East Asia Before the West: Five Centuries of Trade and Tribute (Contemporary Asia in the World), by David C. Kang

From the founding of the Ming dynasty in 1368 to the start of the Opium Wars in 1841, China has engaged in only two large-scale conflicts with its principal neighbors: Korea, Vietnam, and Japan. These four territorial and centralized states have otherwise fostered peaceful and long-lasting relationships with one another, and as each has grown more powerful, the atmosphere around them has stabilized.

Focusing on the role of the "tribute system" in maintaining stability in East Asia and in fostering diplomatic and commercial exchange, Kang contrasts this history against the example of Europe and East Asian states' skirmishes with nomadic peoples to the north and west. Although China has been the unquestioned hegemon in the region, with other political units considered second, the tributary order has entailed military, cultural, and economic dimensions that have afforded its participants immense latitude. Europe's "Westphalian" system, on the other hand, has pursued formal equality among states and has balanced power politics, leading to incessant interstate conflict. Scholars tend to view Europe's experience as universal, but Kang upends this tradition, emphasizing East Asia's formal hierarchy as an international system with its own history and character. This approach not only recasts our understanding of East Asian relations but also defines a model that applies to other hegemonies outside the European order.

Review

By researching the full range of China's relationships, including Southeast Asia, Korea, and Japan, as well as nomadic troubles, David C. Kang balances the perspective of the whole regional picture. A remarkable achievement.

(Brantly Womack, University of Virginia)

In a fascinating and deeply illuminating sequel to his acclaimed China Rising, David C. Kang challenges the Eurocentric bias of American and European theories of international relations. With apologies to Rudyard Kipling, Kang's main message is that 'East is East and West is West and sometimes the twain shall meet,' and he delivers it through smart arguments, great imagination, and compelling historical synthesis. All serious students of international relations, from both East and West, will have to come to terms with Kang's provocative arguments.

(Peter Katzenstein, Cornell University)

David C. Kang has written a concise, well-judged, and most useful analysis of the historical East Asian international system and its three principles of hierarchy, status, and hegemony. In so doing, he demolishes the American discourse of 'realism,' which assumes that all states on the planet behave in the same way. With a plethora of books on 'the rise of China,' Kang's study is also essential reading for understanding the formation of the East Asian system, its contemporary functioning, and the arc of its future.

(Bruce Cumings, University of Chicago, author of Dominion From Sea to Sea: Pacific Ascendancy and American Power)

Important in maintaining the ongoing discussion on whether or not there is something distinctive about interstate conduct in East Asia... immensely enjoyable and informative in its rich historical detail.

(Oliver Hensengerth International Affairs)

His study assuredly renews the debate on a contested topic in both East Asian and global history. Highly recommended.

(Choice)

This is a brilliant book, rare for a political scientists, and a must-read for experts and the general public alike.

(Survival)

Consistently intelligent... [East Asia Before the West] is one of the most stimulating books to appear in the past decade.

(Valerie Hansen H-Asia)

East Asia Before the West is an elegant mixture of political science and history.Global Asia

(John Delury Global Asia)

In his micro analysis, Kang has offered a provocative thesis, which will stimulate much analysis and discussion of traditional foreign relations in East Asia.

(Morris Rossabi Political Science Quarterly)

I recommend to anyone with a shaky grasp of East Asian history...quite a thoughtful book, and well worth your time

(Stephen M. Walt "A Realist in an Ideological Age" Foreign Policy Blog)

Fascinating information but the writing could be better
By sequoiamv
This is a subject matter I'm fascinated about, so he couldn't go wrong informing me of the historical facts. My only issue is with his writing style - he repeats himself over and over again. He'll write a sentence saying the same thing two or five paragraphs down the line, after which you just want to slap him and go, "you've already said that!". The writing can also get a little long-winded, but I suppose that's a common feature of books written by academics.

As an avid history buff, the story he tells is interesting. I only had a vague understanding of inter-Asian relationships of the past, so I can say I'm a little bit more educated about the matter now. He focuses primarily on the three sinicized societies (Korea, Vietnam and Japan) plus China itself, which helps make it succinct. It's also mainly about Chinese relations with the other three, which I suppose makes sense since East Asia back then pretty much revolved around it. He gets a litte bit into the Korean-Japanese dynamic, though I would've liked more. More in-depth info on the interactions between the non-China three would've been nice, especially Vietnam's discourse with Japan and Korea.

All in all I would recommend it, and it's also comparatively short and makes for a quick read.

Intriguing
By Akhilesh Pillalamarri
This is certainly an interesting and informative work. The thesis, which focuses on the historical tendency of an East Asia with a strong China to lean towards hegemonic peace is interesting and worth serious consideration though the jury is out on how accurate it is. More than this, Kang is right to challenge the Eurocentric bias towards theories of International Relations, which is largely built on European/Western cases. The book is also interesting as history, especially the conceptualization and formation of states in East Asia, their trade patterns and the differences between states and the tribal/nomadic groups that bordered East Asia. I felt his explanation could have been stronger with regards to this last count and he could have given a more full description of these nomadic entities. The differences between the Ming and Qing could have been highlighted more. Finally, more attention could have been given to the states of Southeast Asia, their role in the East Asian system, and the nature of those states. All in all, this was a strong book nonetheless though it could have added a few things.

