Learning to Curse: Essays in Early Modern Culture (Routledge Classics), by Stephen Greenblatt

Stephen Greenblatt argued in these celebrated essays that the art of the Renaissance could only be understood in the context of the society from which it sprang. His approach - 'New Historicism' - drew from history, anthropology, Marxist theory, post-structuralism, and psychoanalysis and in the process, blew apart the academic boundaries insulating literature from the world around it.

Learning to Curse charts the evolution of that approach and provides a vivid and compelling exploration of a complex and contradictory epoch.

A new view of art.....
By Dianne Foster
In LEARNING TO CURSE, Stephen Greenblatt presents a collection of his essays on the works of Shakespeare, Spencer and other authors of the 16th century. The book takes it's title from his first essay, an examination of "The Tempest" by Shakespeare.
Greenblatt asks if one can understand a work of art without reference to the artist, his audience, and the social context of period within which the artist worked. He also asks if different audiences in different periods have had similar reactions to the work or even if different people in the same audience in the same period have had the the same reaction. Does a work of art have an intrinsic value that transcends the individual experience over time?
On the other hand, Greenblatt says that while the historical context within which the work of art was created is important, it is critical the scholar realize history is not fixed. Using ideas gleaned from the "new historicism" as well as ethnographic and sociological notions, Greenblatt provokes the reader to rethink the idea of 'historical context'.
He says his critical approach has been concerned with recovering "as far as possible the historical circumstances" of aesthetic production without viewing history "as a stable prefabricated background against which literary texts can be placed." Instead, he sees the historical context as a "dense network of evolving and often contradictory social forces."
The essays in this little volume investigate and interpret a series of literary works by authors from Shakespeare to Martin Luther and Thomas Moore. Greenblatt has included a interesting essay on the case of Martin Guerre in 14th Century France in which he explores the ideas of crime and capital punishment in association with the theft of personal identity in the Middle Ages.

I can't believe you said that
By flapping in traumatized laughter puddle
On a scale from stillborn to born with a finger finger cosmic pogo stick up brain hopping into a conversation about torture, Stephen J. Greenblatt was born in a society of copycat crimes ready to figure out how stories generate pleasure. Life has words, and literary life reflects the psychological motivations that clash in conflicts of subjective intensities. Religion is a higher swindle that pops up in the third chapter for a character named Karl Marx.

Wounded in battle, Major Reese Dewar returns to England--but his injuries are nothing compared to his shattered heart

Years ago, love-struck Reese departed his home at Briarwood with a promise from raven-haired Elizabeth Clemens that she would make a life with him upon his return. But mere months later, she married the Earl of Aldridge, attaining wealth and status Reese could never match. Memories of that betrayal make his homecoming far more bitter than sweet.

Seeing Elizabeth on his doorstep dressed in widow's garb twists the knife even deeper. But fear for her young son's safety has overcome her pride: she begs Reese for protection from those who would see the boy dead to possess his fortune. He agrees to an uneasy alliance, sensing Elizabeth still harbors deep secrets--and Reese knows that he's placing himself in danger...of losing his heart all over again.

From Booklist
Elizabeth Holloway, widow of an abusive nobleman, is only interested in one thing—protecting her young son. Unfortunately, her greedy, amoral in-laws have moved in with Elizabeth, and now they’re drugging her so they can have guardianship of their nephew, and his money. With what might be her last coherent action, Elizabeth takes the boy and seeks shelter with her former lover, Reese Dewar. Reese hates Elizabeth. When he left to serve in the military, she married another man. However, Reese is a man of honor, and because of this, he agrees to protect his former lover and her son. But Elizabeth has a secret—the boy is really his. Danger, intrigue, steamy love scenes, and an exciting secondary plot make this a perfect book for fans of historical romances. This is the second book in Martin’s entertaining Brides trilogy (Royal’s Bride, 2009; and Rule’s Bride, due out in May 2010). --Shelley Mosley

England
September, 1855

The crisp black taffeta skirt of her mourning gown rustled as she walked out of the dress shop a few doors in front of him.

Reese Dewar froze where he stood, the silver-headed cane in his hand forgotten, along with the ache in his leg. Rage took its place, dense and heavy, hot and seething.

