Denver, Colorado, Monday, August 7

Liam Raven looked at the woman sleeping in the bed next to him and tried to remember her name. He vaguely recalled that she enjoyed snowboarding. He knew for certain that she was studying to be a nurse. Her name, however, escaped him.

He stared at the light filtering through the broken slats of the miniblinds and wondered how it came about that at thirty-five years of age—pushing thirty-six—he hadn't found a better way to spend his nights than sleeping with a woman he never planned to see again and whose name he couldn't remember.

His cell phone rang—his work number—saving him from delving too deeply into the murky depths of his psyche. He was grateful for the interruption. Self-analysis was guaranteed to give him nightmares but work, thank God, usually proved a reliable anesthetic.

He eased out of bed, flipping open his phone. Out of deference to the still-sleeping No-Name, he waited until he was in the living room before he responded. "This is Liam Raven."

"Thank God I reached you. This is Chloe Hamilton." The woman on the other end of the phone drew in an audible gulp of air but her voice still didn't steady. "Do you remember me? I came to see you a few months ago. I asked for your help in filing for a divorce—"

"I remember you well, Mrs. Hamilton." Even among Liam's client roster of rich and famous Coloradans, it would be hard to forget a woman who'd won medals in four Olympic skiing events and was married to the mayor of Denver. Not to mention the fact that Chloe Hamilton had the sort of lithe, athletic body guaranteed to provoke a major case of lust in any straight guy still breathing.

"We discussed ways to keep the proceedings confidential until the decree was granted," Liam said, letting Chloe know that he genuinely recalled their past dealings. "In the end, though, you decided to stay with your husband for the sake of your daughter. How can I help you, Mrs. Hamilton?"

"Jason's dead," she blurted out, her voice catching on a suppressed sob. "He's been…murdered."

The mayor of Denver had been murdered? Holy shit! Liam smothered the exclamation. "I'm very sorry to hear of your loss—"

"I was the person who found him. I came downstairs and he was lying on the floor in our basement media room. There was blood everywhere. All over the wall. All over the floor. God, it was terrible." Chloe's explanation erupted in short, staccato bursts and it sounded to Liam as if her teeth were chattering. "There was so much blood." Chloe's voice faded to a whisper. "My God, there was so much blood."

Liam spoke swiftly. "Have you notified the police? Called a doctor?" A doctor might be able to help Chloe, even if there was nothing to be done for her husband.

"The police think I killed him." The words tumbled out, harsh with fear. "I'm sure they're going to arrest me. I need a lawyer right away. I can't let them take me to jail, even for a couple of nights. Sophie's just lost…she's just lost her father. She can't lose me, too. She simply can't."

Sophie must be the name of Chloe's daughter. Liam had never seen the child and couldn't remember how old she was. A preschooler, he thought. Maybe three or four? He spoke quickly. "Are the police with you now?"

"Just a couple of uniformed officers guarding the crime scene and holding the reporters at bay. They've already taken away—" She broke off and started again. "They've already taken away Jason's body."

"Whatever you do, Mrs. Hamilton, don't say anything to the cops. Nothing, do you hear me? If they ask your name, you're obligated to identify yourself, but that's it. It doesn't matter how innocuous the police questions seem, don't answer them. In a murder case, the spouse and immediate family of the victim are often considered suspects. Unless you have a rock solid alibi—"

"I was here all night," Chloe said. "It must have happened…Jason must have been killed while I was sleeping."

She'd been sleeping—unless she'd killed him, Liam reflected cynically, but he kept any trace of skepticism out of his voice. "In the circumstances, you should assume you're currently the prime suspect, Mrs. Hamilton. It's nothing personal on the part of the authorities. Just routine police procedure in the early stages of an investigation."

"Their suspicions seem a lot more than routine to me." Yeah, well, most likely because the evidence pointed straight to her, Liam thought. However, that was beside the point. Guilty or innocent, his advice to Chloe Hamilton would remain the same: get a competent criminal lawyer and say nothing.

He spoke briskly. "In view of the fact that we're talking about the murder of a very prominent citizen, the police department will almost certainly send one or more of their senior detectives to question you some time soon. Whatever these detectives ask—even if it's something as simple as the date or the time of day—tell them you need to consult with your lawyer before responding. Got that?"

"Yes, I understand. But I guess it's too late for that piece of advice. I already answered a ton of questions about what happened last night."