Provacative Academic Treatment
By Stephen B. Wickman
Agree with the one reviewer who criticized the style points, but readers must recall that this is an academic work and the repetetiveness is part of the style of presentation. I ultimately disagree with much of the author's thesis, but he has anticipated many of my objections and dealt with them clearly in the text. I will not use this space to review them as I am working on a less academic "rebuttal" of sorts.

Siege 13: Stories, by Tamas Dobozy

Built around the events of the Soviet Budapest Offensive at the end of World War II and its long shadow, the stories in Siege 13 are full of wit, irony, and dark humor. In a series of linked stories that alternate between the siege itself and a contemporary community of Hungarian émigrés who find refuge in the West (Canada, the U.S,. and parts of Europe), Dobozy utilizes a touch of deadpan humor and a deep sense of humanity to extoll the horrors and absurdity of ordinary people caught in the crosshairs of brutal conflict and its silent aftermath.

Carefully constructing an intentionally faulty history of war and its effects on a community, Dobozy blurs the line between right and wrong, portraying a world in which one man’s betrayal is another man’s survival, and in which common citizens are caught between the pincers of aggressors, leading to actions at once deplorable, perplexing, and heroic. A psychological study in the affects of aggression, silence, and social upheaval, Dobozy's stories feature characters, "lost forever in the labyrinth built on the thin border between memories and reality, past and present, words and silence. Like Nabokov, Tamas Dobozy combines the best elements of European and American storytelling, creating a fictional world of his own."(David Albahari, author of Gotz and Meyer)

From Booklist
Canadian writer Dobozy was the inaugural Fulbright Visiting Research Chair in Creative Writing at New York University and received a PEN/O’Henry Prize for “The Restoration of the Villa Where Tíbor Kálmán Once Lived,” which appears in this story collection. The siege the book’s title refers to is that of Budapest at the end of WWII, and several other of the 13 tales are also set in and around Budapest at that time. Most, though, are stories of survivors living in exile in Canada, lives lived in the shadow of atrocities participated in, witnessed, or avoided through subterfuge or complicity. One character’s perspective summarizes the fate of many: “The things he’d seen in Budapest during the winter of 1945 had not ceased . . . as if the siege stretched right across history.” Though pedestrian prose occasionally softens the impact, these are stories worth telling, and Dobozy is a gifted storyteller in his elegant plotting and touches of surrealism. --Michael Autrey

Advance Praise
""Siege 13," Tamas Dobozy's new collection of short stories, shows us once again that he is an excellent storyteller, one of the few who keep the art of writing good short fiction alive. "These strange and intense stories [are] packed with fast-paced weirdness...treats to be savored. Dobozy, a Canadian of Hungarian descent, likes to upend old saws and twist the routine, and he does this most powerfully in the stories drawn from his European ancestry."

"The 10 first-person stories of Dobozy's debut, remarkable for their psychological and emotional complexity, yearn to make sense of eccentric and opaque behavior, sometimes by engaging in it. The first story, 'Into the Ring, ' centers on a married couple who box each other to release the mutual frustration of their inability to conceive. In the moving and funny 'Philip's Killer Hat, ' the narrator tries to dissuade his off-kilter brother from sending letters to the Thelonious Monk estate that explain the musician's tight-fitting hats 'contributed to the madness that overtook' him. He saw what the war had done to friendship after it had finished with everything else--with sympathy, with intelligence, with self-awareness, with loyalty and affection and love--all those impediments to survival, all those things that got in the way of forgetting who you were.
In the fall of 1944, the Red Army encircled Budapest, surrounding tens of thousands of German and Hungarian troops, and nearly a million civilians. The ensuing months witnessed one of the most brutal sieges of World War II, with block-to-block guerilla warfare followed by widespread disease, starvation, and unspeakable atrocities.
Richly grounded in this historical trauma and its extended aftermath, the stories in this fascinating collection alternate between the siege itself and a contemporary community of Hungarian emigres who find refuge in the West. Illuminating the horror and absurdity of war with a wit and subtlety unique to fiction, Tamas Dobozy explores a world in which right and wrong are not easily distinguished, and a gruesome past that manifests itself in perplexing, often comical ways.

Tamas Dobozy has published over fifty works of short fiction in journals such as "Granta, Agni, Fiction, One Story, " and "The Alaska Quarterly Review." In 2011, he was awarded a PEN/O. He was also awarded the inaugural Fulbright Research Chair in Creative Writing at New York University in 2009. Dobozy lives in Kitchener, Ontario, Canada.