Sooner or later, he had known he would see her. He had told himself it wouldn't matter, that seeing her again wouldn't affect him. She meant nothing to him, not anymore, not for nearly eight years.

But as she stepped off the wooden walkway, a ray of autumn sunlight gleamed against the jet-black curls on her shoulders and anger boiled up inside him, fury unlike he had known in years.

He watched her continue toward her sleek black four-horse carriage, the crossed-saber Aldridge crest glinting in gold on the side. She paused for a moment as one of the footmen hurried to open the door and he realized she wasn't alone. A small, dark-haired boy, nearly hidden in the voluminous folds of her skirt, hurried along beside her. She urged him up the iron steps and the child disappeared inside the elegant coach.

Instead of climbing the stairs herself, the woman turned and looked at him over her shoulder, her gray eyes finding him with unerring accuracy, as if she could feel his cold stare stabbing into the back of her neck. She gasped when she realized who it was, though she must have known, in a village as small as Swansdowne, one day their paths would cross.

Surely she had heard the gossip, heard of his return to Briarwood, the estate he had inherited from his maternal grandfather.

The estate he had meant to share with her.

Their eyes locked, hers troubled, filled with some emotion he could not read. His own gaze held the bitterness and anger he made no effort to hide. He loathed her for what she had done, hated her with every ounce of his being.

It shocked him.

He had thought those feelings long past. For most of the last eight years, he had been away from England, a major in the British cavalry. He had fought in foreign wars, commanded men, sent some of them to their deaths. He had been wounded and nearly died himself.

He was home now, his injured leg making him no longer fit to serve. That and the vow he had made to his dying father. One day he would come back to Briarwood. He would make the estate his home as he had once intended.

Reese would rather have stayed in the army. He didn't belong in the country. He wasn't sure where he belonged anymore and he loathed his feelings of uncertainty nearly as much as he loathed Elizabeth.

She swallowed, seemed to sway a little on her feet as she turned away, climbed the steps and settled herself inside the carriage. She hadn't changed. With her raven hair, fine pale features, and petite, voluptuous figure, Elizabeth Clemens Holloway, Countess of Aldridge, was as beautiful at six-and-twenty as she had been at eighteen.

As she had been when she had declared her love and accepted his proposal of marriage.

His gaze followed the coach as it rolled off toward Aldridge Park, the palatial estate that had belonged to her late husband, Edmund Holloway, Earl of Aldridge. Aldridge had died last year at the age of thirty-three, leaving his wife a widow, leaving her with a son.

Reese spat into the dirt at his feet. Just the thought of Aldridge in Elizabeth's bed made him sick to his stomach.

Five years his senior, Edmund was already an earl when he had competed with Reese for Elizabeth's affections. She had been amused by the attentions of the handsome, sophisticated aristocrat, but she had been in love with Reese.

Or so she had said.

The carriage disappeared round a bend in the road and Reese's racing pulse began to slow. He was amazed at the enmity he still felt toward her. He was a man who had taught himself control and that control rarely abandoned him. He would not allow it to happen again.

Leaning heavily on his cane, the ache in his leg beginning to reach through the fury that had momentarily consumed him, he made his way to his own conveyance and slowly climbed aboard. Aldridge's widow and her son had no place in his life. Elizabeth was dead to him and had been for nearly eight years.

As dead as her husband, the man she had betrayed Reese to marry.

And he would never forgive her.

Elizabeth leaned against the tufted red velvet seat of her carriage. Her heart was hammering, battering against the wall of her chest. Dear God, Reese.

She had known she would see him. She had prayed it would happen at some distant time in the future. Sometime after she had come to grips with the fact that he was living in the house they had once meant to share.

Dear God, Reese. There was a day she thought never to see him again. Rumors had surfaced. Reese, a major in the cavalry, was missing in action somewhere in the Crimea. There were whispers he was dead. Then he had returned and the news had swept the countryside.

He was back at Briarwood, wounded in the war and retired from the army. He was home, living just a few miles from Aldridge Park. She should have been prepared and yet seeing him today…seeing the hatred in his brilliant blue eyes, made her chest squeeze with guilt and regret.

She knew how much he hated her. If she hadn't already been certain, she would have seen it in his icy stare today. Every pore in his sun-bronzed face exuded loathing. Every angry thought seemed to reach her across the distance between them. She hadn't seen him since that day nearly eight years ago that he had come home on leave and discovered she had wed another man.