Liam shook his head, groaning inwardly. He was constantly amazed at the way even sophisticated and well educated people failed to take advantage of their right to remain silent in the wake of a crime. He attempted to reassure her anyway. Right now it wouldn't help to add to Chloe's stress level by telling her she'd screwed up, big time.

"There's probably no real harm done." For her daughter's sake, he hoped that wasn't a complete lie. If you really wanted to mess up a kid, he couldn't think of a much better way than having one parent murder the other. Growing up with your mom in prison wasn't exactly calculated to make for a picture-perfect childhood, either.

"Make sure you don't answer any more questions until you have legal counsel right there with you, okay?"

"Okay. I understand."

"Do you have a pencil and paper?"

"I must have, I guess." Her voice trailed off and he could visualize her staring vaguely around the room, still too much in shock to register her surroundings with any degree of clarity. He was surprised at how sharp his mental images of Chloe were. Apparently she'd made even more of an impression on him four months ago than he'd realized.

"There must be a pencil somewhere," she muttered.

"You definitely need to find something to write with. I'll hold while you look."

It was a full minute before Chloe picked up the phone again. "Thank you for waiting, Mr. Raven. I'm sorry. I'm not usually this disorganized. I have a pen now."

"Write down this phone number and office address. It's for a friend of mine, Bill Schuller. Bill is an outstanding criminal defense attorney and you need to call him before the police question you again."

"But I don't want Bill Schuller to be my lawyer!" Chloe protested. "I want you to represent me. That's why I called. Mr. Raven, please, you have to help me."

"I am helping you. Trust me on this. Bill Schuller is the best criminal trial lawyer in Denver—"

"No, you're the best. Everyone says so. You won an acquittal for Sherri Norquist when the experts all predicted you were going to lose."

Liam's stomach knotted at the mention of Sherri's name, and he was immediately angry with himself for reacting to a case—and a woman—that were now more than three years in his past. He'd been a complete idiot over Sherri Norquist. He'd allowed himself to be manipulated into falling in love with a murdering bitch. But hey, shit happens. It was time to move on. God knew, Sherri certainly had, and seemingly without the smallest trace of guilt or regret.

He spoke crisply, skilled by now at keeping a barrier between his outward demeanor and what he was really feeling. "I appreciate the compliment, Mrs. Hamilton, but it's undeserved. The bottom line is that I just happened to make a big splash with a couple of my early cases. I haven't practiced as a criminal defense attorney in several years. These days, I deal only with divorce cases." Which not only kept him away from an unsavory assortment of accused murderers, drug dealers and armed robbers, but provided him with the added pleasure of saying a mental fuck you to his bigamist father every time he took on a new case or signed off on a completed one. Liam understood that many worse things could happen to a kid than discovering his father had two wives, and two separate families. And he hadn't even been a kid, really, when he learned the truth about his father's second family. Still, his disdain for his father ran deep; even the fact that Ron Raven had recently been murdered hadn't put an end to his anger.

He brought his attention back to Chloe. "You need to call Bill Schuller, before the police come back to question you again, Mrs. Hamilton. And keep in mind that the cops aren't joking around when they warn you that anything and everything you say can be used as evidence against you. Here's Bill's office phone number. Call him right now, before you do anything else. It's important." He reeled off the number, repeated his condolences on Jason Hamilton's death and hung up before Chloe could protest any further.

Just as he finished the conversation with Chloe, No-Name came out of the bedroom, wrapped in a towel. She looked sleepy-eyed, cute and appallingly young. Jesus, what had he been thinking last night? Or not thinking, more like it, Liam reflected grimly.

"Oh, you're still here," she said, smiling in relief. "I was afraid you'd left already."

"No, I'm still here, but only just. I was answering the phone and didn't want to disturb you." He returned her smile with all the warmth he could muster. No-Name couldn't be much more than twenty-one, which would make her almost fifteen years his junior. There was still an appealing hint of hopeful innocence in her expression and he felt a sharp twinge of remorse for having exploited her naiveté. He had years of experience in developing pickup lines that worked, and she'd fallen for them all. True, he'd met her in a LoDo bar notorious as Casual Sex Centra...

Better the Second Time Around
By Rosa
Suspect was much better than Missing. The story starts with Chloe Hamilton who's charge with killing her husband Jason Hamilton. Chloe wants Liam Raven to defend her against the murder charge. Liam is of course apprehensive than is until he finds out he fathered Sophie Hamilton their daughter. There's a lot of twists and turns and just when you have things figured out. The rug is pulled from underneath. if you were disappointed by Missing you will find redemption in Suspect. I hope we will find out what happens to Avery Fairfax in Payback.

