"I'm going to marry Sam Longstreet, and there s nothing you can do to stop me," Callen said to her father in a calm, brittle voice. Her brown eyes flashed with defiance. "What's wrong with Sam? He's a rancher, a close neighbor. Longstreet land has bordered Whitelaw land in northwest Texas for generations!"

Garth Whitelaw eyed his daughter, the youngest of his three grown children, with trepidation. She had been engaged twice, but never married. Both times, he had warned her she was making a mistake. Both times, she had disregarded his advice, only to break the engagements later when she learned the truth of what he had said. Now she was proposing a third prospective husband, this one as bad—maybe even worse—than the other two. Garth had learned that telling Callen no was like waving a red flag in front of a bull, but he felt so strongly that Sam was the wrong man for his daughter that he made his arguments anyway.

"Sam Longstreet will never amount to anything," he said. "He's a down-at-the-heels rogue with nothing to his name but a ramshackle ranch. At a guess, I'd say he's only interested in your money."

"That's despicable!" Callen retorted. "How can you even suggest such a thing?"

"Because it's true," Garth replied in a steely voice. "You're an heiress, Sam's a dirt-poor rancher. He was lucky to get through high school, and he hasn't done anything since to educate himself. He's a loner, and he's lazy. The Double L is falling down around him. What can the two of you possibly have in common?"

"Sam's a wonderful man," Callen argued. "He's just had a lot of hard luck lately. His father made some bad investments that took all their savings. I'll agree Sam has been reclusive in the months since his dad died, but that sort of blow would be hard on anyone who loved his father as much as Sam loved E.J."

Garth probably missed E. J. Longstreet as much or more than Sam did. The two older men had been good friends. It was a shame what had happened to E.J., and Garth sympathized with Sam's loss. But that didn't mean he wanted Sam for a son-in-law. He couldn't imagine what his daughter found attractive about the rancher. He asked again, "What do you see in him?"

Callen hesitated a moment before she replied. "Sam needs me, Daddy. And I need him. He makes me feel…special."

Garth snorted. "I'm not saying what happens between a man and woman between the sheets isn't important. But you're going to find it mighty tough sitting across from a lazy good-for-nothing at the breakfast table for the rest of your life."

Callen's lips flattened and her eyes narrowed. "I didn't mean Sam makes me feel special in bed. I meant— Oh, what's the use! I'm not going to change your mind, and you're not going to change mine. I wasn't asking your permission to marry Sam, I just wanted to let you know we're going to be married and invite you to the wedding."

"I won't be there," Garth said flatly.

Callen's chin quivered. She gritted her teeth to steady it before replying, "That's up to you, of course." She started for the front door of the antebellum-style mansion that had been built more than a century before as the main ranch house at Hawk's Way. She paused at the front door, waiting, hoping her father would change his mind. Her heart sank as she heard his parting words.

"If you marry Sam, you won't have a job here anymore." Garth knew the threat was a mistake the moment the words were out of his mouth, but it was too late to take them back. Callen was the best cutting horse trainer he had. She wouldn't have any trouble finding another job. And he didn't want to lose all contact with his only daughter. Though it had been years since he had said the words to her, he loved her dearly.

Callen's shoulders stiffened, then squared, before she turned to face her father. "I hope you'll change your mind, Daddy. Because come Friday, I'm going to be Mrs. Sam Longstreet."

Callen and Zach
By P. Newhart
Callen and Zach contains two Hawk's Way stories, The Headstrong Bride and The Disobedient Bride.

The Headstrong Bride, Callen Whitelaw is tricked into marriage by Sam Longstreet who wants revenge on the Whitelaws for his father's death. Sam figures the best way to get this revenge is to steal a Whitelaw. The only problem is, what if the Whitelaw in question, Callen, steals his heart instead?

The Disobedient Bride is Rebecca Littlewolf who answered Zach Whitelaw's newspaper ad for a wife. Zach wants a wife purely to bear his children and raise them, and Rebecca is not having any luck becoming pregnant...therefore being disobedient (really? this doesn't offend anyone?).

I am beginning to wish that I had never bought the last book in this series and now have to read the first eleven to catch up (I know I don't have to, but I wanted the background for Sisters Found and now that I've come this far, I'm going to keep going). I know that these novels mainly have glowing reviews, but I find them very sexist and outdated (despite being written recently). I thought they were getting a bit better and meatier with Carter and Falcon, but this is a step back. We'll see what Hawk's Way Rebels brings, the stories seem a bit longer so hopefully more Western plot and stories about the ranches and horses will be included as well as the love story, as the setting is great.