Not since the day he had called her a whore and vowed that one day she would pay for her lies and deceit.

She had paid. Dear God, she had paid every day since she had married Edmund Holloway. She had done as her father demanded and wed a man not of her choosing.

But she had never stopped loving Reese.

Her heart squeezed. She thought of his hard, handsome features, so masculine, so incredibly attractive. In some ways, he looked the same as he had as a young man of twenty, tall and black-haired, his body hard-muscled and lean, his features sharply defined.

And yet he was a completely different man. He had been a little shy in his courtship of her, a little uncertain. Now he wore his masculinity like a comfortable shirt; it was clear in his unwavering stare, the way his gaze too boldly assessed her. There was a harshness in his features that hadn't been there when he was young, and a confidence and raw sense of authority that only made him more attractive.

"Mama…?"

Jared's small voice reached her from across the carriage. "Yes, sweetheart?" A headache had begun to form behind her eyes and she rubbed her temple against the pain.

"Who was that man?" Her son sat quietly on the opposite seat, his voice little more than a whisper. He wouldn't be talking at all, she knew, if he hadn't sensed her distress.

She forced herself to smile and patted the seat beside her. Jared scooted next to her and she settled an arm around his small shoulders.

"Major Dewar is an old friend, sweetheart." A complete and utter falsehood. The man loathed her and she didn't blame him. "He just got out of the army and he is returned to his home."

Jared just looked at her. He didn't ask more, simply gazed at her with his deep-set brown eyes, soulful eyes, she thought. Eyes far too worldly for a child so young, and far too full of loneliness.

Managing a smile, she began to point out the sights along the road as the carriage moved down the lane that cut through the rolling fields. It was mid-September, the leaves turning orange, gold and red. Two small boys played along the roadside tossing a ball back and forth, and Elizabeth pointed them out to Jared.

"Doesn't that look like fun? You like to play ball. Perhaps one of Mrs. Clausen's sons will play with you this afternoon." Mrs. Clausen was the housekeeper, a dear woman raising her daughter's orphaned grandsons, boys eight and nine years old. They liked Jared, but because of his shyness, rarely sought him out. "Why don't you ask them when we get home?"

Jared said nothing, but his gaze remained on the boys and the look in his eyes made a lump rise in her throat. As long as he remained at Aldridge Park, Jared would never come out of the shell he had built to protect himself. It was one more reason she had to leave.

Not leave, Elizabeth silently corrected. Escape.

As long as her brother-in-law and his wife, Mason and Frances Holloway, lived at Aldridge Park, she was a prisoner in her own home.

Her headache continued to worsen, pounding away inside her skull as it often did these days. She was afraid of Mason. He was the sort of man who stood a little too close, touched her a little too often. She needed to leave, but she was certain he would simply come after her. She had no idea how far he would go to keep her and Jared—now the Earl of Aldridge—under his control. But she was certain there was little he would not do.

She was frightened. Not only for herself but for her son.

An image arose of Reese Dewar, strong, capable, a veteran of the war, the sort of man who would protect his family no matter the cost.

But Reese wasn't her husband and never would be.

And she had no one to blame but herself.

Reese returned to Briarwood, his mood dark and brooding. He tried not to think of Elizabeth but he couldn't seem to get her out of his head. What was there about her? How had she managed to keep a stranglehold over him for so many years? Why had no other woman been able to pierce the wall of his heart as she had done?

His manservant, Timothy Daniels, a brawny young corporal who had served with him for several years before being injured and sent home, arrived in the study just then.

"You are returned," Daniels said. "Is there anything you need, sir?" Tim had been out of work and hungry when he had appeared at Reese's door. In a few short weeks, he had become dedicated to Reese's welfare. With this damnable leg slowing him down, Reese was glad to have a man he could count on.

"I'm fine, Tim."

"Let me know if you need me."

Reese scowled. "I imagine I can survive a few hours studying these bloody damned ledgers." Though in truth, he hated paperwork and would far rather be out of doors, which Timothy, being a military man, seemed to understand.

"Aye, sir. Like I said—"

"That will be all, corporal." Growing tired of the young man's overprotectiveness, Reese snapped out the words in his firmest military voice.

