This book will join my vast collection of Uncle John's readers. It's packed with all kinds of organic/green information. Uncle John's format of short, fact filled articles is great. I'm glad I purchased this book.

Pleasantly surprised

Received this book as a holiday gift, and my initial reaction was that it seemed gimmicky. But after reading it I have to say that it was one of the better gifts I got last year! It contains a number of good tips and suggestions for going green, and lots of interesting facts, historical anecdotes, and information about nature, wildlife, and sustainability. It covers a wide range of subjects, and each section is a quick and fun read. The writing is light and "easy to digest." I recommend this book (makes a great gift!).

Conservation,The Green Movement,Recycle,Global Warming using less,stop pollution,save energy,more efficient everything,solar panels,windmills,reduce fossil fuel use,save the forests,electric cars,fluorescent light bulbs replacing incandescent,Organic foods,Enviromental Protection Agency,getting rid of plastic bags ,reduce garbage going into landfills,carbon footprints,and on and on are terms that have been swamping us for decades now.But what do they all mean,who and what is behind it all,what is one to believe or is a lot of it nonsense or wishful thinking? Opposing views are everywhere ;all kinds of money is involved,be it government grants for studies,as well as money for research and development and even manufacture.Then there are those massive amounts spent on articles in media,and an endless stream of books on every subject imaginable.
So what is one to do,who to believe,what to buy;that is the question.
Well,Uncle John and the Bathroom Readers Institute have taken on the immense task of trying to inform you about all these things and I think they have done a super job of it all.
In all these subjects,there is massive information and misinformation.Some ideas are valid and others are nothing but self serving agenda.
As I read through this reader,I found much of what I already knew,and much of opposing views and much slanted information.
However,Uncle John has made an excellent job of "sorting the wheat from the chasff";and tries to deal with the best valid information on each subject.
After reading this edition of the Bathroom Reader;you may not know all the answers,but for sure,you will be much better informed and be better equipped to make choices in the future.

She provides compelling evidence of the benefits of having children later--by birth or by adoption. Gregory reveals that large numbers of women succeed in having children between 35 and 44 by the usual means (one in seven kids born today has a mom in that age range), and that many of those who don’t succeed nonetheless find alternate routes to happy families via egg donation or adoption. And they’re glad they waited. In this upbeat, sometimes self-congratulatory book, University of Houston professor Gregory looks at the benefits of waiting until later in life to have children. Recent front-page studies citing a rise in infertility have instilled a sense of emergency in women who put off having children until they have established careers and chosen the right father—or perhaps eschewed the need for one. Gregory's palliative, informative study of 113 mothers between the ages of 35 and 56 (she doesn't share where they live, one failing of this work) reveals the rational motivations on the part of these mostly well-educated, professional women for waiting, as well as their varying success in getting pregnant. Married moms, single moms, gay moms, moms who had a baby by nature or with the help of technology or adoption—Gregory shares her happy discovery that most of these new later moms felt positive about their choices. Some of the reasons they cite in interviews include bringing more financial power and education to the nest, creating a strong family focus and the likelihood of a stable, peer marriage, enjoying a longer life expectancy and a general sense of self-confidence younger mothers may lack. Helpfully, Gregory debunks a lot of the hysterical statistics surrounding infertility and dispenses the wealth of pregnancy and adoption offerings with equanimity and good cheer. (Jan.)

we came a long way ... then, a baby!

I'm delighted to see a book on this topic with all the anecdotal evidence in the world that yes, sometimes late-in-life moms do have an edge over younger ones--more settled, wiser, richer, been there done that and everything else we needed to do to feel complete--except the biggie--motherhood. We may get gray hair sooner and emabarass our teens when the clerk at Abercrombie's thinks we're a grandparent not the parent, but I'm living it and loving it. Gregory gives compelling proof that this choice is not the huge risk it is often perceived to be. Our kids have kept us young(er) and more physically and mentally active than we might otherwise be had we decided that we had missed the boat. The book was also quite readable and not quite as academic a treatise as I had anticipated.

I will remember this book when I think of having kids

Although I am not a mother, I am a fan of the English department at University of Houston (my alma mater), go coogs!

I found this book to be a delightful, realistic outlook on the many roles and responsibilities of women in the United States. As a child raised by a single mother, I understand how having an older, educated mother can better enable one's children to be better prepared for the world's obstacles.

What a wonderful read! My friends are buying this book!

Empowering for Women with Careers

I am a married, 30 year old woman, with no kids (currently). I have been focused on my career since my early twenties and when I started having thoughts of babies I needed some guidance. This book is very empowering for older women looking to have a family. It is mostly a collection of stories from other women that have been in the same situation. This book covers married, single, lesbian and much older woman that are looking to, or have already, gotten pregnant. Don't expect this book to have in depth medical advice or any of that. It will show you that there are other women out there that have felt the same... and what they did about it. I really did love this book and have recommended it to several friends in their mid 30s thinking about having a first child or adding to their family.

Not useful for therapists

Very thin content. If you've been using positive psychology in your practice by incorporating research techniques then you're also going to find this handbook very disappointing. I was hoping for printable handouts but wish that I'd just purchased the Kindle version and saved some money. There's nothing but light over-views that are lacking. To me these authors don't have a practical working knowledge of the subject, it's like they've taken some research in the field and lacking that deeper working knowledge, have turned out some pages to sell based on what they've gleaned.

