" but were vague on the details and especially on "what now?"--this book will both engage you and fill in the blanks.

Extremely relevant and thorough; well documented.
By EthosInFreefall
Extremely relevant and thorough; well documented. Index not so great but that is common these days; more likely the publisher's fault than the author's. Unlike so many other books about economic and environmental transformation, this book goes beyond what is wrong and provides possible solutions and a plan of actual action. It is shocking to rediscover how long ago accurate predictions of our current situation and not-so-distant future predicaments were made and ignored by government, business, and society in general. At the same time, it was extremely encouraging to discover how many people are actually actively doing things to help provide positive future possibilities through experimentation and actively adapting to outcomes. I have discovered that it is still very difficult to communicate the basic concepts of environmental sustainability to many whose ideological and political posturing shuts out this kind of information. There is still much work to be done in conveying the importance of sustainability to the general public.

Wonderful Book!!
By TrailGirl
This book is beautifully written and kept me engaged from cover to cover. The message of Magnuson's book is hopeful and timely. I think anyone will find inspiration from reading this as I did. This is also the perfect follow up to his first book, Mindful Economics. I highly recommend it.

After the death of their rock star father from a drug overdose, three very different sisters are forced together to decide what to do with their inheritance. But who was Mik DeSalle? Even though they share blood, they did not have the same father – Evelyn Shelton's father was Richard Shelton, a young man from Pittsburgh's working class who had a dream; Lucille Williams' father was Mik DeSalle, the famous guitarist with Sheffield Steel who left Richard Shelton behind as soon as he left his first family and boarded a plane to Los Angeles; Soleil DeSalle's father was a musician past his prime, slipping into drugs and apathy with his new Hollywood wife. Once the sisters decide to work together, they find that others want to share the wealth for their own selfish reasons. Faith, Soleil's drug addict mother, joins with Brad, Evelyn's exhusband, to get part of the fortune. But Faith doesn't just want money; she wants revenge, especially against Mariah Williams, Lucille's mother and Mik's one true love. But for the sisters to find happiness and peace and to triumph over the obstacles placed in their path, they need to reveal everything to each other. And that includes what really happened to Evelyn's brother Ricky – and what really happened to Mik.

Good Read
By Mae
I stumbled across this book in my library and it held my attention from the first page. Each woman in this book has a complicated story that creates an interesting dynamic within the book. With music playing such a large role in the book I wanted to listen to the song that they performed at the end. I thoroughly enjoyed this book and I hope to read more by Beatrice M. Hogg in the future.

Amazon.com Review
A Conversation with Mark Galer, Author of Adobe Photoshop Elements 10: Unleash the Hidden Performance of Elements Mark Galer

Inspiration
The famous photographer Ansel Adams was once quoted as saying that if the negative was the music score, then his work in the darkroom was his performance. My own post-production skills were also learned in the darkroom during my own undergraduate studies and I have always considered that post-production is an essential aspect of the holistic process of creating an image. I teach my students that the camera does NOT faithfully record a scene--the camera merely interprets it. Photoshop, however, is capable of rendering an image to appear how we first saw and experienced the scene. Photoshop is capable of restoring the emotional reality as well as altering reality.

My workflow
Most of the time I have previsualized the outcome before I start editing an image, so the end point for the editing procedure is dictated by how quickly I can achieve this goal. As I know how to drive the software (I am a self-confessed control freak) this usually happens in a matter of minutes rather than hours. Occasionally I may find myself working on an image where I do not have a final outcome in mind--I can see something I like in the original but something needs to happen to elevate it to a folio image. On these occasions I will edit the colour and tonality in Adobe Camera Raw (as this editing space is built for speed). I often see students nudging sliders slowly, waiting for some magic to happen, but I would advocate big and bold sweeps with the controls so you can find the visual breaking point that each slider can inflict upon an image before winding back to the most appropriate setting. As I work with a smart object workflow (where the Raw files are embedded in layers) there is no absolute ending to the edit process. As ACR (Adobe Camera Raw) gets better and better over the coming years I will find myself re-editing a file to access superior demosaicing, sharpening or noise reduction.

My favorite subject
My personal work is now dominated by landscapes. This has not always been the case but now I find shooting landscapes at dawn gives me the most reward. I enjoy planning the best vantage point, at the best time of day and I have taken to using mobile apps such as the Photographer's Ephemeris to help me plan the perfect shoot. Prior to landscapes it was editorial stories that incorporated events or people as the main focus for the story. My final assignment at college was to document the last working coal mine in the Rhondda valley in South Wales and my most in-depth editorial story to date was to document my own 2-year "round-the-world" charity trip on a motorcycle in the late 1980s (about 20 years before Ewan McGregor's "long-way-round"). The subjects that are intriguing me most, at the current moment in time, are time-lapse, compositing video and HDR photography (High Dynamic Range). The advent of video on DSLR cameras and portable tablet devices such the iPad has shaken the industry vigorously and I always like to be engaged in change rather than stand back and watch it happen. I am also obsessed with building the best automated actions and making them available on my website.

