About the Author
Benacquista, born in France of Italian immigrants, dropped out of film studies to finance his writing career. After being a museum night watchman, a train guard and a parasite on the Paris gallery opening and cocktail circuit, he is now a successful author and screenwriter. Her work includes Catherine Millet's explicit autobiography, 'The sexual life of Catherine M' and Beigbeder's attack novel on advertising, '£9.99'.She also translated 'Death in the Dordogne' by Louis Sanders recently favourably reviewed by the NYT.

Interesting

Two men meet in a Tennis club in Paris. After a game and a few drinks, they decide to challenge each other to 'change' who they are, and adopt a new identity. They will meet each other in three years time, with their new identity. As a concept, this in intriguing. I don't quite feel the blurb on the book explains it too well - one of the characters undegoes the complete identity change, the other just seems to find his solution in alcohol changing his shy, anxious outlook on life.

Of the one who undergoes the complete make-over as it were: he gives up his job as a framer to become a PI. He leaves his wife without warning, gets plastic surgery to change his appearance, and starts his new life. He even turns up at his own remembrance service two years after his disapearance, unnoticed. The alcoholic is previously tee-total and works in some soulless corporate job. When he starts drinking he meets and exciting beautiful woman and starts a relationship with him; he also find success in work as he just tells people what he thinks. He also invents a 'trickpack' which is a soft drinks can cut out to hide a can of alcohol - the patent to this makes him a millionaire. The first man changes himself physically, the second cerebrally.

The book is interesting, but doesn't quite hang together. The alcoholic seemd magically transformed by the alcohol, but without suffering any side-effects such as vomiting, agonising hangovers, etc. He is sympathetic though, which is more than can be said for the other character, who you just can't warm to at all. By leaving his wife, job, friends, everything, he doesn't seem to gain anything in particular. Could he not have just changed job, had plastic surgery, but still stayed with his wife? The motivation just doesn't make sense, and feels like a whim. Such amoral, callous behaviour for no obvious gain seems pointless. If he got run down by a car on page 30, I would have thought he deserved it. It becomes interesting towards the end when he appears as a voyuer at his own remembrance party - speaking to the people he used to know without them knowing who he was. But this appears too late in the book really - until then you couldn't care less if he lived or died.

But for something a bit different to read, worth a look in.

terrific character study

The two men in their forties met when neither confident of their sport's ability played tennis against each other at Les Feuillants Tennis Club. Afterward Tierry Blin and Nicolas Gredzinksi went to the bar. Over several drinks they both admit to one anther they are unhappy with their present life and the apparent tedious future. Tierry is a successful picture framer who wants to become a private detective while Nicholas is an executive trying to hang onto the corporate ladder that he detests. Under the influence of imbibing too much alcohol they bet as to who could change his life the most. They agreed to meet in three years right here.

Both are frightened to make the change, but Tierry tries dropping his loyal clientele to become a sleuth while legal circumstances forces Gred to let go of the ladder. As each leaves their safety net behind neither knows what to expect, but the time has come to find out what makes them tick as the capitalist world has sucked away their identity. However, neither is prepared for the danger that comes as each journey into the unknown fostered by the women in their lives.

This is a terrific character study that looks deep into the onset of middle age with mortality around the corner and the need to believe that there is more to life than just making money in a safe environs. The story line rotates point of view between the two lead protagonists yet though clearly character driven has plenty of action. Fans of something different especially those who have become a bit cynical will appreciate this powerful glimpse at the risk of change to become SOMEONE ELSE.

Writing for Saturday Night Live during the sketch show's legendary early seasons may be Davis's claim to fame, but this captivating memoir is about much more, including his suburban Minneapolis childhood, couch-surfing through his hometown, San Francisco, and New York City during the 1970s, and a life-long friendship with comedian-turned-political commentator-turned (probable) Senator Al Franken. Of course, that doesn't stop Davis from hooking readers at the outset with the true Coneheads origin story, involving Dan Aykroyd, LSD and a trip to Easter Island. Later, Davis recalls poignantly Aykroyd's eulogy at John Belushi's funeral, which began, "I so did not want to have to do this." Davis also speaks reverently of Lorne Michaels, despite their (often hilarious) professional differences. Davis's portrait of Franken, though, is most endearing. Fellow Minneapolisians, Franken and Davis were a comedy team throughout their young careers; Davis recreates their partnership in rich, funny details, bolstered by transcripts of their recent e-mail correspondence. Though it features some lurid and hysterical SNL stories, Davis's memoir is less a backstage expose than a winning coming-of-age story featuring a funny Midwestern kid following his unlikely dream to the top.

