Economic Origins of Roman Christianity, by Robert B. Ekelund Jr., Robert D. Tollison

In the global marketplace of ideas, few realms spark as much conflict as religion. For millions of people, it is an integral part of everyday life, reflected by a widely divergent supply of practices and philosophical perspectives. Yet, historically, the marketplace has not always been competitive. While the early Common Era saw competition between Christianity, Judaism, and the many pagan cults, Roman Christianity came eventually to dominate Western Europe.

Using basic concepts of economic theory, Robert B. Ekelund Jr. and Robert D. Tollison explain the origin and subsequent spread of Roman Christianity, showing first how the standard concepts of risk, cost, and benefit can account for the demand for religion. Then, drawing on the economics of networking, entrepreneurship, and industrial organization, the book explains Christianity's rapid ascent. Like a business, the church developed sound business strategies that increased its market share to a near monopoly in the medieval period. This book offers a fascinating look at the dynamics of Christianity’s rise, as well as how aspects the church’s structure—developed over the first millennium—illuminate a number of critical problems faced by the church today.

Review
“An engrossing and insightful account of the branding of early Christianity through entrepreneurship, networking, manipulation of civil governments, and the control of entry into the Roman religion market. This is a major contribution to the study of religion, giving us a fresh, analytical approach to early Christianity and how it became the powerful medieval church.” (Rachel M. McCleary, John F. Kennedy School of Government, Harvard University)

“Economic Origins of Roman Christianity takes readers on a sweeping tour of a millennium, introducing us to Saint Paul as entrepreneur, the Nicaean Council as product strategy, and Charlemagne and Pope Leo III as masters of vertical integration. Using economic models, the authors narrate a history of religion that adds a new dimension to our typical view of the political, military, and theological origins of Christianity. There is much here for economists to ponder and enough storytelling to keep history buffs going.”

(Larry Witham, author of Marketplace of the Gods: How Economics Explains Religion)

“By applying fundamental economic principles, Ekelund and Tollison shed light on the often mysterious ecclesiastical practices of the Roman Catholic Church as well as its weakening grip as an institutional monopoly in the marketplace of religions. Economic Origins of Roman Christianity will have wide ramifications for economists, sociologists, and political scientists concerned with economic development, the roots of religious plurality, and institutional change.”

(Murat Iyigun, University of Colorado)

Credible account of Christianity's evolution
By Ratso Rizzo
This book is written for economists and focuses on the evolution of Christianity from its beginnings up to the monopoly it reached in the middle ages. It shows how the church was monopolized by civil governments and provides a fascinating (but quick, too quick sometimes) account of the interplay between civil governments and Rome that led to dominance over Western Europe for 5 or 6 centuries. Though written for economists it is highly accessible to the "intelligent layperson."

Blood Ties Book Four: All Souls' Night (A Bloodties Novel), by Jennifer Armintrout

I have reached my breaking point. And now I will not, cannot be stopped. With the Soul Eater on the verge of god status, it's time for me to take a final stand, even if it means losing everything I love. Even if it means losing my life.

I've got plenty of power on my side, and some I didn't know I could count on in the first place. But it's nothing compared to the army of the undead the Soul Eater is building up. And time is running out.

They say that good always triumphs over evil. I hope that's true. Because the odds aren't in our favor, and the fate of the world is in our hands.

Review
"Armintrout's bold debut...bares its fangs early, unafraid to spill blood and vital organs from its very first pages. This fast, furious novel is a squirm-inducing treat." - Publishers Weekly"

About the Author
Jennifer Armintrout has been obsessed with vampires ever since the age of four. Raised in an enormous Roman Catholic family, Jennifer attributes her interest in the macabre to viewing too many funerals at a formative age.

This day, when I bolted upright in the bed, throat tensed, vocal cords poised to emit a scream as soon as the gasping breath I'd drawn forced its way out, a hand clamped over my mouth. Nathan was already awake.

Don't make a sound, he warned through the blood tie, his body rigid with tension that jumped through our mental connection, filling me with his anxiety.

Something was seriously wrong. In the past few weeks, since we had fled Grand Rapids and come to Max's Chicago penthouse, Nathan's entire focus had been my recovery. I'd gone mute and practically catatonic after Cyrus, once my sire, then my fledgling, had died. After I'd wake from one of my many nightmares—daymares, I supposed, since we vampires are third-shifters on account of that pesky sun thing—Nathan would hold me and try to reassure me that it had all been a dream, that he wouldn't let anything harm me. Now, though, I felt his irritation and acute distraction through the blood tie, the telepathic and empathic connection that coursed between a fledgling vampire and their sire, and I knew something wasn't right.

Before he could explain, I heard a thud and some violent cursing upstairs.

There's someone in the apartment, I practically screamed into his head, and the pressure of his hand on my jaw subsided slightly.

I know. That's why I said not to make a sound. I'm going to check it out. He let go of my face and threw back the blankets. I could tell from the faint light outlining the heavy curtains that it was still the middle of the day, but Max's apartment was specially designed to be dark as a tomb and just as protected from unwanted sunlight.

Be careful, I warned. As if someone could be careful apprehending an intruder in their home. At least Nathan would be armed.

Crap. He wasn't armed. "Nathan!" I whispered after him, so the cause of the disturbance wouldn't hear me. Unfortunately, neither did Nathan. He was probably halfway up the stairs by now. Rolling my eyes, I got out of bed and pulled on the jeans I'd discarded the night before, realizing how ridiculous a silk camisole nightgown looked with jeans. Good thing this wasn't a fashion show. I grabbed a stake from the drawer in the bedside table. Forget something? I shot across the blood tie, letting him feel all my aggravation at having been pulled out of a comfortable bed. I hoped it would cover the fear that pounded through my veins.

Besides pants? he quipped. He was scared, joking with me to disguise it.