Not her best
By Jorge Frid
Albeit this book has almost nothing to do with the first one. The few things it has are the gist of this story. This book is awfully better than the first one but is not the best JC's work. I'll read the next of the series but without reading it I think that this series is a notch down by the standard of this writer.

exciting romantic suspense thriller
By A Customer
Being a divorce lawyer Liam Raven is skeptical when it comes to relationships. However, his affluent father's bigamy stuns even cynical Liam who had believed he heard everything from couples. Apparently his dad Ron had a household here in Wyoming and one in Atlanta for twenty-five years with kids in both cities. While his families, the Ravens and the Fairfaxes, are in the media fish bowl, Ron is MISSING.

Liam is elated to have a client Chloe Hamilton to distract him from his family issues as he has no idea how to help his distraught mom or his sister although the latter seems to have found a distraction in of all people a Fairfax. Chloe expects to be charged with first degree murder of her spouse, Denver Mayor Jason Hamilton. However, the case ties back to his family as the victim was a business crony of Ron's partner and apparent the other brother-in-law Paul Fairfax. As Liam fights his attraction to his client, he obsesses with proving her innocence by seeking the real culprit.

Although lawyers acting like investigators especially on a capital case seem a stretch, readers will enjoy the exciting romantic suspense thriller SUSPECT, the second Ravens and Fairfaxes tale. The story line is action-packed and fast-paced as Liam and Chloe fall in love while he does field work to uncover the killer's identity. As these type of cases are emotionally draining on lawyers without falling in love and take up enormous amounts of time (except in Texas), romantic suspense fans will appreciate the strong tale due to the fine lead characters, but also know his actions seem implausible. Still this is a fun thriller and PAYBACK is coming.

In Overcoming Your Child's Shyness and Social Anxiety, child psychologists Lucy Willetts and Cathy Creswell explain how parents can help a shy child learn to challenge their thoughts and behaviour patterns and learn to participate confidently in every aspect of their lives. Based on clinically proven cognitive behavioural principles, the book explains what causes shyness, how to identify social anxiety in your child (sometimes masked by anger or stubbornness) and how to gradually help your child face their anxieties and develop problem-solving strategies. This book is a must for parents, teachers and anyone working with children.

A great sequel
By JVib
I have read the original Convict Conditioning by Paul Wade and was very impressed. I implemented the routines and have had great success so far.

Personally I found Convict Conditioning 2 just as good as the first. I have already incorporated the grip progression, the human flag progression, the calf progression and the trifecta into my routine. I am holding off on the neck progression until I am more advanced in my bridge progression.

The information from part 3 and the bonus chapter is interesting but will have little to no impact on my current diet/lifestyle.

Bottom Line: In my humble opinion section 1 & 2 of the book make it worth the price for anyone who is a fan of the original Convict Conditioning.

P.S. Yes I would buy a 3rd book on Survival athletics & dynamics (as mentioned in the book).

3/5/13 update: Soon after writing this review I discontinued the exercises from CC2. As advised in the book, I am waiting until I've mastered pushups, pull ups, squats, and leg raises from CC1 before I start. You have to be very strong to handle many of the exercises in this book and I am certain I will reach that level of strength from the routines provide in CC1.

3/25/2015 update: I really got serious with the human flag training over the past 3 months and have reached the point where I can do the tucked version (but I’m not perfectly horizontal, just a bit lower) and hold it for 8-10 seconds. My grip strength is fantastic. I am currently doing 1 arm bar hangs for 10-20 second holds along with plenty of finger tip push-ups.

11/30/2015 Quick Update: Human flags are coming along nicely. I am very close to a full human flag, I just need to raise my body up by about 6 more inches.

6/10/2016 update: Due to a shoulder injury (not related to working out) I had to take a break from human flag training. I should be back to working towards a full flag soon. I am installing a fence poll in my basement just to have better access year round to train.

It works.
By Caranthir Telemnar
I've bought both, Convict Conditioning and Convict Conditioning 2.
First I was a little concerned about the price.

