Drill Here, Drill Now, Pay Less: A Handbook for Slashing Gas Prices and Solving Our Energy Crisis, by Newt Gingrich

New York Times bestselling author, former Speaker of the House, and Fox News political analyst Newt Gingrich has a plan for slashing gas prices and reducing our long-term dependence on foreign oil.
Gingrich is famous for taking big, visionary ideas and boiling them down into practical solutions as demonstrated in this year's earlier release, Real Change, which was on the New York Times bestseller list for eleven weeks. His new book Drill Here, Drill Now, Pay Less does just that. Dealing not only with spiraling gas prices, but with the energy crisis as a whole, Gingrich shows how we can safely reap the benefits of America's own natural resources and technology in gas, oil, coal, wind, solar, biofuels and nuclear energy.

Gingrich argues that the pinch Americans are feeling at the pump is not a blip in the economy but a looming crisis--affecting not only the price of gas, but the price of food, the strength of our economy, and our national security.
To meet this crisis, Gingrich lays out a national strategy that will tap America's scientists, engineers, and entrepreneurs, and require Congress to unlock our oil reserves and remove all the impediments and disincentives that unnecessary government regulation has put in the way of American energy independence. The energy crisis is solvable, as Newt Gingrich's plan makes clear. His handbook, Drill Here, Drill Now, Pay Less is sure to become the talk of the presidential campaign season.

From the Back Cover
Newt Gingrich Presents a Bold Plan for America's Energy Independence:

Do It All. Do It Now. Do It for America.

America is unrivaled in our ability to solve tough problems and create bold, powerful solutions. That's exactly what we need to do with the energy crisis we now face. We CAN become energy independent, while lowering prices at the pump today and developing innovative and effective energy alternatives for the future. We CAN produce an overwhelming supply of oil and natural gas here at home, and break the stranglehold that foreign (often hostile) countries have on our energy supply, and by extension, our economy. And we CAN be responsible stewards of our environment, protecting the grand beauty and richness of our country without sacrificing our robust engines of growth, expansion, and entrepreneurship. As Newt Gingrich, former Speaker of the House and bestselling author, spells out in stunning simplicity, when it comes to developing domestic energy resources, we CAN do it all. Isn't it time we relied on American energy for America's security and prosperity? With your help, your citizen action, and Newt Gingrich's plan as laid out in this handbook, we can solve this energy crisis--and slash gas prices, too.

Great book, good insite and on target.
By digitalPimple
Newt has the right idea and good insight. This is a little outdated with major finds happening in the past few years.

The US should be using every available resource for gathering all the energy we can from our own resources instead of spending our dollars to people who hate and undermine the US.

The green movement as always is too far ahead of itself promoting pipe dreams and "ideas". We will not see anything green for decades.

BTW this book will be updated with new information in the coming weeks.

Advocacy Book...Good Intent But Unbalanced And Shallow
By W. Nichols
First, I'm an independent. I do have 3 decades experiences as a federal worker working government programs with exposure to our elected officials. I'm familiar with the capabilities and limitations on both sides of the aisle. This includes energy. Mr. Gingrich...tho well meaning shows a lack of understanding of the complexity of the issue.

He does provide an adequate overview though slanted toward his political view. The strength of his case is the increasing daily power of special interests...does he acknowledge those he follows and in his party?

Two points illustrate his limitations. First, he never addresses that 35% of oil is used for crucial non-transportation aspects. These range from agriculture to plastics plus hundreds of more vital applications. He could include financial models showing the gravity of the consequences of losing this capability to better make his point of why we need to drill. Second, he should research EROEI...or energy return on energy energy invested...it frames how and why we can and should change based on scientific...managerial efficiency and effectiveness. It also will reveal the flaws on his too optimistic view of additional oil...buttressed by actual data (i.e. depletion rates, on line rates, etc.).

Yes...we are going to have an energy revolution...but it will be painful and take decades. His almost blind adherence to his sources without auditing and questioning them is a key example of why our government is broke IMO. His recommendations...though some noteworthy...are mainly 1 dimensional to a 3 dimensional problem.

