About the Author
Harry Bingham has authored five novels for HarperCollins and two non-fiction titles with 4th Estate. He has signed a three book crime series deal with Orion. He was included in WHS Fresh Talent Promotion, was shortlisted for WHS's Thumping Good Read Award, and longlisted for the IMPAC Dublin International Literary Prize. A Readable Resource!

Let me start off by saying that I have never, and I mean never, read a manual or any kind of reference book all the way through. I don't think you're really even supposed to - they're reference books; you're meant to use them to look things up as needed, not sit down and read the whole giant thing in one sitting.
I read this entire book.
And not because I suddenly needed to look up every bit of the info it contains, but because it was such a pleasure to read! That's right, this huge, 350-page reference manual was written in such a witty, conversational way, that it kept me up at night reading it!
Now, I must admit that I am a bit of a nerd - I'm an English teacher, so it could be argued that I just like this kind of stuff. But I am also an aspiring writer, and Bingham does an amazing job of explaining the ins and outs of novel writing, from using correct grammar and choosing the right point of view to tell your story from, to solving problems that crop up with your plot and creating living, breathing characters. And Bingham knows his stuff, too - he himself has published numerous novels, and he even runs a company that reads and critiques manuscripts for would-be authors. His advice on getting published is invaluable and is in itself enough of a reason to buy this book.
But the most wonderful thing about this book is how readable it is. Each point Bingham makes is illustrated through the use of examples: both how-to, and how-not-to. And honestly, the excerpts he uses from various novels were so entertaining that I've put most of the books he discusses on my reading list. His commentary and explanations are brutally honest, but at the same time professional, kind, and humorous.
I highly recommend this book for anyone who is at all interested in the craft of writing. If you want to make your manuscript the best it can possibly be, and then give it the best possible chance of getting published, then you need to buy "How to Write."

Excellent resource

I have a shelf full of books on writing, and this one stands out as one of the best. Mr. Bingham has done a really thorough job of putting together great instruction along with informative, appropriate examples of what to do and what to avoid.

Absolutely the best writing book ever.

I have read a ton of books about writing and many are excellent. But this is the single best book on writing I have ever read. It is well written, clear with oodles of excellent examples, honest and encouraging. And it is deliciously entertaining!
