My favorite Elder Race novella

Assassin turned guard, Xanthe protects the Dark Fae Queen. She's by her side when attending events and meetings, including the ones with Chancellor Aubrey Riordan. Handsome and powerful, a simple commoner like herself shouldn't fantasize about a man like Aubrey but when someone tries to kill him, Xanthe alone will be charged with his safety. Aubrey is still saddened by the betrayal of his wife when she tried to assassinate Queen Niniane. Xanthe is the first woman he has cared for since and knows there's more to the silent beauty than what she allows others to see. He'll use their time alone to bring out her passion and convince her she's much more than a simple commoner.
Xanthe hides her emotions well but desires companionship and love. The only male she has eyes for is one she believes she can't have. I didn't give much thought about Aubrey after reading Storm's Heart but there's more fight and stubbornness in him than I gave him credit for. He's kind to his servants and loyal to his queen but what I loved most was how he treated Xanthe. The only one who cares about their social status is Xanthe and he plans to convince her that doesn't matter, whether she likes it or not. Aubrey brought out a playfulness and passion in Xanthe that upon first meeting her, I wasn't sure she had. Before I didn't think of Aubrey as being an alpha but by the end I was convinced and loved every minute of it.
The ending surrounding the attempt on Aubrey's life and who was behind it was anti-climatic but if that was the tradeoff for being able to watch their relationship go from admiring at a distance to sweetly meaningful and hot, I'm more than ok with that. We get to see Tiago and Niniane again and learn the origins of the mysterious Tarot deck that have been roaming around the Elder Races novellas. I hope this isn't the last we'll see of the deck because I liked the minor mischief they caused.
My favorite of the Elder Races novellas, Hunter's Season brought two characters together I didn't give much thought towards and made me a fan. Xanthe and Aubrey were really great and if I wasn't afraid of Xanthe and her assassin skills, I'd want Aubrey for myself.

My favorite piece in the entire Elder Races series!

I love Thea Harrison's Elder Races series. I truly, truly do. It's magical, full of amazing world-building, characters that light up the pages, and intense, passionate romance. All of the full-length books and novellas have been a sheer joy to experience. One of the most well-crafted paranormal worlds ever, and the romance is just incredible. If you have not experienced this writer's talent yet, get with the program!
That being said, of all the amazing pieces of fiction set in the Elder Races world, this novella is my favorite so far. The world-building was minimal, but the love story was one of the most beautiful I've ever read. I was touched beyond belief as I watched Aubrey and Xanthe's love blossom and consume them. Seeing as she had to care for him while his body recovered from a brutal attack, it was only a matter of time before their close quarters brought them closer together. It happened so naturally, so beautifully. Their reactions and inhibitions and emotions were so realistic and palpable. On the lighter side, I loved when Aubrey playfully teased Xanthe after he realized that she had a crush on him. And I love how he occasionally slipped out of his political role and said BLEEP. It made me laugh just as much as Xanthe. It's really hard not to love these two.
Of course, it did not hurt that Tiago, sexy beast that he is, had a few scenes. I sure do miss him, and he hasn't changed a bit. Always professional, but still putty in Niniane's hands. Heh. And they don't call Niniane Tricks for nothing. That's all I have to say about that!

Xanthe is a palace guard and an assassin for the Dark Fae and until recently she has been on a long-term assignment to get justice for her Queen. That assignment is finally done and all Xanthe wants is some quiet and time alone. That doesn't last long when she is called to the palace to speak to her boss, and the mate of her Queen and is quickly asked to become one of the Queen's personal guards. Of course Xanthe agrees to work for the new Queen.
Aubrey is one of the most trusted advisors of the Queen even after the treason of his late wife, Naida, and her attempt to murder the Queen before she was even crowned. Now Aubrey works as an advisor and also at getting his life back in order. One of the things that Aubrey has realized is that his life with Naida had been lacking in many ways. When an attack seriously injures Aubrey, it's up to the quick thinking of the royal couple and Xanthe to protect him.
Xanthe readily agrees to protect and care for Aubrey in secret. These last few weeks have shown her that Aubrey is nothing like his late wife and others of the elite who tried to destroy the royal family. He is nice and funny and shows that he cares for the people who work around him. Xanthe knows she can never express the feelings she has for Aubrey but being able to help him will be enough she hopes. Aubrey doesn't understand why he is with Xanthe at first, but quickly finds out she is his nurse and guard until he heals. Having Xanthe doing everything for him goes against everything that Aubrey believes in but at first there is nothing he can do about it. As Aubrey heals, feelings for Xanthe grow until the air is all but pulsing around them and then it explodes. Passion is fast and furious between them but will their places in society keep them apart once they are back in their normal places in life or does fate have something special in mind for these two special Fae?
An assassin and a trusted advisor learn that even those who believe that love has past them by can find their forever. Xanthe and Aubrey discover just what love means in Hunter's Season. I was so happy to see these two get their forever love after seeing how badly Aubrey had been hurt finding out his wife was a murderous traitor. I also knew that Xanthe deserved her chance at love after seeing how honorable she was even while carrying out her job. If you haven't seen these two special Fae, you can find Xanthe in Devil's Gate and Aubrey in Storm's Heart. Seeing how fast both fell in love, told me that this was a match not even Fae social structure could break apart. I have to also admit that I loved the match making that put Xanthe and Aubrey together long enough for them to give in to their feelings and just who was behind it. Seeing how sneaky Aubrey was at getting beneath Xanthe's guard to the inner woman had me smiling each and every time he did it. Hunter's Season is a perfect love story that might never have happened without a small push, and it has a spicy touch of suspense to keep it lively.
