Tell Me How This Ends: General David Petraeus and the Search for a Way Out of Iraq, by Linda Robinson

After a series of disastrous missteps in its conduct of the war, the White House in 2006 appointed General David Petraeus as the Commanding General of the coalition forces. Tell Me How This Ends is an inside account of his attempt to turn around a failing war.

Linda Robinson conducted extensive interviews with Petraeus and his subordinate commanders and spent weeks with key U.S. and Iraqi divisions. The result is the only book that ties together military operations in Iraq and the internecine political drama that is at the heart of the civil war.

Replete with dramatic battles, behind-doors confrontations, and astute analysis, the book tells the full story of the Iraq War’s endgame, and lays out the options that will be facing the next president when he or she takes office in January 2009.

From School Library Journal
Robinson (author in residence, Johns Hopkins Univ.; Masters of Chaos) tackles a subject that has been the focus of the nation's attention since 2003. Although it can be easy to overlook yet another book on Iraq, she brings an insider's perspective to the subject. Based on her reporting, interviews, travels to Iraq, and unpublished sources, her book focuses on both military and political issues, lessons learned in the early years of the war, General Petraeus's approach to the latter phase of the war, the results of his approach, and suggestions for the next administration. Robinson does a great job of refreshing the reader's memories about events in Iraq before and after Petraeus; however, her own right-leaning political beliefs occasionally come through, and some readers may find her tone one-sided. For those less well versed in the Iraq War, a map and a list with the "Principal Cast of Characters" come in handy. Recommended for larger public and academic libraries.—Jenny Seftas, Southwest Florida Coll. Lib., Fort Myers

Review
“New York Times Notable Book of the Year”

James Traub, New York Times Book Review, October 5, 2008
“…the first book about this new Iraq. It’s a first-rate piece of work, probing and conscientious.”

David Kirkpatrick, The New York Times, October 26, 2008
“an admiring account of the troop “surge” in Iraq that Mr. McCain was among the first to embrace.”

Colonel Gregory Fontenot, Military Review, November/December issue
“As a rule, hyperbole is permissible for the ‘blurbs’ on the jacket of books and not in reviews, but in the case of Linda Robinson’s Tell Me How This Ends, it’s a hard one to follow. Robinson’s book is among the best written about the war in Iraq….”

Military Times, November 17, 2008
“The author who persuaded press-shy Special Forces soldiers to open up in the fascinating “Masters of Chaos: The Secret History of the Special Forces” (PublicAffairs, 2004) has done it again. This time, she persuaded Petraeus — now head of U.S. Central Command — and others in Iraq to talk, and she listened. And evidently, she took good notes. The result is not as dramatic as “Chaos,” but given the themes — politics and management — the insights in “Tell Me How This Ends” make the book worthwhile contemporary history and, foremost, military biography.”

John Nagl, Army Magazine, December issue
“Likely to remain the best analysis of General Petraeus’ role in the decisive years of the war in Iraq short of the general’s own memoirs.”

Tell Me How This Ends: A First Draft of History
By Joseph J. Collins
Linda Robinson's "Tell Me How This Ends: General Petraeus and the Search for a Way Out of Iraq" is a superb addition to the next wave of Iraq War literature: the Surge Assessments. Hitting the ground before new books by Gordon, Ricks, Woodward, et al., Robinson of the "US News and World Report" tells more than the tale of how a General and his wizards turned around a failed military effort. "Tell Me How This Ends" is a holistic picture of the Surge. It takes the reader from fractious discussions in the White House --- where a beleaguered President pushed aside all of his senior military advisors to go the extra mile for success --- down to the burning fighting vehicles of the troops who bought battlefield progress with their blood. Robinson's battle stories of the 5th Cavalry, 26th Infantry, 23d Infantry, 10th Mountain Division, and the Marines in Anbar will quiet those who think we can't take a punch or fight this kind of war.

At the same time, Robinson knows her counterinsurgency theory. She portrays the struggle for Iraq as essentially a political contest and spends many pages discussing how Ambassador Ryan Crocker and his team prodded the Maliki government to act in the whole nation's interest. Among the more interesting pages are those on the Awakening, the process whereby Sunni tribesmen were turned against the vicious, foreign influences of Al Qaeda. Equally interesting were the chapters on how the central (Shiite-dominated) Iraqi government is dealing with those armed Sunnis, who are, at least for now, nominally on their side. Another highlight --- at least for this old soldier-bureaucrat --- was the inner workings of Team Petraeus and how this remarkable General adapted a standard military bureaucracy to the task of politico-military innovation. The cooperation documented here between the Embassy and the Command was also exemplary.