We'd been sleeping in the room I'd used when I'd stayed with Max, after the spell we did to free Nathan from his sire's possession went all sorts of haywire. No, that wasn't true. The spell had worked perfectly. It was our relationship that had gone all kinds of haywire. I'd left with Max to try and sort through the disaster of my personal life, but—as seemed to be the case ever since I'd become a vampire—the preternatural world didn't slow down for boyfriend-girlfriend drama. Nathan's sire, the Soul Eater, was still out there, trying to become a god and turn the world into his own personal feeding trough.

Though I'd spent a lot of time in the penthouse, I still wasn't familiar enough with the halls to navigate in the dark. The place was huge and, as huge places often were, decorated with lots of expensive and sharp-edged little tables bearing fragile objects that held the potential for lots of noise if they came crashing down. The guest rooms were on the first floor. Who or whatever had broken in would have had to access the place through the main entrance on the second floor, or the roof door on the third. I felt along the wall, recoiling whenever I encountered the shape of a painting or a light switch. My toes painfully found the bottom step of the stairs to the next floor, and I wondered why I hadn't heard Nathan tripping and falling over himself on his way. I gripped the rail and went slowly up the stairs, quelling the urge to race up, making heavy clomping sounds on each step. There was no light at the top. I'd just keep on going until there weren't any more stairs, I supposed.

Or, until I ran into something. Nathan turned abruptly as I collided with him. He grabbed my arms as if to flip me onto my back, but stopped before I even needed to tell him it was me. Don't do that, he admonished through the blood tie.

"Sorry," I whispered, craning to see past him in the dark. We were at the top of the stairs. The marble floor of the foyer gleamed in the faint glow from the recessed wall lights set at shin level around the perimeter of the room. When Max's sire, Marcus, had designed this place, he'd obviously done it with daytime stumbling in mind. Too bad he hadn't employed that feature in the rest of the house. In the darkness, a shadow moved, fast, from the bottom of the stairs to the third floor to the kitchen door.

Well, there's at least one, Nathan told me grimly. You stay here.

I pressed the stake into his hand and watched him go, wondering how long I'd have to wait before following him. He knew me well enough that he'd expect me to disobey his command, but if I waited long enough he'd be too busy with the intruder to stop me.

The kitchen door opened and light spilled out. No burglar I'd ever heard of turned on lights. Well, at least, they didn't in the movies. But burglars didn't break in during the day, either. Unless this burglar knew who and what he was dealing with.

How did they find us so quickly? my mind screamed as I watched Nathan disappear behind the door. It swung shut and I was left to adapt to the darkness again. It isn't fair. We haven't had any time.

And just like that, fair blew right out the window. There was a shout, not Nathan's, and the clatter of metal-on-metal that seemed to go on and on. A grunt, a thud, something hit the wall. I charged up the stairs, my heart very like this many times before fogging my brain.

I pushed through the door. Nathan's stake lay on the pristine white tile. The rack of pots over the kitchen island was half-empty, most of its stock scattered on the floor. The island itself was completely bare, like a body had been thrown or dragged across it. Nathan's body, from the looks of things on the floor. His assailant had him pinned, no small feat for a human fighting a vampire, and he was definitely human. I could smell his blood, and his fear. The man lay across Nathan's chest, the muscles of his back straining against his black T-shirt. Judging by the V of sweat growing there, he would tire soon. And judging by the shape of the gun tucked in the waistband of his jeans, he'd come here betting on a fight.

I knew why Nathan was losing. He didn't want to hurt a human, even if they were out to hurt us. I, on the other hand, didn't care all that much when the human in question could be one of the Soul Eater's day staff. I grabbed one of the pans off the floor, a heavy, copper-bottomed saucepan. I'd just raised it up when Nathan's gaze met mine and knew my intention. He gripped the intruder's wrists and forced them down, then pushed him off. His strength was enough to send the man flying across the room, safely out of my range. He didn't want me to kill a human, either.

Nathan was on his feet in an instant, charging as I screamed, "Nathan, don't! He's got a gun!"

The shot rang out before I'd noticed the man had climbed to his feet. Nathan crumpled to the floor, and there was a second of horrible silence before he rolled onto his back, groaning and whimpering. The intruder stood, face drawn in shock. I leaped after him, easily clearing the corner of the island between us, and knocked him to the floor. His fingers tightened around the gun. I had to slam his closed fist into the floor over and over, until the tile cracked under his knuckles and he howled in pain, releasing the weapon. I hated to give him credit, but the guy was tough.

I grabbed the gun, hoping my shaking hands and the way I held it didn't mark me as a total novice. A novice can still pull a trigger, I thought, and, through his haze of pain, Nathan admonished, Squeeze, Carrie, not pull. You squeeze a trigger.

I rolled my eyes and pressed the point of the gun into the stranger's forehead. Imagining a bullet lodging and blossoming in fatty brain tissue, I pulled it back, just in case my trigger finger squeezed when I didn't mean to.

"Don't move," I barked when he cradled his bleeding hand to his chest.

"Shouldn't you check on your friend there?" His voice had an appealing, everyman tone to it. Like the professor I had who'd been from upstate New York and could make a pharmaceutical lecture sound like a retelling of a softball game victory. It was a dangerous quality in an armed assailant, because it put me slightly at ease.

I'll be fine, Nathan sent on a wave of agony. It was a little hard to believe when he was writhing on the floor and making strangled cries as though he'd just hit a ten on the pain scale. I turned back to my captive. "He'll be fine. Who sent you?"

"Well, no one. I'm here once a month." He nodded to the refrigerator. On the floor beside it was a small cooler, white with a red top that swings back, the kind that you'd pack a transplant organ in. "I'm Max's blood supplier."

I lowered the gun a little. "Right. And you just waltz in here all the time."

"Well, once a month," he corrected with a shrug.

I was about eighty percent sure he was lying. "Sorry. I think that Max would have mentioned you to me. Or, at least, that I would have seen you before."

"No, I'm quiet. And I've got keys. How the hell else do you think I got in here? There's a doorman and great security." He ran his uninjured hand through his sandy-colored hair, his gaze flicking to Nathan, still on the floor.

