Russ & Daughters: Reflections and Recipes from the House That Herring Built, by Mark Russ Federman

WITH 8 PAGES OF FULL-COLOR PHOTOGRAPHS AND BLACK-AND-WHITE IMAGES THROUGHOUT

The former owner/proprietor of the beloved appetizing store on Manhattan’s Lower East Side tells the delightful, mouthwatering story of an immigrant family’s journey from a pushcart in 1907 to “New York’s most hallowed shrine to the miracle of caviar, smoked salmon, ethereal herring, and silken chopped liver” (The New York Times Magazine).

When Joel Russ started peddling herring from a barrel shortly after his arrival in America from Poland, he could not have imagined that he was giving birth to a gastronomic legend. Here is the story of this “Louvre of lox” (The Sunday Times, London): its humble beginnings, the struggle to keep it going during the Great Depression, the food rationing of World War II, the passing of the torch to the next generation as the flight from the Lower East Side was beginning, the heartbreaking years of neighborhood blight, and the almost miraculous renaissance of an area from which hundreds of other family-owned stores had fled.

Filled with delightful anecdotes about how a ferociously hardworking family turned a passion for selling perfectly smoked and pickled fish into an institution with a devoted national clientele, Mark Russ Federman’s reminiscences combine a heartwarming and triumphant immigrant saga with a panoramic history of twentieth-century New York, a meditation on the creation and selling of gourmet food by a family that has mastered this art, and an enchanting behind-the-scenes look at four generations of people who are just a little bit crazy on the subject of fish.

Review
“If you've ever lived in New York or have any affection for a bagel and lox, you’ll appreciate this look at one of New York’s most iconic food stores. Federman’s history of his family and his store will give you a crazy feeling of nostalgia, even if you weren't yet born during the times he describes.”
—Huffington Post, Best Food Books of 2013

“The only thing better than this forshpayz of memories, photographs, and recipes would be a trip to East Houston Street to ‘the house that herring built.’ ”
—Dawn Drzal, The New York Times Book Review

“Federman’s voice pops from the page. . . . Russ & Daughters is a good story well told, packed with zinging Yiddishisms and better-than-average jokes that bubble up organically. You soak in it, like brine, until you’re pleasantly pickled.”
—Dwight Garner, The New York Times

“For centuries on end philosophers have tried and failed to define the good life. Federman’s life as revealed here can hardly be reduced to a set of impersonal abstractions, but if philosophers are willing to settle for a case in point rather than a developed theory, let them read his marvelous book.”
—Jason Epstein, The Wall Street Journal

“With crisp and evocative details worthy of a Malamud short story, Federman conveys an avuncular ardor for the feisty characters on both sides of the Russ & Daughters counter. . . . He has turned over a bounty of fish tales, immigrant lore, family photos, and recipes, assembling them into a memoir as abundant in charm as the Russ inventory is in gastronomic seductions.”
—Jan Stuart, The Boston Globe

“Much like its author, the Russ & Daughters book is blunt and breezy. Along with family history and Russ & Daughters lore, Federman shares recipes from the haute (lox chowder) to the humble (classic egg cream). There’s also a glossary of fish that’s as much social history as culinary reference—who knew sturgeon once figured in a federal bribery investigation?”
—Michael Kaminer, New York Daily News

“A charming tale of  a Jewish immigrant family whose business grew from humble pushcart origins to the internationally known powerhouse it is today. [The book] bottles Federman’s talent as a master schmoozer and offers a nibble at the Russ & Daughters experience for those who can’t make it to New York’s Lower East Side on a regular basis.”
—Gothamist

“Federman is an engaging narrator, and his consideration of his grandfather’s rise in the world of herring is both honest and charming. . . . He traced his family history by visiting rabbis and aged aunts, talking with longtime customers, and calling on his memory of a childhood spent in the shop. Now that his daughter and nephew run the store, Federman has enough distance to talk about his years behind the counter and write this thoughtful history of both a family and a neighborhood.”
—The Brooklyn Rail