The resurrection of death and destruction
By Joseph Psotka
Some of these short stories are truly powerful, all are exotic, and even weird, and a couple are not so good, but they are strung together with sufficient links and threads to make a satisfying larger whole. The story about self sacrifice and caring for the animals of the Budapest zoo while death and oblivion reign all around while tanks and explosives demolish the city into a winter wasteland is the one that affected me the most. The most interesting character is a former censor for the communist regime in Hungary who now runs a club for emigres in Toronto. His enigmatic sense of guilt and loss and transformation to remind himself and yet endure the loss of love is endlessly beguiling. The author loves ambiguities; leaves much that is central unstated and uses his imagination to explore the real and the latent inside his characters. The transitions that mark the loss of homeland create a wide palette for surprising insights and actions, where people can be seen from unusual perspectives. The abnormal seamlessly becomes normal. The sense of playful surprise is often used to suck the reader into unsuspecting compromises. Much is revealed and left to the imagination. The extraordinary state of siege that marked Budapest in 1945 transforms these characters and makes any metamorphosis believable, and the author takes full advantage of these possibilities to create a thoroughly enjoyable space to read. Several characters resurface in the different stories and it is sometimes shocking to see them grow and evolve..

First Generation Hungarian
By J A Schenkelberg
My parents escaped from Hungary in 1945. They were placed in a displaced persons refugee camp in Germany until 1949. Both my parents are deceased, but their strories have remained with me as I documented them for posterity.
The stories of their escape were tragic and sad. I always sensed a missing part of the their stories. Their was such a profound sadness in their reminisenses.
Mr. Dobozy's stories have helped me to understand the true darkness and fear of that time in Hungary's history and in my parent's eyes.

Richly imaginative and relentlessly humane
By John A. Sarkett
Dobozy has the gift. A master storyteller, a Beethoven (or better put, Bartok?) of the short form, if you will, displaying both power and restraint. Evocative and spellbinding stories of war, horror, family, and relationships that are evocative and spellbinding -- and always humane. The ending of the last story in the collection is the foremost of many revelations along the way. Highly recommended.

In this book, authors Tenko Raykov and George A. Marcoulides introduce students to the basics of structural equation modeling (SEM) through a conceptual, nonmathematical approach. For ease of understanding, the few mathematical formulas presented are used in a conceptual or illustrative nature, rather than a computational one.

Featuring examples from EQS, LISREL, and Mplus, A First Course in Structural Equation Modeling is an excellent beginner’s guide to learning how to set up input files to fit the most commonly used types of structural equation models with these programs. The basic ideas and methods for conducting SEM are independent of any particular software.

Highlights of the Second Edition include:

• Review of latent change (growth) analysis models at an introductory level

• Coverage of the popular Mplus program

• Updated examples of LISREL and EQS

• A CD that contains all of the text’s LISREL, EQS, and Mplus examples.

A First Course in Structural Equation Modeling is intended as an introductory book for students and researchers in psychology, education, business, medicine, and other applied social, behavioral, and health sciences with limited or no previous exposure to SEM. A prerequisite of basic statistics through regression analysis is recommended. The book frequently draws parallels between SEM and regression, making this prior knowledge helpful.

Very good for knowing the basics of SEM software
By Meng U. Taing
This book does a good job of explaining the basic concepts involved in SEM, path analysis, and CFA in easy to understand terms. Also, it lays out syntax and output for running popular SEM programs, such as LISREL, EQS, and Mplus. This book is perfect for the person who is trying to learn SEM on their own. I think it gives you enough to be able to know how to run a SEM, but it isn't enough to really make you a pro at it.

good guide

easy to understand and follow. only book i've seen that describes using MPlus software. Wish authors would write a Second Course in SEM and use more complex, realistic examples.

Mixed Medicines: Health and Culture in French Colonial Cambodia, by Sokhieng Au

During the first half of the twentieth century, representatives of the French colonial health services actively strove to expand the practice of Western medicine in the frontier colony of Cambodia. But as the French physicians ventured beyond their colonial enclaves, they found themselves negotiating with the plurality of Cambodian cultural practices relating to health and disease. These negotiations were marked by some success, a great deal of misunderstanding, and much failure.

Bringing together colorful historical vignettes, social and anthropological theory, and quantitative analyses, Mixed Medicines examines these interactions between the Khmer, Cham, and Vietnamese of Cambodia and the French, documenting the differences in their understandings of medicine and revealing the unexpected transformations that occurred during this period—for both the French and the indigenous population.

Review
“Mixed Medicines is just the sort of book that the field of colonial medicine has been clamoring for. It offers much more than a study of the imposition of French colonial medicine on the Khmer people of Cambodia; it shows us why people ‘mix’ health care practices in ways that make sense to them but baffle others. This brilliant book will inform scholars and policymakers alike.”