"Listen, I knew your friend there was a vampire, or I never would have shot him."

"Right." Trembling, I moved to tuck the gun into the back of my jeans.

"I wouldn't do that. Not with it ready to fire and the safety off." He held out his hand for it. I turned, fired a hole into the side of the plastic wastebasket, then looked for the safety switch and pushed it before sliding the gun into my waistband. I felt oddly empowered with a gun in my hands, and...

A full 5 stars! Out of the darkness of all Souls' Night, comes light.
By melindeeloo
All Soul's Night is the satisfying conclusion to a series that has reinvented itself with every book. Vampires Carrie and Nathan are taking a breather before the final battle to stop the cunning Soul-Eater whose powers grow with each vampire soul he 'drinks, a battle that they are ill equiped to fight. After withholding his love for three books, Nathan is finally ready to love Carrie, but Carrie is now the one holding herself apart. Frustrated Nathan runs out of patience, calling Carrie on her pettiness and selfishness, forcing a little introspection on Carrie who at long last sees the cost others have paid for her selfinterest. Unfortunately this revelation comes a bit late and Carrie may loose Nathan for good when he willingly walks into a trap baited with his foster son Ziggy - the son who died in Nathan's arms but who is somehow `alive' but tied to Soul-Eater through the fledgling/sire blood tie. Believing his sire's lies, Ziggy delivers Nathan into torture and certain death -- Nathan is intended to be the sacrifice that will fuel the Soul-Eater's transformation into a dark god. Given Armintrout's willingness to sacrifice her characters in previous stories, I was definitely on the edge of my seat for a good portion of the book wondering if Nathan was going to survive the torture that make Armintrout's books fall on the `Horror' side of urban fantasy/ paranormal romance.

Most of the players in the story are ones that we've already met in the series. The magical Dalia who continues to revel in her depravity plays her evil part with glee but pregnant werewolf Bella is mostly on the sidelines. And even though the main thrust of preparing for the battle against the Soul-Eater lies with Carrie, dual natured vampire/werewolf hybrid Max who has his own struggles, Ziggy with his divided loyalties, and newcomer to the series Bill an ex-Marine blood supplier -- the only human amid all the vamps but whose acceptance may help to win Ziggy back his soul -- also play important roles. I could rave on about the character development and the great plot. I was impressed by the way that Armintrout builds the characters up for the final confrontation and actually gives them the skills to have a hope of winning.

I really enjoyed the final journey to Armintrout's Blood Ties world where sacrifices are always required, death is not always permanent and endings are not predictable - who'd have thought that a series so dark could end with a promise of light.

All soul's pitch black night
By Alison J. R. Cihak
I loved this book as much as I loved the preceding ones. In this book it's not only good against evil, it's also the good guys wondering how evil they are capable to become to defeat the Soul Eater.

Ziggy's coming back, totally changed by his sire's wickedness, now an adult person, darker than ever, and making you wondering at every single page who's side is he going to be, and yet knowing it from the beginning was awesome.
Carrie, becoming more powerful, dangerous and decided than she's ever been, being capable of things no one could expect from her, for one single reason: Nathan.
Nathan, scared not only about his sure fate but about Carrie's, suffering for her more than he ever did when Marianne was dying, not knowing if he'll be able to survive to her sure death. As touchy as always.
And of course, our beloved Max, who's internal fight between his two natures while fighting his way back home has a place in this dark disclosure for the series.

As always Armintrout had rhythm, a wicked imagination that makes you wanna stand and scream in some passages and her particular skill to make you become paranoid, not knowing for sure what's going to happen until it's done.
If you enjoyed the 3 preceding books, you'll feel the same about this one. And yet the end didn't convince me- but I think there was really no proper final for all the darkness and pain they have faced.

Really an extraordinary novel by Jennifer Armintrout.

The ending makes me wish I hadn't bothered.
By M from California
I just finished reading all 4 books in the series & wasn't planning on writing a review, but after reading the end of this book, I felt I had to.

**SPOILERS**

First, I have to say right up front that I am not a big fan of Carrie, She can't make up her mind, she's always whining how things are her fault while she continues to never stop & think, & after 4 books, you would think she could remember that someone else can hear her through the blood tie. Nathan can use a few anti whining lessons too. I love Ziggy & Bill together, & I have to admit that this is the first gay sex scenes that I have every run across in any of my books & they are hot!

You may be wondering why I gave this book only two stars, the reason is simple, it's the really crappy ending. First, what about Ziggy & Bill? The closest we get to finding out what happens with them is that Nathan says they were the ones who brought him back & it took them a year to do it. No mention of where they are, what they've been doing, what they plan on doing with their eternity, & especially, how do they feel about how Nathan & Carrie ended up? (I'm getting to that). Second, what happened to Cyrus? This man has been killed & brought back repeatedly in the series, but the last we hear of him is at the mansion right before Carrie kills the Soul Eater. Is he still alive? If he is, what is he doing? Has he reverted back to the way he was when he turned Carrie? How can he be such a major character throughout the series & at the end, we don't know what finally happens to him?

Third & finally, Nathan & Carrie get brought back from the dead & they are human. They're human, & Carrie wants to stay that way so she can get a house with a white picket fence & have babies. Then, maybe in twenty years or so, they'll let Ziggy turn them both & they can be vampires again. What a stupid ending. At the end they were starting to build a little vampire family with Nathan, Carrie, Ziggy & Bill, & Armintrout rips it apart by changing the two primary characters back to human. Are they all going to live together? What about after all the babies arrive? "Sorry, Nathan Jr. but uncle Ziggy can only play catch with you after dark" "Susie, I told you leave uncle Bill's fangs alone!" I guess she figured the only way to give them a HEA was to make them human, but being vampires was the most interesting thing about them. Now they're just another couple in a romance novel, after 4 books I was hoping for more.

I'm glad that the series wasn't longer, if I had read 10 books about these people & ended up with this rushed & incomplete ending, I would have been really angry about it. As it is, I feel like I probably wasted my time.