Driving That Train, High On Cocaine.....

I'm a HUGE fan of SNL (especially that of the early years), so I snapped this title up almost as soon as it became available. Unfortunately, I made the mistake of believing that a book with the subtitle, "The Early Days of SNL from Someone Who Was There", might actually focus on, you know, THE EARLY DAYS OF SNL !!!

But that's really not the case.......

Instead, what we get are a patchwork of recollections from Tom Davis's drug-addled life and career, with emphasis on his friendship/partnership/break-up with Al Franken, some adventures and experiences shared with his pal Dan Aykroyd, and numerous exploits involving Jerry Garcia and The Grateful Dead (Davis's favorite band).

To be fair, over the course of the book Davis DOES relate a number of stories from his time as a writer (and occasional performer) on SNL, however, nowhere near as many as I expected, or had hoped for, based on the misleading title.

The other stories that are told are, for the most part, interesting, and help the reader better understand the truly atypical life that Tom Davis has led, however, it's the way he relates those stories that are this book's biggest problem................simply put, they're ALL over the place.

The story line (what little there is) is disjointed, and rather difficult to follow. The narrative constantly jumps back and forth from the present to the past (and back again) without much explanation (or segue) in between, leaving the reader in a semi-constant state of confusion regarding 'time and place'.........and THIS from a man who makes his living as a writer!!! (Though I realize that the writing of one's bio is VERY different from the scripting of comedy "bits" for tv, movies and stand-up, understanding that fact doesn't make the reading any easier.)

In the end, it's up to the reader to make some kind of sense out of the 'jumbled' story line. I did, and am (mostly) glad that I did, since I learned a few things about 'Saturday Night Live' that I didn't already know.

Still, I can't recommend this book to anyone looking for a highly informative read on that particular subject. In fact, I guess I wouldn't recommend it to anyone but the most diehard of 'SNL'ers', or possibly to those looking for a glimpse into some of the formative experiences of Tom Davis's onetime partner, (Minnesota Senator) Al Franken (and "Deadheads" too, might enjoy reading the various exploits of their 'heroes').

Having completed this work, my vote for the best SNL 'history' book is still "Live From New York: An Uncensored History of Saturday Night Live, as Told By Its Stars, Writers and Guests", by James A. Miller and Tom Shales. It provides a decent overview of the show from a number of different perspectives, and is a VERY entertaining (and often surprising) read, to boot (It's even been updated!). Comprised almost entirely of first-hand quotes culled from numerous interviews with the producers, writers, performers, and hosts from the show's past, it touches on every 'era' in SNL history.

And hopefully we'll one day still get the 'definitive' book on the early days of SNL from "someone who was there", but, sad as it is to say, it's now beginning to look like that may never happen.......

Hmmmmmmmm............."Paging Mr. Michaels, Mr. Lorne Michaels..."

The Best You're Gonna Get From Tom Davis

I've read quite a few other books about SATURDAY NIGHT LIVE's history and still find it fascinating. I grew up with the original cast and will always feel a special affection for that part of my youth. My favorite comedy was and still is NATIONAL LAMPOON'S ANIMAL HOUSE.

But something strange happened while reading Tom Davis' memoir: I reached the end and thought to myself, "Well, that's probably the best we're going to get from him."

The writing isn't particularly funny (memories of how funny SNL was carry the book). Some chapters repeat their openings of info he already wrote about. I had to double check pages 152 to 153 to see if I'd missed something since the narrative jumps from Davis showing Jerry Garcia an unproduced script to John Belushi's memorial.

The reason this didn't bother me so much: Davis chronicles the massive amount of drugs he smoked or ingested. He's lucky to remember anything! This is a guy who was getting trashed with John Belushi and Jerry Garcia--and a lot of other people on his way. I thought it was odd that he never appears to have a moment of self-reflection as Belushi, Garcia, Chris Farley and others start dropping dead from their habits. But I know a lot of drug users...and they never think about themselves (unless it involves a play for sympathy or self-pity).

