The Quest for Japan's New Constitution: An Analysis of Visions and Constitutional Reform Proposals 1980-2009 (Routledge Contemporary Japan

This book examines the many attempts over the last three decades to revise Japan’s constitution. As the book shows, these attempts at revision have been relatively conservative, aiming to embed in the constitution visions of a different future for Japan. Specific reforms advocated include: enabling Japan to have a more proactive foreign policy, more independent of the US-Japan alliance; strengthening the role of the Emperor, and excluding female succession to the throne; and emphasising more citizens’ duties, rather than their rights, in order to strengthen community and societal cohesion.

By far the most comprehensive analysis of constitutional reform debate in Japan to be published to date, it offers translations and analysis of more than two dozen amendment proposals. The book provides a comprehensive analysis of the details of the reform proposals, charts the so far unsuccessful attempts to bring about the reforms, discusses the different groups arguing for reform, and assesses the nature of the proposed reforms. It categorises different versions of the vision for Japan’s future and shows that only a few campaigners are advocating anything like a return to Japan’s pre-war constitution.

The Quest for Japan's New Constitution
By Juha M. Saunavaara
This book gives more than what its title promises. Namely, "The Quest for Japan's New Constitution" is not only a study of constitutional reform proposals, but a detailed description of Japan's postwar conservatism. Especially Chapter 1 is a must reading for anyone interested in Japanese conservatism, or conservatism in general. The chapter begins with the introduction of the thoughts of Mannheim and Burke and skilfully leads the reader's way to the, often paradoxical, setting of circumstances in which the political conservatism has taken forms. The paradox derives from a question, whether the system one considers worth conserving or restoring is it the existing postwar system, i.e. an entirely new system forced upon Japan by the American occupiers, or is it the prewar system that the occupiers destroyed and replaced.

The second chapter familiarizes the reader with three issues through which the constitutional drafts are approached. These issues are: the Emperor system and the question of imperial succession, visions for a new national security policy, and the questions concerning peoples' rights and duties. All of the forementioned are connected to the conservatives' concern over the spiritual decline of Japan during the postwar period.

Chapter 3 introduces the constitutional drafts written between 1980 and 2009. This is followed by an in-depth analysis in Chapter 4. The third chapter contains the translations of preambles and the equivalents to the current Articles 1, 2, 9, 11, 12, 13, 24, 97, and 98 Paragraph 2 of the selected 27 drafts. Some readers may found these these translations a bid less captivating than the rest of the book, but, at least according to my understanding, they are a unique source for those who cannot read the original reform drafts in Japanese. The last chapter (the analysis of the drafts) is understandable even if one does not have time or energy to familiarize oneself in detail with these translations. One of the most interesting parts of the last chapter deals with the differences and similarities between the drafts of the last decades and those written in the 1950s and the 1960s.

Christian Winkler's argumentation is clear through the whole book and he has mastered the skill of writing concise and analytical text. There are authors who could easily use double the page Mr. Winkler has used, but conclude much less.

I would like to recommend this book as an excellent purchase (despite its hefty prize) for those interested in constitutional reform or postwar conservatism.

Content is excellent; production is flawed
By GroundChuck
Classic G.I. Joe Volume 7 contains some of the most fondly-remembered stories from the original Marvel run, including the ascension of Fred VII as the second Cobra Commander and the classic Borovian gulag storyline (which I seem to recall being much longer, but this is probably because there wasn't a thirty-day wait in between chapters this time around). Even the lesser stories, such as the Joes' mission into space and the introduction of Battleforce 2000 are written incredibly well. (The content would warrant five stars based simply on Roadblock's classic line to a would-be flagburner in the Sierra Gordan embassy: "No one ever died for a typewriter.")

Unfortunately, IDW has dropped the ball to an extent. The cover mentions that all the issues have been re-colored, which is fine. What is not fine is that they also have been re-lettered, or, at least, had the lettering touched up. It would appear that whoever actually handled the re-lettering/touching up wasn't reading the issues, and has no grasp of the English language. "Typos" are rampant, often so distracting that I had to actually stop and think about what a character would most logically be saying in a panel in order to figure out what was going on. Some pages have as many as a half-dozen serious errors. (Generally, I'm forgiving of typos, but these are really bad; in some cases, multiple letters within a single word were switched with what seemed like random letter B's.) Only the original letterer and editor, Joe Rosen and Bob Harras, appear in the credits, and this makes them both look bad; however, having most of these issues in their original form, I know the errors are unique to the collected edition. Hopefully future Joe collections won't have this problem.