Tacitus, by Ronald Mellor

The histories of Roman senator Cornelius Tacitus constitute the most influential examination of tyranny, political behavior and public morality from the classical age. For centuries these portraits of courageous martyrs to freedom, of paranoid tyrants, and of sycophantic flatteres and informers shaped modern political attitudes. Ronald Mellor provides a compelling analysis of the ideas of the greatest historian of evil in the western intellectual tradition.

In Tacitus, Ronald Mellor passionately argues for reclaiming this ironic genius whose cynical world view is particularly well-suited to an analysis of the tyranny and brutality in our own century.

Tacitus is presented as a moralist, psychologist, political analyst and literary artist. Tacitus' greatest impact has never been on historians. Rather, his political vision and dramatic images left their mark on painters, poets and thinkers.

-Gilbert Taylor, "ABA Booklist, November 1992
"[Mellor] has set out to write a book about Tacitus for the non-specialist reader to convey why Tacitus's histories exercised a powerful fascination over centuries of dramatists, philosophers and even politicians'."

A People's Guide to the Federal Budget, by Mattea Kramer, National Priorities Project

A comprehensive resource on what every American should know about how our government raises and spends our tax dollars

From history of the budget process to detail about the ongoing conflict in Washington, from charts explaining where every federal dollar goes to simple explanations of budget terminology, this book covers it all.

A People’s Guide to the Federal Budget is for every American who wants to understand and participate in a process that affects all of us. It serves as a foundation for the novice reader, a reference tool for a more advanced audience, and is perfect for high school and college classroom use. Released to coincide with the fiscal year 2013 budget process and the 2012 presidential election, this guide includes up-to-the-minute numbers and explanation of President Obama's 2013 budget request.

Ideally, the federal budget is a reflection of our values and our vision for the role of our government. The $3.7 trillion the government is planning to spend this year is mostly our money. We contribute about 60 percent of the government’s total revenues each year (not including borrowing) through individual income taxes and payroll deductions for such things as Social Security and Medicare. This means we are all stakeholders in the government’s decisions about how this money will be spent.

Understanding the federal budget is essential. Our elected representatives in Washington make choices that impact not just us, but our children, and our children’s children. We need to be in this debate, and be in it for the long haul, if we are to build the kind of government, and the kind of nation, that truly reflects our values.

From School Library Journal
At the risk of inundating readers with sheer numbers, pie charts, and assorted graphics, A People's Guide takes a singularly dry topic and admirably makes it accessible to the masses. A solid review of "Where Does the Money Come From?" and "Where Does the Money Go?" lays the groundwork for an analysis of the Federal Debt and Obama's 2013 Budget Request. The specific aim for this text is to help readers understand Obama's 2013 proposed budget, a call to action if you will, with an aim to nonpartisan presentation. The text is carefully laid out in a highly digestible and sequential format. It includes simple, layperson's concepts such as our Social Security wage tax holiday, down to 4.2 percent until the end of 2012, upon which the elucidation of more complex tax topics can be built. A more complex graphic is a bar graph with a 70-year review of "Revenues, Outlays, Deficits and Surpluses" - and current deficits versus outlays aren't looking good! In the "Take Action" chapter, a proactive chart provides a month-by-month layout of "Opportunities to Take Action" leading up to October 1, the new fiscal year. Readers would be well served by having a solid grasp of basic government fiscal machinations prior to reading this guide. With clearly presented concepts, consistently referring back to prior explanatory text, there is a wealth of data packed into every page. Review
"This year the president, the entire House of Representatives, and one-third of the Senate are up for re-election.... The officials we elect in November will have the opportunity to reshape our country for years to come. If we're to have any hope of navigating the federal budget process and understanding the complex decisions our elected officials will make in future years, we need this book. A People's Guide to the Federal Budget is our way in."

-from the foreword by Barbara Ehrenreich, best-selling author of Nickel and Dimed

"Many Americans express dissatisfaction or worse over what's happening in Washington today... they can't understand much of what's going on, especially when it comes to where our tax dollars go. This book is a bridge for Americans from dissatisfaction and confusion to knowledge and action.... Congresswoman Barbara Jordan said: 'If you're going to play the game properly you'd better know every rule.' That's what makes A People's Guide essential. We've got to understand what's going on in Washington so that we can work together and change the rules, so that our elections are not auctions.... All Americans who hope to make their voices heard in Washington must understand that we must take on the issue of money in politics, and play to win."

-from the afterword by Josh Silver, CEO of United Republic

"Nothing will change in Washington unless the American people demand it. A People's Guide to the Federal Budget empowers Americans by explaining the inside-Washington game and offering tools to hold lawmakers accountable."

-Robert Reich, Secretary of Labor in the Clinton Administration and best-selling author of Aftershock and The Work of Nations

“Given the fateful budget choices we now face as a country, A People's Guide to the Federal Budget crucially helps all citizens understand the process by which those choices will be made and how we can all engage to ensure the best possible outcome.”

-Anthony W. Marx, President, New York Public Library

"Young adults are underrepresented at the polls. That would begin to change if high school curricula provided a strong grounding in the federal budget-- so that young people have the tools to base their judgments on evidence. A People's Guide to the Federal Budget is an invaluable resource."

- Dr. Anand Marri, Teachers College, Columbia University

"Kramer (senior research analyst, National Priorities Project) here provides an understandable explanation of federal spending and revenues. The text explains why readers should care about the federal budget and how it affects them…. This book is worthwhile reading for all U.S. citizens."

-Library Journal

“This guide seeks to inform general readers and high school and college students about the federal budget to make them more active citizens. It explains the budget's terminology and language, its history, its decision makers, where the money comes from and how it is allocated, the federal debt, and how to take action.”

-Book News

“This primer on the complicated federal budget process is offered in readily understandable language for all readers…. The book clearly addresses such issues as discretionary spending … and the federal debt. In the foreword, Ehrenreich reflects on the challenges people face in trying to make ends meet.... This is a valuable resource.”