Review
"If you're looking for the best source of knowledge and inspiration between two covers, you have only one choice: David Yewdall's 'Practical Art of Motion Picture Sound. Yewdall goes back and forth between step-by-step explanation of every part of the craft and reminisces on his career, all the while never forgetting the end product--the art."
- Larry Blake, Mix Magazine

"Practical Art of Motion Picture Sound" is a must-read for all students of sound, whether in film school, recording school or already working in the craft. More than that, it's a must-read for all students of film, and no doubt, a few directors and producers out there would benefit from a read." - Mix Magazine

"I wish this book had been available when I was starting to make movies: there is probably no producer or director who will not benefit from David Yewdall's lucid and thoroughly practical explanation of creativity with sound, and the technical disciplines necessary to use sound as an art form."
- Roger Corman, Concorde/New Horizons

"The DGA should make this book required reading before their members could go out and work in the industry! This is the first time I have ever seen the subject presented in such a realistic and practical way that is written in a style that everyone can understand."
- Jim Webb, Academy Award-winning Production Mixer and multi-channel expert

"This is a book for ALL filmmakers, whether a budding 'in-the-trenches' sound editor or a producer/director who deigns to touch actual film. This book reveals HOW to achieve the creative soundtrack that the director reams of while actually saving money for the producer--and best of all, it's told in a witty, anecdotal style...A must read for both student filmmakers and the seasoned professional."
- Richard Anderson, M.P.S.E.

"The best book on the subject to date, hands down. Thanks Mr. Yewdall!"
-Ken Trevenna, Ontario Institute of Audio Recording Technology

Tough to get to the point
By I. Noh Jack
I am a college level instructor and was looking for a book to use as a text for my Sound Design Class. I was excited to see that David Yewdall had written a book on the subject. He is well known and respected in our Hollywood Sound Community.
My first impression was that the book was full of great real life information but was a bit cluttered with anecdotes. As the class has progressed I have found that the students have not responded well to the text. I can understand why. The points and specifics are introduced and surrounded by drawn out reminiscing. It takes effort to get students to read anyway and this book does not help. It reads like a biography lined with details.

There is a significant amount of text dedicated to film specific procedures. Although there may be instances where a student may encounter mag film, it seems to be too much.

The included DVD seems a bit amateurish. It gives some added value by giving a few audible examples, but the narration is monotone. It caused some laughter in the class and it loses their attention.

The details are great and hit the nail on the head for anyone wanting to enter the industry, or better understand how to work with a sound professional. But it is heavy sledding to mush through. It could be edited down to a more readable text and be better to use for a class.

Ego gets in the way
By SoundsLikeBrian
NOTE: This is more of a review of the 2nd edition, but because the 3rd edition is out now, I feel this information is important and I'm sure it is still relevant.

I have to begin by saying I have the upmost respect for Mr. Yewdall and his credits are impressive to say the least. I then have to immediately follow that statement by saying his book editor should be fired.

There is a ton of information in this book, unfortunately you have to wade through personal stories, name dropping, and ego stroking tales that really weigh the book down. I would love to read a biography about Yewdall, just not while I'm looking for real, informative substance about the facts of Motion Picture audio.

This would probably be THE definitive book because of the substance is attempts to cover, but ends up very inefficient and distracting. You don't have to look any farther than the dedication page (the third page in) to see an example of the distractions that follow it.

Now, as far as the 3rd edition goes, it was printed 15 years later, so read a few passages in a bookstore before buying it. If you don't see any personal stories or name dropping, he probably found a good book editor.

Cheers

Excellent Overview of Sound for Film
By Brad Semenoff
This is my favorite book for film sound. David writes an excellent book that covers everything for film sound. He explains everything from before pre-production to print-mastering. My only problem with this book is that the chapter on Pro Tools is extremely dated and almost irrelevant. Having said that, there are a number of excellent Pro Tools books out there, but this is the only book that covers film sound in such detail. The accompanying DVD is a nice addition. This, along with Dialogue Editing for Motion Pictures by John Purcell, is a must read for film sound editors. Directors and producers would also benefit from reading this book.

The Poet's Holy Craft: William Gilmore Simms and Romantic Verse Tradition, by Matthew C. Brennan

The Poet's Holy Craft represents the first full-length analysis and interpretation of William Gilmore Simms's poetry. Matthew C. Brennan demonstrates the comprehensiveness of Simms's romanticism by examining Simms's poetics, his experimental sonnets, and his deep affinity to William Wordsworth, which especially shows in Simms's pioneering attitudes toward nature and ecology.