The serious reader should explore other books on Amazon that more completely describe this issue to understand the importance, difficulty and gravity of this situation. I also suggest the Oil Drum...ASPO plus Solar...Wind...other alternative energy web sites. One caution...working closely with numerous leading edge technologies...they seldom come on line as quickly as the proponents say. This is why EROEI...management and decision systems are vital. IMO...concepts nearly foreign to Congress and White House as evidenced in hearings.

Geologic Nonsense
By R. E Westgard
Newt's ignorance of oil geology is evident from the title. There is a reason oil companies are called E&Ps with the exploration part first. You don't take a $400,000/day drill ship out to sea and start poking random holes in the ocean floor. We have little knowledge of the structures off the east and west coasts or in the Beaufort and Chuckchi Seas. We have better data in the Gulf, but the good new stuff is under allochthonous salt at great depth, not economic at current prices. The Green River oil shale is a 35 year joke. For one thing it isn't oil.
The U.S. has about 3% of the world's oil reserves despite nonsense from Gingrich and his ilk.
Rolf Westgard, member Geological Society of America

Island in a Storm: A Rising Sea, a Vanishing Coast, and a Nineteenth-Century Disaster that Warns of a Warmer World, by Abby Sallenger

In the mid-nineteenth century, the Isle Derniere was emerging as an exclusive summer resort on the coast of the Gulf of Mexico. About one hundred miles from New Orleans, it attracted the most prominent members of antebellum Louisiana society. Hundreds of affluent planters and merchants retreated to the island, not just for its pleasures, but also to escape the scourge of yellow fever epidemics that ravaged cities like New Orleans each summer. Then, without warning, on August 10, 1856, a ferocious hurricane swept across the island, killing half of its four hundred inhabitants. The Isle Derniere was left barren, except for a strange forest standing in the surf.

Drawing from a rich trove of newspaper articles, letters, diaries, and interviews, Abby Sallenger re-creates the chain of events that led a group of people to seek refuge on an exposed strip of land in the sea. He chronicles the dramatic course of the hurricane itself, as seen through the eyes of a diverse cast of real-life characters, including eighteen-year-old Emma Mille, her French father, a steamboat captain, a pastor, and a slave. Island in a Storm is the story of their bravery and cowardice, luck and misfortune, life and death.

At the heart of this narrative lies another, equally compelling, story. Sallenger, an oceanographer, traces the insidious link between the environmental deaths across the Mississippi delta and the human deaths that occurred when the storm swept ashore. The result is a fascinating portrait of a coast in perpetual motion and a rising sea that made the Isle Derniere particularly vulnerable to a great hurricane.

Ultimately, Island in a Storm is a cautionary environmental tale. Global warming is spreading the unique hazards of river deltas to coasts around the world, and the signs of what happened to Isle Derniere may soon be appearing on other islands. The account of this nineteenth-century disaster and its aftermath offers a vital historical lesson as we continue to develop precarious coastal locations whose vulnerability will only grow as sea levels rise across the globe.

Lisa Fasulo, Naples Daily News
"I simply could not put the book down. It is a riveting story, made... more so because it is fully factual... With the threat of global warming and our sea levels rising, the potential for this is very real."

Susan Larson, New Orleans Times Picayune
"[F]ast-moving narrative... He makes it all vivid and immediate and very human..."

Jeff Masters, PhD, Director of Meteorology, Weather Underground, Wunder Blog
"Sallenger's first-class story-telling of the remarkable tales of survival ... make this a book well worth reading."

Erin R. Wayman, Earth Magazine
"[A]n absorbing book that reads more like fiction than fact. The book is a great read for geo-novices, fans of science history and anyone who likes a good adventure tale."

Chere Coen, Lafayette Advertiser
"Sallenger provid(es) us with a window into the tragedy as if we are standing on the beach feeling the sand sting our eyes and the waters rise up our bodies... a riveting account of a horrible disaster."

Douglas Brinkley, Professor of History, Rice University and author of The Great Deluge: Hurricane Katrina, New Orleans, and the Mississippi Gulf Coast
"Perhaps the most urgent crisis of our time is Global Warming. In Island in a Storm one of America's top oceanographers—Abby Sallenger—documents the perils of coastal erosion. Using Isle Derniere as case-study, Sallenger brilliantly explains what happens when the sea rises and land disappears. A very important book!"