MUST READ!
By The Stray
If anyone had started talking with me about the federal budget before I read this book, I probably would have rolled my eyes and groaned before quickly changing the subject.

Luckily for me and anyone else who has had a similar reaction, A People's Guide to the Federal Budget is a breath of fresh air in today's cloudy political climate. No matter which side of the political fence you are on, reading this book will be illuminating. No partisan rhetoric, no arguing about who's right or wrong - just the hard facts.

I highly recommend this book for anyone who wants to understand what political candidates are ACTUALLY saying when they talk about taxes, spending cuts, and deficits during the election season.

Despite the huge amount of budget information presented in the book, I could make sense of all the revenue and spending charts. The other graphics and political cartoons were helpful in making the content seem less daunting - and even funny!

I closed the book feeling like I had the information I need to make my own decisions about what politicians are saying - and why I should care. If YOU care about our democracy and what the federal government does with your money, you should read this book, too.

Librarian -- 4 stars!
By Lori
I wanted to review this book from a very personal vantage point: I've been a public librarian for nearly two decades.

"A People's Guide to the Federal Budget" is a very useful new resource from National Priorities Project that has relevance and appeal to a wide audience. This book will save hours of research for anyone looking to understand how the federal government raises and spends money, and how our legislators make those decisions. With a glossary of terms, a summary of key points at the end of each chapter, clear diagrams and charts, and a comprehensive bibliography, this book is a cleanly-presented and well-researched reference about the federal budget.

To my knowledge, there is no other book like "A People's Guide to the Federal Budget" that has the goal of "helping folks like you across the country...understand the steps of the federal budget process and identify the impact of federal spending and tax policies on your own family and community." The National Priorities Project team clearly had the average American in mind when they wrote this book, shown by the lack of jargon and the inclusion of graphics and cartoons to illustrate complex concepts.

I was especially interested in the Appendix for Educators, which provides sample discussion questions and activities for high school classrooms. Some of the materials are great for adults, too - I plan to use them as a starting point for book group discussions at my library.

The one downside of the book is that it grounds part of its analysis in President Obama's 2013 Budget proposal. While this is great for readers between now and the election, it makes that portion of the book quickly outdated. Certainly, the concepts will apply to future budget proposals and the numbers will remain relevant even once the 2013 budget is passed; however, people picking up this book more than six months from now should know that the numbers are not current.

Overall, "A People's Guide to the Federal Budget" is a tremendous resource for anyone curious to learn more about the inner workings of the federal budget and how it affects our everyday lives.

When Will We Be Given The Truth?
By George Fulmore
The full title of this book is "A People's Guide to The Federal Budget." This title would lead one to believe that the book's content would include a straight-forward explanation of our federal budget, plus a clear explanation of how we get significant deficits each year and have continually increased our total federal debt over the past 10 years. But this is exactly what this book does not do.

First off, the book perpetuates the lies of the George W. Bush administration about the deficits in the 2002 through 2008 fiscal year period, when Social Security surpluses were "borrowed" to pay down the deficit, and, most inexcusably, when the costs of the two wars were NOT included in the reported annual deficits.

What a farce. Why does this lie need to continue? And why does the Office of Budget and Management and the White House not correct these figures, historically? That is part of the problem. In the book, for example, Figure 7.1 is a graph that shows the purported annual deficits in the years 1940 through 2010. It says the source of the data is the IRS. But for the fiscal years of 2002 through 2008 the graph lies. It shows the "reported" deficits from the Bush administration, not the true ones.

In fact, the annual deficits during the fiscal years 2002 through 2008 averaged more than $600 billion per year, not as little as $160 billion per year, as is shown on the graph. And - as an item almost never reported -- the 2007/2008 fiscal year under the George W. Bush administration was the first fiscal year in our country's history with more than a $1 trillion deficit in just one year. That is how the Bush administration gave us an increase in nearly $5 trillion in just eight years. That is what this book should have told us! (For proof of all this, go to [...] There, enter the date 10/01/07 as the starting date and 10/01/08 as the ending date. Subtract the starting value from the ending value for the true annual deficit for the 2007/2008 fiscal year. You should get the value $1.062 trillion.)

A second major point that needs to be known is that the entitlements of Social Security and Medicare have revenue offsets; thus, it is ridiculous to say or imply, as this book does, that the entitlements are the main costs of the federal government. This is untrue and ridiculous. In fact, the NET cost of Social Security, annually, to the federal government is essentially nil: The annual cost is offset by the revenue from the payroll tax, plus the interest due on the Social Security Trust Fund of nearly $2.7 trillion. For Medicare, the NET cost is in the $350 billion range, annually. This is NOT a significant amount in a federal spending budget of $3.73 trillion!

This misinformation is represented in the pie chart, figure 8.2, in the book. It shows Social Security, Unemployment Insurance and Labor expenses to consume 34% of the total federal budget. That is simply not true when you figure in the offset revenue from the payroll tax. Figure 8.2 also shows inflated costs of Medicare and Health services at 24%. Again, Medicare has revenue offsets, both from the payroll tax and from premium payments by Medicare enrollees. Figure 8.2 perpetuates the common lies of what causes our federal deficits.

No, in fact, a correct pie chart of federal spending would NOT include Social Security nor much of Medicare. It would show a federal spending budget of approximately $2.73 trillion, not $3.73 trillion. And it would show that of this spending budget, approximately $1.3 trillion, or about 50% of the total budget --after the offsets for the entitlements -- is spent on the military-security industrial complex. THAT is how we get our annual federal deficit of approximately $1.3 trillion, not because of the entitlements. THAT is what this book should have told us.

You see, the $1.3 trillion spent on the military-security industrial complex each year has no revenue offsets. Zilch. This $1.3 trillion has to be paid for by federal income taxes...except that we do not collect enough in federal income taxes to PAY for this expense. THAT is why we need to BORROW $1.3 trillion every year. THAT is why we have an annual deficit and increasing federal debt. (For a trustworthy explanation of this concept, see [...]