This book isn't so much a history of SNL. That's part of it. The other parts are Tom's trips overseas and his loyal devotion to the Grateful Dead. Since I love travel, I enjoyed the chapters of his drug-fueled wanderings in Asia and India. Since I've never been a fan of the Dead...well...not so much. But the writing is straight-forward and has a casual flow to it (if a little disjointed).

I can't argue with the criticisms and it's not the most insightful look into SATURDAY NIGHT LIVE's history...but it's probably the best we're going to get from Tom Davis.

It could have been a good book but I forgot most of it

Perhaps no other introduction more clearly defines the character of a book as does Al Franken's preamble to Tom Davis' recollections: "Tom's had a fantastic life...but it was my experience that he did not possess much of a memory---which seemed to me an essential ingredient in writing a memoir," writes Al Franken.

Three-fourths of the way through the book, I could not agree more.

One could summarize this book as being about his relationship with drugs, his infatuation with the Greatful Dead, intermissions with girls, drugs, more infatuation with the Greatful Dead, and more girls.

Tom Davis of the team Franken and Davis is best known for.... well, nothing that I can recall off-hand. Dan Ackroid's skit of Julia Child bleeding to death during a kitchen skit was classic, but beyond that one has to wonder just what exactly Tom Davis contributed to the success of Saturday Night Live, the early years.

His personal tales are often interesting, but his presentation is disjointed (no pun intended), and often incomplete. He dabbles into 1976 and the next page you are in 1980, back to 1978 and then off to the early 1990s. Somehow he manages to travel the world, but has no job or money. One minute he is in the audience on David Letterman, and the next he is writing for NBC.

Although this book has several highlights and interesting tales, it reads like a series of short SNL sketches. Basically, it lacks interesting depth. Just when you think you are going to find out something really neat, Davis has a mind blank and you move on to something else. One thing is clear: Tom Davis was, and probably still is, a doper who somehow (we never really find out) lucked his way into an interesting life and ultimately show business, but probably would have been happier if he could have been the publicist for the Greatful Dead. I wonder if that book would have been better?

Pass on this one...

** spoiler alert ** This book, often labled as romantic suspense, was neither romantic nor suspenseful so already it was falling short for me. The pace was so slow that I kept waiting for something - anything - to happen. The plot and personal motivations were so ludicrous as to be unbelievable. A patriarch and his son engaged in deception, forcibly induced coma, stalking, bribery and even murder... all for an heir? Come on. That's a vast strech of the imagination. Maybe it could have worked with another author (though I am highly doubtful - the motivation seems awfully weak to justify the actions) but this just did not work for me. Don't think I'll be seeking anything else out by Harper.

Creepy!!!

As a woman, creepy. The storyline is super easy to follow. You guess the ending way before you get there. But it is a good creepy story. This is a no-brainer, entertaining mystery story. This is a good example of K Harper, get this book NOT "Deep Down" (quite possibly the worst book she has ever written)

Great Idea - Poorly Executed

I bought this book because the concept seemed interesting. Less than 30 pages into the book, I had pretty much figured out what happened, but I slogged through the remaining 360 pages because I'm just not the type to not finish a book once I start. The dialogue is trite and contrived. Even in the midst of what should be an emotionally fraught situation, it reads like the characters are calmly discussing their troubles over a cup of coffee. The narrative is repetitive and uninspired and clearly the author has not yet mastered the concept of "show, don't tell." I'm a big fan of pulp fiction and so was not exactly expecting the great American novel, but this book was just kind of -- boring.

She currently works as a Bereavement Coordinator at a large hospice in Boston, USA where she has developed and facilitated a six-week support programme for the recently bereaved. She has co-authored four self-help books about relationships and motherhood.