"Aye, sir." The door closed quietly, leaving Reese alone in the wood-paneled room. The study was his sanctuary, a comfortable chamber lined with books, a warm, inviting, masculine place where a fire blazed in the hearth and he could insulate himself from the memories that crept into other parts of the house.

In the days of their courtship, Elizabeth had been to Briarwood more than once. She loved the ivy that covered the white plaster walls of the manor and hung from the porch outside the front door, she had said. She loved the steep slate roof with its whimsical chimney pots that made the house look like a fairy tale dwelling.

She had made plans to paint the drawing room a pale shade of rose and add lace curtains, to hang flowered silk wallpaper behind the sofa. She loved the master's suite, she told him, loved how sunny it was, the way it looked out over the garden. She couldn't wait to share his big four-poster bed, a gift his grandfather had commissioned for his bride-to-be.

That thought led to one he didn't wish to recall and his loins began to fill. Bloody hell. All these years and seeing her once made him want her again. He forced himself to remember the way she had told him how much she loved him and how happy she would be to live at Briarwood as his wife.

Lies. All of them.

Just weeks after he had left for his assignment in London, she had broken her promise to marry him. Instead she had wed an earl, a man of untold wealth, and abandoned the younger son of a duke, a man who could provide a pleasant home and sufficient income but would never be extravagantly rich.

Reese ground his jaw. Since his return, thoughts of Elizabeth had begun to haunt him, memories he had buried years ago. Two days after he had discovered the news of her marriage, he had left Wiltshire County for good, gone back to London and asked to serve in the cavalry, knowing he would be assigned to duty somewhere far from English shores.

If he hadn't been wounded, if he hadn't promised his father, he would be there still.

His hand fisted on the top of the desk. Reese dragged in a deep breath and forced his mind back to the present. The ledgers sat open in front of him. He forced himself to concentrate and began to skim the pages. He would have to conquer his painful past and concentrate on the future if he meant to fulfill his obligations and make the fallow fields of Briarwood productive again.

Reese intended to see it done.

With her young son, Jared, walking close beside her, Elizabeth entered the magnificent entry of the huge Georgian mansion, Aldridge Park, her late husband's country estate. The property and all others entailed to the earldom, along with Edmund's vast fortune, now belonged to Jared, the recently titled seventh Earl of Aldridge.

The sound of footsteps echoing on the black-and16

Kat Martin white marble floor drew her attention and Elizabeth looked up to see her sister-in-law, Frances Holloway, also dressed in black, float into the entry to greet them.

Frances's lips flattened out in disapproval. "I expected you home hours ago. Where have you been?" She was a thin woman, with high cheekbones and a long, narrow nose. Her greatest asset was her strength of will. Frances managed to turn things to suit her purpose no matter how difficult they might be, probably the reason her husband, Mason, had married her.

"I told you Jared and I were going into the village." Elizabeth had given up any attempt at being civil to Frances some months back. The woman disliked her and had since the day she had delivered Edmund a son, making it impossible for Mason to inherit the title. "I had some shopping to do. It took longer than I expected." And lately she hadn't been feeling quite well. It felt good to be out in the fresh air, out of the house.

But that, like the length of time she had spent, was none of Frances's business.

"Jared's tutor has been looking for him. We don't want him getting behind in his lessons."

Elizabeth's arm went protectively around her small son's shoulders. "He's going outside to play for a while. Then he can do his lessons."

Jared looked up at her, his eyes big and dark. "I'll do them now, Mama. Marcus and Benny prob'ly won't want to play with me, anyway."

"But—"

Didn't fulfill the promise
By bijou2311
Before Reese went to war he and Elizabeth were in love. But soon after he left, she married another man. He is heart-broken and furious and never forgives her. Eight years later, he returns home from war to fulfill a promise to his dying father. Elizabeth is now a widow with a young son. When Elizabeth turns to Reese for help, he must deal with his anger and put the well-being of her and her son before vengeance on the woman who broke his heart.

That is basically what the summary of the book on the back says (in my own words). Sounds very interesting right? Well unfortunately it doesn't quite meet the promise. Reese is just too full of anger in my opinion. He was physically scarred by the war, but apparently it left no mental scars - he is far more hurt by Elizabeth's marriage to another man EIGHT YEARS AGO!!! He still hasn't gotten over it - it just seemed odd he had held on to the anger that long. And Elizabeth was sort of a wishy washy heroine whose one saving grace was that he loved her son (in my opinion).