Bethany Ewald Bultman, author of Reflections of the South, Compass New Orleans, and Compass Gulf South, and the descendent of thirteen victims of the 1856 Isle Dernier Hurricane
“A masterful page-turner juxtaposing the remarkable parallel tales of the survival by a 19th century Creole maiden of a catastrophic hurricane with the staggering geological perils confronting the residents of the fragile Gulf coastline today.”

Ellen Prager, PhD, chief scientist, Aquarius Reef Base and author of Chasing Science at Sea
“Abby Sallenger expertly combines the history of a hurricane and its disastrous impact with the fascinating science of hurricanes and coastal geology. He illustrates the dangers that a rising sea, a subsiding coast, and hurricanes pose to populated shores, and with a loud wake up call, he warns policymakers and home owners who insist on building or rebuilding on barrier islands.”

Ivor van Heerden, PhD, deputy director, LSU Hurricane Center, and author of The Storm: What Went Wrong and Why During Hurricane Katrina—the Inside Story from One Louisiana Scientist
“This is a wonderful book, a must-read for anyone interested in our future, which shows how historic tragedies can be lessons, especially as climate change speeds along its merry way.”

Robert S. Young PhD, director, Program for the Study of Developed Shorelines, Western Carolina University
“Rarely does a book combine fascinating story-telling, regional history, and a science lesson in one compelling package. Island in a Storm does just that. The tale is more than 150 years old, but there are real lessons to be learned for coastal communities on today’s vulnerable barrier islands.”

Choice
“Few authors have been able to convey with such clarity and power the complex geologic processes of coastal waters under storm conditions, particularly the chaotic commingling of ocean waves, tidal currents, storm surges, sand erosion, and elevated sea level that can at times cause wholesale destruction of such fragile, low-lying landforms of sand.”

SOMETHING FOR EVERYONE - ONE OF THE TOP FIVE BEST READS I'VE HAD THIS YEAR.
By D. Blankenship
At first glance, you would wonder as to the timeliness of a book addressing a devastating storm which occurred in 1856 and slammed into the Gulf of Mexico and in particular, a small resort island; Isle Derniere. After reading just the first chapter of this rather unique and amazing work, the wonder will disappear as you, the reader will start recognizing quite familiar situations, granted, often stored in the back of the mind, but never the less there. The message of this work is timeless...in so many different ways.

This work offers so very much in so few pages. It is like reading two or three books simultaneously. Not only is the story absolutely captivating, but the facts, trivial and important, fly fast and furious. We receive a wonderful lesson in history as the author takes us to antebellum Louisiana, giving the reader glimpses in the lives of the rich sugarcane plantation owners, politicians, developers, Riverboat Captains, the poor working people, the horrid and unworkable institution of slavery, transportation of the time, attitudes, dress, diet and so much more. A history of New Orleans is served up which is a separate and fascinating study unto its own. Along with the history lesson, the reader receives lessons in river, ocean and weather dynamics along with a life and death story of an island. Behind this entire work though, the author has woven dire warnings; warnings that need to be heeded. Have we changed all that much since the mid 1800s?

Basically, this is the story of Isle Derniere, one of the various barrier islands off of the coast of Louisiana which on August 10, 1856 was hit and demolished and more or less completely whipped out by a hurricane. It is the story of the rich vacationers there and their slaves as they tried desperately to survive. Along with these unfortunate folk, we have a number of nearby ships which are suffering the same fate. Through the authors pen we are served a wonderful, vivid and delicious profile of many individuals; the good, the bad and the ugly. The reader must keep in mind that this is not in any sense of the word a novel. This is a true story which has been meticulously reconstructed by the author through detailed research. Fortunately for us, there were survivors of this disaster and much documentation and first hand accounts are available to which the author has had access. The author has perfectly captured the essence of the times.