“When I was a child, my father and I would often stop at Russ & Daughters on Sundays, on our way to Brooklyn to visit cousins.  It was there, in that friendly, wonderful store, that I learned the difference between nova and lox, poppy seed and plain, cream cheese and farmer cheese, sable and sturgeon.  And now I am continuing the family tradition.  Jude, my two-year-old granddaughter, just visited the store and started learning about the many types of herring, which she loves.  I will start reading this book to her just as soon as she can enjoy a bagel with Baltic salmon and cream cheese.”
—Martha Stewart

“The grandson of the founder of J. Russ Cut Rate Appetizing (the name changed to Russ & Daughters in 1935) tells a remarkable story of family foresight and resiliency, and gives fascinating details of early life among the teeming streets of New York’s Lower East Side in the first decades of the century. . . . Including precious pictures and recipes, this work offers a savory wealth of social history, told humorously and endearingly.”
—Kirkus Reviews

“The best thing in the world is to go to Russ & Daughters. The next-best thing in the world is to read Russ & Daughters.”
—Oliver Sacks

“Forget the Empire State Building, the Statue of Liberty . . . New York City’s  greatest living institution is very likely Russ & Daughters: a temple of uniquely New York deliciousness, Zen-like perfection, and a repository of generations of wisdom and experience.  Mark Russ Federman’s book is a story not just about the food that made New York great, but a deeply felt personal history. When visiting a new city for the first time, I’ve always asked the question: ‘What do they do here better than anywhere else?’ When visiting New York City for the first time, the answer is always ‘Russ & Daughters.’ ”
—Anthony Bourdain

The Art of the Schmooze

You’re either born a great schmoozer or you’re not. Grandma Russ was always happy to schmooze. Since she spoke so little English, her schmoozing was limited to Yiddish with the pushcart vendors on Orchard Street. They were happy to schmooze with her because she was one of their few customers who never hondled. Grandpa Russ, on the other hand, had neither the time nor the patience to schmooze. But Aunt Hattie and Aunt Ida were great schmoozers; they could charm a herring right out of the barrel. My mom took after her father; no patience for schmoozing there. But my dad was a natural-born schmoozer, and the customers lined up to be waited on by him. I was lucky enough to inherit the family schmoozing gene. Maria is a terrible schmoozer. Whatever the opposite of a schmoozer is, that’s Maria. Fortunately for our business, Niki is an even better schmoozer than I am. Josh is not a natural-born schmoozer. Until he came into the business he was an engineer, and they are not known for their schmoozing skills. But he has other essential qualities. For example, Josh finishes one task before starting another, a definite asset in running a business. Schmoozers, on the other hand, have difficulty getting things done; they’re too busy schmoozing. But as I have watched Josh run the business these past few years, I have seen his ability to schmooze improve along with his slicing skills. Customers now line up to wait for Josh to slice their salmon and listen to their stories. Behind the counter, he has become his Grandpa Herbie, world-renowned salmon slicer and schmoozer.

People who are born schmoozers often go into retail businesses, usually small, family-owned ones. They like, and maybe even need, the personal interactions such places offer. People shop in small retail stores because they, too, like—and maybe need—that same personal interaction. Among people who work in retail, the great schmoozer doesn’t just talk but also knows how to listen. The ability to be a good listener is derived from a basic love of people. This must be genuine. It cannot be faked. There is no doubt in my mind that this joy in listening to people, in hearing their stories, sharing in their nachas and their tsuris, is genetic in origin. The schmoozing gene will soon be mapped.