The poetic career of antebellum Charleston writer William Gilmore Simms constitutes a cautionary tale of how ambition worthy of John Keats and talent comparable to any American poet before Walt Whitman could not alone guarantee a toehold in the literary canon. Although praised in his lifetime by the likes of Edgar Allan Poe and William Cullen Bryant, Simms as a poet faced virtual erasure from the American canon until a recent revival of scholarship. Building on the work of James Everett Kibler, Brennan argues that Simms exhibits the influence of British romanticism earlier than do his canonic contemporaries Henry W. Longfellow, Ralph Waldo Emerson, and Henry David Thoreau. Brennan's reappraisal maps Simms's early imitation of neoclassicism and George Lord Byron, and his slightly later absorption of Keats, Percy Bysshe Shelley, and Gothicism. Through study of Simms's letters, reviews, extant lectures, manuscripts, and drafts, Brennan delineates his subject's romantic poetics and offers new insights into his revision process. Brennan finds in Simms an interest in experimentation with the forms and themes of the romantic sonnet that supersedes that of even the British romantics. Noting Simms's deep affinity to Wordsworth, and to a lesser degree Samuel Taylor Coleridge, Brennan portrays Simms as remarkably in advance of Thoreau, although from a Southern context, in the environmental concerns that present themselves in his contemplative poetry and in his life and work at his home, Woodlands plantation.

In short The Poet's Holy Craft offers a corrective that rescues Simms from the long shadow
cast on his literary legacy by his Confederate affiliations and illumines his original contributions
to the romantic verse tradition.

Vital Study of Simms
By Sean Busick
No longer neglected to the extent he once was, William Gilmore Simms has finally begun to attract some of the scholarly and popular attention that is so overdue for the antebellum South's preeminent author. Matthew Brennan's volume ranks among the best of these recent studies. Not only does Brennan skillfully explain Simms's poetic technique, he also, and perhaps more importantly, places him in his proper historical and literary context. Get this book.

About the Author
"Edmond Rostand (1868-1918) was a playwright born out of his time. In a period when naturalism was the order of the day Rostand's plays seemed to hark back to a more romantic, chivalric period. His plays proved popular with the French public bolstered by a number of roles specifically created for the great Parisian actress Sarah Bernhardt. Born in Manchester in 1959, Ranjit Bolt was educated at Perse School and at Balliol College, Oxford. He worked as an investment analyst and advisor for eight years, before concentrating on theatre translation from the end of 1990. Ranjit Bolt's acclaimed translations for the theatre, many of which are published by Oberon Books, include works by Moliere, Seneca, Sophocles, Corneille, Beaumarchais, Brecht, Goldoni and Zorilla. The Politically Incorrect Guide to the Great Depression and the New Deal (The Politically Incorrect Guides), by Robert Murphy

In this timely new P.I. Guide, Murphy reveals the stark truth: free market failure didn't cause the Great Depression and the New Deal didn't cure it. Shattering myths and politically correct lies, he tells why World War II didn t help the economy or get us out of the Great Depression; why it took FDR to make the Depression Great; and why Herbert Hoover was more like Obama and less like Bush than the liberal media would have you believe. Free-market believers and capitalists everywhere should have this on their bookshelf and in their briefcases.

Review
Read this book and understand why massively increasing government is not change we can believe in --Congressman Ron Paul

From the Inside Flap
Everything you know about the Great Depression and the New Deal is wrong

We all learned in school that the 1920s were a time of unregulated capitalism that led to the stock market Crash of 1929 and the Great Depression of the 1930s. Herbert Hoover was a laissez-faire ideologue who did nothing to alleviate the crisis--even as citizens starved and were forced to live in "Hoovervilles." And the interventionist policies and massive spending programs of Franklin D. Roosevelt's New Deal gradually lifted us out of the Depression, until World War II brought it to a definitive end.

The only trouble with this official narrative--taught in most history textbooks, and proclaimed as gospel by the media--is that every element of it is false. Worse, this unsubstantiated myth is now being used to justify a "new New Deal" in response to today's economic crisis that could lead to a Greater Depression even deeper and longer than the first. But in The Politically Incorrect Guide to the Great Depression and the New Deal, economist Robert Murphy fact-checks the myths, shows why they're wrong, and delves deep into history to set the record straight. His "politically incorrect" conclusion? It was government, not free markets, that caused the Great Depression--and the New Deal only made it worse. The real "lessons of the Great Depression" are not what you've been taught.