Overcoming Grief

Everybody has their own journey to make when trying to deal with grief. I found it helpful to see what books were available on the market to find out if what I was experiencing was a 'normal' response to losing a parent. If you have been bereaved, you will recognize yourself in this book and that was a great comfort for me. I learned that my lack of motivation, deep sadness and myriad other feelings were common experiences for those that have lost someone close to them. Sue's book is comprehensive and practical. She articulated in her writing what was a fog in my head and it helped to try and put a structure around those feelings, and stop putting myself under pressure to cope and especially to cope with other people's expectations of how I should be 'moving on'.. If you are full of sadness and a bit lost and that is what is bringing you to this book, I couldn't recommend it highly enough. Be good to yourself, take it easy and take it slowly.

I am not much on self help books but this one is different

I have never been one for self help books but with the death of my dad, I needed something. A grief counselor recommended that I use this in between sessions with her. This book has been an amazing help and the exercises well worth doing. I would give this to anyone who is going through the grieving process.

This book is extremely helpful to me. I am still using it. I think the fact it has exercises in it makes it very productive. For me most of the exercises were productive in moving me forward. The way it is written I find it easy to read and easy to follow where as other books I tried were less easy.

an enduring classic

Well, I've just finished reading The Trial for the sixth, maybe even eighth time, and as usual my brain is buzzing with all the unanswered questions and unspoken quandaries that this book embeds in the reader's mind.
An aside - this is the first time I have read this particular translation, having read the Muir's work before. Perhaps this translation is a bit livelier, and the chapters, or sequences, are grouped a bit differently, but the general experience of reading and digesting this book was much the same as with the Muir's version. One caution, if you are a first time reader do not read the introduction first. The author gives away much too much of the story and ending in the introduction.
Now, back to the book itself. As "they" say, the mark of a true classic is that you can reread the book several times and always find it fresh. This is most certainly the case with The Trial. I always struggle with the question of K.'s innocence. The reader is told, unequivocally, that the Law is attracted to guilt. Is this an illustration of the unreasoning, monolithic madness that
so often surrounds totalitarian states, or is Kafka tellling
the reader indirectly that K. is guilty? I think most readers,
especially me, want to like and identify with the central
protagonist of a novel, but on this particular rereading
I noticed that K. is really a pretty nasty character. He is
arrogant beyond belief, selfish, treats women and most everyone
else as objects, and is even potentially violent. He alienates
and insults people who have the desire and the means to help him
navigate the formalities and uncertainties of his arrest and
trial. Or, is he an essentially decent fellow who, beset with
unrelenting frustration and anger at being accused and arrested
for a crime he didn't commit, decompensates into irrational
actions? Don't expect easy answers from Kafka. He is not going
to wrap everything up in a pretty bow, fully resolved, so that
you can feel good. It's a damned disturbing, sometimes bizarre,
and ultimately amazing novel. What is noteworthy is how
deceptively simple the construction of the plotline is. First,
the novel is short. Second, there are no parallel or
simultaneous plotlines occurring. There is only one plotline,
that of K. as he is initially arrested and subsequently tries to
make sense of what the charges are and how to deal with them. K.
is in every scene. There's no ,"meanwhile, back at the
courthouse, Inspector Smith was...". So the story, if this novel
can be said to contain a "story", moves along quite quickly.
Kafka's prose style is crisp and unadorned, as you might expect
from someone educated in business and law in early 1900's
Prague.And it's a good thing that he writes so clearly, because
the story itself contains not only some astonishingly bizarre
scenes (the flogging in the closet springs to mind) but dizzying
explanations of the procedures and logic of the court, the Law,
the judges, and lawyers. Imagine a writer like Tom Robbins, or
Don Delillo, with their hallucinogenic segues and refusal to bow
to consistency and logic, trying to pull off the "Lawyer"
or "Painter" sequences. It would be a soggy mess. But Kafka with
his precision and austerity makes it breathtaking.
It's funny, when my friends see me reading Kafka the initial response is almost always surprise and some variation of "Yuck!"
Of course, they haven't read him, but everyone "knows" that he is weird and dark and disturbed plus the book is old and doesn't probably even have a happy ending. Oh well, their loss.
I really want to take a class on Kafka, ideally focussing on the Trial. It is puzzling and unsettling and I'd love to hear other's thoughts on the symbolism and meaning contained in the book. In fact, if you're a Kafka scholar, or just someone who likes and has given some thought to this book, email me with your thoughts.
I unhesitatingly recommend this novel. It is important. It is certainly important to me.