Some things distinguish a great schmoozer from a merely good one. The ability to make the customer feel as if he or she is the only thing the schmoozer is interested in at that given moment is essential. To achieve this, you yourself must feel that this customer is your friend, and that the interaction is personal as well as commercial. Of course, the schmoozer must not forget that he is running a business, so this is where multitasking comes in. While listening intently, eyes and ears fixed on the customer, the schmoozer will be able to notice that there are dirty spots on the showcase, herrings in disarray, salads that need to be filled in, and a ringing phone that needs to be answered. A truly great schmoozer can direct other people to accomplish these tasks without ever taking his focus away from the customer with whom he is schmoozing. A good memory is essential, even if you are a natural-born schmoozer. Memory for names is a given, not only the name of the customer as he or she walks in the door but the names of the customer’s spouse and children, as well as any tsuris or nachas related during the last visit. A quality schmoozer remembers what the customer bought last time, which part of the fish he prefers, how she likes it sliced. The perfect schmooze must be a seamless resumption of your last conversation, even if the customer’s last visit was six months ago. For example:

The good schmoozer: “Hello, Mrs. Schwartz. How’s your daughter Rebecca?”

The great schmoozer: “Hello, Mrs. Schwartz. How’s your daughter Rebecca? Did she recover from that twisted ankle? Did you help take care of her two kids, Betsy and Andy? Your grandchildren are so adorable. And smart, too.”

The great schmoozer will attempt to bring other customers into the schmooze. When two or more customers are introduced into the schmooze, they are likely to discover things they have in common: their kids go to the same school, their grandparents came from the same shtetl in Poland, they used the same “top” doctor for hip-replacement surgery. This provides them with a more unique experience, a story to tell over the salmon and bagels when they get home. The schmoozer is humble, more of a good listener than a good talker. While the customers may ask the schmoozer personal questions, that is merely a rhetorical device. They don’t really want to hear about you; they want to talk about themselves. And since they are spending their money in your store, your conversation should be about them. The schmoozer must be able to distinguish between nachas and tsuris, and show the appropriate amount of joy or sympathy, depending on the individual situation. This is not always as easy as it seems. Of course, a birth, bris, bar/bat mitzvah, or wedding is clearly a major nachasdik life event that requires a great display of empathetic joy. Illness, death, and investments with Bernie Madoff clearly fit into the tsuris category. But be careful: divorce, which could be tsuris for the son who is being divorced, might be regarded as a joyful occasion by the mother who never liked her daughter-in-law in the first place.

I learned something very interesting during my years of schmoozing with my customers: the less you say, the greater the aura of knowledge and wisdom you acquire. From years of schmoozing, I came to be regarded by some of my customers as a chochom, a wise man, and I was often asked for my opinions about politics, finance, international relations, religion, and even car repair. Of course, true schmoozer and chochom that I am, I would never give them.

Truthfully, beyond the fish we sell, I know very little about anything else. It is assumed that I am a repository of great bits of worldly knowledge just because for thirty years I stood behind the counter in the same store in the same neighborhood and sold the same fish products that my family had been selling for a hundred years. So I try to accept the role with some grace, and have grown a beard—by now a very white beard. I continue to say very little and listen very well, and at least try to look the part.

Stop Kvetching, Start Kvelling, and Enjoy Life With This Story
By Larry Mark MyJewishBooksDotCom
Before I review this book, let's talk about me - just as if we are schmoozing in a line at the counter of an appetizing store on the Lower East Side. I am not a Litvak... well, perhaps I am a half-Litvak, but still, I never ate whitefish or lox until I was at least twenty. And I still have never eaten herring. And yet, I loved this book.

In this book, the author, Mark Russ Federman, the grandson of the founder of Russ & Daughters, Joel Russ, recounts his family's stories from Manhattan's Lower East Side; the founding of his family's cut-rate herring and appetizing store; life in a four-generation family business; and glimpses into the Jewish or Russ family style of retail customer service. And for good measure, he throws in a few recipes (more on this below).

The book opens with a foreword by Calvin Trillin, the famed essayist, author, and humorist. One of Trillin's novels, "Tepper Isn't Going Out" was partially set in a parking space in front of Russ & Daughters' store on East Houston Street. Trillin's foreword alone was worth the book's purchase price to me. He recounts how he would shop for bagels and smoked fish with his daughters as they were growing up. Sure, perhaps he could find fish for a lower price, but where else would one of the Russ daughters drop everything to kvell over the beauty of his kids? Like eating at the now defunct Ratner's or a dairy restaurant, you came as much for the experience as for the food.