Here's how I think the summary should have read. *********CAUTION THERE MAY BE SPOILERS BELOW**********

Before Reese went to war, he and Elizabeth were in love. They had an 'understanding' because her father refused to agree to the marriage. Instead of staying and pleading his case, Reese decides to go to war (keep in mind it was voluntary on his part). However, before he leaves he sleeps with her and never stops to find out if there are any consequences; just ups and leaves and expects Elizabeth to wait on him. Of course, upon finding herself in trouble, Elizabeth turns to her father who orders her to marry another man. With few altneratives Elizabeth does, presumably after much turmoil. What ensures next is years of torture for both Elizabeth and her son. When Reese returns home he is still carrying a grudge against Elizabeth. When she shows up on his doorstep, sick and terrified, he lets her in. However, Reese doesn't have the best intentions - he means to make her his mistress. How could Elizabeth not fall in love with this new and improved Reese?

*********************************END SPOILERS********************

Honestly, I found both Elizabeth and Reese disappointing. And like other reviewers, I found it sad that so many people thought Elizabeth had something to be guilty about. Should she have told Reese the truth - yes! However, keep in mind it wasn't like he was down the road or in the next county. It isn't like letter would have gotten to him the next day. Honestly, it was very disconcerting that his aunt continued to berate Elizabeth - like a woman in that day and age would have had any choice in what happened.

I enjoyed Royal's story more than this one, but this book was still decent. I enjoyed seeing more of Rule, the youngest brother. Also, the secondary romance was very interesting. I think I would have much rather read the story of Travis and Anna than Elizabeth and Reese. Still, if you read the first one and plan to read the third, you might as well pick this up or borrow it from the library. If you can get over the urge to cosh Reese and smack some spine into Elizabeth, you will find a few hours of pleasant, if not original or wildly enjoyable, distraction.

have a nice cup of misery....
By retroredux
as a lifelong Romance Reader, I will admit, "agony" romances have never appealed to me. Why would anyone want to read through 300 pages of hate, anger and revenge so you can maybe get "rewarded" with 20-30 pages of happily ever after at the very end? This books has misery in spades. After the first two chapters I was ready for counseling, not to mention the characters need for some-LOL! Totally skipworthy. Zero stars.

Decent writing, but very dull and predictable.
By R. Murphy
Not really spoilers, but kind of.

Hero and heroine love each other, but heroine is pressured into marrying another man. Hero is heartbroken, and heroine is trapped in a miserable and abusive marriage. She has a child, but (shocker!) it is the hero's! Vows to carry secret to grave. Wicked husband dies, but heroine and son are threatened by wicked brother-in-law -- flees to hero. Marriage of convenience, tying up all loose ends.

This book essentially hits every single trope in the genre. Nothing is a surprise -- if anything, I kept hoping that Martin might manage to do one thing or another differently, but no. Nothing. Everything was predictable, right down to every reaction, fight, and love scene.

Kat Martin is a decent writer -- this isn't poorly written, but it's just uninteresting, which is a real let-down from what was written on the back. There are a lot of writers in the genre right now that can take a very tired plotline like this and turn it into something exciting and fun -- Liz Carlyle, Elizabeth Hoyt, even Eloisa James -- but Martin just isn't one of them. She needs plot twists to help her books, and unfortunately this just didn't have any. All of the characters are stock and painfully predictable (particularly the son, Jared, who was so painfully one-dimensional. he does nothing but stand quietly in corners and be shy, unless he *sees a horse*. because he *loves horses*. *just like his real father*. good grief). Elizabeth, our heroine, is a limp noodle who dithers, whines, and whimpers about her mistakes. Reese, our hero, grinds his teeth, scowls, and then does everything possible to try and sleep with Elizabeth. Also, if I'd read one more line about how scarred Elizabeth was about sex (certainly understandable, with a husband like that) but that Reese "knew" that her "passionate nature" would overcome it, I would've been sick. I was no fan of Elizabeth, but Reese spent a good portion of this book trying to pressure her far past her comfort zone. A little more patience on his part might've been helpful. The abused widow is familiar territory in a romance novel, but Martin needed to temper her hero a bit.