* The Crash of `29 was caused not by capitalism, but by the boom brought on by the newly created Federal Reserve's easy money policy (sound familiar?)
* Hoover made the Depression "Great" precisely by abandoning the laissez-faire approach that previous presidents had followed and that kept depressions short
* The bank runs of the 1930s were caused by government intervention in the banking system
* Government efforts to prop up wages and prices led to a full decade of double-digit unemployment
* FDR's arbitrary policies toward businessmen resulted in net investment of less than zero for much of the Depression

Might Barack Obama be the new FDR? You'll know, after reading The Politically Incorrect Guide to the Great Depression and the New Deal that if he is, that's nothing to celebrate.

From the Back Cover
Bad times are here again...and so too are bad ideas on how to fix them.

No economic myth these days is more pernicious than the myth that the free market caused the Great Depression and the New Deal got us out of it. That, as economist Robert P. Murphy points out is flat-out false. In The Politically Incorrect Guide to the Great Depression and the New Deal he provides irrefutable evidence that not only did government interference with the market cause the Great Depression (and our current economic collapse), but Herbert Hoover's and Franklin Delano Roosevelt's big government policies afterwards made it much longer and much worse (just as President Barack Obama's extraordinary expansion of government promises to do today). Perhaps even more compelling, Murphy exposes the untold story behind the New Deal--how it operated by force, and why what's really at stake is not only our economy but our liberty.

Praise for The Politically Incorrect Guide to the Great Depression and the New Deal.

"A thorough and impressive critique of FDR and the New Deal which should be required reading in all modern U.S. history and economics courses. I highly recommend this insightful book."
--Burton W. Folsom, Jr., Professor of History, Hillsdale College and author of New Deal or Raw Deal?: How FDR's Economic Legacy Has Damaged America

"Robert P. Murphy's splendid guide to the Great Depression and the New Deal is a clear, compelling account of an era that even most economists get wrong. Now that many people are clamoring for a rerun of the New Deal, you owe it to yourself to find out what such a sequel would entail. Murphy's book is the best place to begin your quest."
--Robert Higgs, Senior Fellow in Political Economy, The Independent Institute

"Today's central planners cower from the truth about the Great Depression and the New Deal like Dracula before a crucifix. Robert Murphy eviscerates the fantasy version of these episodes that is used to justify destructive and idiotic policies today. You almost feel sorry for the propagandists while reading this book. Almost."
--Thomas E. Woods, Ph.D., author of the New York Times bestseller Meltdown: A Free-Market Look at Why the Stock Market Collapsed, the Economy Tanked, and Government Bailouts Will Make Things Worse

"Dr. Murphy explains in insightful fashion why the conventional wisdom is neither conventional nor wisdom. He is not only a good economist but can turn the reader into a good economist."
--Gary Wolfram, William Simon Professor of Economics and Public Policy, Hillsdale College

"Bob Murphy's Politically Incorrect Guide to the Great Depression provides defenders of liberty the intellectual arsenal they need to counter the myth that capitalism caused, and government cured the Great Depression. Read this book and understand why massively increasing government is not change we can believe in."
--Congressman Ron Paul

A Popular Guide to the Best of Economic Scholarship
By Fritz R. Ward
One of the problems with economic history is that it is difficult to "test" it properly. With regard to the Great Depression and the New Deal, there is still a very loud contingent of Keynesian economists who insist that had Hoover and Roosevelt just spent even more money than they did, we would not have experienced a prolonged depression. Other economists, notably the Monetarist school founded by Milton Friedman and Anna Schwartz, insist that responsibility must lie with the Federal Reserve for not acting quickly enough to stem deflationary pressures, while still other economists, especially the Austrian school, claim the problem was caused by government intervention into the market place. All these writers can point to some evidence in support their position, though in the case of the Keynesians, that evidence is very narrow and often somewhat contrived, especially when it appears from the pen of popular columnist Paul Krugman. But the problem is that we cannot simply directly test what would have happened had their been no New Deal, or an even greater amount of spending on the New Deal. Similarly, we cannot directly test the effects of monetary policy. What we can do is carefully examine what actually happened before, during, and after the Great Depression using these three models and see which interpretation best accords with the known facts. Such a project requires a great deal more familiarity with economics than most historians possess. Not surprisingly, studies which have done this sort of analysis in the past, most notably Murray N. Rothbard's America's Great Depression have not been very accessible to the public at large. This new book by economist Robert Murphy is at once immanently readable and a good synopsis of present day scholarship.