Joel Russ (pronounced Rooos originally but who's going to argue with a customer; just say Russ) arrived on Manhattan's Lower East Side from the Austro Hungarian area of Southeastern Poland and started to peddle herring from a barrel. Like many other peddlers, he worked his way up from peddling, pushcart, storefront, and store, to building-ownership. Putting family members to work, and his lovely three daughters (who were much better suited to customer service), helped the business prosper. And for that reason the store became famous as a "& DAUGHTERS", while everyone else was "& SONS." They say the Joel Russ only gave approval to his daughters' choices of husbands based on whether the men could work in the store and carry the heavy herring barrels from the back storage area and kitchen to the front.

For the reader, Federman recreates the world of sawdust covered stores and the transition to linoleum; the demolition of the elevated trains; the postwar flight of the middle class from the LES to the suburbs; the decline of the area into a place filled with crime, poverty, drugs, and prostitution; and its current regeneration or gentrification into a hipster haven of pricey apartments, boutiques, bars, and shops.

Anecdotes abound, as do lessons in service and management, and even managing the managers. Over 30 years ago, Federman joined the business and purchased it from his family and aunts after years as a prosecutor, litigator, and even a tour of duty as a army captain in Vietnam. His nephew and daughter have since purchased the business from him, after their stints in engineering, business, and other endeavors.

The book is true to its title. Federman has had time to reflect on the business instead of just to react to vendors, staff, and customers. The most important lessons I learned from the book are not to lose your focus thinking of a smart retort when slicing fish, or you can end up scarred on your hand; it doesn't matter if it was Russ' idea or his neighbor's suggestion to bring his daughters into the biz, there IS room for multiple truths; never hire a shomer shabbos brother if he is going to convince customers to shop elsewhere; what is the difference between deli and appetizing; if you are going to visit the Strzyzover Rebbe, wear a kippah; if grandpa's idea of customer service to say "Rebbitzen, tog mire a toyveh, fahrlir mein ahdres (lady, do me a favor, lose my address"), then bring some charming females into the business who can schmooze the customers; never grant special favors to any customers, unless they are top doctors; use Swedish mustard when making a beet, apple, and herring salad; and if you bring the fourth generation into the business, they are going to have great ideas for "herring pairings," websites, and marketing.

There are thirteen (13) recipes. They are for Mushroom Barley Soup (uses dried and fresh shrooms); Lox Eggs and Onions; Herring in Parchment (adapted from the former chef at the Swedish consulate); Beet, Apple and Herring Salad (uses Swedish mustard and a sour pickle); Fruit Studel; Egg Cream; Cheese Blintzes (uses cinnamon); Whitefish and Baked Salmon Salad (do you know what kippered salmon means?); Smoked Salmon Tartare (use Gaspe Atlantic or Western Nova); Potato Latkes, Bagel Chips; Bagel Pudding with Prunes and Raisins; and Lox Chowder (uses heavy cream and chicken stock, so kosher readers should substitute).

I recommend this book to any foodie or lox eater, anyone who grew up in a family business or ate a pickle or a herring from a barrel, and anyone who needs to read a good anecdote or misses standing in line with a tough, picky customer who imagines all salespeople and store owners to be gonifs.

A great read for foodies and New Yorkers of all religious persusions.
By Biblio-Nut
For any Jew growing up in New York after WWII a weekly visit to the appetizer store was a necessary ritual. There you could find all varieties of smoked fish and where the cream cheese was cut to order from a large slab. A few doors down you could buy your bagels and bialys for the week. In today's supermarket world the smoked sturgeon doesn't exist, the lox comes only in one or two varieties, the cream cheese is sold in small containers, and no one ever heard of a bialy. This memoir is the story of a family tradition and business that survived through persistence and innovation in a time of changing populations and neighborhoods. Fortunately, the author tells his story with engaging prose and great humor. The recipes are an added bonus.