Some subplots that occur in the later half of the book are interesting, but the core couple are a snooze-fest. There are much better romances to read.

Perfect if you're not quite ready for vegetarian!
By Sage Mackenzie
My husband's cholesterol is through the roof!!! So we both decided we wanted to try going without red meat for a while. I looked into a lot of vegetarian cookbooks but they were so off-the-wall and not very realistic for a family with 2 school age boys. It was so hard to find any recipes for "normal" easy cooking that didn't require weird or bizzare ingredients!! Thats why I love this cookbook! The recipes are simple and DELICIOUS!!! It's worth every penny! We can't wait to see how this will impact his cholesterol levels!!

So good one wasn't enough!
By Alabama Frosty
As one who has coronary heart disease, I feel qualified to comment on low-fat cooking. No Red Meat is one of my favorite and most-used cookbooks for healthy, delicious meals. The recipes use everyday, common pantry items, and you don't have to be a Julia Childs to follow the instructions. Johnny's Chicken Pot Pie has become my husband's most requested supper, and it can be made in about an hour. When my dog, Gracie, stole my book and ate the covers and the corners (not I know why it's called dog-eared) with the page numbers on them, I couldn't wait to purchase another copy. Try it, you'll love it!

Some very nice recipes. Excellent nutritional info
By Terence P Hutt
I bought this book to help lose weight but when I saw it also lists the sodium, I gave it to my mother-in-law who's on a strict low sodium diet but wasn't adhering to it. The recipes we've tried were excellent and easy to prepare. I really think my Mother-in-law will find it easier to follow her diet, which is a good thing because her life depends on it.
Now I have to buy another copy for myself!

Tell Me How This Ends: General David Petraeus and the Search for a Way Out of Iraq, by Linda Robinson

After a series of disastrous missteps in its conduct of the war, the White House in 2006 appointed General David Petraeus as the Commanding General of the coalition forces. Tell Me How This Ends is an inside account of his attempt to turn around a failing war.

Linda Robinson conducted extensive interviews with Petraeus and his subordinate commanders and spent weeks with key U.S. and Iraqi divisions. The result is the only book that ties together military operations in Iraq and the internecine political drama that is at the heart of the civil war.

Replete with dramatic battles, behind-doors confrontations, and astute analysis, the book tells the full story of the Iraq War’s endgame, and lays out the options that will be facing the next president when he or she takes office in January 2009.

From School Library Journal
Robinson (author in residence, Johns Hopkins Univ.; Masters of Chaos) tackles a subject that has been the focus of the nation's attention since 2003. Although it can be easy to overlook yet another book on Iraq, she brings an insider's perspective to the subject. Based on her reporting, interviews, travels to Iraq, and unpublished sources, her book focuses on both military and political issues, lessons learned in the early years of the war, General Petraeus's approach to the latter phase of the war, the results of his approach, and suggestions for the next administration. Robinson does a great job of refreshing the reader's memories about events in Iraq before and after Petraeus; however, her own right-leaning political beliefs occasionally come through, and some readers may find her tone one-sided. For those less well versed in the Iraq War, a map and a list with the "Principal Cast of Characters" come in handy. Recommended for larger public and academic libraries.—Jenny Seftas, Southwest Florida Coll. Lib., Fort Myers

Review
“New York Times Notable Book of the Year”

James Traub, New York Times Book Review, October 5, 2008
“…the first book about this new Iraq. It’s a first-rate piece of work, probing and conscientious.”

David Kirkpatrick, The New York Times, October 26, 2008
“an admiring account of the troop “surge” in Iraq that Mr. McCain was among the first to embrace.”

Colonel Gregory Fontenot, Military Review, November/December issue
“As a rule, hyperbole is permissible for the ‘blurbs’ on the jacket of books and not in reviews, but in the case of Linda Robinson’s Tell Me How This Ends, it’s a hard one to follow. Robinson’s book is among the best written about the war in Iraq….”

Military Times, November 17, 2008
“The author who persuaded press-shy Special Forces soldiers to open up in the fascinating “Masters of Chaos: The Secret History of the Special Forces” (PublicAffairs, 2004) has done it again. This time, she persuaded Petraeus — now head of U.S. Central Command — and others in Iraq to talk, and she listened. And evidently, she took good notes. The result is not as dramatic as “Chaos,” but given the themes — politics and management — the insights in “Tell Me How This Ends” make the book worthwhile contemporary history and, foremost, military biography.”