All of these issues are covered with great insight, fueled by experienced, on-the-ground reporting. There is a minimum of anonymous, third-hand sources in this book. Most of the participants speak clearly here in their own words, or through first hand observations, or by their subsequent actions. If good journalism is the first draft of history, we can be well satisfied with Robinson's contribution. The title passage --- tell me how this ends --- was actually a rhetorical question from then-Major General Petraeus at the start of the Iraq war. In a twist of historical irony, the questioner became responsible for crafting the political-military answer to his own question. Much progress has been made, but as Petraeus himself has recently noted, we are not yet ready for dancing in the end zone. This is the critical set of issues covered holistically by Linda Robinson in this well-reported and highly readable book. She has set the bar high for those who come after her.

This review represents my personal views and does not represent the policy or opinion of any U.S. government entity.

A Plan and a Man
By KLF
In his acclaimed study of counterinsurgency, LEARNING TO EAT SOUP WITH A KNIFE, John Nagl includes this note from Vicount Montgomery of El Alamein, to the Colonial Secretary,
" Dear Lyttelton, Malaya
We must have a plan.
Secondly we must have a man.
When we have a plan and a man, we shall succeed: not otherwise.
Yours Sincerely,
Montgomery (F.M.)"

Linda Robinson, in her brilliantly conceived and executed, TELL ME HOW THIS ENDS: GENERAL DAVID PETRAEUS AND THE SEARCH FOR A WAY OUT OF IRAQ. addresses the Iraq war in terms of both the plan - how it was developed, adapted, and executed - and the man: Petraeus. In so doing, she has written a classic analysis that ranges from U.S. national policy through the levels of strategy and operations down to the tactical and back again. In telling the story of General Petraeus and his plan she also tells the tales of the other actors, American and Iraqi, Ambassadors and Generals, Lt. Colonels, Captains, Sergeants, soldiers and Marines. And she shows how the smoke and sounds of battle (and the silences) flow from policies, plans, and military doctrine.

Robinson's story focuses on David Petraeus and takes the reader through a series of key mentorships and experiences. The most important mentor was General John R. Galvin who encouraged Petraeus to seek his doctorate and brought him into contact with counteinsurgency in 1986 when Galvin was the commander of the U.S. Southern Command in Panama. Robinson notes, in this context, that Petraeus co-authored Galvin's important article, "Uncomfortable Wars" dealing with counterinsurgency in Latin America published in the Army War College journal, PARAMETERS, and later in Max Manwaring's edited volume by the same title. From this background and later experiences in Iraq, Petraeus led the effort to redefine Army and Marine Corps counteinsurgency doctrine while commanding the Army's Combined Arms Center.

For this, Petraeus assembled a team under the leadership of his West Point classmate, Con Crane, and including LTC John Nagl. Robinson points out the debt the authors acknowledge to Manwaring's work on small wars issues. From the doctrine that his efforts produced, the newly promoted four star General Petraeus developed the strategy that came to be known as "the surge" (of which the troop surge was only a small, if important, part).

Robinson uses this story to show how an effective military commander works to achieve unity of effort up to the political level, laterally with the American ambassador in Iraq, and down to the troops under his command. In the process, she demosntrates the difficulties inherent in coalition counterinsurgent warfare.

The weakest section of the book is her last chapter (which is not very weak at all) where she suggests approaches for the future in Iraq. The only problem is that much of the future is now and some of her suggestions have been overtaken by events.

That said, the only appropriate words for the book are superlatives!

Excellent for an OBIEE Developer/Admin/Professional
By K. McGinley
Nowhere will you find a more comprehensive look at Oracle Exalytics from start to finish than in this book. Starting with the approach to the engineered system, the book winds through the hardware components, the software components, the features unique to Oracle Exalytics, and eventually leads into the outline of a process a reader could follow if he were testing his own OBIEE system on an Oracle Exalytics box. It should come as no surprise, then, that one of the core audiences for this book is someone who is pretty familiar with OBIEE and most likely serves as the administrator of an existing OBIEE deployment.

Another audience for the book is the OBIEE professional who understands parts of Oracle Exalytics, but doesn't quite have the full picture. This book does a good job venturing into areas that aren't typically covered in great detail elsewhere by Oracle, such as the Integrated Lights Out Management (ILOM). There are quite a number of pages devoted to ILOM, which I have not seen covered elsewhere, and that adds to the value-for-money quotient when considering whether to purchase this book or not.