But now I own the books since beginning of March.
I do my regular workout on the basis of three sources:
- Be Your Own Gym (Mark Lauren)
- Core Performance and Core Performance Essentials (Mark Verstegen)
- Convict Conditioning 1 + 2

I take the basis program out of Core Performance.
Replace all device dependend exercises with ones out of 'Be Your Own Gym' and take the major ideas of periodization out of it.
To generate brute strength Convict was the missing link. So I replaced the strength circuit of Core Performance in an intelligent manner with the exercises of Convict.

My intention was to change over to body weight training completely to fixe my back and shoulder pain this way.
I was and I am successfull - I think due to the more natural movement in some cases.

I do my workout in our garden every day.
So every device I pull out of the garage I have to put back afterwards.
Avoiding this, my kind of training now requires a minimum of equipment.

Also I wanted to have a training program for years without boring every-day-stuff.
My training now has lots of variety, it's interesting every day.

The book describes "only" six major exercises.
This six exercises are enough to transform your whole body,
The book tells why the "big six" are enough.
Each exercise has 10 steps of progression.
Each progression step has at least three levels - this means: number of reps.

The first progression step of each exercise can really be done by any human beeing no matter if you're 8 or 80.
The author tells you how to work through the exercises step by step, level by level.
He is quite clear in giving criterions to proceed to the next level.
He gives some kind of rudimental plans - this is why I fall back to other sources for means of periodization.
The 10th progession state - phuu.... well, I don't know anyone in person who is able to press out even one single rep in good shape. But I'm heading for it - the eighth or so is also not really bad.

But the most important advice in Convict is to be patient.
I fully agree.

Followed by: Just start. Stop excusing.
Do your workout regularily. Increase intensity gently.
You will get strong rather fast, if your slow and patient enough.
Otherwise you may suffer from any pain.
Be reasonable.

Last but not least the book is written in a kind of sloppy way - assume you won't put it aside as long as you haven't read the whole thing.
It's really motivating !!

So thanks to the author, whoever Paul (the Coach) Wade really is.
This stuff works. At least for me.
Hence it's worth every EURO and Cent I paid for it.

Remark:
I really hope I was able to make myself clear.
I'm not a native speaker.
So please come back if you have questions or remarks.
Thank you.

Great book!
By Michael
Convict Conditioning 2 is a great book. This book pick up where CC1 left off. In this book you'll learn how to strengthen the weak spots in your body (forearms, grip, calves and neck). You will also receive instructions on flexibility exercises and the vision of Paul Wade about nutrition.

To apply the CC's and CC2's routine in your life, you'll need patience to see the results, but you can sleep damn sure that, if you put the time and effort needed, you will have results that will last for your entire life.

If you can, please search for the Convict Conditioning FAQ and Convict Conditioning CHARTS (I found on Scribd). This 2 PDF files answered a loot of questions that I had about the implementation of the routine.

Also, I highly recommend that you buy the Convict Conditioning (the first book) BEFORE you buy this book.

Last advice, DO NOT "workout" to get fit. Workout with a specific goal in mind. Perform 1x5 One-Arm Handstand Push-up, is an excelent goal. ;)

Ps: Sorry for my english, I'm not a native speaker.

The Lives They Left Behind: Suitcases from a State Hospital Attic, by Darby Penney, Peter Stastny

“The Lives They Left Behind is a deeply moving testament to the human side of mental illness, and of the narrow margin which so often separates the sane from the mad. It is a remarkable portrait, too, of the life of a psychiatric asylum—the sort of community in which, for better and for worse, hundreds of thousands of people lived out their lives. Darby Penney and Peter Stastny’s careful historical (almost archaeological) and biographical reconstructions give us unique insight into these lives which would otherwise be lost and, indeed, unimaginable to the rest of us.” —Oliver Sacks

“Fascinating. . . . The haunting thing about the suitcase owners is that it’s so easy to identify with them.” —Newsweek

When Willard State Hospital closed its doors in 1995, after operating as one of New York State’s largest mental institutions for over 120 years, a forgotten attic filled with suitcases belonging to former patients was discovered. Using the possessions found in these suitcases along with institutional records and doctors’ notes from patient sessions, Darby Penney, a leading advocate of patients’ rights, and Peter Stastny, a psychiatrist and documentary filmmaker, were able to reconstruct the lives of ten patients who resided at Willard during the first half of the twentieth century.

The Lives They Left Behind tells their story. In addition to these human portraits, the book contains over 100 photographs as well as valuable historical background on how this state-funded institution operated. As it restores the humanity of the individuals it so poignantly evokes, The Lives They Left Behind reveals the vast historical inadequacies of a psychiatric system that has yet to heal itself.