(Ken Alder, Northwestern University)

“Mixed Medicines is the first book ever written by a historian entirely focusing on medicine in colonial Cambodia. The exhaustive analysis of the archives in both France and Cambodia provides a unique insight into the various medical practices undertaken by the French protectorate. Sokhieng Au’s theoretical position moves beyond traditional academic research on colonialism by showing what is really colonial about public health policies enacted by those in power, as well as by drawing attention to the cultural and political processes, which were not always colonial, that separated individual freedom from coercion.”

(Anne Yvonne Guillou, Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique)

“Skillfully crafted and strongly argued, Mixed Medicines intervenes forcefully in multiple fields of scholarship. It provides a strikingly original and exhaustively researched history of the social, cultural, and institutional history of medicine in colonial Cambodia and offers a learned critique of conventional academic theories of globalization and cultural change. Southeast Asianists, medical anthropologists, and historians of science will find copious food for thought in this rich and elegant book.”

(Peter Zinoman, University of California, Berkeley)

“A fascinating account of two very different cultures and their often clashing approaches to medicine and health care. Au provides insights into the social and cultural history of Cambodia and Southeast Asia that no previous book has offered us before.”

(Thongchai Winichakul, University of Wisconsin–Madison)

“Scholars will appreciate the intricacy of Au’s theoretical claims. Recommended.” (E. J. Peters Choice)

Public Health's Growing Pains
By DBishai
The best reason to read this book is to establish a benchmark for cultural misunderstanding in public health. France's colonization of Cambodia from 1863 to 1953 overlaps with the scientific flowering of biomedicine. The first French physicians to arrive in Cambodia possessed a Western medical tradition that was not objectively superior to indigenous traditions of Southeast Asia.

Imperialist approaches to public health are seldom impeded by humility. As Au's book points out the French wrought havoc introducing poorly constructed cholera vaccines and plague laboratories to the Cambodian people. Au is able to recapture some of the arrogance of the imperialist medical corps, and soft pedals the irony of the terrible violations of the Hippocratic oath that ensued from the conceit that Western medical practices of that era were superior to anything indigenous.

This is a great contribution to the history of public health. We have very few in depth descriptions of how the sanitary revolution spread to European colonies. Given that current international public health practitioners continue to face the same issues as the French Medical Corps the book has continued relevance to the field of public health. The advantage of Au's treatment is that the time and place "seems" so far removed from the present that readers may feel more free to be critical of the Western do-gooders. Once that critical stance is achieved it is an easy step to see that plus ça change, plus c'est la même chose.

The Pope's Rhinoceros, by Lawrence Norfolk

The Pope's Rhinoceros is a vivid, antic, and picaresque novel spun around one of history's most bizarre chapters: the sixteenth-century attempt to procure a rhinoceros as a bribe for Pope Leo X. In February 1516, a Portuguese ship sank off the coast of Italy. The Nostra Senora de Ajuda had sailed fourteen thousand miles from the Indian kingdom of Gujarat. Her mission: to bribe the "pleasure-loving Pope" into favoring expansionist Portugal over her rival Spain with the most exotic and least likely of gifts -- a living rhinoceros. Moving from the herring colonies of the Baltic Sea to the West African rain forest, with a cast of characters including an order of reclusive monks and Rome's corrupt cardinals, courtesans, ambassadors, and nobles, The Pope's Rhinoceros is at once a fantastic adventure tale and a portrait of an age rushing headlong to its crisis.

Amazon.com Review
In the tradition of Gabriel Garcia Marquez and Umberto Eco, Lawrence Norfolk has created a dizzyingly dense and impressively erudite fantasy of a novel, a vast edifice based around a single, actual historical event: the sinking off the coast of Italy of a Portugese ship bound on a bizarre mission, to deliver an African rhino to Pope Leo X. Norfolk takes his readers on a world tour of the 16th century, from the flophouses of Rome to the rain forest of West Africa, and along the way he piles historical esoterica upon philosophical rumination upon myriad subplots and minor characters. The chains of event and coincidence and the encyclopedic references will exhaust some readers long before the mad quest for the rhino meets its watery end, but Norfolk's baroque talent remains inexhaustible.

From Publishers Weekly
Set in the 16th century, Norfolk's epic second novel takes its premise from an actual event: an unsuccessful Portuguese attempt to bring a rhinoceros to Rome by ship, in order to curry political favor with Pope Leo X. But historical fact is no more than a springboard for Norfolk's extremely (perhaps excessively) elaborate and occasionally mythic fictional construction. At the novel's center is Salvestro, a somewhat reluctant soldier of fortune who becomes a steadfast companion to Bernardo, a dim-witted hulk with fearsome physical strength. After they have been used as pawns in a maze of machinations and deceptions within the Italian military, the pair escape back to Salvestro's Baltic home town; but soon afterward, they return to Italy as guides for a group of beleaguered monks. In Rome, Salvestro and Bernardo become mixed up in the attempt to procure the exotic rhinoceros, undertaking a perilous sea voyage that deposits them on an equally perilous African coast. While some may enjoy Norfolk's whirligig of deceptions and double crosses, less patient readers will find the narrative frustrating. Norfolk indulges a penchant for withholding information, and his vaguely delineated, staggeringly complex plot twists involve a huge cast of characters. As he proved in the intellectually heavyweight Lempriere's Dictionary, he's clearly a virtuoso stylist. But in the end, this novel, more a tour de force of technical mastery than a compelling narrative, impresses more than it entertains.