"DELIGHTFUL, CHARMING, INSPIRING, AND ENTERTAINING!"
By Author/Reviewer Geri Ahearn
After living in New York forty-five years, born in Brooklyn, and spending most of my life there, there are special memories one can never forget. As a child growing-up with my cousins and my relatives all living in different sections of Brooklyn, everyone knew the famous name of 'Russ & Daughters.' When I think of one of New York's finest stores, this name has its amazing history. This incredible book tells the triumphant story of an immigrant beginning a family business that became the talk of the century, and a respected, famous name that anyone from New York could relate to. The heartwarming story delivers a colorful portrait of where it all began to good times, and bad times as well. The generations of family, the devotion, and the fight to keep it going through times of struggle and the Great Depression is an unforgettable story of remarkable family tradition. My Dad, and my aunts and uncles always raved about the service it provided to the community, even during changing times within the neighborhoods. You didn't have to be Jewish to appreciate this appetizer store, known to many as a farmer's market for smoked and pickled fish. The journey for the family tradition was as exciting and delightful as much as all the regular customers enjoyed visiting this store, and Sundays it became a conversational social event for many. One hard-working family began the business, and through all the years of tough times, it kept going as it continued to grow more-and-more admiration. The older folks today, who grew up in Brooklyn, remember very well how enchanting and inspiring this tradition became to millions of people over the years. The reminiscences of family history is motivating as it brings a smile to many who understand its symbolic background. In addition, there are delicious recipes that are as enjoyable as the intriguing story. When I think of salmon, chopped liver, cream cheese and pickled fish,'Russ & Daughters' leave behind refreshing memories of tradition. Martha Stewart portrays the true "Russ & Daughters." They are remembered as a legacy. One of my favorites from this book is the mouth-watering Potato Latkes. Enjoyable read, entertaining from beginning to end, with stunning photos of recipes, and family. Highly recommended!

A must-have when you're heading out on your own
By D. Oriti
This is the book I wish I had when I first moved out on my own. It covers all the stuff everybody should know about safely and correctly maintaining our cars to computers to house maintenance, such as painting, plumbing, and electrical, and it does so in a very eye-catching, easy to read, and humorous manner. Not only is it filled with useful information, but it's just plain fun to read too. It taught me quite a few things I wish I'd known a few years back. Highly recommended!

Funny and useful
By D. Nelson
I did something with my advanced copy of "The Portable Dad" that I seldom do with an advanced copy - read the whole thing. It's very funny, and useful. It's amazing how much I didn't know about basic maintenance and repair. The author calls this a how-to for people who don't really care how-to. That captures it well. It gives me the minimum info I need to keep my stuff working. And it gives it to me clearly and with a sense of humor. I'll keep "The Portable Dad" handy.

Was der Staat tun muss: Die alte Klientelpolitik gehört in Rente.

By Helen R. Edwards
Very well researched about a specific time in history and region. The historical details sounded convincing. As almost always with historical novels the heroine is thoroughly modern in her outlook and sensibilities.I guess it not only would be very difficult to put oneself into the mindset of a person living in a different time, but the reader, I, would not tolerate it as well....

From Publishers Weekly
Spragins's ingenious book is the rare self-help volume that young women would elect to read and decidedly enjoy. The author profiles 35 highly accomplished women and asks them to write a letter of counsel or encouragement addressed to their younger selves. The result is a collection of life directives that are highly personal and disarmingly honest. The contributors—who include actress Jessica Alba, activist Zainab Salbi and comic book artist Ariel Schrag—are stars in their own right, but their letters reveal that even winners have problems—the same fears, concerns and shortcomings as anyone else. And in many cases they are still struggling—which raises the question: how wise can women in their 20s and 30s (no matter how accomplished) be? Very, it turns out. These artists, athletes and entrepreneurs compassionately address bad relationships, bullies, eating disorders and crises of faith without ever sounding jaded or condescending. This book offers sound advice and is highly recommended for women just starting out. (May)

Everyday Wisdom, Helpful Reminders
By K. Brown
The by-product of a good book is one that keeps you thinking of the subject long after you finish. "If I'd Known Then" does that by stimulating the inner conversation we all need to have with ourselves. The everyday wisdom you'll find solicits the reminders we all need to constantly remember - about life and love, success and failure.