Most powerful editing feature in Photoshop
My favorite shortcut would have to be the "Stamp Visible" shortcut (probably because Adobe has never officially documented it). For a Mac it is Command + Option + Shift + E and for a PC it is Ctrl + Alt + Shift + E. Next to this shortcut it would have to be the shortcuts for changing the blend mode of a layer. As a "know-it-all" user I don't have to cycle through the layer blend modes looking for the one that might work; I can just hit the shortcut for the blend mode that takes me straight through to the mathematical answer that resolves a visual problem or task in hand. I have found the Layer blend modes to be the most under-utilized editing feature for inexperienced users. I find them so useful I devoted a whole chapter to them in my Photoshop Essential Skills book and they are a dominant feature of the Maximum Performance projects for Photoshop Elements users. The essential blend modes are invaluable time savers.

The most powerful new features to arrive in Photoshop in recent years are Adobe Camera Raw 6 for its enhanced noise reduction, creating a post-crop vignette and sharpening controls, Merge to HDR pro (especially its de-ghosting feature) and the new Refine Edge feature in CS5 that makes hair extraction really fast. For Photoshop Elements users who do not have access to some of these features (elements) I explore alternative, and sometimes unique, workflows that allow sophisticated composites and image enhancements. I have to admit to enjoying the challenge of writing a Photoshop Elements book that aims to show users how to engage in professional quality editing with a piece of software that has a few features (elements) missing. The workflows I create circumnavigate the shortcomings of the Elements concept (budget software with a couple of editing features short of a six-pack!).

Fantastic Tutorial Guide
By RLC
Firstly I work with the newest version of Photoshop on a near daily basis. I only have elements so I can see the layout to help friends and family accomplish what they want with it. Having recently purchased Elements 10 for a family member and myself, I thought this book might provide a guide to new features so I could get up to speed quickly. What I found was a treasure rather than a guide!

This book has shown me the incredible advances in elements since version 6.0 and I am awestruck by the number of features that are shared between the full version of photoshop and Elements 10.

The book itself is very nice, great color, nice thick pages that don't bleed through, nice tacticle feel. It is written in tutorial format with clear and complete instructions. This is all backed up by HD Movies, all of the images used in the book, full layerd PDS files, selections already made to save you time and to see what you should be doing, actions, in short loads of great goodies.

The book is broken into 3 sections: Optomize, Enhance, and Composites. With a great selection of tutorials with not only step by step instructions on how, but the whys as well. You are shown how to use Adobe Camera Raw. Heck he even shows you a "Secret" workaround to use 16 bit images in Elements! Yep, 16 bit editing in a program that doesn't allow it!

I won't list each tutorial by name and description as one could look at the table of contents online. But I will say that they are all quite nice and you will be able to apply what you learn to your own photos and produce outstanding results!

The author states that many photograhers can get along just fine with Elements and after reading this book I would tend to agree.

I highly recommend this title I think it would be excellent for any photographer that has or is considering Elements 10 and does not have the time or resources to get into the full version of Photoshop. With that said could I stop using Photoshop and use Elements? No, but my uses are beyond just doing the things shown in the tutorials. Further, I think this title would be useful for digital scrapbookers as there are some great image enhancement and compositing tutorials. I am still saying to myself...Wow, you can do that with Elements now!

I will leave you with my thought that this book is worth a lot more than the asking price. Kudos to Mark Galer and Dr. Chattaraj.

A gift from a Master
By Terry O'Brien
If anyone rates this less than 5 stars because they didn't know what they were buying, shame on them for writing a review.

This book by Mark Galer is so good and so detailed and shows the beauty of the software so well that Mark has delivered a gift to us serious hobbyist photographers. Everything you will want to know how to do eventually is already covered.

Do you just need to make some camera adjustments such as using Adobe Lightroom would get you? Mark explained Adobe Camera Raw in a way that I realized I never really knew how to make proper adjustments. I am not sure I need Lightroom except for cataloging my photos.

Need to just bring out more detail than simple adjustments could do? Mark takes you into a beautiful chapter on polishing your photographs.

Do you have an under-exposed picture? Mark shows how to capture the detail back, but not just in the picture, in different areas of the picture, piece by piece.

Do you know what adjustment layers are? Do you know what gradient layers are? Do you know what blending modes do? You will. Each project focuses on a specialty you will eventually need.

DO you want to extract people and place them in period pieces or different settings? Do you want to bring every strand of hair with you? It is here.

Mark says Photoshop Elements 10 can deliver so much power that a full copy of Photoshop is not needed. I believe him.

Here is the real gift he gave. Maybe you are like me and just reading how to do something isn't as good as someone sitting next to you explaining it step by step. Mark does that. Each chapter has a free movie with step by step instructions. Not a 5 minute tip, a full blown 20-30 minute rendition.

Here is the caveat, you must be prepared to sit with the software and the book and movie and actually learn it by using it. You have to be serious about what you want and the level you want to go. Any success in life requires effort and dedication. To those people willing to put forth the effort, there is no better resource than this wonderful gift.