Now we have here even extra bonuses! Abby Sallenger has a PhD in Marine Science from the University of Virginia and was the former chief scientist of the U.S. Geological Survey's Center for Coastal Geology. He is currently leading the USGS storm Impact research group. Sound pretty boring, huh? When I first open this book I must admit that my eyes did a bit of a roll and I let out a little moan of despair. Goodness was I wrong! No dry thesis here, no, no, no! No ramblings of a musty academic are to be found in these pages! This work is as much of a page turner as many a novel I have read! This guy, Sallenger, can write! He is also an obvious natural story teller. I can truthfully favorably compare his skills to that of David McCullough and Stephen Ambrose as a writer of popular history. It does not stop there though. While I am far from an expert in Marine Science, History of Louisiana or meteorology, I have, over the past 50 years, done a tremendous amount of reading in these areas and traveled through the geographical areas featured in this work, so when I say that this book is well researched, it is not an empty statement just to fill up space...this writer knows his stuff!

This work is a fascinating read and will give the reader much food for thought on many levels. The earth has been changing for millions of years and our coast lines change at a comparatively fast page. Will we learn from our past? Will we heed the warnings we are receiving via a rising sea level and shrinking ice cap? Personally, I am quite pessimistic in this area, but you need to read this one yourself and make your own mind up.

Bottom Line: A wonderful mixture of history, science and the human condition told by a very skillful writer and story teller.

I enthusiastically recommend that you put this book at the top of your "to read" list. The time you spend reading it will be well worth it!

The Past As Portent For The Future
By John D. Cofield
In the summer of 1856 Isle Dernier was a fast developing resort area catering to the wealthy citizens of New Orleans and Louisiana who wanted relief from heat and high humidity and security from the threat of yellow fever epidemics. That Isle Dernier was a low lying coastal island with no protection from Gulf storms worried no one until August, when the wind began to blow and the surf started to rise higher and higher, finally sweeping most of the island's structures and their human inhabitants away.

The 1850s were a time of turmoil and growth in the United States, particularly in the area around New Orleans. The decade was also a time of great scientific advancement. Scientists, both professional and amateur, were just beginning to understand the process in which tropical storms formed and grew into hurricanes. Communication on land could be fast thanks to the recent invention of the telegraph, but the wires didn't yet reach beyond metropolitan areas and information from ships at sea was still subject to long delays. These handicaps contributed to Isle Dernier's inhabitants' lack of awareness of the danger they were in and to a long delay in getting assistance to the survivors after the storm had passed.

Its fortunate that several of the survivors were literate and inclined to tell their stories, as this allows an almost hourly account of what happened on the Isle. As in any disaster there were amazing tales of survival and heroism and some deplorable examples of cowardice and looting. But what I found most intriguing about Island In A Storm was the geological and climatological explanation for what happened on the Isle and elsewhere in Louisiana that August:the natural forces at work shaping and then scouring away coastlines, how man's efforts to curb these natural forces tends to exacerbate their effects, and how ignoring the evidence of past disasters only leads to greater peril. This is especially compelling in the afterword, in which Dr. Sallenger warns that rising sea levels in a warmer world will inevitably mean problems for those who build and rebuild on barrier islands and other low lying areas.

Dr. Abby Sallenger leads the US Geological Survey's Storm Impact research group. His background in geology and marine science equips him to handle this subject thoroughly and professionally, and his interest in history and ability to write well enable him to present the story of Isle Dernier in a manner that is always interesting, even to the general reader without a specialist background.

Island in a Storm
By S. Jeffress Williams
Abby Sallenger, a senior coastal scientist with more than 30 years experience studying storm and sea-level rise effects on coasts- but a 1st time author- has written a compelling and thororoughly interesting account of the sudden and dramatic effects of the 1856 hurricane on the Isles Derniers barriers islands and the people living and ultimately dying there, there. The book blends very effectly the science of storm as agents driving coastal change, their effects on coastal landforms causing barrier islands to cross tipping points and disintegrate, and how these complex geologic processes affect the people who choose to build in such high risk areas. Sallenger's take-home message is that low-lying areas such as barrier islands are highly vulnerable and should be avoided for building and settlement. This was good advice for 1856 and should be heeded especially today with large populations living in the coastal zone, trillions of dollars in infrastructure, and compelling scientific evidence that a warming world is already bringing more storms and sea-level rise. Abby Sallenger's account of events 150 years ago should be a wake up call for all of us to reconsider how we view natural processes and develop more sensible and sustainable ways of enjoying the coast but reducing the risks.