John Nagl, Army Magazine, December issue
“Likely to remain the best analysis of General Petraeus’ role in the decisive years of the war in Iraq short of the general’s own memoirs.”

Tell Me How This Ends: A First Draft of History
By Joseph J. Collins
Linda Robinson's "Tell Me How This Ends: General Petraeus and the Search for a Way Out of Iraq" is a superb addition to the next wave of Iraq War literature: the Surge Assessments. Hitting the ground before new books by Gordon, Ricks, Woodward, et al., Robinson of the "US News and World Report" tells more than the tale of how a General and his wizards turned around a failed military effort. "Tell Me How This Ends" is a holistic picture of the Surge. It takes the reader from fractious discussions in the White House --- where a beleaguered President pushed aside all of his senior military advisors to go the extra mile for success --- down to the burning fighting vehicles of the troops who bought battlefield progress with their blood. Robinson's battle stories of the 5th Cavalry, 26th Infantry, 23d Infantry, 10th Mountain Division, and the Marines in Anbar will quiet those who think we can't take a punch or fight this kind of war.

At the same time, Robinson knows her counterinsurgency theory. She portrays the struggle for Iraq as essentially a political contest and spends many pages discussing how Ambassador Ryan Crocker and his team prodded the Maliki government to act in the whole nation's interest. Among the more interesting pages are those on the Awakening, the process whereby Sunni tribesmen were turned against the vicious, foreign influences of Al Qaeda. Equally interesting were the chapters on how the central (Shiite-dominated) Iraqi government is dealing with those armed Sunnis, who are, at least for now, nominally on their side. Another highlight --- at least for this old soldier-bureaucrat --- was the inner workings of Team Petraeus and how this remarkable General adapted a standard military bureaucracy to the task of politico-military innovation. The cooperation documented here between the Embassy and the Command was also exemplary.

All of these issues are covered with great insight, fueled by experienced, on-the-ground reporting. There is a minimum of anonymous, third-hand sources in this book. Most of the participants speak clearly here in their own words, or through first hand observations, or by their subsequent actions. If good journalism is the first draft of history, we can be well satisfied with Robinson's contribution. The title passage --- tell me how this ends --- was actually a rhetorical question from then-Major General Petraeus at the start of the Iraq war. In a twist of historical irony, the questioner became responsible for crafting the political-military answer to his own question. Much progress has been made, but as Petraeus himself has recently noted, we are not yet ready for dancing in the end zone. This is the critical set of issues covered holistically by Linda Robinson in this well-reported and highly readable book. She has set the bar high for those who come after her.

This review represents my personal views and does not represent the policy or opinion of any U.S. government entity.

A Plan and a Man
By KLF
In his acclaimed study of counterinsurgency, LEARNING TO EAT SOUP WITH A KNIFE, John Nagl includes this note from Vicount Montgomery of El Alamein, to the Colonial Secretary,
" Dear Lyttelton, Malaya
We must have a plan.
Secondly we must have a man.
When we have a plan and a man, we shall succeed: not otherwise.
Yours Sincerely,
Montgomery (F.M.)"

Linda Robinson, in her brilliantly conceived and executed, TELL ME HOW THIS ENDS: GENERAL DAVID PETRAEUS AND THE SEARCH FOR A WAY OUT OF IRAQ. addresses the Iraq war in terms of both the plan - how it was developed, adapted, and executed - and the man: Petraeus. In so doing, she has written a classic analysis that ranges from U.S. national policy through the levels of strategy and operations down to the tactical and back again. In telling the story of General Petraeus and his plan she also tells the tales of the other actors, American and Iraqi, Ambassadors and Generals, Lt. Colonels, Captains, Sergeants, soldiers and Marines. And she shows how the smoke and sounds of battle (and the silences) flow from policies, plans, and military doctrine.