If you're someone who needs to make a value-based decision on whether to purchase Oracle Exalytics or not, this book is not for you. The author never attempts to address the question of "should you or shouldn't you," nor does he try to address the "so what?" This book is really good at dissecting Oracle Exalytics and examining the parts, but never offers why any of those parts are inherently good (or bad). This is to be expected, to a degree, given that this book is really a small portion of the much larger developer's guide by the same author.

The second area that I found the book doesn't really attempt to tackle are some of the nuances of the parts and pieces of Exalytics. As mentioned before, it does an excellent job of dissecting everything, but it doesn't really prod and poke. For example, there are quite a number of explanations of various options within the Summary Advisor, and recommendations on values and settings are made, but no exploration of different settings are discussed. These are definitely harder topics to discuss, and perhaps not realistic for the scope of a book like this. But if you're the type of reader that likes to step off the beaten path and explore these things, the book won't take you there.

Most people will find that "Oracle Exalytics Revealed" gives them a much better technical understanding of Oracle Exalytics than before they read it. The book is extremely thorough and easy to follow. It was also written in the context of testing your own OBIEE environment on Oracle Exalytics, and I find this narrative incredibly useful to explore the product. As long as you buy the book with the proper expectations of its contents, I believe you will be extremely satisfied with the results.

Exalytics + OBIEE + Times Ten
By Amazon Customer
Just bought the kindle version of the book.
Coming from Hyperion world, i was expecting there is a sample of times-ten combined with essbase on OBIEE deployment.
However, the book only covers the technical of exalytics (pretty deep on the setting/configuration of the machine) and OBIEE + the Times Ten samples.
Some suggestion to consider, adding the steps of exalytics machine virtualization.
Anyway, thanks a lot to Mark for writing the first book of exalytics.

Opting Out: Losing the Potential of America's Young Black Elite, by Maya A. Beasley

Why has the large income gap between blacks and whites persisted for decades after the passage of civil rights legislation? More specifically, why do African Americans remain substantially underrepresented in the highest-paying professions, such as science, engineering, information technology, and finance? A sophisticated study of racial disparity, Opting Out examines why some talented black undergraduates pursue lower-paying, lower-status careers despite being amply qualified for more prosperous ones.

To explore these issues, Maya A. Beasley conducted in-depth interviews with black and white juniors at two of the nation’s most elite universities, one public and one private. Beasley identifies a set of complex factors behind these students’ career aspirations, including the anticipation of discrimination in particular fields; the racial composition of classes, student groups, and teaching staff; student values; and the availability of opportunities to network. Ironically, Beasley also discovers, campus policies designed to enhance the academic and career potential of black students often reduce the diversity of their choices. Shedding new light on the root causes of racial inequality, Opting Out will be essential reading for parents, educators, students, scholars, and policymakers.

Review
"This cogent and persuasively argued book should set off a national discussion about the urgent need to diversify the American occupational structure. Writing with force and clarity, Beasley exhibits a breadth of multidisciplinary knowledge in sociology, political science, economics, psychology, and educational research. By the end, I was convinced that the problem "Opting Out" highlights is a deep and critical one that mandates strong policy and practice innovations. Beasley's analysis offers insight into how higher education and business officials could act to reduce the growing black-white wealth gap."

--Prudence L. Carter, Stanford University

""Opting Out" takes on one of America's biggest failures, the disaffection from the American dream of a large portion of its best-educated Black young people. Beasley's analysis of the problem is compelling. She goes well beyond trend analysis and examines the interior life of this population to understand why, with seemingly endless opportunity, talented and highly educated young black people are opting out of the mainstream of our economic life. With "Opting Out", Beasley has made the most important contribution to the sociology of race relations in the last decade. This is a must read for parents as well as policymakers, for school superintendents and college presidents. With America's competitiveness at risk, we can hardly afford to squander this human capital."

--David A. Thomas, author of Breaking Through: The Making of Minority Executives i

"This study is field-advancing. The analysis is balanced, powerfully coherent, and original. It brings into public view a poignant dilemma. Partly because of the reality of racism, but also partly because many universities now reinforce the anticipation of racism, young black women and men are making self-limiting occupational choices. The result: deep inequality for better-off as well as worse-off African Americans."

--Paul M. Sniderman, Stanford University

""Opting Out" makes a compelling argument that the continuing presence of racism in US society decisively and negatively affects the careers of some of our most talented black college students. These students form a distinctive pool, facing challenges quite different from both white students and black students who have not reached the same level of academic performance. Through the experiences of these students, Beasley shows that the racism faced by talented blacks of this generation is qualitatively different from previous ones as she weaves together a history of black social mobility that is often misinterpreted and not well known among educators and policymakers."