And, for sure, President Obama shares some of the blame. Under his watch, our total federal deficit has soared nearly $6 trillion higher in a bit more than four years. As ugly as this is, this truth needs to be told. But as I have been explaining, it will NOT be found in this book.

The book does some good things, like tell you about the annual budget process: Who does what and when between Congress and the president. It also includes some basics that some might be missing: definitions of words and concepts about the federal budget.
But when it gets to encouraging readers to contact their legislators and such on the subject of the annual deficit or total debt, I have to protest. The book has not really given us the true scoop on how annual deficits get created. It has essentially perpetuated the lies that keep most Americans in the dark on the subject in the first place. For this reason, I cannot recommend the purchase of the book.

Framed, by Tonino Benacquista

Praise for Holy Smoke, the first in the Antoine series:

“A terrific black comedy …both a blasphemously funny satire of provincial Italian chicanery and a wry acknowledgment of the ambivalence that ambitious immigrants feel about their roots.”—The New York Times

“Unexpected deadly demands made in the name of friendship inspire the plot of this quirky mystery novel. Irreverently inveighs against romantic love, cancer and the Paris suburbs.”—The Washington Post

“An iconoclastic chronicle of small-time crooks and desperate capers, with added Gallic and Italian flair. Wonderful fun.”—Guardian

Antoine, a fanatic billiards player, is asked to watch over a Paris art gallery. When he scuffles with a thief a statue falls and severs his right hand. His maverick investigation leads to the discovery of a series of gruesome killings. Soon Antoine finds himself the prime suspect in the murder of a gallery owner. A game of billiards decides the outcome of this satirical tale which brilliantly captures the world of modern art and the parasites that infest it.

After being, in turn, a museum night-watchman, and a train guard on the Paris-Rome line, Tonino Benacquista is now a highly successful author of fiction and film scripts.

From Publishers Weekly
French author Benacquista (Holy Smoke) delivers another darkly comic crime novel. His eccentric narrator, Antoine, supports his love of playing billiards with a day job hanging paintings at a Paris art gallery. When Antoine interrupts an intruder in the midst of vandalizing an abstract work by an obscure painter, Etienne Morand, the man topples a heavy sculpture on Antoine, crushing his right hand. The loss of his hand further warps Antoine's already idiosyncratic personality and leads him on a quest for his assailant that involves several corpses and suspicions that there may not have been a real artist named Morand. The author's familiarity with the European art world lends plausibility to the fraud plot, while the unusual main character makes a refreshing change from the stock hero of so much genre fiction. New French Noir
By Glenn Harper
Framed, the third novel in translation from French crime and film writer Tonino Benacquista, fulfills the promise of his first novel, Holy Smoke, much more than the second novel, Someone Else. But Framed is very different from Holy Smoke (and from the Highsmith-y Someone Else). If you want the further adventures of the comic hero of Holy Smoke, in English, you'll have to go to a film from a couple of years ago, Love Bites. In Framed, Antoine keeps his day job, as an art handler in a contemporary art gallery, and his night passion, for billiards, completely separate--his friends in one world know nothing of the other world. Unlike the choice that a classic noir writer would surely have made, most of the novel focuses on the day world (dark though it indeed is) rather than the billiard hall. The choice is telling: Benacquista lets us know that he knows where his tale would traditionally be told, and indeed comes back to that world for his denoument; but he shifts the focus into a new realm for noir, fully and realistically rendered (if quite cynically portrayed). Framed is a short and fast novel, a fun read, and highly recommended.

You need determination..
By Quentin Feduchin
Complex and abstruse. You need real determination to follow it.

As an Englishman one relies on the translator; assuming she is faithful, it shows Benacquista has a habit of assuming you're following him. He introduces new ideas assumptively, if you don't follow you lose; indeed it's a good idea to be ready for this because he isn't going to backtrack and update you.. You can imagine him saying "keep up man!"

Even the fact that a search is going on, that there is any element of revenge isn't something made obvious right away; one gets those through inference.

Whether any peace is achieved in the denouement, or maybe a little hope, is a matter for the reader. The proof of the pudding is often found in whether one reads another of his books. Better to read 'The Family' beforehand as it's little more 'black comedic', thus easier to enjoy and more likely to encourage one to read more of his..

satirical French Noir
By A Customer
In Paris, Antoine Andrieux's passion is playing billiards; he loves the strategy needed to be victorious in the game and plays every evening at the top parlors. To afford his nightly habit, Antoine hangs paintings especially for special showings at the most exclusive galleries in the city. His patrons consider him an artist of sorts; so does his billiards rivals.

Currently he is working on a retrospective of the abstractionist Etienne Morand, who always used black except for his last known work, Attempt 30, which is golden yellow. The day after the opening, Antoine arrives at the gallery to make subtle corrections to the display only to find someone in attendance vandalizing a painting. Antoine tries to stop the intruder, but his adversary topples a sculpture destroying his hand and ultimately his sense of worth as he can no longer hang painting and emotionally worse play billiards. Vowing to find his enemy and take appropriate revenge, Antoine begins an investigation only to find the refine art world is outside his understanding even as he becomes FRAMED as the prime suspect in a homicide.

On the surface this translation of a French Noir uses typical throwaway gimmicks like phone tips, but those actually serve as satirical devices that enhance this dark amusing crime caper by comparing felonies (including murder) to artistry. Antoine is a terrific protagonist whose obsession with billiards becomes a compassionate fixation to avenge all that he lost by being a loyal employee. Through his works the obscure Morand comes to life leading even deeper into the delightful comedic comparison between art and crime. HOLY SMOKE, Tonino Benacquista artistically paints a humorous winner.

Slightly Disappointed
By Chryse Wymer
Donald Maass's book The Fire in Fiction: Passion, Purpose and Techniques to Make Your Novel Great changed the way I wrote so completely that I pre-ordered this one.