After briefly discussing the three main schools of thought about this crisis in American history, Murphy is quick to dismiss with the Keynesians. The argument that government spending was what saved us from the Great Depression, and that a lack of spending by Hoover caused the problem is fairly easy to disprove. Historians have long known that Hoover was a staunch interventionist in the economy and he rejected the advice of his own Secretary of the Treasury to simply let the bad investments liquidate themselves, a policy that had worked wonders in the earlier contraction of 1921. (Indeed, some historians of a left wing bent have chosen to praise Hoover for his intervention, most notably Joan Hoff Wilson in her classic study Herbert Hoover: Forgotten Progressive.) Of course, we cannot know if the economy absolutely would have recovered in the absence of Hoover's many interventions into the market. All we can say for certain is that he was not a laissez-faire president who did nothing while the economy contracted around him. Those who make this claim, most notably Paul Krugman, are either astoundingly ignorant or fundamentally dishonest. I tend to lean (charitably) towards the former position. As an ironic aside, Hoover was anti-interventionist only in foreign policy. Yet the institute that still bears his name is now a hot bed of neo conservatives who favor intervention everywhere in the world. But as a politican he did remarkable work at trying to set a floor for wages and prices, created the Reconstruction Finance Corporation and ran budget deficits that make those of today under Bush and Obama seem modest by comparison. Hoover rightly claimed he was the first President to not let the economy go its own way and four years later we were in the midst of the worst economic downturn in the nation's history.

Of course, there was some initial recovery during the early Roosevelt administration, but nowhere near to the extent seen in any previous downturn, even on a percentage basis. Indeed, one of the strong points of this book is that, unlike most economic histories of the period, Murphy examines several of America's large downturns, including the dramatic economic collapse of the 1870s in order to give some sense of comparison. Eventually of course, the early gains of the New Deal collapsed in 1937 and the economy right back to where it was under Hoover. Indeed, Treasury Secretary Henry Morgenthau rightly recognized that all the New Deal policies had failed, though they had left the US with an enormous debt. He was far more honest than many of today's leftists who share similar political positions.

So on the whole, the thesis that government spending mitigated against the Great Depression, and ultimately helped end it is simply not supported by the evidence. We cannot say for certain that even more government spending would not have solved the problem, and that is precisely what many today are advocating. But we can say that this was the first time the government responded to a downturn using these policies and not coincidentally, this was the first time (and hopefully the last) that instead of quickly realigning resources, the market fell into a quagmire. But easy as it is to dismiss with the Keynesians, one of the strengths of this book is that it also takes to task the Monetarists who many naively believe are the opposite of the Keynesians.

Monetarists tend to be somewhat more sympathetic to a free market, though not as much as many people suspect. Friedman, for example, was not opposed to a welfare state as such. He rightly argued that a negative income tax was a more "efficient" way to obtain the goal of an income floor for people than our current hodgepodge of programs, but his argument was pragmatic, not principled. Similarly, he supported government funding of schools and his still controversial voucher system would have made this program even more universal than it is today. He did not consider the fact that with government funding comes government regulations governing the use of that funding, a policy that would have effectively killed the innovations found in many private schools. But it is only when one looks at Friedman's big claim to fame, his monetarist theory of the Great Depression, that one realizes just how similar his perspective is to the Keynesian one. Friedman argued the Fed sat and did nothing (similar to the Keynesian claim about Hoover) while the economy contracted. Had they been more actively interventionist, he argues, we could have avoided the depression altogether. But, like the Keynesian argument, Friedman's claim simply does not stand up to historical scrutiny. The Fed dramatically lowered interest rates immediately following Black Monday, and they continued to do so throughout Hoover's reign. By contrast, in the 1920-21 contraction, the Fed had actually increased rates! And in the final analysis, both the Keynesian and monetarist claims essentially state the same proposition: government inaction caused the depression. And the historical evidence suggest both are wrong: government inaction simply did not happen during the Great Depression.

On the other hand, the Austrian claim that government intervention in the market caused the depression, is far more substantiated. Beginning in 1927, the Fed decided to inflate US currency in order, of all things, to assist the bank of England in preventing devaluation of the pound sterling. But this inflation, which went through the banks, had the effect of making many investments that were not profitable appear so, and a stock market boom followed. When the bust inevitably came, rather than allowing these bad investments to liquidate, as had happened in all previous busts, the government boldly tried to keep inflating the currency, with disastrous results. And, as Murphy points out in the close of his book, the same could easily happen today. Many are calling upon President Obama to become the new FDR and based on the early days of his reign, he seems quite happy in this role. Already, bailouts of businesses (a bad policy that began under the Bush administration) is proceeding apace, and the administration has even made tenative steps towards nationalizing the largest banks. Promises of tax cuts for the middle class and pay as you go spending, so widely trumpeted during the campaign, now appear to be temporary, in terms of the former, or completely forgotten in terms of the latter.