Oh, I am just so mad!

I giving the book 5 stars, because it's a really good read. Not having read any other translation, I must take other reviewer's word that it compares well. Read the other reviews, they are correct about this books quality.
Now, here's why I am mad. I read the introduction. Then I read the translator's notes. The translator is quite full of himself and his cleverness. Thus he points out the sections where he was particularly clever. In doing so, he gives away the plot, the ending of the novel, and why we should think about it the way he translated it, and not trust earlier transactions.
This should have been an afterward, not before the text. I reviewed the plot, including the ending, before reading the text. This somewhat ruined the experience for me. Skip the translator's notes, and you'll have a fine edition of Kafka's influntial novel.

The meaning of Kafkaesque..

Kafkaesque: Impenetrably oppresive or nightmarish, as in the fiction of Franz Kafka.
Indeed, "The Trial" is the epitome of this adjective used to describe the haunting novels of Franz Kafka.
Breon Mitchell's translation is fantastic as it expands and clarifies the first version by the Muirs. A lengthy translators preface is included, written by Mitchell, explaining the reasoning for this new translation based on the German definitive edition. Various examples of the text (in German) are also used in the explanations of the hows and whys.
On to the story itself. Josef K. awakens one more to find that he's been arrested. He doesn't know why and is never told. His daily life is allowed to go on over the course of the year the novel takes place, while trying to understand what is happening. Throughout this process Josef begins to sink further into paranoia and guilt, with the fate of his life in the balance....
This is a deep and dense novel, with various interpretations. It's scary to realize that this could actually happen (perhaps not on this scale) and that's one of things Kafka excels at. Taking the everyday mundane and catapulting it into the realm of the absurd and nightmarish..
The leftover fragments of "The Trial" are also included after the story, adding further insight into this tragic story. It's also worth it to pick up the Muir's translation, to see the differences, and to have the original english version to keep.
A must read.

Another excellent edition of the great Uncle John's Bathroom Readers.In this 500 page edition,the subjects are people some well know and others even obscure,who all had one thing in common.They all did something in their lives that made them famous.Some of what they accomplished benefited mankind;while others are famous for doing something that mankind would have been better off,if they had never existed.
There are literally hundreds of people discussed,and for the most part coverage is limited to a couple of pages on each.If you prefer to read about people famous for specific subjects,such as"Sporting Life","Sideshows","Pickpockets","Bandits & Bad Guys","Magic Time" and 25v other categories,t;there is an index that groupes them at the front of the book.
There is also an extremely detailed index at the back of the book consisting of 16 pages with 1500 or so entries. For Readers who like a little more detail there are several topics for them towards the end of the book.

Megan McDonald is the creator of the popular and award-winning Stink and Judy Moody series. She is also the author of three Sisters Club stories, Ant and Honey Bee: A Pair of Friends at Halloween, and many other books for children. She lives in Sebastopol, California.

Peter H. Reynolds is the illustrator of the Stink and Judy Moody books and the author-illustrator of The Dot, Ish, So Few of Me, and Rose's Garden. He lives in Dedham, Massachusetts.

Wonderful

What a great book for my seven year old. He is just now starting to enjoy chapter books. We have tried several different types of books but this one he has taken too. I hope that Megan McDonald has sequels to add with Stink. Great pictures and antics from the author and illustrator. Waiting for more

Geez

I have a real problem with how Judy treats Stink in this one. She is a terrible sister - teasing, mean, disrespectful. I realize that that's the point of her character (annoying sister), but for 6-9 year olds, I'm not sure they can read this and realize that no one should treat anyone the way Judy treats Stink. My kids like to read about people being kind to their siblings (Boxcar Children, Cam Jansen, Magic Tree House), and I think that children just learning to read chapter books might not be able to read with the critical eye that's needed when someone as mean as Judy comes on the scene.

Great book for encouraging boys to read

This book follows Stink through a couple weeks of his life. Stink is the younger brother of Judy Moody. He is very discouraged because he is the shortest person in his class and it appears that he is shrinking!

After I read this book I asked my little one to read it and he enjoyed Stink's comics and the easy flow of the story.