While I do think Maass offers some exercises that are helpful enough to make this book "above average" and reading it is wonderfully inspirational, this book rehashes a great deal of material from his other works. If you've not read The Fire in Fiction, this might be a better place to start because it reads like The Fire in Fiction Lite, in my view. Maass gives entire chapters on The Inner Journey and The Outer Journey...subjects he has covered quite well for me. I understood this in Fire, that every turning point in a story has an inner and outer component.

In Chapter 3 Levels of Story, again, he repeats himself. He tells us that tension comes from conflicting emotions. Well, yes, I read that in Fire in Fiction and employed it. The concept of plot layers? Yep, read that in Breakout Workbook. There's not much new here except that Writer's Digest Books must have changed their editor from a trained monkey to an actual human being. The editing was quite good, and there are a few helpful exercises. However, if I could only buy one book by Donald Maass, I would make it The Breakout Novelist: Craft and Strategies for Career Fiction Writers. It reads like an amalgamation of all his amazing genius from, if not a master writer (still wonder what his pen name is), then at least a master mentor to a great number of writers.

If it takes you a little time to pick up on key concepts, then this is a great start. Otherwise, if you read and picked up on the important bits in Maass's other books, this one isn't really all that necessary.

A lot of Questions, You Come Up With the Answers
By A Customer
I'll start off by saying that this book greatly reminds me of "How to Write a Damn Good Novel" by James N. Frey. While it's not as simplistic, and straightforward, it often espouses the same (useful) advice. "21st Century Fiction" is not, however, something that will tell you how to create literature or the next great American novel. It's telling you what sells, how people think, and how to impact your readers. The book is filled with guidance and questions, lots of 'em to steer you in the right direction. It is a very useful book to have. However, I have to point out that it is similar to Donald Maas' previous book "Writing the Break Out Novel." (Which I own as well.) It's nothing completely new, but this book, that is "21st Century Fiction," is the one I prefer. And I am certain that you, as a beginning writer, or even seasoned writer, will derive great value from it.

High-Impact Tools for Writing 21st Century Fiction

HIGH-IMPACT TOOLS for WRITING 21st CENTURY FICTION

In the opening chapter, Donald Maass introduces his book's basic premise: In the 21st century "high-impact novels utilize what is best about literary and commercial fictions," transcending the dichotomy (pages 2-3). Maass equates "high-impact" with a novel's inclusion on the New York Times bestseller list: the longer it stays on the list, the higher its impact.

The second chapter's title "The Death of Genre" proclaims assimilation of commercial or genre fiction into literary fiction: "A curious phenomenon has arisen in recent years. It's the appearance of genre fiction so well written that it attains a status and recognition usually reserved for literary works" (page 13). As examples, he cites Robert Stone's "Damascus Gate" -- literary and thriller; and Michael Chabon's "The Yiddish Policeman's Union"--literary and murder mystery.

However, the dichotomy flourishes in MFA programs in American universities. "Literary fiction differs from genre fiction fundamentally in the fact that the former is character-driven, the latter plot-driven....Many, perhaps most, teachers of fiction writing do not accept manuscripts in genre." That's a quote from Janet Burroway's Writing Fiction: A Guide to Narrative Craft (8th Edition), the most widely used textbook in fiction-writing courses. (See my review on amazon.) This dichotomy first arose from early twentieth century modernist and mid-century postmodernist literary movements. Recently, the excesses of postmodernism have led to a reaction for which literary theorists have not yet found a label and are calling it post-postmodernist literary works. (See my note at the end of this review for a brief exposition of these movements.)

Maass's subsequent chapters present tools for writing high-impact fiction. Some of these tools are similar to those in his earlier books such as The Fire in Fiction: Passion, Purpose and Techniques. (See my review on amazon.). Can this book be comprehended without reading his earlier books on craft? Yes.

The third chapter, "The Inner Journey," presents excerpts from several novels such as Joshilyn Jackson's "gods in Alabama," published in 2005, and Jamie Ford's "Hotel on the Corner of Bitter and Sweet," published in 2009. Can these excerpts be understood without having read the novels? Yes. Maass skillfully presents synopses of each novel excerpted.

The fourth chapter, "The Outer Journey," focuses on plot, citing excerpts from Jonathan Safran Foer's "Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close," published in 2005, and Abraham Verghese's "Cutting for Stone," published in 2009.

The fifth chapter, "Standout Characters" cites examples from Markus Zasuk's "The Book Thief," published in 2005 and Lorrie Moore's "A Gate at the Stairs," published in 2009. Also Abraham Verghese's "Cutting for Stone," cited in the previous chapter, underscoring high-impact novel's requirement of both plot- and character-driven writing.

The sixth chapter, "The Three Levels of Story," focuses on subplots, citing detailed examples of Pamela Morsi's "Red's Hot Honky-Tonk Bar," published in 2009, and Kate Morton's "The Forgotten Garden," published in 2009. This chapter also discusses strong endings, citing J. K. Rowling's "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows," published in 2007.

The seventh chapter, "Beautiful Writing," cites many examples, including Kathryn Socket's "The Help," published in 2009; Daniel Depp's "Losers Town" (2009); and George R. R. Martin's "A Feast for Crows,"(2005).

In the eighth chapter, "The 21st Century Novelist," Maass writes, "You no doubt have noticed my contempt for the three Rs of inactive literary writing: reaction, reflection, and remembering." He cites an excerpt from Helen Simonson's "Major Pettigrew's Last Stand," replete with three Rs and does have underlying tension. Will this chapter's title become the title of Maass's next book?

Thanks to Maass's persuasive comments and synopses, I have added five novels to my "must read asap" list: Lorrie Moore's "A Gate at the Stairs'; Helen Simpson's "Major Pettigrew's Last Stand"; Jamie Ford's "The Hotel on the Corner of Bitter and Sweet"; Markus Zusak's "The Book Thief"; Tatiana de Rosnay's "Sarah's Key."

Five-star book.

