It is what it is.

I feel badly for the above reviewer who was assigned this as a course text. That was not the purpose for which this book was designed or written. What this book is intended to be is a reference work, a tool for scholars and perhaps advanced students working as researchers. Like the other titles in this Columbia University Press Series, it is clearly a work written under contract. It is not a labor of love or passion, and you will not find new insights here. But it is a professional product. It provides a brief five chapter historical overview, a glossary of key terms, a chronology, and a roughly hundred-page discussion of the scholarly literature and methods of the field. I'll be honest, my first reference stop for Plains Indians would be Volume 13 of the Handbook of North American Indians, but this title might be a useful supplement to it in some ways. Also the Cambridge History of the Native Peoples of North America accomplishes much of what this title accomplishes more economically.

Not a good textbook

This book was used in an upperlevel course titled: Indians of the Great Plains. The book was full of fact after fact and run-on paragraphs. It was a difficult read for me, I couldn't retain the barrage of information. The instructor didn't even use the book and rarely mentioned it. As a result, my university bookstore is not buying the book back for next semester. The only useful part of the book was the timeline at the end.