Also, although a minor quibble, the first five volumes feature original artwork that reflects the contents. Starting with Volume 6, IDW began re-using single issue covers from the Devil's Due series, which takes place almost a decade after the Marvel series and often features characters in totally different costumes from what they wear in the interior issues. Volume 6 wasn't especially bad, having a somewhat generic team shot for the cover. With this volume, though, we see Billy as an adult, Storm Shadow as a Cobra, and Kamakura, who wouldn't even debut for almost fifteen years! Just an odd choice all-around, and it seems like another, more generic image might've been more suitable.

I'd wholeheartedly recommend this volume in spite of the production issues, though I would certainly hope the misspellings are corrected in future printings.

Great writing, mediocre art, poor reproduction
By Kid Kyoto
Let's start with the typos, because the book is littered with them. They start on page 1 and continue through the book. Artist Marshall Rogers becomes Marshall ROSERS. A few pages later we read that "The structure was built during the ultra-paranoid GOLD war fifties. Very solid. Bunker LAKE."

Sigh.

It's easy to see what happened, the scanning software confused certain letters, E became S, C became G etc. But it's also obvious that if anyone had looked at the PDFs before printing they would have caught and corrected the numerous, numerous problems. The fact that IDW published something with such embarrassing mistakes makes me less inclined to buy anything from them in the future.

The art is also problematic. With hundreds of characters and vehicles to keep straight and on model for Hasbro GI Joe never really attracted top artists even when it was a top-selling book. Artists change frequently and none of them stand out as particularly good. Because characters often wear their action figure costumes they can look out of place. Who really wears a white snow suit on a stealth mission?

But the stories, that's the real selling point. Larry Hama, an army vet and military fanatic took a collection of plastic action figures and breathed life into them. Besides staple characters like Snake-Eyes and Stalker he manages to make even bizarre characters like Raptor (the Cobra falconry expert) come to life. To fans of the cartoon or the movie this book will be a real change of pace, we have 3 Joes held prisoner in a Soviet-era gulag, other Joes get involved in a dirty war in Central America or a civil war in Europe. All the while entertaining chases and epic battles rage.

If the reproduction had gotten any proofreading I would give this an additional star, I hope the 2nd printing will fix this problem.

pretty good
By Shannon Green
I thought this book had really good bones but it was kind of bland. The main character calls her ex for help when she has someone trying to kill her. He drops everything and rushes to help her. Sounds great there just wasnt a connection between the characters and the reader. The only one I liked was Jack. So, I would say it was pretty good but I wouldnt read it twice.

action-packed thriller
By Harriet Klausner
Kate Mahaffey asks her ex husband CIA field agent Jackson Prime to come to Tralee as she needs his help. He translates that to mean she fears for her life. Still in love with Kate and knowing how calm she is in a crisis, Jackson takes her plea seriously and obtains time off from the agency during a case; he rushes back to keep Kate safe as he is very concerned about her.

Jackson learns some people are chasing after Kate though neither she nor he knows why. The only person in her circle, who might want to harm her, is her former brother-in-law, a nasty abuser. He also needs to know why she abruptly filed for divorce almost two years ago while he was in the field when he thought they were happily married for eight years. He hopes to have answers soon while keeping his beloved safe.

THE PRIME OBJECTIVE is an action-packed thriller starring two likable lead protagonists who confront external danger while having issues to resolve between them as they remain in love. The storyline is fast-paced from the moment Jack tells his handler Annie he is coming in from the cold to protect his ex and never slows down on either the suspense or romance fronts as Ginna Gray entertains sub-genre fans.

