The Empire Strikes Out: How Baseball Sold U.S. Foreign Policy and Promoted the American Way Abroad, by Robert Elias

Is the face of American baseball throughout the world that of goodwill ambassador or ugly American? Has baseball crafted its own image or instead been at the mercy of broader forces shaping our society and the globe? The Empire Strikes Out gives us the sweeping story of how baseball and America are intertwined in the export of “the American way.”

From the Civil War to George W. Bush and the Iraq War, we see baseball’s role in developing the American empire, first at home and then beyond our shores. And from Albert Spalding and baseball’s first World Tour to Bud Selig and the World Baseball Classic, we witness the globalization of America’s national pastime and baseball’s role in spreading the American dream. Besides describing baseball’s frequent and often surprising connections to America’s presence around the world, Elias assesses the effects of this relationship both on our foreign policies and on the sport itself and asks whether baseball can play a positive role or rather only reinforce America’s dominance around the globe. Like Franklin Foer in How Soccer Explains the World, Elias is driven by compelling stories, unusual events, and unique individuals. His seamless integration of original research and compelling analysis makes this a baseball book that’s about more than just sports.

Review
''Good stories and nimble prose along with original research. . . and shrewd analysis and appropriate historical revision -- this book hits it out of the park.'' -- Morning News

''An intriguing look at the game of politics and diamond diplomacy. . . The wealth of neat gems [in The Empire Strikes Out] provide a fresh perspective from many unique angles.'' -- Sporting News

''Elias has written both fiction and nonfiction about baseball and his love for the game shines through. But he also doesn't hold back (or maybe steps up to the plate?), indicting America's pastime for aligning itself with political conservatives and the military, and becoming a tool for globalization. He tells a compelling story made more vivid by thorough research and authoritative writing.'' --Associated Press

''Lively and provocative, this is the 'big picture' look at the entangled, and sometimes nefarious, relationship between our national pastime and U.S. foreign policy. Well crafted, it is, at once, nuanced, imaginative, and provocative. Robert Elias provides a riveting account of how our national pastime has been part and parcel of American diplomacy, militarism, and globalization. This is the definitive account of how baseball has been used to sell and export the American dream.'' -- George Gmelch, author of Baseball without Borders

''The Empire Strikes Out is a rare and wonderful combination of splendid scholarship and lively writing. Robert Elias' affection for baseball illuminates its pages, even when he is unearthing episodes of organized baseball's racism, jingoism, unbridled militarism, and insensitivity to other cultures. Simultaneously, and gracefully, the book describes the development of baseball and its impact overseas as a sort of quasi instrument of American foreign policy. . . . A truly fine work. Highly recommended.'' -- Roger Kahn, author of The Boys of Summer

''Sports have always been ripe for exploitation by those who would pump the politics of militarism through play. No one has ever broken down the history of this process in baseball like Robert Elias. The Empire Strikes Out should be required reading for anyone who considers themselves a baseball fan, or for anyone who has questioned the military misadventures of the past decade. It is an unqualified triumph.'' --Dave Zirin, author of A People's History of Sports in the United States

''The Empire Strikes Out is, without question, a masterful piece of research and writing. Elias has been able to bring first rate insight and analysis into an area -- baseball and foreign policy -- that has never really been adequately covered. I was equally impressed by the quality and depth of research. . . Baseball history has a new mentor.'' -- George McGlynn, author of Dynamics of Fitness, Cross Training for Sports

''Refreshing stuff. . . exceptionally ambitious.'' -- Bill Littlefield, host of Only a Game, WBUR Public Radio, Boston

''The Empire Strikes Out isn't your typical baseball history, chock full of stats and charming anecdotes about baseball's greats, although it does have some of both. But Robert Elias' mission in writing it is to show American foreign policy's effect on baseball and the reverse as well.'' --History Wire

From the Publisher
Mixing sharp political analysis and compelling lore, an eye-opening look at baseball's relationship to American empire, from the revolutionary era to the present

Advance praise:
The Empire Strikes Out is a rare and wonderful combination of splendid scholarship and lively writing. Robert Elias' affection for baseball illuminates its pages, even when he is unearthing episodes of organized baseball's racism, jingoism, unbridled militarism and insensitivity to other cultures. Simultaneously, and gracefully, the book describes the development of baseball and its impact overseas as a sort of quasi instrument of American foreign policy.
The recent internationalization of major-league rosters makes the book particularly timely. A truly fine work. Highly recommended.