From Publishers Weekly
When New York's 120-plus-year-old mental institution Willard State Hospital was closed down in 1995, New York Museum curator Craig Williams found a forgotten attic filled with suitcases belonging to former inmates. He informed Penney, co-editor of The Snail's Pace Review and a leading advocate of patients rights, who recognized the opportunity to salvage the memory of these institutionalized lives. She invited Stastny, a psychiatrist and documentary filmmaker, to help her curate an exhibit on the find and write this book, which they dedicate to "the Willard suitcase owners, and to all others who have lived and died in mental institutions." What follows are profiles of 10 individual patients whose suitcase contents proved intriguing (there were 427 bags total), referencing their institutional record-including histories and session notes-as well as some on-the-ground research. A typical example is Ethel Smalls, who likely suffered from post-traumatic stress disorder as a result of her husband's abuse; misdiagnosed and institutionalized against her will, she lived at Willard until her death in 1973. While the individual stories are necessarily sketchy, the cumulative effect is a powerful indictment of healthcare for the mentally ill. 25 color and 63 b&w photographs.

Could Have Been So Much More...
By B. Bielen
I was gravely disappointed by this book. What could have been a unique, enlightening, and fascinating piece of work was simplified beyond belief, full of opinions instead of research, and really did far less justice to the individuals profiled than the author appeared to believe.

And...ok, this is an extreme pet peeve of mine...the editing was terrible. What it is lately about editing that has become so difficult? And we're not even talking about true editing, just simply making certain there are no typos and that form and grammar are correct. This was so poorly done it was painful to read.

I had looked forward to this book for some time, so I was very disappointed when I got through the first ten or so pages and realized it really wasn't for the thoughtful reader who wants solid research behind a story. No, it was a quick read for a non-critical thinker that likes to be hand-fed polemics.

Sorry.

Interesting, but disappointing
By I. Detest-Neiklot, J.R.
I bought this book primarily thinking that it would be an even-handed exercise in sociology and amateur archaeology. As someone who really enjoys exploring abandoned buildings and postulating on the things people "leave behind" to be forgotten and then found again, I was really excited about the idea of finding out more about the lives of actual mental patients during the period of widespread institutionalization. Overall, my reaction to this book was mixed.

First of all, the authors of this book take a very strong anti-asylum tone. While it stands to reason that conditions in the asylums at the time were far from what would be considered acceptable today, no comparison is made nor information given as to how Willard compared to other asylums at the time. Furthermore, the authors shed very little light on the condition of psychology as it existed in the 1930s, 40s, and 50s. Other than arguing that a culture prevailed which encouraged a maintenance of the status quo in order for the hospitals to exploit the free labor of the patients, little insight is given (and even this argument is weakly made).

Another problem that I found with this book is that very little information is given on how the details of the lives of these people were acquired. While some of the information is explicitly drawn from the case files as well as interviews with workers at the asylum, the narratives are filled with holes in which the authors posit a number of intriguing, but unsupported theories. An example of this may be seen in a description of someone as being "close to her family" due to the fact that she had personal phone numbers in her possessions. Likewise, on several occasions the book posits that a patient may not have been popular or easy to get along with, due to the frequency of her changing address. While certainly one possibility, such assertions are made continuously on a whole variety of subjects with what appears to be scant grounding.

Generally, the portrayal of health care the authors seek to portray is one which is callous, cold, unsympathetic, and deliberately exploitative. Generally, the people analyzed by the authors are portrayed as being generally normal, ordinary people- who through some quirk, a high degree of emotional stress, or even sinister machinations- were involuntarily warehoused in a sort of prison which only worsened their condition. The symptoms of the patients are presented in a curious, detached sort of way, and at no time do the authors raise any questions with regards to what sorts of conditions the patients may actually have had, or that they were genuinely suffering from serious mental disorders. While some of this may certainly be true, the positions of the authors- that people were incarcerated for decades in mental hospitals simply for becoming upset in public or trying to talk with the president-- seems unlikely.

When the man in question is arrested by the Secret Service and sent to a mental hospital for trying to see the president, the authors postulate that the Ukranian man was just misunderstood and didn't realize that one does not simply walk into the White House to meet the president. The fact that he refers to himself as Jesus Christ in his interviews is not seen to be a sign of mental disorders, so much as an unusual way of expressing his personal innocence. While this is all very psycho-analytical, it does very little to explain how a handful of doctors-- faced with overcrowding and deteriorating facilities-- would have been unable to see the misunderstanding and let him go instead of keeping him locked up for 30+ years.