--Barbara Schneider, Michigan State University and the University of Chicago

advocating STEM majors among Black students
By Jeffery Mingo
Beasley said Black college students don't hang with a range of other students. She also said their college majors are not as diverse as white counterparts. They want to go into jobs they deem "to help the Black community" and don't apply for other jobs that create or promote wealth. She compares Black students at Berkeley and Stanford regarding these concerns.

It was hard to digest this book because I exemplified the type of Black student she described. You can tell me that engineers and computer scientists make hand-over-foot money and that never made me think I could survive in those majors. If I could choose between an African-American Studies class and a physics class, I would never even touch the latter. I hate the stereotype that Blacks can't excel in science and math, but I do act as an example of it. When I was in college, it irritated me to no end that minority scholarship books would have info on about 1 million Black engineering scholarships, but not one for Black psych. majors, or Black lit. majors, or Black sociology majors.

Recently I read a book about upper-class Blacks. I forgot the name, but it should be easy for interested readers to find. The author stated of this group they hang with each other, not because of rejections by whites, but because they love and enjoy the company of other Blacks. It makes me proud that my community is "a community of caring." When I hear younger Blacks say they want to work at programs for inner-city youth, I applaud them. I don't tell them, "Skip all that and study nanotechnology!" This reminds me of how some say Blacks would be better off by voting for diverse candidates and thus should support Republicans more. However, other Blacks and myself make very strong, cogent arguements about why we are loyal to the Democratic Party. I highly doubt that an Asian-American researcher would argue their community needs more people to major in 18th-century poetry or something, as they face the opposite stereotypes of Blacks.

When I was in grad school at Berkeley, I met a Chicana who got into Stanford, but chose Berkeley. Personally, I think she made a mistake. Stanford has affirmative action and cares about diversity; Berkeley does not. Let's be real: it's FAAAAAAAR more difficult to get into Stanford than Berkeley for people of all races. But my unsolicited two cents is that if you, especially a Black person, gets into both schools, please go to the South Bay and not the East Bay, if you know what I mean.

Sometimes this book felt all over the place. Still, I would love it if this book can encourage Black students to major in STEM, but I couldn't have been that candidate back in my schooling years. The STEM majors I knew didn't care for reading long sociological studies, so I don't know if that group who can be influenced would spend the time on this text. This scholar is making a nice argument and I wish her well. However, I just can't see the trends she highlights as disappearing any time soon.

Beginnings, Second Edition: The Art and Science of Planning Psychotherapy, by Mary Jo Peebles

Utilizing a decade's worth of clinical experience gained since its original publication, Mary Jo Peebles builds and expands upon exquisitely demonstrated therapeutic approaches and strategies in this second edition of Beginnings. The essential question remains the same, however: How does a therapist begin psychotherapy? To address this delicate issue, she takes a thoughtful, step-by-step approach to the substance of those crucial first sessions, delineating both processes and potential pitfalls in such topics as establishing a therapeutic alliance, issues of trust, and history taking. Each chapter is revised and expanded to include the latest treatment research and modalities, liberally illustrated with rich case material, and espouse a commitment to the value of multiple theoretical perspectives. Frank and sophisticated, yet eminently accessible, this second edition will be an invaluable resource for educators, students, and seasoned practitioners of any therapeutic persuasion.

Review

"With clear prose that reveals her clinical wisdom; (Peebles) emphasizes the importance of developing a working alliance...A large portion of the book is devoted to a categorization of concerns that is nothing short of brilliant... She goes out of her way to welcome readers of other theoretical orientations by largely avoiding psychoanalytic jargon and by explaining herself in plain English...This book is aimed at beginners, but the clinical wisdom is so pervasive that anyone can enjoy it... Peebles is the best kind of consultant; she reminds you of who you are when you are at your best (a leitmotif of the book is doing this for patients). As a practitioner for almost 40 years, I was delighted to find what felt like an old friend and colleague, someone who sees the world as I do, but with more clarity." --Michael Karson, PhD, JD., ABPP, University of Denver--Graduate School of Professional Psychology, Psychotherapy Bulletin