From Library Journal
Pope Leo X was one of the most power-hungry and profligate political figures of the Renaissance. Raised in the lavish Medici court, he was a difficult person to impress. Expansionist Portugal hoped to win Leo's favor by presenting him with a rhinoceros, a creature about as exotic as a unicorn in 16th-century Italy. Norfolk's second historical novel, following the critically acclaimed Lempriere's Dictionary (LJ 6/15/92), focuses on the adventures of Salvestro and Bernardo, two clueless treasure hunters who get caught up in the rhino quest. There are scores of minor characters, including Fiametta, an obscenely obese prostitute; Towser the Executioner; a Vatican housecat; and the virgin Amalia, whose white dress is impervious to Roman dirt. Pychonesque anachronisms abound: the Roman countryside is an "ectopia," and music at papal celebrations is provided by the proto-punk band King Caspar and the Mauritians. Despite its postmodern trappings, this is essentially an old-fashioned and aimless picaresque novel. For larger fiction collections.?Edward B. St. John, Loyola Law Sch., Los Angeles

Read This Book To Make Yoursef A Better Person
By True Power
To learn. To make money. To be aware of obligations, like taxes and contracts. To be entertained. To better understand things, like politics, history, and religion. To expand vocabulary. To become a better conversationalist and speaker. To travel. To be in a different time and place. To experience emotions and adventure. To explore. To discover. To simply provoke thought. To get ideas. To satisfy curiosity. To lead a better life. These are a few of the reasons we read. The Pope's Rhinoceros will satisfy these desires, and more.

The saddest things about my personal experience with this historical novel are how and why I discovered it. It was a library discard in excellent condition, purchased for 25 cents because of poor circulation. The best thing is that I did discover it.

The most joyful experience: I benefit from the discovery, like purchasing a Rembrandt at a garage sale. Having read it, I'll selectively pass it along to others with a passion for quality and learning.

Raised with C.S. Forester, nourished by Patrick O'Brian, I was delighted to find a bit of 16th century sailing ship adventure.

As a student of history, I checked "facts" from other resources. There really was an attempt to present the gift of a rhinoceros to Pope Leo early in the sixteenth century. It really had been over 1500 years since a rhinoceros had been seen in Europe, courtesy of the power of the Roman Empire. Why? Did civilization decline? Might it again? Is it doing so now?

Keep a dictionary handy while you read this work. Although not doing so will not diminish your progress nor enjoyment, this book offers an enormous opportunity to expand your historical, geographical, and foreign terms vocabulary. It will simultaneously increase your admiration for the relatively young author, Lawrence Norfolk.

Get a copy. Put it on the night stand or headboard shelf. Read at your own pace. Discuss it with your family and friends when opportunity avails.

You will travel in time and place. You will become cold and you will be warmed. You will witness starvation and gluttony, feel fear and elation, cruelty and kindness, greed and sacrifice. You will meet beggars, thieves, bums, sluts, charlatans, crooks, connivers, slaves, overseers, murderers, impoverished, drunkards, defeated, deceitful, indigent, indignant, and indigenous. You will meet persons who are faithful, loyal, saintly, spiritual, psychic, blind who see or do not, pirates, sailors, soldiers, captains, overseers, royalty, monks, priests, cardinals, a pope, poets, innkeepers, and many more. You will do so in Europe, Africa, and India. You will be in the dawning decades of the sixteenth century.

You will enjoy the experience immensely. You will have done a good thing. You will be better for it. Exercise builds the body. I sincerely recommend this book as a worthwile endeavour. It will build the mind.

The Pope's Rhinoceros...
By M. Tehrani
I started reading Lawrence Norfolk's second Novel on a flight from London to Houston in early April 2004. I finished it on July 18. The last book that took me as long to read was Salman Rushdie's "The Satanic Verses". Both books are fascinating, but at times immensely tedious. I intend to read both again after I retire!
I found the style of the book descriptive in the extreme. This worked in some instances, like the description of the rainforest somewhere in Goa?/Africa?, but often was at the expense of good story telling and a cohesive narative. The reader is very likely to lose sense of times, places, events and characters as some of the naration is actually a parade of memories taking place inside some character's mind. As a result, the reader might read a whole chapter without having any sense of time, place, event, etc.
As has been said by others, the ending was rushed and was in no way in proportion to the less improtant but extremely verbose descriptions given elsewhere.
Some of the likeable characters were treated unsympathetically. For example, can someone tell me what happened to Bernardo whose fortunes we followed in detail most of the way, but who suddenly disappeared without any fuss.