--------------------------

[The following is an appendix to the above review. The origin of literary modernism goes back to at least the early twentieth century. In a 1924 essay, Virginia Woolf wrote: "On or about December 1910 human character changed." She was referring to an art exhibition titled "Manet and the Post-impressionists" that included paintings by Cezanne, van Gogh, Gauguin, as well as younger post-impressionists such as Picasso and Matisse. Inspired by this movement in visual arts, fiction that's planned to be different from traditional forms of the past, came to be created and later called modernist. The term is applied to the experimental and avant-garde writings of the early 20th century. Its techniques include: aesthetic self-consciousness and extreme subjectivity leading to unreliable narrators; stream of consciousness; interior monologue; nonlinear chronology. Modernist novelists writing in English include Joseph Conrad, James Joyce of Ulysses, Virginia Woolf, and William Faulkner.

Literary postmodernism arose after World War II. It's characterized by ironic parody, inter-textuality, the foregrounding of the process of its own creation, and the rejection of "grand narratives." Postmodernist novelists writing in English include: James Joyce of Finnegan's Wake, Vladimir Nabokov of Pale Fire, John Barth, Donald Barthelme, Kurt Vonnegut, Ishmael Reed, Thomas Pynchon, and Don DeLillo.

Some aspects of postmodernism have led to negative reactions such as from James Wood, currently Professor of the Practice of Literary Criticism at Harvard University and a staff writer at The New Yorker magazine, who introduced the term "hysterical realism" as his denigration. Others have suggested post-postmodernism. Why not simply "21st Century Fiction."]

As always, Lori Foster delivers great romantic suspense!
By destiny morna
Fallen Angels by Lori Foster is a collection of related stories- two of which are older, previously published works and one (Uncovered) is new. Each story is interconnected and has similar themes of secrets and mystery.

In Beguiled, Dane Carter has come back to investigate his twin brother's murder. He even pretends to be his twin to Angel Morris, who was involved with his brother and has a child with him. Dane is attracted to Angel, but also must try to protect her from the killer. Complicating their romance is the lie Dane is keeping in pretending to be his twin.
In Wanton, Celia (who is Dane Carter's sister) has sworn off men when her ex fiance was found to be a criminal and only marrying her for her money. Celia is now determined to make up for her past bad judgements by helping others. Private Investigator, Alec,is Celia's boss who has to keep her safe while they investigate and convince her that love is not wrong.
In Uncovered, Harris and Clair are best friends but Clair has always been secretly in love with Harris. Accidentally, Harris finds some nude pictures of Clair along with Clair's unsigned notes professing her crush on him. Harris is immediately intrigued by this unknown woman and hires Clair's private investigation firm (run by Dane and Alec) to find his mystery woman. Surpringly, none of the 3 men recognize Clair's body in the photos and start a search for this woman.
It is nice to have each story in one volune and see how each story is related. Lori Foster always writes exciting, romantic books and these short stories are no exception.

I loved all 3 stories!
By Amazon Customer
Fallen Angels contains re-releases of 2 of Lori Foster's earlier books, plus a brand new novella.
In BEGUILED, Dane Carter is a investigating the death of his twin, Derek. The Carters are keeping Derek's death quiet. Dane, a PI and the black sheep of the family, pretends to be Derek while he tries to discover whether Derek's death was an accident - or murder. At first, he suspects Angel Morris. Not only is she Derek's former lover, he also caused her to lose her job in a very public and humiliating manner. And Angel has secrets of her own. What will they discover when "Derek" tries to be a part of her life again?
WANTON is the story of Dane Carter's sister Celia and PI Alec Sharpe. Celia has left the Carter family business to work for Dane. Alec is Dane's best investigator. When Celia puts herself in danger trying to save a young woman in trouble, Alec tries to pull her off the case. But stubborn, independent Celia is having none of it! Alec has his work cut out for him.
In UNCOVERED, Clair Caldwell has a thing for firefighter Harris Black, but they are just jogging buddies. When Harris accidentally comes across nude photos of a woman - and notes about him with the pictures - he is entranced. And Clair is horrified! To Clair's chagrin, Harris hires a PI to try to locate the woman - Dane Carter's firm, where Clair works. Can she find a way to get Harris to notice her and convince him there's no need to discover the identity of the mystery woman?
I love connecting stories, and in these three sensual romances we get to revisit a whole lot of characters from more than one series. In BEGUILED, I love the way Dane comes back to do whatever he can for his family even though they have pretty much rejected him. And Angel is nowhere near as fragile as she appears! Alec from WANTON is irresistible, and Celia is definitely a match for him. UNCOVERED kept me laughing. It was so much fun to watch Harris bumble along. I kept hoping Clair would find a way to get him to notice her as more than a friend. I thoroughly enjoyed all three stories!

A must read!
By MishaMisha
This fabulous anthology includes two previously released titles and one original story by Lori Foster.
If you haven't had the pleasure of reading two of Ms. Foster's previously released and hard to find titles, here's your chance to grab them up all in one book! In BEGUILED, we get to watch hunky P. I. Dane Carter fall in love with Angel Morris. In WANTON, go along for the ride when spunky Celia Carter and sexy P. I. Alec Sharpe match wits and sparks fly. Dane and Alec are two of Ms. Foster's sexiest and well loved heroes!
The original story in this anthology, UNCOVERED was a blast to read! Sexy firefighter Harris Black loves the fact that he gets along so well with his pal and jogging partner Clair Caldwell. Harris can be himself with her and he always enjoys her company. Little does he know that Clair has had the hots for him all along. When Harris puts out a building fire in town and stumbles upon a box of nude photos of a mysterious woman as well as letters that mention his name, he is intrigued and wants to find her. When Clair realizes that he is trying to find the women in the pictures, can she put a stop to his investigation and make him see the love that has been right in front of him all along? Clair and Harris were a perfect pair. The chemistry between these two sizzled. The humor was a wonderful addition to a steamy romance. You won't want to miss Harris and Clair's story.
I never miss a chance to get my hands on a new story by Lori Foster. FALLEN ANGELS is a book that you will want to add to your keeper shelf.