"The second edition of this wonderful guide for psychotherapists is a gift to all of us who struggle with tailoring the therapeutic approach to the specific, idiosyncratic qualities of each patient. Mary Jo Peebles combines rigorous scholarship and her own subjective observations about how to begin psychotherapy in a way that assures the treatment course will follow the optimal path that both patient and therapist seek. She illuminates many of the dark uncertainties that haunt therapists as they approach their new patients, and she provides invaluable advice for even the most experienced therapists. I heartily recommend this volume to both new students and senior clinicians." - Glen O. Gabbard, M.D., author, Long-Term Psychodynamic Psychotherapy

"Beginnings is an outstanding introduction to the craft and science of psychotherapy for trainees from a broad range of professional backgrounds and theoretical orientations. Peebles seamlessly weaves together theory, research, and clinical wisdom with the unique voice and sensibility of a master clinician and teacher. Replete with vivid clinical examples and hard-earned insights, this book stands in a class of its own. Readers will find themselves carried along on a panoramic tour of the psychotherapy landscape that is both practical and inspiring." - Jeremy D. Safran, Ph.D., Professor of Psychology, New School for Social Research, and Faculty, NYU Postdoctoral Program in Psychotherapy and Psychoanalysis

"This gracefully written book elaborates the well-founded belief that a good beginning holds the key to effective psychotherapy. Peebles marshalls in convincing fashion the ample evidence that good beginnings have two essential components: a positive working alliance characterized by trust, respect, and positive expectations and a clear treatment focus consisting of patient-therapist agreement on the goals of the treatment and the procedures that will be followed in pursuing these goals. In doing so, she combines extensive coverage of relevant theoretical formulations and research findings with detailed guidelines for implementing good beginnings and numerous illustrative case excerpts. This is one of those rare books that will be appreciated by psychotherapy researchers and practitioners alike and valued by psychotherapists at all levels of experience." - Irving B. Weiner, Ph.D., Clinical Professor of Psychiatry and Neurosciences, University of South Florida

"My interest is to train therapists in evidence-based treatments that have the validated treatment methods but typically lack a framework to incorporate the therapist's emotional and personal experiences toward optimizing the therapeutic relationship. The field needs Dr. Peebles' book to help us navigate the ambiguities of psychotherapy, guide us to listen before choosing the evidence-based intervention, and listen more to evaluate our choices. I like best the way she discusses the often abstract concept of boundaries; she gets right to the point of how to set healthy boundaries, be empathic, and stay connected and on course in the midst of often intense emotional struggles." - Edmund C. Neuhaus, Ph.D., ABPP, Assistant Clinical Professor of Psychology, Harvard Medical School

"When I read the first edition of Beginnings, I told my students and colleagues it was the best therapy book I had read in a decade, and it has been required reading for my students ever since. I know of no other book that offers so clear a window into the thought processes of a master clinician. With this new edition, Peebles transcends mere wisdom and achieves poetry." - Jonathan Shedler, Ph.D., Associate Professor of Psychiatry, University of Colorado School of Medicine

"Acquired over decades, Dr. Peebles' mastery of the craft is abundantly evident throughout her book; she offers readers a plethora of plans, guides, and tools, generously illustrated with clinical examples and vignettes...Therapists at all levels of experience have much to learn from the work of this master, but I wish especially that beginning therapists, who are liable to be assaulted with the injunction to practice narrowly focused, evidence-based treatments, would read this book for a glimpse of the broad vista and to appreciate the staggering array of options for interventions open to the therapist at every turn of the journey." - Jon G. Allen, Ph.D., Bulletin of the Menninger Clinic

Developing "New Eyes"
By Sheryle Gallant
"The voyage of discovery lies not in finding new landscapes, but in having new eyes"--Marcel Proust
"Beginnings, the Art and Science of Planning Psychotherapy" by Mary Jo Peebles-Kleiger, is a tremendous resource not only for working with clients in therapy, but equally in my opinion, for conceptualizing clients based on test findings. Those of us who teach assessment have long needed a text like this. In beautifully clear and compelling prose, Dr. Peebles-Kleiger combines meticulous scholarship with deeply thoughtful and provocative analyses to create a truly integrative framework for understanding those we wish to help.
I am a faculty member in the Clinical Psychology program at the University of Kansas. My specialty is personality assessment. I teach two required courses to our clinical graduate students, one on the "mechanics" of administering, scoring, and interpreting several widely used instruments (e.g., MMPI-2; Rorschach), and a second course on the integration of test findings. In 10 years of teaching assessment and report writing, I have consistently found that gaining expertise in instruments such as the Rorschach and the MMPI-2 is quite challenging for students. However, the greatest difficulty students encounter (and in my experience this is true of even the brightest students) is in developing the ability to integrate and contextualize test findings in a way that creates an accurate, rich and meaningful understanding of "a person."
This process is as fundamental in assessment as in therapy. However, unlike the therapy context in which this often occurs over a series of sessions in which information about a client is accumulated and digested, in the assessment context an examiner must integrate a great deal of information in the form of test findings that comes all at once. To do this sucessfully requires having a broad as well as deep and also flexible understanding of psychological disturbance, and this is just what Dr. Peebles-Kleiger provides in this remarkable book.
I began this review with a quote from Proust because I believe it speaks to the essence of Dr. Peebles-Kleiger new book. This is a text that can give us and our students new eyes.