Classic volume 2 is a must for fans
By yenrab
Volume 2 is a collection of the Marvel comic issues 11-20 from May 1983 - February 1984. This volume is very beautiful with great, bold colors on each page.
These 10 comics introduce the following characters: Airborne, Doc, Gung-Ho, Snow Job, Wild Bill, Destro, Ace, Major Bludd, Cover Girl, and Tripwire (yes, there could be others I missed). Kwinn is a major character in these comics starting with issue 11 but he was introduced in the 2nd issue in Volume 1. (A small tidbit about Kwinn; he was released as an action figure in 2004, some 22 years after his first appearance in the comic series in 1982) Several love interests are hinted at as well - Scarlett/Snake Eyes Baroness/Destro. Larry Hamma was the scripter on issues 11-19 in this Volume.
Overall I see no errors or missing pages. If you grew up in the 80s like me and want to reconnect with the comics, then check out this volume. I have the original comics and so this is a great way to read them without messing up the originals.
Keep in mind to those that may think these collect newer comics; they are not. These comics are 26 years old and this volume brings them back to life beautifully.

Where GIJoe really started hitting its stride
By GroundChuck
I'm not sure why the description lists this volume as introducing Duke, Roadblock, Zartan, and Storm Shadow, all of whom first appear in Volume 3, but that hardly makes this any less worth reading. GIJoe shifts here from being a series of more or less stand-alone missions to an ongoing narrative, with a great deal of intrigue going on behind the scenes within Cobra High Command (especially with the introduction of Destro, Major Bludd, and Scarface). Some details are a bit dated, but, overall, the stories in this volume have held up remarkably well in the almost thirty years since they were first published.

Collects Issues #11-20 of the late 1980s Marvel Comics series
By K. W. Schreiter
This full-color IDW 240-page trade paperback reprints the second ten issues of the 1980s Marvel Comics "G.I. Joe: A Real American Hero" series with original cover dates of May 1983 to February 1984. Most issues were written by Larry Hama with penciling by Mike Vosberg and inks by Jon Agostino. G.I. Joe is an elite US counterterrorism strike force that are secretly headquartered beneath an army chaplain's motor pool and locked in a struggle against the stateless terrorist organization Cobra.
Several new Joes appear in #11, including Airborne, Doc, Gung Ho, Snow Job and Wild Bill. Ace and Cover Girl also join the team in this run. Destro makes his first full appearance in #14: he is both right-hand-man and rival to Cobra Commander and love interest of the Baroness. Dr. Venom, Major Bludd and Scarface also feature heavily in this run. The Joe team battles Cobra plots from the Alaskan tundra to the fictional banana republic of Sierra Gordo to the National Mall in Washington, D.C. Kwinn returns and forms a vengeful alliance with Snake Eyes in pursuit of the ruthless Dr. Venom. The action climaxes with a Cobra attack on G.I. Joe headquarters and several key deaths at the end of #19. #20 is a fill-in issue showing Clutch on a furlough.
All ten covers are included, and IDW did not remove all "Marvel Comics" references as they had for Volume 1. The TPB credits indicate that IDW has recolored the original artwork. This series ultimately lasted for 155 issues, and IDW will release further reprint collections in 2009, as well as a new G.I. Joe comic book series that disregards the previous continuity.

Very pleased with this book for homeschooling
By bluebell
This book rocks. In our homeschool, my son and I were completing a unit study of the human body and I needed a thorough resource book to help guide our studies. I was hesitant at first to get this book because I worried that the word "encyclopedia" in the title meant that the book was both too advanced and boring. Not so on either account!

It's called an encyclopedia because it's chock full of information about every system of the human body- 256 pages worth! But, the information is presented in such a visual, kid-friendly way that it's not at all like an old-fashioned encyclopedia. Also unlike the typical encyclopedia, the information isn't presented alphabetically, but in topical sections. We read through the sections page by page and soaked up the fascinating knowledge.

Of course, "typical" information about the human body is presented - things like the skeletal system and the circulatory system. But, there's also a lot of less typical subject matter found within the chapters - like allergies, brain scans and personalities. This book is a wealth of information for the 3rd-8th grader! (Just so you know, the life cycle is covered - clearly, but very tastefully.)

The pictures and illustrations are amazing and went a long way in helping my son understand the concepts and enjoy the book. And, it's worth mentioning, that the hard cover edition is very sturdy for homeschooling purposes. I am ever-so-pleased with Human Body: A Visual Encyclopedia and am now on the hunt for more "visual encyclopedias" from DK to add to our collection!