Terror, Religion, and Liberal Thought (Columbia Series on Religion and Politics), by Richard B. Miller

Religious violence may trigger feelings of repulsion and indignation, especially in a society that encourages toleration and respect, but rejection contradicts the principles of inclusion that define a democracy and its core moral values. How can we think ethically about religious violence and terrorism, especially in the wake of such atrocities as 9/11? Known for his skillful interrogation of ethical issues as they pertain to religion, politics, and culture, Richard B. Miller returns to the basic tenets of liberalism to divine an ethical response to religious extremism. He questions how we should think about the claims and aspirations of political religions, especially when they conflict so deeply with liberal norms and practices, and he suggests how liberal critics can speak confidently in ways that respect cultural and religious difference. Miller explores other concerns within these investigations as well, such as the protection of human rights and a liberal democratic commitment to multicultural politics. In relating religion and ethics, he develops a new lens for viewing political religions and their moral responsibilities. This probing inquiry also forces us to rethink our response to 9/11.

Review

Terror, Religon, and Liberal Thought is a volume with plenty to consider, a key addition to any political science collection.

(Midwest Book Review)

Miller offers readers a brilliant exercise in liberal social criticism, which stands firmly at the crossroads of moral theory, political philosophy, and pragmatic cultural criticism...it stands heads above many recent works on religion, violence, and terrorism in its thoughtful application of the tools of social criticism.

(Choice)

Review

Terror, Religion, and Liberal Thought is an outstanding work. Its discussion ranges widely and comfortably in diverse areas of scholarly inquiry—religion, politics, morality, political violence, and social criticism. The book is also courageous, neither apologetic nor ideological.

(Gabriel Palmer-Fernandez, Youngstown State University)

Terror, Religion, and Liberal Thought is a judicious application of the main values of the liberal tradition to a moral evaluation of and response to 9/11 and intercultural critique. Both are significantly informed by robust and nuanced understandings of respect for persons, toleration, and equality in a multicultural world, as well as human rights more generally.

(Sumner Twiss, Florida State University)

A key addition to any political science collection
By Midwest Book Review
The liberal mindset is commonly associated with diplomacy and rationality when facing our enemies, two values which are thrown aside when faced with an imminent danger. "Terror, Religion, and Liberal Thought" analyzes the liberal political philosophy and comes to treat it as a religion all its own. Richard B Miller, a student of ethics and critic of issues relating to religion and politics, offerings an intriguing insight to attitudes on all sides of liberalism and religion. Also critical to America's response to 9/11, "Terror, Religion, and Liberal Thought" is a volume with plenty to consider, a key addition to any political science collection.

An ad for his Lightning Process--based on insecurity?
By Tea
Full disclosure: I've only read 75% of this book and am probably not going to finish it. It's poorly written, poorly planned, and based in insecurity.

Parker spends pages and chapters haranguing you about how you have to believe that there's a mind/body connection. (OK, OK, I do.)

He includes zillions of testimonials but they all scrupulously omit any description of his process.

He includes a whole aggrieved chapter trying to refute the bad things people have said about him on the Internet. (Phil, honey, just a hint: If no one is saying bad things about you on the Internet, it's probably because no one is talking about you there at all.)

My main difficulty, though, is that the book is pretty much an ad for his course, yet he says almost nothing concrete about it. Unfortunately, given that it's expensive and requires traveling somewhere, and that his customer base is largely people who have CFS/ME who can neither get around well nor earn a living any more, this seems mean-spirited at best and devious at worst. He seems to believe that any wheelchair-bound person can leave their children behind, dig up an attendant to travel with them at any time, and drop quite a bit of money, simply on his repeated assertions that it will all be OK as long as they believe. (Come on, Tinkerbelle!)

It's too bad because I can agree with the one thing he does say, that CFS may involve a bad feedback loop which produces constant physical-emergency responses in the body. But a good premise doesn't automatically translate into a good treatment.

I have no doubt (with insecurity positively reeking from the pages) that part of Parker's fears involve others stealing his methods. But he needs to recognize that more fully describing his methods is merely showing basic respect to those with limited resources of cash and energy. Other practitioners of various types describe their methods fully and still fill seminars, since written material and personal guidance really aren't the same.

Perhaps Mr. Parker needs to take his own process (which he claims also helps OCD, perfectionism, and fear of failure--surely it could help insecurity?) and then rewrite this book. As it is, my disappointment with its skimpiness ends up suggesting I'll also be disappointed with a skimpy course.