A New Classic
By James H. Hutchinson
The First Issue of "Beginnings" by Mary Jo Peebles, was a fine book. The second edition, is destined a classic. Ten years of clinical experience and reflection have given the book a new grace and depth. It assembles an impressive list of qualities not usually found in the same book.
It is an excellent basic text for psychotherapists from any professional background attempting to orient him- or herself to the complexities of the field. Experienced pscyhotherapists will find new, important and interesting perspectives at every turn. The book is carefully researched and documented with 50 pages of foot notes. It is clear and readable. It is rare to find writers who can do justice to the scientific and artistic roots of treating psychiatric patients. Dr. Peebles seems to find science and art equally essential and I think, equally beautiful. It is rare to find a practitioners open and responsive to schools of thought in which they are not trained. Dr. Peebles has immersed herself in a diverse range of training and is obviously open to considering information from any source that is helpful. Where other contend she seeks an open exchange of ideas.
The book considers several essential areas. A topic she introduces early and elaborates throughout the book is creating and maintaining a trusting partnership with the patient. There is an excellent section on the different ways of obtaining and organizing the critical information needed for treatment. She stresses the necessity of accurate assessment (diagnosis) of any disease processes and distinguishes disease from the equally important detailed empathic awareness of the impact of the disease on the patient's feelings, thinking, physical capacities and social functioning (illness). An essential aspect of her assessment is a detailed assessment of the patient's strengths and vulnerabilities. Her formulation are sophisticated Treatment planning involves establishing mutually goals clear to both parties, selecting methods which utilize the patient's strengths and address their vulnerabilities. She sees the therapuetic process as a dialectic with the patient in which diagnostic precision, the alliance, the goals, and the means of working together are all being refined.
While her clinical vignettes are manufactured, she has so much clinical experience that they illustrate ring true. She is the first person I have ever read who has made clinical vignettes where the therapist makes comments based on different schools of therapy, so the reader can appreciate the different focus of attention and different objectives of these different schools. She does the work in 375 pages

I have the privilege of teaching beginning psychotherapy to a superb group of psychiatric residents. We have a new basic text.

Comprehensive, clear, well-written, and humane
By Marian K. Shapiro
It's been at least 20 years - probably longer - since I've read a basic book on psychotherapy as fine as this one. To give you a context (which Peebles stresses as a fundamental way of reaching the patient), I am a psychologist with over 30 years experience, specializing in the treatment of trauma; in addition, I have been an English/writing teacher, and practice as a poet. Most basic books are either ponderously written, full of over-generalizations, full of omissions, or cook-book instructive according to the author's bias. Beginnings, however, is beautifully written, with metaphors that grab the reader; relevant examples illustrate Peebles' points, and the tenor is one of humanistic and open-minded opportunity. Her reference list is long and relevant.

Beginnings is an expensive book: I wouldn't recommend it if it weren't worth every penny, both for the novice as well as the experienced therapist, with all levels in between. Go thou and buy it! Mark it up! And pass it on.

Living and Dying in Brick City: Stories from the Front Lines of an Inner-City E.R., by Sampson Davis, Lisa Frazier Page

A riveting personal exploration of the healthcare crisis facing inner-city communities, written by an emergency room physician who grew up in the very neighborhood he is now serving

Sampson Davis is best known as one of three friends from inner-city Newark who made a pact in high school to become doctors. Their book The Pact and their work through the Three Doctors Foundation have inspired countless young men and women to strive for goals they otherwise would not have dreamed they could attain. In this book, Dr. Davis looks at the healthcare crisis in the inner city from a rare perspective: as a doctor who works on the front line of emergency medical care in the community where he grew up, and as a member of that community who has faced the same challenges as the people he treats every day. He also offers invaluable practical advice for those living in such communities, where conditions like asthma, heart disease, stroke, obesity, and AIDS are disproportionately endemic.