Robinson's story focuses on David Petraeus and takes the reader through a series of key mentorships and experiences. The most important mentor was General John R. Galvin who encouraged Petraeus to seek his doctorate and brought him into contact with counteinsurgency in 1986 when Galvin was the commander of the U.S. Southern Command in Panama. Robinson notes, in this context, that Petraeus co-authored Galvin's important article, "Uncomfortable Wars" dealing with counterinsurgency in Latin America published in the Army War College journal, PARAMETERS, and later in Max Manwaring's edited volume by the same title. From this background and later experiences in Iraq, Petraeus led the effort to redefine Army and Marine Corps counteinsurgency doctrine while commanding the Army's Combined Arms Center.

For this, Petraeus assembled a team under the leadership of his West Point classmate, Con Crane, and including LTC John Nagl. Robinson points out the debt the authors acknowledge to Manwaring's work on small wars issues. From the doctrine that his efforts produced, the newly promoted four star General Petraeus developed the strategy that came to be known as "the surge" (of which the troop surge was only a small, if important, part).

Robinson uses this story to show how an effective military commander works to achieve unity of effort up to the political level, laterally with the American ambassador in Iraq, and down to the troops under his command. In the process, she demosntrates the difficulties inherent in coalition counterinsurgent warfare.

The weakest section of the book is her last chapter (which is not very weak at all) where she suggests approaches for the future in Iraq. The only problem is that much of the future is now and some of her suggestions have been overtaken by events.

That said, the only appropriate words for the book are superlatives!

A well-written informative history
By Fierce & Fond Reader
An overview of American and Iraqi political, military, social and religious histories plus a bio of General Petraeus told in episodic
pivotal moments of choices, impacts and combat. Like the situation, a complicated read. I learnt a ton more than anything aired on tv channel news.

Excellent for an OBIEE Developer/Admin/Professional
By K. McGinley
Nowhere will you find a more comprehensive look at Oracle Exalytics from start to finish than in this book. Starting with the approach to the engineered system, the book winds through the hardware components, the software components, the features unique to Oracle Exalytics, and eventually leads into the outline of a process a reader could follow if he were testing his own OBIEE system on an Oracle Exalytics box. It should come as no surprise, then, that one of the core audiences for this book is someone who is pretty familiar with OBIEE and most likely serves as the administrator of an existing OBIEE deployment.

Another audience for the book is the OBIEE professional who understands parts of Oracle Exalytics, but doesn't quite have the full picture. This book does a good job venturing into areas that aren't typically covered in great detail elsewhere by Oracle, such as the Integrated Lights Out Management (ILOM). There are quite a number of pages devoted to ILOM, which I have not seen covered elsewhere, and that adds to the value-for-money quotient when considering whether to purchase this book or not.

If you're someone who needs to make a value-based decision on whether to purchase Oracle Exalytics or not, this book is not for you. The author never attempts to address the question of "should you or shouldn't you," nor does he try to address the "so what?" This book is really good at dissecting Oracle Exalytics and examining the parts, but never offers why any of those parts are inherently good (or bad). This is to be expected, to a degree, given that this book is really a small portion of the much larger developer's guide by the same author.

The second area that I found the book doesn't really attempt to tackle are some of the nuances of the parts and pieces of Exalytics. As mentioned before, it does an excellent job of dissecting everything, but it doesn't really prod and poke. For example, there are quite a number of explanations of various options within the Summary Advisor, and recommendations on values and settings are made, but no exploration of different settings are discussed. These are definitely harder topics to discuss, and perhaps not realistic for the scope of a book like this. But if you're the type of reader that likes to step off the beaten path and explore these things, the book won't take you there.

Most people will find that "Oracle Exalytics Revealed" gives them a much better technical understanding of Oracle Exalytics than before they read it. The book is extremely thorough and easy to follow. It was also written in the context of testing your own OBIEE environment on Oracle Exalytics, and I find this narrative incredibly useful to explore the product. As long as you buy the book with the proper expectations of its contents, I believe you will be extremely satisfied with the results.

Exalytics + OBIEE + Times Ten
By Amazon Customer
Just bought the kindle version of the book.
Coming from Hyperion world, i was expecting there is a sample of times-ten combined with essbase on OBIEE deployment.
However, the book only covers the technical of exalytics (pretty deep on the setting/configuration of the machine) and OBIEE + the Times Ten samples.
Some suggestion to consider, adding the steps of exalytics machine virtualization.
Anyway, thanks a lot to Mark for writing the first book of exalytics.