There are, however, some signs of (real) hope. Several Senate Democrats have refused to sign on to the proposed cap and trade carbon tax, a boondoggle for the economy if there ever was one, and it seems unlikely a tax hike will occur until the 2010 Bush tax cuts expire. And more citizens are becoming increasingly skeptical of the whole bailout agenda. That is a good sign, and books like these are a good place to start if you want to understand why a new "New Deal" is the last thing this country needs.

PIG - The Great Depression and the New Deal
By PJM
Robert P. Murphy's new book makes the reader question one's own education about the U.S. Surely Social Security, abandoning the gold standard, the FDIC, are all good things! And didn't the New Deal get us out of our worst economic mess in history? Weren't we all taught that in school, indeed, perhaps by our own parents? Much like his previous work (PIG - Capitalism), Murphy's new book takes dead aim at many of the myths and outright falsehoods of that time. And he instructs us in an easy, straight-forward style. He reminds us (perhaps we never knew) of the outrages of the New Deal: the thug-like tactics of the National Recovery Administration, bank "holidays", government destruction of food, and so on. And Murphy's likening of Hoover/Roosevelt to Bush/Obama is superb.
But alas, nothing is perfect. Murphy's book is troubling in two respects: 1. the reader wants/needs more - I literally could not put the book down... I wanted to keep going - his style makes for such easy and interesting reading! 2. his analysis of the current US state of affairs vis a vis 70-80 years ago is downright scary! He certainly does not exude confidence in our current "leaders."

A Chance To See The World Anew
By S. Coughlin
Economic history is a difficult subject to enjoy. Rarely is an entry easily readable to a lay audience and even rarer does it show its applicability to current events. This book succeeds at both.
Released in an exceptionally timely manner and well styled, the reader will have trouble telling the book from a newspaper. Similar to his earlier The Politically Incorrect Guide(tm) to Capitalism (Politically Incorrect Guides) (Paperback), the author covers a large amount of history and theory together, never losing the reader's attention or confusing us with tedious theoretical minutia. Instead you'll find the simplest of graphs that make the most profound of conclusions by themselves. Quick reviews of familiar topics are followed by shocking details few have heard before. Always radical, but never dry or confusing, the subjects fall into each other smoothly. The history itself is right-on, with some of the latest research seamless with the more conventional subject matters.
The book starts with the Hoover administration, covers the crash, Hoover's response, and then details the whole Roosevelt administration, providing important points on earlier and later history throughout. Coverage is quick but exhaustive--every major political and economic development is mentioned.
Some of the PIG series tend to be trite with their arguments, but not this entry. Discussion of the classical gold metal standards' value and the working mechanisms of floating currency exchange under it were new, even to a well-read history hobbyist. The analysis of the sudden end of the New Deal is fresh and leads one to want to look further into this profound yet neglected development of our history.
Any short work has its drawbacks, however. Major discussion points are left open and wanting for more detail. The author's redundant quoting of Coolidge reminds the reader of a kitten discovering a new toy. Worse, the critically needed demonstration of how this history may be repeating itself today--the cause célèbre of the work--is given only short attention.
Anyone familiar with the contemporary research on the Great Depression knows that the history we were all taught in middle-school is almost complete myth. Anyone also familiar with the news today knows that few understand this. Educated laymen would do well to dispel these myths and grant themselves a chance to look at contemporary events without a false view of the past blurring their vision. As Einstein wrote, "No problem can be solved from the same consciousness that created it. We must learn to see the world anew." For anyone interested, this book would be an excellent opportunity to do so.

Mark Twain: The Complete Interviews (Amer Lit Realism & Naturalism)From University Alabama Press

The great writer’s irascible wit shines in this comprehensive collection.

This volume is an annotated and indexed scholarly edition of every known interview with Mark Twain spanning his entire career. In these interviews, Twain discusses such topical issues as his lecture style, his writings, and his bankruptcy, while holding forth on such timeless issues as human nature, politics, war and peace, government corruption, humor, race relations, imperialism, international copyright, the elite, and his impressions of other writers (Howells, Gorky, George Bernard Shaw, Tennyson, Longfellow, Kipling, Hawthorne, Dickens, Bret Harte, among others).

These interviews are both oral performances in their own right and a new basis for evaluating contemporary responses to Twain’s writings. Some of the parameters Gary Scharnhorst has followed in assembling the collection is to omit self-interviews, humorous sketches written by Twain in interview form, interviews judged by Twain scholars to be spurious, purported interviews that contain no direct quotations, and interviews that exist only in versions translated from the English, as there is no way to verify the accuracy of their retranslations back into English. Because the interviews are records of verbal conversations rather than texts written in Twain’s hand, Scharnhorst has corrected errors in spelling and regularized punctuation. Four interviews here are new to scholarship; fewer than a fifth have ever been reprinted.