Dr. Davis’s sister, a drug addict, died of AIDS; his brother is now paralyzed and confined to a wheelchair as a result of a bar fight; and he himself did time in juvenile detention—a wake-up call that changed his life. He recounts recognizing a young man who is brought to the E.R. with critical gunshot wounds as someone who was arrested with him when he was a teenager during a robbery gone bad; describes a patient whose case of sickle-cell anemia rouses an ethical dilemma; and explains the difficulty he has convincing his landlord and friend, an older woman, to go to the hospital for much-needed treatment. With empathy and hard-earned wisdom, Living and Dying in Brick City presents an urgent picture of medical care in our cities. It is an important resource guide for anyone at risk, anyone close to those at risk, and anyone who cares about the fate of our cities.

Praise for Living and Dying in Brick City

“A pull-no-punches look at health care from a seldom-heard sector . . . Living and Dying isn’t a sky-is-falling chronicle. It’s a real, gutsy view of a city hospital.”—Essence

“Gripping . . . a prescription to help kids dream bigger than their circumstances, from someone who really knows.”—People

“[Dr. Davis] is really a local hero. His story has inspired so many of our young people, and he’s got his finger on the pulse of what is a challenge in Newark, and frankly all across America. . . . I think his book is going to make a big impact.”—Cory Booker

“Some memoirs are heartfelt, some are informative and some are even important. Few, however, are all three. . . . As rare as it is for a book to be heartfelt, well written and inspirational, it’s even rarer for a critic to say that a book should be required reading. This ought to be included in high school curricula—for the kids in the suburbs who have no idea what life is like in the inner cities, and for the kids in the inner cities to know that there is a way out.”—The Star-Ledger

“Dramatic and powerful.”—New York Daily News

“This book just might save your life. Sampson Davis shares fascinating stories from the E.R. and addresses the inner-city health crisis. His book is an important investment in your most valuable resource: your health.”—Suze Orman, author of The Money Class

From Booklist
Davis—an African American who grew up in a tough neighborhood in Newark, aka Brick City, beat the odds, and became an emergency room doctor in the hospital where he was born—is a likable but flawed hero. And his book is a page-turner as he and Washington Post writer and editor Page, coauthor of the best-selling memoir The Pact (2002) with Davis and his best childhood friends, create memorable scenes. To compellingly tell the story of the health crisis in poor, urban America, they draw on Davis’ experiences in the emergency room and in his own family. His dad gets prostate cancer, his older sister contracts AIDS, and his older, alcoholic brother becomes paralyzed because of a fight. Davis describes trying and failing to help such emergency-room patients as a victim of domestic violence and a 700-pound woman. He tries to figure out whether sickle-cell-anemia patients who come into the ER complaining of pain truly need prescription medication or if they’re just looking for an easy fix. A personal and thought-provoking look at inner-city health. --Karen Springen

“This is one of the best books I have read in a long time. Sampson Davis’s personal story is powerful, and his experiences in the ER room underscore the lack of effective health care in our underserved communities. Newark is lucky to have him as a citizen, and we are all lucky that he has shared his insights and expertise with us in Living and Dying in Brick City. His is an important voice in the conversation on health care in this country.”—Wes Moore, author of The Other Wes Moore

“This book is living proof that behind the boarded-up windows of one of America’s most neglected cities, beyond the sorrow and the pain, there is much more than we’ve come to expect. There is hope. There is change. There is redemption for Brick City. The book will open your eyes to a part of the world that most of us only see from behind the wheel of a tightly locked car. Sampson Davis is not afraid to lift heavy objects in this world. I’m glad he shared his journey with us, so that we know it is possible.”—James McBride, author of The Color of Water

“Living and Dying in Brick City provides a fascinating look at the interesting but often terrifying life of a medical professional in a tough inner-city hospital. More importantly it provides excellent and very practical advice about healthcare issues that are relevant to people of every socioeconomic group. It is entertaining while being helpful.” —Benjamin S. Carson Sr., MD, The Benjamin S Carson Sr MD and Dr Evelyn Spiro RN Professor and Director of Pediatric Neurosurgery, The Johns Hopkins Medical Institutions

Gritty, Uplifting, and Informative Tale Of A Doctor At An Inner City Hospital
By Jack
"Living and Dying in Brick City" is an eye-opening book by Dr. Sampson Davis, previously best known for co-writing "The Pact." In "The Pact," Dr. Davis described the bond that he made with two other kids with whom he grew up in the inner city. They decided that they would all rise out of their difficult surroundings and become physicians, and all three have lived up to that promise. In "Living and Dying" Dr. Davis returns back home to Newark as an Emergency Room attending physician, where he works in Beth Israel Hospital, a tough inner city hospital that sees its share of drama and tragedies. He tells the gritty and affecting stories of many of his memorable patients. Their stories are at times uplifting and at times sad reminders of how our society sometimes fails its least fortunate.