Furthermore, the book is compounded by a number of factual errors. For example, in describing the arrival of a Ukranian national to the hospital, the authors refer to the armies of tanks which fought in the Ukraine in 1940 after the Germans had pushed past Leningrad (for the record, the Germans did not invade until 1941 and Leningrad is in Russia, on the opposite side of the country from the Ukraine). Likewise a half-French, half-Italian woman is described as coming from countries from which there were "few immigrants to the United States."

Overall, this book is an interesting look at the lives of people held in almost permanent sequestering inside a mental hospital. However, given the ideological bent of the writers, one cannot help but feeling as though the tragic lives of these people are being filled in or "colored" in order to make a case for the elimination of in-patient mental health care.

I was so disappointed.. I would like to profess this by ...
By Marie Hein Christiansen
I was so disappointed..

I would like to profess this by saying, that I looked very much forward to reading this book, and was extremely exited, when it first arrived in the mail.

However. Halfway through the first chapter, I started getting a strong sense, of an anti-psychiatry agenda. Which is fine, but this is not what I bought the book for. A couple of chapters in, it started getting really distracting. All of the sudden, the book seemed to be more of a soap-box for the authors, and the stories they were supposed to tell are interrupted by their constant agenda.
I mean, I know asylums wasn't the perfect solution, and I know a lot of people suffered in them, but you have to take history into consideration; psychiatry wasn't a very developed field at the time and the doctors were grasping for straws, trying to help very sick people. I refuse to believe, that every doctor, nurse, and caretaker at this hospital were as oblivious, cruel and negligent, as this book tries to make them appear. In a lot of the chapters, the authors write things like "If they had only bothered to listen.." or "If they had only cared..", which is just an enormous assumption to make, about all the people who worked there and the work they did.

I am constantly made aware of how incredibly presumptuous the authors seem to be. "Oh, she wasn't sick at all, she just had a quirky personality", type-comments. I'm sorry, but they didn't know these people, so it seems a bit arrogant to me, to suppose things about people you've never met.
I am so annoyed, because the concept of the book is - to me - genius. These writers had a brilliant opportunity to do something great, to dive into the complicated lives of people who suffered loss and tragedy, and finally give them a voice. Instead they chose to focus on their own voices. This final point is especially offending to me.

Also, the editing is horrible. Typos everywhere.

I am so sad, that this book left me so disappointed, because initially it seemed to be everything I could wish for, from a good book.
Unfortunately, I have now fought myself through seven chapters, and I am strongly considering leaving this book in the trash, since I can't really see myself giving it to anyone - it is simply to poorly written, factually wrong and biased.

Not cool. Extremely let down.

Road Rage, by Richard Matheson, Stephen King, Joe Hill, Chris Ryall, Phil Noto, Nelson Daniel, Rafa Garres

Acclaimed novelist/Eisner-winning graphic novelist Joe Hill collaborated with his father, Stephen King, in Throttle, for the first time on a tale that paid tribute to Richard Matheson’s classic tale, Duel. Now, IDW is proud to present comic-book tellings of both stories in Road Rage. Adapted by Chris Ryall with art by Nelson Daniel and Rafa Garres.

Exciting and tightly written
By Cypress Green
NO SPOILERS
Two short stories in one graphic novel.
In "Throttle," Hill and King pull together a short but exciting tale of another, and very different, son and father. As the description provides, their biker gang is pitted against a murderous trucker who mysteriously wishes them ill. Father and son's personalities and relationship are well drawn and believable. The comic is based on their short story Throttle (Kindle Single).

A short story needs to be lean and tightly written, with no elements useless to the plot and character development. Hill and King are both sharp writers who know how to make a character feel real and relatable. Matheson's "Duel" main character is also well defined, but with less background or final explanation. Matheson's story Duel inspired Hill and King's.

The book includes a comics version "Throttle" and one of "Duel" as well. I have never read "Duel" as a short story but, based on the perfect adaptation of the "Throttle" half by Ryall, I'm guessing it's true to Matheson's original.