Absolute Brilliance!
By Eric Fick
Lawrence Norfolk is one of the only modern masters of language and storytelling we have, and I believe that we should not only appreciate it but praise it as well. As with his first novel "Lepmpriere's Dictionary", which was a story of strange twisting plots and a great reservoir for historical mystery, "The Pope's Rhinoceros" is only the best book to follow. It of course has its strange tangents that we, as an audience, are learning to be the style of the great author, and minor plots that boggle the mind even after the last page has been read. There are things too reminiscent of Lempriere's such as the character of Septimus whom we are so intrigued by but so uninformed about, we get a new view on this angelic character and only find that we are closer to understanding without even a new hint as to what it means. His, Norfolk's, ability to write so detailed on certain things as the way of life of a fish in the sea, a colony of rats, or the history of a river or strange occurrences on remote islands, is impeccable. To achieve through writing alone, an enchantment that will devour your reader, without even the elements of a story is not an easy task and yet Norfolk produces it in the blink of an eye, and makes it appear all too natural. I think anyone would terribly enjoy this book, and those who would not are just those who become aggrivated when a piece of work forces them to think a little. The only negative of the book that I can even fathom is that he has so few books under his belt that when you finish Lempriere's and the Pope's who will be left waiting impatienly, clawing at and climbing the walls, for his next work to be published.

The Years of Talking Dangerously, by Geoffrey Nunberg

“There has never been,” Nunberg writes, “an age as wary as ours of the tricks words can play, obscuring distinctions and smoothing over the corrugations of the actual world.... Yet as advertisers and marketers know, our mistrust of words doesn’t inoculate us against them.” These are the years of talking dangerously, and Nunberg is a sure guide to the pitfalls. With illuminating intelligence and devastating humor, Nunberg decodes the changing syntax of Time Magazine, explains why grammar buffs are drawn to sarcasm, and deftly unpacks the telling phrases of our national conversation, from progressive to elite to change—not to mention national conversation itself.

“Full of fun little moments that should delight language mavens…. It’s the kind of book that you read, absorb, and then think about for a while afterward.”

“[B]y paying attention to the changing nature of our common language, Nunberg has made it possible for us to feel less imprisoned by the idioms of the day, and perhaps more capable of creating (or at least laughing at) the idioms of tomorrow.”

Nunberg offers witty and insightful reflections on the idiosyncrasies of the English language.

The Years of Talking Dangerously
Review by Richard L. Weaver II, Ph.D.

In just over 50 vignettes on language and 265 pages, Nunberg offers witty and insightful reflections on the idiosyncrasies of the English language. More than anything else, he offers an "inside" (linguists') look at the closing years of the Bush administration which, with respect to word usage, offered a plethora of examples to examine. It was--just as his presidency was--perhaps, the worst case of any president in history; thus, Nunberg had a great deal of information with which to work. Nunberg's commentaries on language and politics appeared regularly on NPRs "Fresh Air," in the Sunday New York Times, and in a variety of other newspapers across the country.

In each of the vignettes throughout the book, the original location of the short essay is mentioned, whether it be a "Fresh Air Commentary" or a newspaper. Nunberg's insights offer an interesting--and sometimes provocative--insight into the culture of the Bush administration.

For me, his commentaries bring back a time that is easily and happily forgotten and along with it, the failed policies and ideas that not just reflect on a failed administration, but an administration, too, whose policies and corrupt practices (to the extent of deleting or altering scientific reports that opposed administration philosophies) that brought our society (and the world) to near total collapse. These are not pleasant memories. Just two examples were how Bush and Karl Rove used the phrase "people of faith," or how the word "values" became the property of the right.

More, please

As Nunberg's biggest (only?) UK fan, I'm using this to bump up his ratings. Well, not exactly. When his latest gets one bland (machine-generated?) 5 star review and one appreciative review that gives it a meagre 3, I feel the fella ain't getting his due. You've got a national treasure there, guys - listen up! Plus he's very, very funny.

A Fun And Interesting Read
By Thomas J. Hoehler
Fun to read, difficult to put down. I enjoyed the author's obvious careful research into the phrases we have seen become popular. Our speech has certainly become different from that of our parents, and their parents. We tend to be more vulgar, coarse and less concerned with hurtful remarks. Having said that, it is an interesting read, it sticks to the middle of the road politically, never favoring one political party over another. Recommended.

Bomber's Law, by George V. Higgins

A winding tale of suspicion and intrigue, George V. Higgins skillfully recounts the story of elusive Short Joey Mossi.