One fascinating story involved a young man who arrived in the ER with critical gunshot wounds. He was transported to the ICU where he died. Dr. Davis recognized his name on the patient list as a kid who accompanied him when they committed an armed robbery at the age of 17. Unlike Dr. Davis, who went on to success as a physician, this young man went in a completely different direction. It's stories like these that make one realize the small forks in the road that can determine our lives.

Unlike most other medical memoirs, this book also gives practical advice to people who are trapped in the difficult situations of many of the patients in his stories. It's a wake-up call for people to learn about the difficulties and failings of health care in major urban settings. I really enjoyed it.

This book is the latest in what I consider a recent renaissance of medical memoirs.
Twelve Patients by Dr. Eric Manheimer tells the stories of patients at the famed Bellevue Hospital, written by the former medical director there. The author pulls no punches in describing these affecting and often unusual patients in sometimes terrifying detail. Very recommended.

A must read.
By CYRIL D'CRUZ
This book can hold its own against any other similar example of medical drama, a genre very popular in print and television. If that was all it was, it would make for an exciting reading experience, but then disappear down the rabbit hole of memory. There is, however, much more to the book, which makes it truly unforgettable. The book is divided into thematic chapters with cryptic titles such as "Love Hurts" and "The Fish Bowl", that leave one guessing what they might signify. Each chapter uses actual cases that Dr Davis has encountered in training or in practice, but supplements the narrative with commentary on public health and social issues as well as personal biographical references. These three elements blend seamlessly and skillfully into each other effortlessly moving between them and yet creating a cohesive unit defining a specific problem. The descriptions of the medical cases are exciting, with all the drama encountered in an emergency room setting. The public health issues and problems are usually clearly defined and backed by statistical data that are sometimes alarming. The most gripping portion of each chapter, however is the biographical linking of the episodes and situations to the author by references to his personal story. This is the most poignant and heartwarming aspect of every chapter. Very few persons, if any, describing such events can really say "Been There, or Done That." A constant theme is "Look at me now. If I can do it, so can You."

Another unique aspect of the book is the listing of helpful information pertaining to the chapter immediately after it. Purists might balk at this unorthodox approach, arguing that such material should be relegated to the back of the book along with the citations and acknowledgements. This however, is Emergency Medicine where the need to act is acute, and one does not push off things to the end. If someone really needs to use the information listed, he has most likely made a great effort to even read the chapter and needs the information readily at hand. Other chapters may not be pertinent to him and it is unfair to make him rummage through the back of the book to search for what he may need. Furthermore, these sections are clearly demarcated by a different font and one can easily move to the next chapter without losing the narrative. If one however decides to linger over the material, there is good stuff in there even for the jaded professional.

This book should be required reading as part of all Medical School Curricula or in any form of training associated with the Health Profession. In these days of Impersonal Medicine fuelled by avarice and a push by most medical students towards the most lucrative specialities, it may be important to be reminded, that unlike many professions, the practice of Medicine is really about helping others.

If you live in an area of the country similar to Newark, and there are many such areas in Urban America, this book may help you deal with your problems. It may offer you some hope, realizing that there may be a way out, and there are resources you can turn to for help.

If you live anywhere else, you will learn about a part of the country you probably had no idea existed. It will give you something to think about when you are forced to make a detour through an area you would never venture into. It may even inspire you to want to do something about the problem. The costs of urban neglect are astronomical and are borne by the community at large, and so it makes good economic sense to do something about it.

This book will make you laugh. It will make you cry. It will make you sad. It will make you mad. It will however warm your heart and perhaps inspire you. Every penny of the $25 dollars ( Much less if you get the book on Amazon) you invest, (not spend) will return more than you paid.

If you like the book, tell your friends and neighbors about it. Donate or circulate your copies. Lead book club discussions in your community and make sure your library and schools carry it.

If you hate the book, you probably hate kittens, puppies and babies and need a nice big hug to warm your heart.

The way a doctor should be!
By Kay Wade
I agree whole-heartedly that its important to care and to let people know you care. Dr. Davis speaks the way he lives ... all the way. I have recommended this book to my daughter who lives her life in a similar way. I hope a lot of people read this inspiring book.