I bought the short story version of "Throttle" first, but after reading the comic I didn't feel the comic was necessary. It felt superfluous, and I'm a big comics fan. Not that it's poorly done; it's well illustrated and true to the short story. Ryall and Daniel adapt and illustrate it well, with, IMHO, two caveats. The style used in "Duel" was not really to my liking. Not poorly done - just not my cup of tea. I loved the illustrations for Throttle, except the use of Ben-Day dots. I found them a little distracting. If they'd been a little smaller I would have liked them better. However, these opinions are just about my personal taste and you may disagree. In addition, the two stories are so similar that it felt like a bit of a repeat reading them as the only things in the book.
It also included a prologue by Joe Hill explaining how and why they wrote the story. I enjoyed reading that.

The kindle edition of the "Throttle" short story also includes a couple of illustrations from the comic.

burning rubber on the highway to hell
By A Customer
Road Rage is a collected representation of the comic book adaptations of the similarly themed Throttle- originally a prose piece by King and son Hill, and Matheson's Duel story- which Steven Spielberg later turned into a movie. The pair of introductions provide touching explanations to the King and son fascination over Matheson's original story and later film version, offering colorful mental imagery of just how cool the father-son relationship expectedly is. And both features certainly present a real world terror, as long and desolate strips of road mixed with the improbable actions of complete strangers can spin out of control into fast-paced dilemma after dilemma. Even cold-blooded murder.

Throttle is a hard-nosed roadside drama of a father and his adult son and their tribe of bikers, caught up in circumstances of the son manipulating the group into following up on a meth deal gone screwy. Their biker culture is well-played here as we see a side of Americana outside the law that many would think only exists as fiction on cable television. Unfortunately, even familial ties may be worn thin in this race to survival. Daniel does a smooth job on full art chores, competently doing the impossible of presenting captivating car chases in sequential form.

Duel is my favorite of the two, as a man on his way to a business meeting is caught up in the reckless games of a trucker seemingly gone mad. But up until the final scenes, and even beyond, is the driver just imagining his predicament? Garres does a GORGEOUS bit of artwork on this one, using a style that would strongly appeal to fans of Richard Corben or Robert Crumb, cartoonishly bending the roadways and physics alike in a drop dead serious tale of desperation and horror. His dark inks add to the overwhelming threat, giving a stark atmosphere on top of his masterful storytelling. Every page is just as beautiful as it is purposeful, really.

These are fun stories, but full of high speed action and violent gore. Lessons learned: Be kind to strangers, lest they catch you alone on the highway miles and miles from salvation. Also included is a gallery section displaying works from Phil Noto, Nelson Daniel, and Rafa Garres, Road Rage is a fine package, of a very different kind of scary.

Road Rage
By C. Dennis Moore
Richard Matheson and his fiction are one of the cornerstones upon which all speculative fiction since has been built. Along with Ray Bradbury, Harlan Ellison, Poe and Lovecraft, without Matheson many of today's horror writers wouldn't be where they are. Matheson's work touched more lives than many people even know; many episodes of the original "Twilight Zone" were his stories. In the 1970s, a young director named Spielberg was given a chance to turn a Matheson story called "Duel" into a movie, and we all know how that turned out. Matheson's influence across the genre is undeniable. So in 2009, a gaggle of authors submitted stories for an anthology paying tribute to this literary icon. One of those stories, "Throttle", was written by living legend in his own right Stephen King, and co-authored with King's son and up-and-coming demigod Joe Hill.

In 2012, IDW Comics and Chris Ryall combined the Matheson story with the King/Hill story into a 4-issue mini-series called ROAD RAGE and published it as a comic book.

As a product, the pairing and reconfiguring makes a good deal of sense. Both stories are very visual and lend themselves well to this medium--given the right artist; and with Nelson Daniel and Rafa Garres in charge, we have no worries.

Having read the collection, though, my only concern is was it necessary?

The father/son collaboration "Throttle" is an excellent story. The pair have taken the idea of the murderous truck driver from Matheson's "Duel", increased the body count, and made a much more complex story. In "Throttle", we've got a biker gang seeking revenge and stolen money, riding through the desert when they run afoul of a madman in an 18-wheeler. The trucker takes out a handful of bikers in their first meeting, providing the book with some outstanding visuals and immediately setting the tone for this unstoppable machine's rampage.

What King and Hill have done here that Matheson didn't--and it was a stroke of genius on Matheson's part--is give the trucker a motive and a backstory. We never delve into his history or see things through flashback, nothing so goofy; King and Hill manage that information as true masters, creating a very complex and compelling story.