Because Mark Twain: The Complete Interviews makes accessible, in one volume, source documents of immeasurable value to understanding one of America’s most consequential writers, it will be valued by both academic and public libraries, Twain scholars and enthusiasts, and general readers of humor.

Review

"Like Theodore Dreiser: Interviews, ed. by Frederic Rusch and Donald Pizer (CH, Jun'05, 42-5739), this book provides vivid biographical data with an immediacy that brings to life everything from Mark Twain's personal idiosyncrasies and mannerisms to his central ideas on life and literature. An international celebrity and inveterate traveler, Twain reflected on the social and cultural mores of five continents. He responded to questions, often with his inimitable phrasing, about the leading political, financial, and artistic figures of his day. Scharnhorst (Univ. of New Mexico) wisely presents the pieces, which date from 1871 to 1910, in chronological order, regularizing spelling and punctuation. Annotations aid readers lacking a specialist's knowledge of the historical and biographical references in the interviews. In notes, the editor supplements Twain's interview comments with versions published in other journals. This lengthy edition would have profited from more condensation than it in fact received. Because it includes numerous extraordinary interviews, fewer selections that repeat Twain's pat routines (on subjects ranging from his ideas about international copyrights to his smoking habits) would have made the volume as friendly for the general reader as for the scholar. Nevertheless, in small doses the material will delight and enlighten anyone interested in Mark Twain. Summing Up: Highly recommended. Graduate students, researchers, and faculty; general readers."

“Mark Twain: The Complete Interviews goes a long way in recovering that side of the writer that has largely been lost to us. This is a major contribution to Twain scholarship and Scharnhorst’s introduction is a model of clarity and precision.”—Tom Quirk, editor of The Portable Mark Twain

“Next to Mark Twain’s letters, the interviews with him constitute the most important body of texts that still have not come fully into print. We get in this book an entirely fresh, distinctive, informative body of autobiographical commentary; we also get a kind of running performance as Twain interacts with and postures for reporters (and their readers!), and continually reframes his public persona.”—Louis J. Budd, author of Our Mark Twain

Among His Own People
By Kevin Killian
He was 36 before he was first interviewed, and it took awhile for the logrolling to really get going, but then in his fifties and sixties interviewers came to him in droves. MARK TWAIN: THE COMPLETE INTERVIEWS is an amazing publishing project, I leave the details to the specialists. All the general public needs to know is that it is the funniest book to be published this year, and pound for pound, dollar for dollar, by far the best bargain of the year even at seventy-five dollars a pop. I advise you to stock up on this book for Christmas presents or what have you, or even just to see you through the long hard winter with a little bit of jollification at your fingertips.

Along the way, we meet not only Twain but dozens of newspapermen (and women) who wrote and interviewed in styles far different from today's cut and dried cut and paste. Thanks to The PARIS REVIEW and (in a slightly different vein) PLAYBOY, the literary interview has stultified in recent years into a completely stodgy genre, ripe with conventions and rigid with tropes. Reading this book, we are there for the birth of the interview, in which every journalist had a different idea of what an interview should be like. Some are nearly three act plays, some brief sonnets, some grim novellas, and others are like episodes of a proto-LAUGH IN. Nearly all of them bring Mark Twain to life as does nothing else, not even the autobiography.

You can tell he, a former newspaperman, believed in giving his brothers and sisters their money's worth. In one interview Clara (Mrs Samuel Clemens) ventures into the room and she is shocked to hear the tall tales coming out of her husband's mouth. "I think it would be better," she hints, "if your wife saw your interviews in print before they were published." This was before the invention of the tape recorder, of course, and it is especially amusing to hear three or four reporters' accounts of the same press conference--all of them "quoting" Twain purportedly verbatim, but none of "him" saying the same thing twice. I can't imagine the assiduity with which editor Scharnhorst must have had to track down all these items, but the multiple accounts is what really makes the project seem like living history.

We don't recognize the names of most of the reporters (many stories were filed anonymously) but now and then a famous name creeps in. The New York Herald commissions Rudyard Kipling, for example, during a visit of Kipling to New England, and has him attempt to track Twain down at his mother in law's house in Elmira (summer 1890).