So impressed
By Maddy's Mom
I homeschool my 8 yr and 3yr old boys. I bought this for our home library, thinking it would be like the smaller DK Eyewitness books, but it is a thick, heavy book, full of great pictures and information. Truly a "visual encyclopedia" as it states on the cover. I am very impressed. We also bought the Nat. Geographic Bug, Space and Animal Encyclopedias, and this is just as big and honestly, better with it's delivery. The Nat Geographic books are "all over the place" with their information and photos, not very organized.

Again, a great reference book to have in your library. My kids have this to use as they grow up. Highly recommended.

An afterthought version for Kindle
By Adeline Sire
I bought the Kindle Edition of this encyclopedia. It's clearly designed for the iPad, not the Kindle, and illustrations look like they're reframed and cut on the edges, you do not see the whole picture on the Kindle. This seems to have been designed as a print book and reworked --as an afterthought --for the iPad, but definitely not made for the Kindle. As far as content, it's pretty good, but I wish there had been more information about reproduction. Pop-ups are OK, but again, not a great Kindle product, possibly better on iPad and surely better as a print edition.

This textbook, designed for a single semester course, begins with basic set theory, and moves briskly through fundamental, exponential, and logarithmic functions. Limits and derivatives finish the preparation for economic applications, which are introduced in chapters on univariate functions, matrix algebra, and the constrained and unconstrained optimization of univariate and multivariate functions. The text finishes with chapters on integrals, the mathematics of finance, complex numbers, and differential and difference equations.

Rich in targeted examples and explanations, Mathematical Economics offers the utility of a handbook and the thorough treatment of a text. While the typical economics text is written for two semester applications, this text is focused on the essentials. Instructors and students are given the concepts in conjunction with specific examples and their solutions.

The Magic of Saida, by M.G. Vassanji

Giller Prize–winner M. G. Vassanji gives us a powerfully emotional novel of love and loss, of an African/Indian man who returns to the town of his birth in search of the girl he once loved—and the sense of self that has always eluded him.
Kamal Punja is a physician who has lived in Canada for the past forty years, but whom we first meet in a Tanzanian hospital. He is delirious and says he has been poisoned with hallucinogens. But when Kamal finds a curious and sympathetic ear in a local publisher, his ravings begin to reveal a tale of extraordinary pathos, complexity, and mystery.

Raised by his African mother, deserted when he was four by his Indian father, married to a woman of Indian heritage, and the father of two wholly Westernized children, Kamal had reached a stage of both undreamed-of material success and disintegrating personal ties. Then, suddenly, he “stepped off the treadmill, allowed an old regret to awaken,” and set off to find the girl he had known as a child, to finally keep his promise to her that he would return.

The girl was Saida, granddaughter of a great, beloved Swahili poet. Kamal and Saida were constant companions—he teaching her English and arithmetic, she teaching him Arabic script and Swahili poetry—and in his child’s mind, she was his future wife. Until, when he was eleven, his mother sent him to the capital, Dar es Salaam, to live with his father’s relatives, to “become an Indian” and thus secure his future. Now Kamal is journeying back to the village he left, into the maze of his long-unresolved mixed-race identity and the nightmarish legacy of his broken promise to Saida.

At once dramatic, searching, and intelligent, The Magic of Saida moves deftly between the past and present, painting both an intimate picture of passion and betrayal and a broad canvas of political promise and failure in contemporary Africa. It is a timeless story—and a story very much of our own time.

From Booklist
*Starred Review* Vassanji’s (The Assassin’s Song, 2007) remarkable new novel is a magic trick that reveals how it’s performed while in process. It has an old-fashioned, Conradian narrative construct: while recovering from malaria or madness, Kamal Punja, the befuddled protagonist, tells his story to Martin Kigoma, a publisher who may well be an unreliable narrator. And the story is complex. Kamal is a golo, or half-caste, the son of an Indian father and an African mother who was raised in Kilwa, a coastal backwater in colonial Tanzania. He escaped and found success as a doctor in Edmonton, Canada. What may or may not be an ordinary midlife crisis has brought him back to his origins, and led him to track down his first love, an African girl named Saida. As Kamal relates the colonial history—the successive waves of occupation, degradation, resistance, and modernization of his beloved Kilwa and its surroundings—Vassanji’s tactile, occasionally sentimental prose amounts to the best sort of historical fiction because the history is integral to the story. Once the trick is completed, the magic must be shown for what it is: tragedy. Vassanji has won Canada’s Giller Prize twice. This book also seems bound for glory. --Michael Autrey