The Opera Fanatic: Ethnography of an Obsession, by Claudio E. Benzecry

Though some dismiss opera as old-fashioned, it shows no sign of disappearing from the world’s stage. So why do audiences continue to flock to it? Given its association with wealth, one might imagine that opera tickets function as a status symbol. But while a desire to hobnob with the upper crust might motivate the occasional operagoer, for hardcore fans the real answer, according to The Opera Fanatic, is passion—they do it for love.

Opera lovers are an intense lot, Claudio E. Benzecry discovers in his look at the fanatics who haunt the legendary Colón Opera House in Buenos Aires, a key site for opera’s globalization. Listening to the fans and their stories, Benzecry hears of two-hundred-mile trips for performances and nightlong camp-outs for tickets, while others testify to a particular opera’s power to move them—whether to song or to tears—no matter how many times they have seen it before. Drawing on his insightful analysis of these acts of love, Benzecry proposes new ways of thinking about people’s relationship to art and shows how, far from merely enhancing aspects of everyday life, art allows us to transcend it.

Review
Winner of the Mary Douglas Prize for Best Book in the Sociology of Culture, given by ASA, 2012.Award blurb: "The Opera Fanatic is a beautiful book.  A work of art as well as intellect, it conveys to its readers not just the fans' passionate love for their opera but also the author's love of his subject and his passion for understanding."

"A sociologist's book documents the true face of opera fandom. I'd love to see an opera guide that depicts the world of opera as Benzecry's subjects experience it: a place of gossip and passion and temperamental celebrities and cathartic music, none of it requiring any specialized knowledge whatsoever." Anne Midgette, The Washington Post.

"The study of such a peculiar world needed to be conducted and published. It has been done in Argentina- a very particular context- and through really outstanding work. Now, inspired by it, it is on us, particularly in Europe, to keep delving in the profile of the opera fanatic." Jean-Philippe Thielay- NonFiction.Fr  "One of the ten major theory books since 2000... Benzecry's vision of socially prepared solitude opens a way for sociology to do justice to the things people love." Randall Collins, University of Pennsylvania

What makes a fan a fan? What pushes a person past an affection for a certain something--a football team, or comic books, or a certain band--into a real, genuine, overpowering love? I'm convinced the answer lies somewhere in Claudio Benzecry's The Opera Fanatic: Ethnography of an Obsession. KIRKUS REVIEWS.

"The Opera Fanatic is a wonderfully eyeopening work that draws us into the complex world of the opera fanatic in Buenos Aires. Thoughtfully crafted and vividly written, it will appeal to a wide audience and be an excellent addition to courses on culture, social psychology, and qualitative methods." American Journal of Sociology

"In this imaginative and deeply researched study, Benzecry provides a powerful alternative to the notion that people engage culture to gain distinction over others. He shows that meaning and passion are central, that people are looking for transcendence, and that opera feels like love. This theoretically sophisticated work will help to change the conversation about cultural consumption."--Jeffrey C. Alexander, Yale University

--Jeffrey C. Alexander

"The wonder of "The Opera Fanatic" is that nobody wrote this book before. An ethnography of opera fans in the Buenos Aires area, this study pinpoints a phenomenon that is worldwide in scope today. Challenging the common sociological wisdom that attending high-culture events expresses the need to establish class distinctions and to build cultural capital, Benzecry provides a convincing alternative model of operagoing that, at least for a sizable public, portrays this activity as affective, quasi-religious, and addictive."--Herbert Lindenberger, Stanford University

--Herbert Lindenberger

"Opera inspires passionate responses among audiences. This engaging, subtle book explains how one society shapes those passions. For Benzecry, operagoing in turn illuminates experiences of national honor, of belonging to a city, and of local loyalty to others. Wit and pleasure are not usually found in works of sociology, but they overflow these pages."--Richard Sennett, New York University

Excellent Ethnography of Fandom
By Dunamis
The point of Benzecry's book is not to simply talk about opera fanatics or give examples of them. Instead, Benzecry explains opera fandom. His astute ethnography, which emerges from years of field work in the Colon Opera House, explains to the reader how and why opera, slated as a 'dying' art, has continued to generate a fan base. He does this not by cataloging 'great operas', but rather, for example, by showing 1) how the social disposition of fandom is cultivated and supported, particularly as "passion" in the upper decks of the opera house and 2) the relationship of the social history of opera in Buenos Aires to the cultivation of this disposition. In this sense, there is not a more thorough EXPLANATION and INTERPRETATION of opera fandom. Anyone interested in any form of fandom would benefit from Benzecry's perceptive and intellectually rigorous analysis.