It's not about the book, but about what you do with it. And since you'll get out of it what you put into it, I suggest you take the author quite literally and encourage the young women in your life to write a letter to themselves. They'll wish they had and be glad they did.

Amazing Inspiration
By Melanie Hicks Tozzi
There are few things in life that can transend everyday distractions long enough to actually inspire me - but this book did. As a 30 year old myself, I felt a mirrored twinge of heartbreak, longing, confusion and self exploration that is written so poignantly by these women. I recommend it to anyone and everyone who wants a little reminder of how you became who you are today.

Courtesy of Mother Daughter Book Club.com
By Cynthia Hudson
Have you ever wished you could write a letter to yourself when you were younger to give yourself hope or encouragement to get through a difficult time? That's what the 35 women did who appear in If I'd Know Then, Women in Their 20s and 30s Write Letters to Their Younger Selves.

Readers will recognize many of the writers as well as receive introductions to remarkable women they may not have heard of before. The letters are all heartfelt, with the authors talking directly to the young girls they once were. It's a wonderful reminder that no matter how famous or wealthy or popular someone is, we all share many of the same insecurities, doubts, fears and self-imposed limitations.

This book is part of the What I Know Now series, and I think it's a great addition for younger readers. I was particularly struck by the story of Mindy Lam, who was labeled an unlucky child when she was born in China and treated harshly during her childhood. She overcame incredible hurdles to come to this country, learn to speak English and find a way to support herself before stumbling upon an idea for creating jewelry that has made her successful beyond her imagining. All the stories are inspiring.

Moms in a mother-daughter book club can write letters to their younger selves as a meeting activity to inspire discussion. And girls could also think about issues they're dealing with now that they may see differently in a few years.

I believe girls in 8th grade and up would enjoy reading If I'd Known Then.

Strategic Intuition: The Creative Spark in Human Achievement (Columbia Business School Publishing), by William Duggan

How "Aha!" really happens.

When do you get your best ideas? You probably answer "At night," or "In the shower," or "Stuck in traffic." You get a flash of insight. Things come together in your mind. You connect the dots. You say to yourself, "Aha! I see what to do." Brain science now reveals how these flashes of insight happen. It's a special form of intuition. We call it strategic intuition, because it gives you an idea for action-a strategy.

Brain science tells us there are three kinds of intuition: ordinary, expert, and strategic. Ordinary intuition is just a feeling, a gut instinct. Expert intuition is snap judgments, when you instantly recognize something familiar, the way a tennis pro knows where the ball will go from the arc and speed of the opponent's racket. (Malcolm Gladwell wrote about this kind of intuition in Blink.) The third kind, strategic intuition, is not a vague feeling, like ordinary intuition. Strategic intuition is a clear thought. And it's not fast, like expert intuition. It's slow. That flash of insight you had last night might solve a problem that's been on your mind for a month. And it doesn't happen in familiar situations, like a tennis match. Strategic intuition works in new situations. That's when you need it most.

Everyone knows you need creative thinking, or entrepreneurial thinking, or innovative thinking, or strategic thinking to succeed in the modern world. All these kinds of thinking happen through flashes of insight& mdash;strategic intuition. And now that we know how it works, you can learn to do it better. That's what this book is about.

Over the past ten years, William Duggan has conducted pioneering research on strategic intuition and for the past three years has taught a popular course at Columbia Business School on the subject. He now gives us this eye-opening book that shows how strategic intuition lies at the heart of great achievements throughout human history: the scientific and computer revolutions, women's suffrage, the civil rights movement, modern art, microfinance in poor countries, and more. Considering the achievements of people and organizations, from Bill Gates to Google, Copernicus to Martin Luther King, Picasso to Patton, you'll never think the same way about strategy again.