But back to Matheson's genius. In the original story, "Duel", we never know anything at all about the trucker stalking the main character, Mann, and this works to make the character all the more terrible. In "Throttle" we come to understand why things are happening and we, as readers, come to feel something for the characters, both the bikers and the trucker. In Matheson's story, we come to feel only fear, and it works.

Both stories tackle the subject in different ways, but both do it perfectly and to different effect.

But was this collection necessary?

I'm still not convinced.

I love "Throttle". When I first read what King and Hill were doing--a biker gang is stalked by a killer truck driver--I thought, Oh, so they're just retelling the original story, only swapping out the guy in the car for guys on motorcycles...that oughta be fun...(insert sarcastic eye roll here). Little did I know they were doing so much more than that.

And I love "Duel". As a writer, pretty much everything I've ever read from Matheson has been an entire writing lesson in itself, and "Duel" is no different. This is a must-read story for anyone hoping to put words to paper and make something interesting. The problem is, I'm not sure it translates as well to the comic page.

Sure Ryall does a great job of getting us inside the mind of Mann as he's hounded by this mysterious trucker, and Rafa Garres's art is gritty and leaves you feeling like you need a shower. The adaptation of "Duel" is well-done. But in the aftermath of "Throttle", it feels like something is missing. If this were a serialized adaptation of several Matheson stories, I'd say "Duel" hits all the right notes. But with only two stories, and with the first story being so multi-layered, by comparison the "Duel" adaptation feels incomplete. The climax of the story feels rushed and the ending just falls off the edge of a cliff leaving us with a few ads at the back of the book and that's about it.

I was reading along, enjoying myself and all of the sudden, "THWAM! KRASH! BOOM! K-BOOM!"

Hell, I'm not even entirely sure what was happening in those panels. I read "Duel" over a decade ago and I don't remember the finer details, but I'm pretty sure Matheson's story was more interesting than that. I'm sitting here looking at the pages again and I'm still having a hard time piecing together just what happened. The climax in "Throttle" was easy to see, set up well, and executed perfectly. We even got a nice comedown from the action with a well-written denouement. But in the "Duel" adaptation, it's a few sound effects across 7 clumped together panels and "It was a primeval tumult in his mind...the cry of some ancestral beast above the body of its vanquished foe..." The end.

Yes, but HOW did he vanquish it? The staging of the climax was mismanaged and totally unclear on the page. And as much as I hate to say it, it greatly lessens the impact of the collection as a whole.

Ryall's adaptation and script are well-done. There was a father/son relationship in "Throttle" I didn't catch onto until much later in the story, but having not yet read the original prose version of the story--it's on my Kindle, I'll get to it--I don't know if that's a connection that's explained early on or not. Ryall makes good use of his narrative, though, and is able to add real tension to the pages.

The art--other than those last few pages in "Duel"--from Daniel ("Throttle") and Garres ("Duel") work well. The characters all look unique and the truck, especially in "Throttle" is a looming death machine defying the laws of physics, but doing it with style and a sense of impending doom that adds both movement and a feeling of breathlessness to the page. For sheer storytelling ability, Daniel is a master of his craft. Garres in his work on "Duel" instills a sense of anxiety and claustrophobia through a series of tightly-packed panels, plus his use of shadow and light really brings the heat of the setting home to the reader.

His work was definitely the more gritty of the two and brought back memories of that scene Matheson set so well in his original story.

Overall I loved ROAD RAGE. I just feel that, with a climax and resolution that is lacking so much, and to have that be the end of this story that spanned FOUR books--granted, the entire thing takes about half an hour to read from start to finish--it still leaves me with a big "okay...so?" in the end.

I think with a stronger, more well-choreographed ending, the entire book would have felt more complete. As it is, it feels like we're going along great and then we just--STOP. The end.

Hmm.

And given that these are very obviously two different truck drivers in two different stories in two different settings chasing two different protagonists . . . it's not like we needed "Duel" to properly finish off the tale of the mysterious Laughlin from "Throttle". Personally I would have been very happy with just an adaptation of the King/Hill story and left "Duel" to an adaptation of Matheson works, sandwiched between "I Am Legend" and "Nightmare at 20,000 Feet".

But still, those last couple of pages aside, ROAD RAGE is a good book and well worth the money. Definitely recommended. Now, as for whether it's worth a $25 cover price . . .