Bravo!
By Amy G Dala
Dr. Benzecry's thoughtful ethnography of opera fans in Buenos Aries is detailed, rich, and thought provoking. As I read about entranced listeners who cast aside other sources of self-worth and personal values to rush headlong into the arias and wonder of the opera, I felt that I was right there, along with them at the Colon, witnessing Rigoletto. We learn about everything from the seating arrangements to the political strikes that swirl around the field. Reading this book brings you closer to understanding opera, yes, but it also brings you to the heart of seemingly irrational love to get a sense for other forms of fandom as well. The book mentions the big stars and figures, but Benzecry speaks of the people in the upper decks as well: Luis, Irma, and Franco. Maria Callas and the big names are there, but it's the experiences and feelings of Luis, Irma, and Franco that gives The Opera Fanatic it's heft. Bravo.

From Publishers Weekly
Blake draws a powerful portrait of a mother who will risk everything, including imprisonment, to save her eight-year-old daughter's life in the fourth installment of her Louisiana Gentlemen series (after Roan). Janna Kerr's daughter, Lainey, has end-stage renal disease and will die if she doesn't receive a kidney transplant. In desperation, Janna turns to a doctor who deals in black-market human organs and moves Lainey to a secluded fishing camp owned by her friend, Denise, a member of the Benedict clan of Turn-Coupe, La., to await the shady doctor's summons. A short while later, Clay Benedict shows up at Janna's door to check on the new guests. Janna, for reasons never made entirely clear to the reader, drugs Clay and ties him to the bed. It doesn't take long for Clay to realize that Lainey is his deceased twin brother's child or to fall in love with his adorable niece and her mother. When two teenaged boys are found murdered, their vital organs harvested, Janna begins to understand the price that she has agreed to pay for her daughter's life. At times, this poignant tale treads the fine line between drama and melodrama, but the lush setting of the Louisiana marshlands and Blake's vivid prose will send newcomers back to the shelves to pick up the first three books of the series.

Desperate times call for desperate measures, and Janna Kerr is nothing if not desperate. If she doesn’t do something soon, her eight-year-old daughter, Lainey, will die of renal disease. Lainey has been on a waiting list for a kidney for more than two years, but each time a potential donor has been found, the match has proved to be incompatible. Just when Janna decides to get a kidney for her daughter from less-than-official channels, she runs into Clay Benedict. Lainey is the result of a romantic liaison with Clay’s twin brother, Matt. He never knew about Lainey and died in an accident. Now Janna will do anything to see to it that her daughter lives, even if it means tying up Clay and keeping him prisoner. This hardcover reprint of one of Blake’s Louisiana Gentlemen contemporary romances will win over a new batch of fans with its strong sense of place, emotion-driven plotting, and compellingly crafted characters. --John Charles

My romreadtoday.com review for Clay
By A Customer
A simple favor turns into a huge nightmare for Clay Benedict, the youngest of four boys from the powerful Benedict family. Clay agrees to help his cousin, Denise, by checking on her friend, Janna Kerr, who is staying in Denise's secluded fishing camp. Unbeknownst to Clay, Janna has ulterior motives and secretly drugs his coffee. Once he is unconscious, Janna moves him to her spare bedroom before tying him up.
When Clay wakes up and discovers he is being held prisoner, he figures Janna is hiding something. As he becomes closer to Janna's precocious young daughter, Lainey, Clay finds himself looking into the eyes of a Benedict, but whose child is she? As the situation unfolds, Clay learns Lainey has End Stage Renal Disease and there is little hope unless a transplant is found soon. No matter the cost, Janna is determined to keep her child alive until a kidney can be found on the black market. When a dead body is found in the bayou, Janna realizes she may be in over her head.
Admittedly, I have other Benedict books waiting upstairs on my bookshelf; I kept putting them aside. What a huge mistake! CLAY is fast-paced and toe curling. I fell in love with Clay and his brothers; each has his own story either previously released or in the works. Clay is honest, caring and does not take grief from anyone. His dialogue with Lainey is heartwarming and genuine, the ideal man/child relationship, while the passion roaring between Clay and Janna adds a strong romance to the already stunning story! Janna, on the other hand, seemed a bit naïve and acted before thinking. Janna's carelessness was a good match with Clay's steadfast attitude.
Suspense fans will adore this story; the action picks up rapidly and had me flipping pages as fast as I could! Now I can't wait to work my way through the other brother's stories- KANE 3/98, LUKE 2/99, ROAN 7/00 and the upcoming WADE 9/02.