When detective sergeant Harry Dell’Appa went into enforced exile in the Berkshires to put an end to an ill-fated office romance, he didn’t expect to be called back to Boston so soon. But desperate times…so the saying goes, and head detective Brian Dennison is keen for Short Joey Mossi, a suspected mob exterminator, to be arrested once and for all. Dell’Appa is called in to assist detective Bob Brennan, an old rival of his, who despite knowing all there is to know about Mossi, has never apprehended him. The plot thickens and Dell’Appa learns time and time again of the primacy of Bomber’s Law: they always “do it for the money”.

In Bomber’s Law, Higgins operates on a captivating policy of “partial disclosure”, leaving the reader to piece together the plot, morsel by morsel.

From Publishers Weekly
"We did it for the money" is retired lawman Bomber Lawrence's explanation for any piece of bad behavior, and Higgins's latest feast of dialogue (after Defending Billy Ryan ) often illustrates Bomber's Law. Recalled to Boston after a 12-month exile in the Massachusetts sticks, sergeant Harry Dell'Appa replaces Bob Brennan on a stakeout of Short Joey Mossi, a reputed mob hit man on whom the police have as yet been unable to pin anything. Going through Brennan's file on Mossi, Dell'Appa finds it suspiciously light; longstanding mutual dislike between the two cops makes it easy for Harry to believe there's something fishy going on. The reason for their antagonism and the results of Dell'Appa's suspicions are revealed in Higgins's preferred style, which favors dialogue--or rather, monologues--over narrative descriptions. The simple, precise plot constantly gets lost in the author's urge to reproduce the exact cadences of his characters' speech; individual sentences are accurate, realistic and very well written, but the endless digressions and stories within the story are rambling and undramatic, especially when compared to the dialogue that is directly plot-motivated. Still, with an author who uses monologues like arias to create atmosphere and character, plot naturally takes second place. Perhaps that's Higgins's Law: He did it for the dialogue. BOMC selection.

From Library Journal
The hero of Higgins's 23rd mystery novel is Detective Sgt. Harry Dell'Appa, a sensitive investigator in his thirties who has returned to his Boston headquarters on special assignment after an enforced exile in the Berkshires designed to call a halt to his ill-fated office romance. Almost entirely through dialog, the reader comes to loathe Harry's partner, who's been tailing a hired mob killer for years with no apparent results. In a dramatic finale, we learn the reasons for Harry's puzzling inertia. Higgins comes through again with the subtle characterization and humor we expect; one wants to reread the book to savor the clues scattered here and there. Sure to satisfy the legions of Higgins fans and win new converts. BOMC main selection.

Remember diagramming sentences? A pedantic exercise, but one that taught us a lot about what goes into a sentence. If you were to diagram a conversation in this latest George Higgins' novel, you would learn a lot, too. Mostly, you'd see that when two of Higgins' people talk, they rarely stick to the subject--or that the subject isn't always what it seems to be. Gleaning information in Higgins' world is like gleaning information in life: nobody tells you the point straight out; you piece it together slowly, often learning more from the tangents a speaker follows than from any direct answers he or she might give. Take the matter of Short Joey Mossi, a gangster whom Boston cop Bob Brennan has been tailing for years. We learn through conversations between Brennan and his successor on the tail, Harry Dell'Appa, and between Harry and his boss, Brian Dennison, that all is not kosher with this investigation. Moreover, though, we learn about Harry's marriage, about the bad blood between Harry and Bob, about the nightmare of a house Brian is stuck with, and even about Short Joey's early career as a fighter. We change our minds several times about which characters we like and which we don't like, and in the end, we don't so much like or not like any of them as we come to accept that their actions are driven by a kind of sad inevitability. Bomber Lawrence, Brian's former boss, called it Bomber's Law: we do it for the money. That's a simple enough sentence, easy to diagram, but it doesn't really mean much until you add the subclauses and the interjections. Maybe that's the point of diagramming sentences and of reading Higgins: there's more to life than a subject and a verb. Bill Ott

George V. Higgins at his best!
By A Customer
George V. Higgins has earned his place as the Balzac of Boston, describing through the use of dialogue various low-level crooks, pols, lawyers, and other low life. No one can top him for a sense of the language, nor for the desperation in his characters. He really sets the pace in this genre. Bomber's Law is as good as it comes.

Drowning in chatter
By Donald Kahn
Maybe it's me. I thought The Friends of Eddie Coyle was a masterly novel, but twenty years later, this one drove me nuts. The long conversations are utterly unlifelike. I have never in my life heard conversations like these. And the windup is not worth the effort to get through to it.