The interviews increase as Twain, bankrupted by bad investments, undergoes heroic reading tours that span the globe, as he tries to pay off his investors. Eerily enough bankruptcy had earlier struck Twain's hero, Sir Walter Scott, who drove himself to the grave trying to make good his debts, and they were the same age--58--when this disaster struck. "If I have to pay my debts by writing books as Scott had to write them," he tells the Seattle Post-Intelligencer in 1895, "I might easily kill myself in five years as he did." Nearly every piece is funny, except when Twain's ragging on about the copyright issue he was so hepped on (and even there he's able to provoke a black humor, like that of Pudd'nhead Wilson) or when human injustice makes him dark with rage, as against Leopold II of Belgium. And yet the overall impression is of a man always on edge, whose performative genius renewed him again and again, and yet destroyed him eventually. His "Mark Twain"-ness turned into something of a shtick--the snowy white hair, the white cotton suits, the omnipresent cigar, even the femme fatale habit of receiving journalists in bed in his nightclothes--but in his insistence on maintaining a space for "trading lies" within a general framework of outrageous honesty, a coruscating, inventive wit still dazzles.

My favorite pieces? Twain grimly encountering ancient men who claim that they were the originals of Huckleberry Finn or Tom Sawyer as boys. Or his routine on how hotels keep plumbers' uniforms in basement lockers for their waiters to dress in when they pretend to be attending to plumbing problems in his suite.

A treasure trove for the Twain Enthusiast
By Matthew Kelley
This collected edition is sure to delight both American lit. scholars and serious Twain fans. One word of caution. Taken together, these interviews are probably too much for the casual reader. For the rest of us, this is a treat. If you've been reading the autobiography of Twain that has now consumed two volumes and are eagerly waiting the third, this should hold your interest.

An Unexpected Great Find
By Aceto
Firstly I chose this rare and scholarly volume because I never suspected Clemens' life would have had so many preserved interviews. Secondly I have Clemens on my shoulder as I celebrate my becoming a fascist target. There is no greater honor than attracting their attention, their knowing I am so important as to mobilize their cadres of slobbering, moronic operatives to vote against my reviews. I never expected such an honor. I bathe in their hatred for me, but I grieve for my country they hate more than they hate me. Each negative is a medal on my breast. Keep 'em coming ye droolers. They never leave their names as is common with the cowardice of wingnuts, both because they cannot read and cannot write. Good with a gun, if it is an automatic. Their wives have to teach them how to tie a noose.

Rather rule a sewer than bear equality in paradise.

So on to business. I salute University of Alabama Press for publishing this fine work in typical, beautiful Southern Linen boards. Classy, no? Scharnhorst is as formidable an editor as his eponymous warship. Next, I applaud their ANSI Z 39.48-1984 standard certification. You rarely see such care to paper preservation standards. Scharnhorst rightly dedicated this book to Louis J. Budd, a Twain scholar of some considerable regard.

Imagine a century ago, Twain's disembarking into a "gaggle" of fifteen reporters on his pier, returning to New York. That is four or five cities' papers making sure they were not scooped.

There are ample references to former President and former Lieutenant General (first since Washington) Grant. Clemens was his neighbor on 10th Street Manhattan, and then his friend and editor. Clemens was secondarily responsible for Grant's excellent memoirs. He saw his friend upstate New York through throat cancer and made sure we had Grant's treasure. Some 19 references here. The notes are exemplary.

I cannot help but add that Grant was invited by Bismarck to Prussia. He wanted meet the man who invented modern warfare. Bismarck directly credited Grant for the outcome of the 1870 Franco-Prussian war. Bismarck had studied Grant's campaigns and appreciated Grant's emphasis on logistics, river, road and supremely, rail.

For us who read his novels, stories and essays, we now have an important missing piece of this public figure.

Teachings of the Earth: Zen and the Environment (Dharma Communications), by John Daido Loori

According to Zen teaching, everything in the universe exists interdependently, so valuing the welfare of one being over another, or of humans over the planet, makes no sense at all. This teaching, which can empower us to care passionately about the earth and its future, is not only a Zen principle, it’s something that comes up for anyone who carefully investigates the nature of reality. It’s a lesson found everywhere we look in nature. And the idea is also found in writings by figures as diverse as Lao Tzu, Walt Whitman, Hermann Hesse, and Henry David Thoreau. John Daido Loori reveals the underlying environmental ethic animating these teachings and shows how it can be a wellspring for our appreciation of the earth in the new millennium.

This is a fabulous eye opening and spirit driven book
By Kathleen A. Bishop
If you want to envelope yourself with writings about the environment and Buddhism and our responsibility to sustaining it and therefore the people that inhabit it--this is the book to add to your library. One quote: "In engaging Zen training with an eye on its relationship to ecological concerns, we ask the question, 'Where does the earth end and where do I begin?' We study the practice of survival: survival in and of the mountains, the forests, the rivers, the cities; survival of the individual and of the human species, of the community and the family, and, indeed survival of this great earth itself." This is not a book of simple poetry and prose, but of ways that we, as individuals, can change the planet and ourselves in the process. Happy reading!