If you haven't studied positive psychology or kept current with the research then you'll most likely find some ideas helpful although I would recommend reading the material and research noted in the footnotes. For me this was a waste of time and $55.

I think that as a self-help book this could be very useful. If the author's had marketed this book as a self-help book I would it another star or two.

I can't believe this book is not getting more attention. If you want to do positive psychology therapy, this is the book. It lays out many week's worth of exercises and areas of discussion. Start with this and then add to it if you want to expand your knowledge and repertoire even more.

More Fringe? Yes, please

Even though I heard about the plans for it, I'd totally forgotten that the 'Fringe: Beyond the Fringe' comic series had even existed, so it came as something of a surprise when I realized this trade paperback compilation had just come out.

Parts of it make for fascinating reading (Joshua Jackson shouldn't quit his day job, God forbid, but he should also keep writing, good story!) and parts of it are just whimsical 'what-if' situations.

I enjoyed this volume quite a lot, even if I'm not the biggest comics/graphic novel fan in the universe.

Visually interesting in style, but also, they've got some stories to tell that are entertaining riffs on the sorts of weirdness that passes for normal in the Fringe universe.

If you're not (yet) familiar with Fringe, the tv show, by all means, get caught up on the dvds, but this is probably not a great place to start your explorations.

Season 1 should get you started nicely. Fringe: The Complete First Season

Fringe: Beyond the Fringe

Fringe: Beyond the Fringe, a graphic novel written by series star Joshua Jackson, is a great way to get back into the world of the TV show and explore the characters in alternate realities.

The first story, "Peter and the Machine," follows Peter (Jacksons' character) during his time between season three and four. As a "Fringie," reading these stories is an awesome way to delve deep into things we would not otherwise get to see. Since this is the last season of Fringe, it is nice to know that the world and characters we love will be able to live on in different ways.

The rest of the book tells fun "Imagine If...?" stories. We get the same characters we know and love, but in totally different situations from how we normally get to see them. "Imagine If Peter Never Died," "Imagine If Astrid was a Spy," "Imagine If Olivia and Peter had a Child with Cortexiphan Powers," "Imagine If Peter were a Superhero," "Imagine If Our Fringe Team were Criminals," "Imagine If Walter Outlived the Earth," "Imagine If Walter was in Violet Sedan Chair," and lastly "Ghost Writer." It is hard to pick a favorite because they are all so unique, but the one about Peter and Olivia's child had a sweet and surprise ending that my mushy heart could not ignore!

That being said, there was not a story I did not like. They were all so creative. There was drama mixed with comedy, and of course, sci-fi. And Fringe would not be Fringe without its Easter eggs. Tiny bits from the show are hidden in the pictures and jokes. The artists on this project should also be commended because without them, the story would just be in your imagination. Each story has a unique art style, bringing the words to life.

So if you are a fan, and I imagine you are if you are reading this, hurry and download the book to your Kindle, Nook or download and read on your PC/Mac. (You can also order a hardcopy and re-read it later!)

Loved this. Its a graphic novel, aka comic book, but its awesome. I love the show, and cant believe it ends tonight.

The content of the book was exactly what I was looking for and enjoyed it wholeheartedly. As for the condition of it, it was not in pristine condition as advertised. For one that collects Pierre Berton books it was a bit of a disappointment.

Berton is a master

There are few writers I would care to know. Many are surly, aloof and unapproachable. But Pierre Berton seems affable, approachable and very smart. I have read almost all of his books and, while I cannot recall the specifics of Drifting Home, it doesn't matter. ANYTHING by Berton is worth reading. He is smart, sharp, witty and as level-headed as they come. He writes beautifully and is a natural story-teller. What also comes across is his fierce pride in, and dedication to, Canada and her provinces. Born in the Yukon Territory, he traveled the world and finally settled in the outskirts of Toronto, Ontario. He wrote for Macleans and other publications, kept and active and lively presence on the radio and TV, and wrote books that celebrated Canadian life. There are few writers who can hold a candle to Berton. I have been enriched by his books. Highly, highly recommended.

A beautiful read if you love stories of the Canadian wilderness

I am an Australian reader and have just experiencd an amazing one month private bus tour right up through British Columbia , The Yukon and North West Territories travelling on the Alcan Highway and then the 900km gravel Dempster Highway right up to Inuvik and then on to Tuktoyaktuk by light plane - What an adventure! - in doing all this , I became immersed in Canadian history along the way - oh, the "romance" and hardship of it all from the Klondike Goldrush in 1898 to the hardships , even today , of living in such isolated and extreme conditions . We stayed in Whitehorse and Dawson City for a few days and this true story covered all the route covered in the story, although theirs by boat and mine by road . I was enthralled as those amazing rivers up there are what northern Canada is all about . You couldn't help but love this book , most especially if you have travelled, by any means , in this area . I purchased the book on Kindle and read it whilst on the trip , which added to my knowledge and great pleasure, of the whole experience.
The family love for each other so beautifully expressed by the author is very moving and truly binds the whole story and adventure togther . A very uplifting read indeed .

Not my first choice

A good book, but very dry to read. Also, most of it deals with British and the European Union laws. This is NOT a good book for someone trying to understand TS/TG. I did get some really good information out of it, but for the size and the cost, it would not be my first choice. There's other books out there that are better.