Review
Amazon.ca - Best 100 Books of 2012

“The Magic of Saida is the sort of novel that, upon finishing, one wants to immediately read again, to examine, to study just how Vassanji works his narrative magic, and to allow oneself to savour it just that little bit longer. It’s simply baffling to me that such a book – that this book – appears on none of the major short lists this fall. It’s more than an oversight; it’s a crying shame.”
—The Globe & Mail

“A gripping narrative . . . . [Vassanji’s] material is so compelling that he needs little more than to adopt the role of a chronicler . . . . A humble village, in the imagination of this chronicler, becomes a vortex of varying belief systems and ways of life.”
—National Post

“M.G. Vassanji’s new novel offers an experience as mysterious and haunting as hearing the sudden beat of drums in the middle of the night. . . . The seductive power of Vassanji’s prose mesmerizes. . . . One of Canada’s best novelists . . . . Vassanji’s new novel is darker and far more complex than any of his previous books.”
—Quill & Quire

A man without a country
By TChris
Martin Kigoma, a publisher in Tanzania, meets Kamal Kunja in a hospital in Kilwa. As Kunja recovers from his sickness, he tells his story to Kigoma. Kunja's story interweaves with the story of Kilwa, its people and its myths. Kunja's trip from Canada to Kilwa ultimately becomes a journey of self-discovery. As he explores his past, Kunja contemplates his sense of rootlessness (not quite African, not quite Indian, certainly not Canadian), and begins to question whether he wants to be buried under several feet of snow on a continent to which he does not belong.

Kunja was born in Kilwa to an African mother and an absent Indian father. He was the childhood friend of a girl named Saida, the granddaughter of Mzee Omari, a renowned poet who doubled as a national historian. The second part of the novel recites the history of Kilwa as it was understood by Omari, beginning with Kunja's ancestor in India who, in the 1870s, answered the call of jihad against the Germans who claimed the right to lead the Africans out of darkness (at gunpoint, if necessary). Omari tells how his own life is shaped by betrayal and forgiveness as Kilwa moves from the harsh rule of Germans to the gentler oppression of the British.

After her grandfather's death, Saida becomes a mganga (spiritual healer or advisor). She gives Kunja a tawiz (locket) in which is sealed a prayer. Although Kunja eventually studies medicine in Uganda and becomes a physician in Canada, he never parts with the tawiz and never forgets his promise to return to Saida. As he continues his search for her -- a difficult task given the reluctance of villagers to discuss her -- Kunja recalls his life after his mother sent him from Kilwa to Dar es Salaam. The final chapters, in which Kunja finally learns about Saida's fate, have the flavor of a supernatural soap opera.

As much as it is Kunja's story, The Magic of Saida is the story of Kilwa. We learn enough about Kilwa's history and culture to understand the place, but not so much as to bog down the story. Celebrated in Milton's Paradise Lost and ruled by Persian sultans before becoming an important port in slave traffic, M. G. Vassanji describes the modern Kilwa, its culture and its people, in terms that are alternately loving and stark. It is a place possessed by djinns, haunted by the spirits of the dead who were hung from mango trees. Vassanji contrasts the old and the new Kilwa, questions whether the changes it has experienced are entirely for the better. What has become of tribal pride, Kigoma asks, now that Tanzania depends so much on foreign generosity? Even Kunja, who can well afford to be generous, doubts the value of charity as a response to "the outstretched hand of Africa." The tension between change and tradition and the struggle for African independence are the novel's strongest themes.

Unlike the chapters that take place in Kilwa, those that are set in other locations are less compelling. The frequent flashbacks to Kunja's life after leaving Kilwa interrupt the narrative flow while doing little to advance the reader's understanding of Kunja. His ill-treatment as a half-caste Indian is well illustrated in a couple of powerful scenes, but too many chapters seem determined to relate the history of Tanzania and Uganda. Kunja's time in Canada and a visit to India are covered in a whirlwind of words. The uneven pace and unnecessary scenes mar an otherwise enjoyable novel. The Magic of Saida is nonetheless worth reading for the picture it paints of Kilwa and for its intriguing story of a man struggling to connect his present to his past.