An enjoyable romance
By A Customer
Eight years old Lainey Kerr is dying unless a kidney transplant occurs quite soon. Her desperate mother Janna turns to black market Doctor Gower, a dealer in illegal organs. Janna moves into a remote Bayou cabin owned by a friend Denise who sends her cousin Clay Benedict to insure the safety of her guests.
Janna, fearing Clay will interfere when Gower summons her especially if he realizes who her daughter is, drugs his coffee. Clay awakens to find himself tied up with Lainey looking at him. He concludes he was drugged but not sure why and the little girl staring at him has to be the daughter of his deceased twin Matt. Clay soon realizes how far Janna will go to save Lainey and how much he wants to help her and his niece, but the murders of two boys for their organs make the price exorbitant and real to both adults.
Jennifer Blake asks how far will the reader go to save the life of a loved one. Will an individual willingly allow murder to reap body parts for a life saving transplant? Those ethic questions confront Janna, who wonders if she is Faust having sold her soul to the devil? The story line is thought provoking though the manner in which Lainey was hidden from her relatives (Matt dies while Janna is pregnant and his father dies after threatening her) seems unnecessary overkill, but does not take away from the tale. Readers will find CLAY filled with a complex moral dilemma that not only showcases Ms. Blake's talent, but also will send the audience seeking the first three novels of this series.

So Unbelievable...!!
By A Customer
Can anyone imagine a small adult female kidnapping and tying up a big hunk?? I could not! The premise of this story was too much of a stretch. Amazing as I found ROAN was a fantastic story! The heroine waffled from one plan to another and all of them were way out in "left field" I have completed all the Benedict books - sorry this one was so disappointing!

Trite dialogue, overly circuitous plot, dull as dishwater
By R. Hofmann
I guess if you don't mind those things, you'll love this book. I personally could not finish it. I got to the last couple chapters and sai to myself, "Do I really want to cart this book on my cruise and finish it?" Answer: "It's not worth the effort."

Romantic suspense with plenty of plot twists and surprises!
By Valerie Matteson
Daria and Briana (Bree) Devon own Two Mermaids Marine Search and Salvage Shop in Turtle Bay, Florida which they operate along with Manual (Manny) Salazar. Daria and Briana have been asked by the Clear the Gulf Commission to keep an eye on some pollutant-endangered sea grass and marine life. Bree was taking pictures underwater while her sister remained in the boat. The water became murkier as a storm was coming up to Bree surfaces to find both the "Mermaid II", their boat, gone and Daria as well. The waves are bad but being only four miles out and not too far from a small island, Bree has to swim for it so she goes underwater first using up all her air in her tank and then sheds tank, weight belt, camera and strobe light. Thunder and lightning begin and even as she begins to reach an island accompanied by bull sharks a blast of something hits Bree and she screams and blacks out.

Cole De Roca was out sailing when he takes shelter on a small island and beaches his boat. He hears the scream and goes along the beach to find Briana whom he met once is face down and unconscious. Cole uses his radio to call the Coast Guard but is forced back into the water with Bree on his boat to get her to land and a hospital.

Why did Daria and their boat disappear? How do all the politicians and rivals, friends and relatives such as Daria and Bree's older sister Amelia fit into this mystery?

Exciting story but a few minor plot holes. Recommended.

Really bad...
By Can't Stop Reading
I agree with the other reviewer that said it wasn't worth finishing. I kept trying to get into it - but the plot and dialogue were so awful I just couldn't finish. Just not a good book.