A mess of gobbledy-gook
By Old Hawkeye
I don't care how many people tell me how great the writing of Higgins is, the plot here is paper thin and although his style is unique with the story unfolding through dialogue rather than narrative this is a mess. The few dramatic moments are peppered with the characters digressing about dogs that roll in stinky stuff and their wives going out to buy coffins. Yeah its supposed to be metaphorical, any fool know dat, but don't take my word for it. Here is one sentence from the book. "But Dell'Appa, his anger at Brennan now having receded sufficiently to permit him to think rationally about matters other (and more complex) than bashing Brennan in the teeth; having instantly perceived that this man, his short black hair graying at the temples under the White Sox black-wool cap shielding his happy face, was too white and too old ever to have been prudently allowed, "pastly, presently, or futurely" (as Dennison liked to say when split-infinitively-importuned "to just at least think, Okay?" about a transparently-stupid, cockeyed course of action he had quite rightly just summarily rejected--by saying: "not a chance"---and would never authorize, "unless first overtaken by a fit"), by anyone who loved him to risk having any mood like that in a public place, now gradually and belatedly realized that the man was too flat-out handicapped as well."
That's ONE sentence folks.

First published in 2004, and now with a new introduction by the author and a foreword by Robert F. Kennedy Jr., this book of natural history, environmentalism, and politics explores one of the Earth's last primeval places: Clayoquot Sound. Pitt-Brooke takes the reader on 12 journeys, one for each month of the year. Each journey covers the outstanding natural event of that season, such as whale-watching in April, shorebird migration in May, and the salmon spawn in October.

From Publishers Weekly
What Canadian naturalist Pitt-Brooke chases in this paean to Clayoquot Sound, a still pristine patch of Vancouver Island's west coast, is hope—hope that the environmental diversity of that short stretch of natural paradise will survive population pressure, industrial encroachment and logging devastation. In a dozen poetic year-in-the-life chapters, Pitt-Brooke savors nature with Thoreauvian gusto. In January, he seeks out batten-down-the-hatches winter winds. Come April, he's out to sea, eye-to-eye with cavorting whales as they migrate north. June is for walking the intertidal zone, where mollusks and other briny beings thrive and die in the few feet where ocean washes over land; October is for hiking mountain streams, where salmon come home to spawn and black bears come to feed on them. At the close of the year, Pitt-Brooke's quest moves from exuberant physical experience to spiritual and historical reflection, as he searches for signs of ancient human presence on the land and distills the accounts of the European explorers who a scant two centuries ago wrested the land from its original inhabitants. Though the book's emotional focus is on one singular geographical location, it's a clarion call for the preservation of all wild places. (May)

Naturalist Pitt-Brooke takes his readers on 12 excursions to Clayoquot Sound in Vancouver Island, a place that receives precipitation 202 days of the year, averaging 3.3 meters annually. By kayak, helicopter, and on foot, he explores the rocky shoreline and its inhabitants. Proceeding month by month, he describes, for example, the spawning of schools of herring in March; then, in April, he chronicles how the entire eastern Pacific population of California gray whales migrates the length of North America's Pacific coast. In May "shorebirds appear by the tens of thousands, spend a few nights and move on." In June Pitt-Brooke visits the intertidal zone and reveals that anemones can live up to 100 years. The calendar year concludes with a concentrated history of west coast Vancouver Island, beginning with Don Juan Perez in 1774 and ending with 2001, when Clayoquot Sound is designated a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve. Pitt-Brooke's study of a beautiful landscape is quiet and engaging throughout, and meant to be relished slowly. Rebecca Maksel

A modern wilderness journey
By WestCoastBlue
This book is an initiation into one of the most beautiful and mysterious places on the planet. For every month of the year the author takes a journey into the forest and ocean wildernesses of Clayoquot Sound, exploring the main events of the yearly natural cycle---storms in January, herring spawning in March, salmon spawning in October, etc.---as well as the relationships between people and nature in Clayoquot Sound, both past and present. The natural history dominates, though, and the human history, though long and resulting in some deep and lasting environmental impacts, seems fleeting and insignificant when viewed against the backdrop of glacier-formed mountains and ancient forests.
I was impressed by how seamlessly the author combined scientific information with personal observations and the narrative of his travels. I felt the relentlessness of the winter rains, the hallowed beauty of wild creeks flowing through old growth, the salty sea air, and even the mosquito bites. The writing is graceful, rich, entertaining---every bit as varied and interesting as the place it describes. I can see this book standing up to multiple readings, with new nuances being discovered each time. ?Chasing Clayoquot? ought to be required reading for anyone planning a trip to Clayoquot Sound, and it makes for good armchair adventuring too. Don?t forget to pack your rain gear!

a beautiful and fascinating book
By C. Hill
This book is a 12-month exploration of the area around Clayoquot Sound, on Vancouver Island's west coast. Through ventures to various spots in the area, the author tells us of history, geography, wildlife, and more. He talks about the isolated life of the Lennard Island lighthouse keeper, how the coastline was shaped by glaciers, why Pacific waves are so big, how various fur traders and explorers came and went through the years, life in the town of Tofino, and how ongoing logging has created vast swaths of naked hillsides. This book has something for everybody. Part natural history, part human history, part modern day life on the coast, this is a fascinating read and a beautiful description of a lovely and scenic place. I especially recommend reading this if you plan on visiting the area.