Saida
By Nergesh Tejani
I lived many years in E. Africa so many names, places, events filled me with nostalgia. But removed from this personal angle the book was poorly written and trite. Not up to Vassanji's usual standard.

The Past is the Present
By Beverly Jackson
• The Magic of Saida is the story of Kamal Punja, a successful doctor from Edmonton, Canada, returning to his birthplace a small coastal town called Kilwa, part of what is now known as Tanzania to search for his childhood sweetheart, Saida.
• What started out as story with a theme of looking for a lost love morphs into a fully complex storyline that examines identity, abandonment, love, hope, and dislocation wrapped up with magic realism elements and infused with history of the past and present.
• Once again I was drawn into the skillful storytelling of the author as he looks at East Africa through a lens that explores history, politics, religion, ethnicity and societies yet making it personal and intimate.
• As the storyline fluidity moves between the past and the present in Kamal’s life and the past and present of the history of the region, it is Kamal’s background of having an African mother and Indian father that allows for the exploration of the cultures from an inside view. The reader gets to see sectarian conflicts get ignited by forces that have little to do with many who bear the burden of these conflicts and have even less power to resist.
• As Kamal is given “opportunities” that he is “pushed” to accept, often the price he pays is abandonment by those he loves.
• At times some of the historical parts dragged the story down but they are really so necessary to this story and to our understanding of migration and relocation of this area.
• I learned much about the German colonization of East Africa, the role of WWI on East Africa, and the changeover from the German rule to the British rule
• While all of my questions did not get answered by the end of the book relating to some of the outstanding questions/concerns that Kamal has questioned throughout his life – I did see how the past (even the past we are not aware of) so influences the present. As I look around the world and wonder about conflicts that seem to just sprung up I am learning that that the past is the present.
• This is my second book by the author and once again my knowledge has been enriched in an enjoyable reading experience.
• I highly recommend this book for readers of historical fiction.
• One of my favorite quotes from this book is – “Still, he was different. His features announced it plainly, spoke of provenance, posed questions. There were reminders, the small and large ones, accidental or aimed to wound. He had his memories, his private world to turn to at night. No one could interfere with his memories, they were his solace, his hope for some future resolution in his life. They chained him to his past.”
• Second favorite quote – “But, beware of the mouse who caresses you as he knaws.”

Very good, tho a little more thought about continuity would have made this better
By Yorick
Most of the stories in this volume are among the best in the Marvel G.I. Joe canon. It shouldn't be missed. The Joes' underground base is destroyed, romance flickers with Flint and Lady Jaye, Cobra Commander begins a new life and the long-term plotline with the Cobra Terror-Drome launch bases continues. As usual, Larry Hama does great things with Hasbro's directives ("we have to sell this toy this month", basically) and then-regular artist Rod Whigham provides cinematic style. (Todd McFarlane filled in on the last issue; since someone else inked his pencils, it's not as "hatchy" as McFarlane's work often is.)

IDW did an very good job with this reprint collection. I've seen some of their other volumes and often the reproduction is terrible, looking like it was shot directly from printed comics (fuzzy lines, dot-patterns from the old coloring processes, muddiness), and/or it's been badly recolored. The coloring here is top-notch. Some lines are a little fuzzy tho -- this is worst on issue 54 -- which probably means they worked from scans of the comics, instead of original art like Marvel's reprints (volumes 1-5) (IDW also printed 1-5, but I haven't looked at them, because I own the Marvel editions; I assume that since those books used modern printing that IDW would have been able to get the digital files to print from for their editions). I knocked off one star for the fuzziness of the scans.

This book collects issues 51-60. Unfortunately, the story in #56 concluded in that year's GIJoe Yearbook, which isn't included, and apparently won't be in the next volume, either. Issue 60 could easily have been pushed to the next volume (#59 wraps up well and 60 is a filler before the next big story arc) and the Yearbook story inserted, but oh well, hopefully a collection of the four yearbooks is forthcoming. Volume 7 is also expected to skip Special Missions #6, which falls between 61 and 62.