Definitely not for the flag waving fan with rose colored glasses!
By Patrick Lagreid
Before we dive into this book, in the interest of full disclosure I feel I should inform you that I was a student of Robert Elias while at the University of San Francisco, where I took his class "The American Dream and the American Pastime: Baseball as a Cultural Mirror of America." It was one of my favorite classes while at USF and he remains a good friend to this day, yet as friends can and should do, they provide objective reviews of each other and their work. Is it a bit weird to be reviewing a former professor's book? Yes - but then again, my classmates and I reviewed his work while in school, so it's not that foreign of a concept. This time it just goes on the internet for everyone to see as opposed to the Scantron form that went in the manila envelope at the end of the semester and was sent to the dean's office or our thoughts on his class discussions that we bantered about over coffee in the cafeteria as we struggled to write papers or watch all of Ken Burns' Baseball documentary. Moving on...

To say that baseball is intertwined with America would be an amazing injustice - and in many more ways and at many deeper levels than you might think. In his latest book, The Empire Strikes Out, Robert Elias shows how baseball transformed from a simple game into a tool of spreading American idealism not only throughout the world but domestically as well.

Elias begins his introductory chapter with a quote from the French Algerian philosopher Albert Camus, stating "The true patriot is one who gives his highest loyalty not to his country as it is, but to what it can and ought to be." This quote, innocent as it might seem at the time, is one that the reader must keep in mind while reading the book, as Elias' critical look at how baseball has been intertwined with American expansion will likely challenge the typical flag-waving fan.

Over the course of 12 chapters, as well as an opinion-laden 13th, Elias take the reader through American history, from 1775 all the way up to 2009, bringing in baseball as a hand-holding partner of the United States' desire to expand throughout the world and convert, control, and cash in on people in other lands.

When one stops and thinks about it, the tie-ins are plentiful - from the drafting of ballplayers to fight in wars, to Barry Zito of the San Francisco Giants and his "Strikeouts for Troops" program. Let's not leave out the San Diego Padres and their camouflage jerseys, or the world tours led by Albert Spalding to promote not only the American way but his budding sporting goods company.

Tie-ins and associations, as well as traditions that come from culture, religion, or national dictate, only have the credence that the participants are willing to give them. There is no inherent necessity to sing The Star Spangled Banner before a baseball game or that a fleet of military jets fly over the stadium before the All-Star Game or the World Series. Yet were one to propose that a ballgame not start with the playing or singing of the anthem, the idea - and possibly the person - would likely be shot down as unpatriotic and ridiculous. Yet the more we allow them to occur, the more they become ingrained and immune from scrutiny.

Certainly some of these relationships have developed without the intention of brain-washing the American people into agreeing with the government's foreign plans, but as Elias shows, a good number have been formed to promote the idea of American superiority and manifest destiny. This is the core of the book -- and what Elias challenges the reader to look at and accept.

The book is full of tidbits of baseball information that Elias has dug up to illustrate his points. From the explanation of where the term "Yankee" comes from at the start of the first chapter, to the origins of the term bullpen, to his comparison of globalization to baseball's farm system of minor league teams, the book is full of "I didn't know that" moments that will enhance your appreciation for the game that you see on the field today. It is this hook that will keep the pages turning, even though the book at times does feel a bit academic for those of us not reporting to classrooms on a regular basis.