Three kinds of strategic ideas apply to human achievement:

* Strategic analysis, where you study the situation you face

* Strategic intuition, where you get a creative idea for what to do

* Strategic planning, where you work out the details of how to do it.

There is no shortage of books about strategic analysis and strategic planning. This new book by William Duggan is the first full treatment of strategic intuition. It's the missing piece of the strategy puzzle that makes essential reading for anyone interested in achieving more in any field of human endeavor.

It answers a very particular question
By Gregory Fung
I've been looking for a book that answers the question "How do I go from my SWOT analysis (a chart that puts on one page strengths, weaknesses, external opportunities and threats) to a plan that really works?" Most of the books I've read recommend that a manager work up their analysis and then use it to write their plan. But I've noticed that going from analysis to an awesome game-winning plan is extremely hard to do, and is something I and my managers do with less success than I would like.

This book addresses my very specific but important question by describing what the right person needs to do to set the right conditions to have the right flash of insight, and how our usual planning techniques actually go against this natural process. Duggan makes a clear and non-technical argument and, for what it's worth, seems to match my experience.

The few shortcomings of the book, in my mind, are that it is difficult to clearly apply this approach to an organizational setting. His one example using the GE "What Works" matrix is a bit thin and without clear results, making me wonder why he could not find a better example with real results, and why GE ultimately discontinued the method. Secondly, this book does not help someone become more able to have flashes of insight. Setting the right conditions is great, but it is no guarantee of brilliance. Perhaps this would be a question for his next book.

Overall, I loved this book because it gave a solid framework for an important and longstanding question I've had, but I only gave 4 stars because of the shortcomings mentioned above.

A must read for anyone doing strategy
By James E. Schrager
I teach strategy in graduate business school and have done so for over twenty years. I routinely judge strategy books to be without much practical use. This book takes an entirely different approach from most others and is thoroughly successful. Rather than simply tell stories or provide backward looking analytical tools, Prof. Duggan takes you inside great strategy decisions and shows how they were made. The first one he details is amazing, but it takes several before you really understand what it is all about. The more the better, as each example shows the thoughtful reader yet another way the concepts work. A must read for anyone who wants to work on making better decisions, rather than just analyzing those from the past. This book has the potential to change the way we think about strategic decisions. Many students who have read it have reported to me they are unable to put it down.

Another Book Review from the Aleph Blog
By David Merkel
We all know how to be logical; at least most of us do. But logic only takes us so far. Real progress comes through those who are willing to take old ideas, combine them, and use them to solve an unrelated existing problem.

Breakthroughs do not come from ordinary activity, but from those that are willing to look beyond, and consider new possibilities. They take what is known from the past, and generalize it to a new situation.

Even in writing the closing, the author writes, "My opportunity to write this book arose from when I saw a gap in the field of strategy at the same time that I saw the existing elements that might combine to fill that gap. In all these chapters, not a single idea, not a single example, is my own. I borrowed them all. But the combination is new, and I am grateful for the opportunity to present it here to you."

The author looked at many different areas of human endeavor, looking for commonalities for when leaps of progress were made. The areas were science, war, entrepreneurship, the arts, and social work.

It's not enough to be knowledgeable about the past, and to know the theories of the present. Can you take them to come up with a solution to a current problem, by using ideas from one area of knowledge, and apply them to an area where they have not been previously applied?

What is ordinary is when you know a goal, and create a plan to achieve that goal. If you have enough resources, and your plan is adequate you will succeed at an ordinary goal.

What is extraordinary is trying to achieve something that is totally new. Those that do so achieve it by using what is already known (by some) in a totally new way.

Thus, rather than looking at the goal, consider that the goal might not be achievable, but something close to it might be. Look at many goals and see whether there isn't one that has greater impact that you could achieve. (I wish I could have revised my dissertation topic in mid-stream.)