IDW did a great job and had a brilliant idea republishing the original Marvel Larry Hama comics bundled up ten comics to a book. Makes them easier to read, store, and share with the next generation. Yo Joe !!!!

Classic stories, good art, could use better reproduction
By Kid Kyoto
Classic GI Joe Vol 6 reprints issues 51-60 (1986-7) of the Marvel GI Joe comic. We get blazing combat in Central America, Scotland, the Mideast, Staten Island and the Jersey Shore. New toys are introduced and promptly blown to smithereens. The Pit is destroyed, Destro unmasks and Cobra Commander dies (but gets better). So yes, you're getting everything you could ever want in a GI Joe comic.

Larry Hama's scripts are as solid as ever, a wild mix of military terminology, humor and outright crazy ideas. By the admittedly weak standards of this book the art is solid throughout, mostly by Rod Whigham but with a fill-in issue by a young Todd McFarlane.

My one complaint is the reproduction. Most comics from before the 90s have to be recolored for modern printing, an expensive and often unprofitable process. According to their website publisher IDW has been trying a new computer process for these volumes and it's obvious they were still working the bugs out. The art look scratchy and faded, colors are muted and some background are almost colorless. Letters are changed in some of the dialogue creating embarrassing typos that were not in the original book. It's not the worst reproduction job I've seen but it certainly feels sub-standard.

Despite the problems I bought it anyway, and enjoyed the heck out of it but buyers should be aware of these issues.

How Women Got Their Curves and Other Just-So Stories: Evolutionary Enigmas, by David P Barash, Judith Eve cor

So how did women get their curves? Why do they have breasts, while other mammals only develop breast tissue while lactating, and why do women menstruate, when virtually no other beings do so? What are the reasons for female orgasm? Why are human females kept in the dark about their own time of ovulation and maximum fertility, and why are they the only animals to experience menopause?

David P. Barash and Judith Eve Lipton, coauthors of acclaimed books on human sexuality and gender, discuss the theories scientists have advanced to explain these evolutionary enigmas (sometimes called "Just-So stories" by their detractors) and present hypotheses of their own. Some scientific theories are based on legitimate empirical data, while others are pure speculation. Barash and Lipton distinguish between what is solid and what remains uncertain, skillfully incorporating their expert knowledge of biology, psychology, animal behavior, anthropology, and human sexuality into their entertaining critiques. Inviting readers to examine the evidence and draw their own conclusions, Barash and Lipton tell an evolutionary suspense story that captures the excitement and thrill of true scientific detection.

From Publishers Weekly
This husband-and-wife team, respectively an evolutionary biologist and a psychiatrist specializing in women's health, have written a delightful, thought-provoking volume on perennial questions about female biology. Each of five chapters centers on one question: why do women menstruate? why is ovulation hidden? what's the evolutionary function of the female breast? is there an evolutionary explanation for the female orgasm? and why does menopause occur? Barash and Lipton acknowledge there are no definitive answers to any of these questions. What they do so very well is offer numerous hypotheses along with ideas on how to test them. For example, they propose that the female orgasm might, among other possibilities, facilitate fertilization, serve as a copulatory reward, encourage monogamy or reduce infanticide. Along the way, they present a large amount of accessible information about biology, psychology, physiology and anatomy. Even more important, they demonstrate how scientists work to create and assess hypotheses while having a great deal of fun. They also show how science slowly but inexorably pushes back the darkness surrounding complex issues and how evolutionary theory can help us understand all aspects of human biology. Photos. (May)

From School Library Journal
Barash (evolutionary biologist & psychology, Univ. of Washington) and his wife, Lipton, a clinical psychiatrist specializing in women's health, have written several books considering men and women in the light of evolution (The Myth of Monogamy; Making Sense of Sex); here, they concentrate on females. By examining the many explanations, which they call "just-so stories," for various female enigmas (menstruation, ovulation, breasts and hips, orgasm, and menopause) and putting forth the research that may or may not support those explanations, the authors present an intriguing exercise in how evolutionists think and develop their ideas. Older titles addressing these female characteristics include Sarah Hrdy's Mother Nature: Maternal Instincts and How They Shape the Human Species and Elaine Morgan's The Descent of Woman, but this new title updates the research and incorporates some new ideas. Recommended for larger university and public library collections of women's studies materials.—Margaret Henderson, Virginia Commonwealth Univ. Lib., Richmond

Review

A delightful, thought-provoking volume on perennial questions about female biology.