I have experienced this in my own life. My biggest successes came through using ideas from other fields and applying them to the insurance industry, which is a very stodgy place.

When you finish with the book, you will have a lot of new ideas for how to creatively attack hard problems. That's what makes this book compelling. But it's methods are not a panacea; they won't solve every problem.

Quibbles

The trouble with a book like this is that it picks and chooses. Much progress does come from the ordinary application of logic. But many of the jumps of progress do not come from applying ideas from other fields, but by pure accident. Something anomalous occurs, and no one has a good explanation for it. At such a point, new theories are proposed and tested. This is more like ordinary science, and less like what the author proposes.

Also, few of us have the luxury of being able to be flexible about what targets we aim for, or have knowledge of fields far from the target that have some influence on it.

Who would benefit from this book: If you have to solve a hard problem, and you don't see a way to solve it, this book may help you do it.

at the heart of the Snake-Eyes saga
By matt
Having read these back when they first came out back in the early 80s, I was captivated by the whole ninja thing (so big at the time) and the nuanced story line of Larry Hama with its sympathetic treatment of Vietnam vets, seemingly prescient look at terrorism and just good overall artwork. Volume three was especially exciting to read because it contains issues 21, 24, 25 and 26, which present the background to the mysterious Snake-Eyes and Storm Shadow (Arashikage). Very cool if you `get it' and probably a little juvenile if you do not `get it' (in which case I wonder why you are reading this at all).

Certainly some good 1980s story-telling here and the artwork jumps off the glossy pages. Very much worth having to enjoy it all over again.

Here are a couple books that might make the ninja story line even more interesting and meaningful: The Ninja and Their Secret Fighting Art and Secrets from the Ninja Grandmaster: Revised and Updated Edition

Another excellent Volume!
By yenrab
Volume 3 is a collection of the Marvel comic issues 21-30 from March 1984 - December 1984. This volume is very beautiful with great, bold colors on each page.
These 10 comics introduce the following characters: Storm Shadow, Duke, Roadblock, Firefly, Wild Weasel, Zartan, Buzzer, Ripper, Torch, Cutter, Mutt & Junkyard, Tripwire, Deep Six, Timber, Crimson Guard, and Spirit(yes, there could be others I missed). Larry Hamma was the scripter on all the issues in this volume.
Issue 21 is "the silent issue" and it is without a word. A lot of ninja stuff going on. Pretty cool issue.
Overall I see no errors or missing pages. If you grew up in the 80s like me and want to reconnect with the comics, check out this volume. I have the original comics and so this is a great way to read them without messing up the originals.
Keep in mind to those that may think these collect newer comics; they are not. These comics are around 25 years old and this volume brings them back to life beautifully.

GI Joe doesn't get much better than this
By Kid Kyoto
By the time the 2nd year of GI Joe rolled around writer Larry Hama really his stride. This book has some important issues that set the stage for years of stories. This volume reprints issues 21-30 of the original Marvel comics series.

The first story is the famous 'Silent Interlude'. I've read that deadlines were tight and Hama had to find a way to get an issue out faster than usual, so he wrote a 'silent' issue with no dialogue and penciled it himself. While Japanese comics have a tradition of long periods without dialogue, American comics tended to fill every panel with words. Even in the middle of a fight characters would recite their life stories or debate ethics. Silent Interlude gave audiences 22 pages of ninjas fighting without a word to break the action. I have to admit as a kid this was an issue I refused to buy (no words! what a ripoff!) but as an adult I really admire Hama for challenging convention.

This volume also has the two-part origin of Snakes Eyes and Storm Shadow, creating an epic story of the Vietnam War, ninja clans, assassination and secrets that would run through the rest of the series.

The book also has the capture (and escape) of Cobra Commander and swamp warfare in the Everglades.

The one weak point is the art. Deadlines must have been rough on this book, artists change almost every issue and most of them are mediocre.

But overall these are some great stories that rise far above the level you would expect from a toy-tie-in comic.