(Publishers Weekly)

The book is well written and even though evolutionary biology can sometimes be difficult to comprehend, the authors do a good job in describing and explaining the various hypotheses encountered. The examples they use shed light on complex biological and evolutionary traits and adaptations.

The world may never know...
By Kaeli Vandertulip
As an undergraduate, I had to write a paper for my evolution class on some mystery of evolution. I wanted to pick a topic I didn't think my professor would know too much about, so I decided to research why human females have menstrual periods. It is a classic example of trying to determine the evolutionary cost/benefit to a part of half the population's lives. Barash and Lipton (a husband/wife team of evolutionary biologist and psychiatrist) examine this and a handful of other "women's mysteries" in this highly entertaining, well researched and approachable book.
This book is clearly intended for the reader who may not know all the details behind the theory of evolution, such as sexual versus natural selection or adaptive versus nonadaptive mutations. By reading this book, you'll not only learn what those mean, you will gain insight into how a wide array of scientists contribute to the explanation of evolutionary mysteries.

While the chapter on menstruation was old news to me (almost all of the research I used in my paper was used by these authors, though they did leave out a random hypothesis about soy consumption), the chapters on breasts, orgasm, ovulation, and menopause were new. They even took some of the theories I had just accepted (such as breasts being a mimic of the buttocks and orgasm in women being akin to nipples on men--they are just there because of fetal development) and pointed out the flaws with those theories, the support and flaws for other theories, and their own theories. Unlike many books on similar topics, these authors concede that 1) there is no way one theory could explain everything about any of these topics; a constellation of factors could be at play and 2) they just don't and can't know all the answers. I do wish they had spent a little more time considering the costs of each of these issues, though--cost is just as important to evolution as benefit. They do include some cost issues, so this is a minor quibble with an otherwise good book.

Because this book was intended for a non-specialist crowd, some of the information tends to be repeated and some details are left out. However, I think most specialists or even courses on evolution would enjoy adding comments to this book. And let's face it, half the fun of books showing us an array of hypotheses is ripping them to shreds!

Mysteries of the most beautiful creature
By wiredweird
Speaking as a human male, I find the human female an endless source of wonder, awe, and bafflement - plus the occasional shade of frustration. Her wonder goes deeper than the everyday, though, and these authors explore some of the inexplicable facets of her lovely biology.

These essays explore a number of features that distinguish human from nearly all other mammalian females: visible menstruation, invisible fertile periods, female orgasm, breasts far larger than needed for nourishing babies, and menopause. In discussing each subject, the authors start with established science, then take their speculations on human origins far farther than facts can really justify. (Those are the "Just So Stories" hinted at in the book's title.) Instead of mere fiction or conjecture, however, the authors phrase most of their imaginings as testable hypotheses, the critical step in turning maybes into science. Along the way, however, they demonstrate clearly how much fun it can be to rove through that wondering, wandering stage before you're ready to take your guesswork to the lab. There is no irony in the fact that the first step of scientific inquiry is so utterly unscientific.

Research since this book came out only deepens the mystery of her animal workings. Everyone knows that women's tears tend to melt mens' hearts. It turns out there's a real pheromonal effect at work, one that stands up to double-blind testing. And it works only with emotional tears, not the cutting-onions kind. Who knew? Or, more to the point, who didn't?

Examining the human animal in evolutionary, mechanistic terms takes away none of her majesty or wonder. Quite the opposite, it only deepens our appreciation of just how much we don't know. I have lots more questions than these - like why pregnancies don't all end in immune rejection of the non-self tissue - but this reasoned and well-written book gets the discussion off to a sound start.

How women got their curves
By tommy october
for those who like entertaining science and very insightful academics, this is the book for you. The authors (husband & wife) are witty and thorough with their research. They have no agenda and in many cases don't have a definite answer to some evolutionary issues and instead just present the facts. A good read and much lighter than you would suspect. If you're at all inquisitive about female evolution, this is the tome for you. Can't recommend it enough.