What I found to be lacking, at least for those who don't share Elias' academic leaning, is some sauce for the story. Elias searches far and wide for sources and information to support his case, but at certain times over his 294 pages the breadth of information would have been gladly exchanged for some depth and development. I would have loved to been able to share one or two really juicy stories with people after reading it, as opposed to telling them about the book from a flyover perspective.

Elias wastes no time being critical about what he sees as missteps in the United States' history, and it has earned him his share of critics.

Steven V. Roberts of The Washington Post, wasting no time in his review of the book, starts off by saying that "Robert Elias seems to hate America and hate baseball." For me, nothing could be farther from the truth. Being critical of America's approach to globalization, or "Americanization" as some might call it, does not mean that one hates America. Having sat with Elias at several baseball games and exchanged e-mails about the perils and plights of the Giants, Mariners, Diamondbacks and other teams, I assure you he does not hate baseball - at least not the game itself. He has played the game extensively, has children that play baseball, and will gladly engage in an informed conversation on most any topic of the game.

Elias even writes extensively about his relationship with baseball on his website, which further illustrates both his fondness for and dissatisfaction with the game.

While I will not respond to Mr. Roberts' review, he seemed to be offended by Elias' opinions that America's growth has an ugly side, as does the business side of baseball. If you can't swallow the fact that neither baseball nor the United States is perfect and under God's watchful eye and guiding hand, then I suggest you avoid this book. It is not meant for you, and you'd be better off living in your make-believe world, cleaning off your rose-colored glasses.

As Elias will tell you, there is a lot to love about baseball, but there is a lot to be critical about and wary of when looking towards the future. The purity of a parent and child having a catch on a warm day is one to be cherished, as are the squeals of children in a Little League game and the roar of the crowd when the home team wins a ball game. But as fallible creatures, humans have done things that fall short of our potential and should be subjected to not just scrutiny and criticism, but used as mistakes to learn from so that history does not continue to repeat itself. This is what Elias seeks to do and accomplishes it to a level that has clearly irritated critics.

The book, unsurprisingly, is delivered in classic academic form - lots and lots of history, references and examples that all lead up to the final chapter, which is where Elias makes his argument about not just how baseball has been used to spread the American way, but its ramifications and an opinion on how he feels about it. It is in that 13th chapter that Elias serves up the question of how baseball should proceed - either doubling up on its association with patriotism, or letting football take up that battle while becoming a beacon for what the country could, and should, be like going forward.

If you have the ability to read and digest criticism of both the United States and its national pastime, I doubt that you'll be disappointed by The Empire Strikes Out. You may not agree with everything, but I don't think that is Elias' point; it is simply to open your eyes and cast a warning on the future of the country and baseball by taking a critical look at its past. By doing so, he exposes you to a history rich with lofty ideals but littered by faulty executions, and leads you back to the present moment and offers a set of paths to walk down, while ultimately leaving decision about which one to walk down to each of us.

America's Game in War and Peace
By Best Of All
Yes, that is Uncle Sam swinging from the heels on the front of the dust jacket for The Empire Strikes Out: How Baseball Sold U.S. Foreign Policy and Promoted the American Way Abroad (February 2010, The News Press). Historian Robert Elias packs the thick 294 pages of text, 16 pages of photographs and nearly 100 pages of notes with an intriguing look at the game of politics and diamond diplomacy.

"Baseball was played in America as far back as the Revolutionary War and was first designated as the `national pastime' in the 1850s. Since then, the sport has worked hard to maintain that status," writes Elias. "It has also sought to equate itself with American masculinity and patriotism, and with U.S. military endeavors in particular.

"When the United States began projecting itself as a global power in the late nineteenth century, baseball was enlisted in America's imperial quests - helping the nation colonize other lands, from the Caribbean to Asia to the Pacific. The game was regularly part of the U.S. `civilizing missions' launched abroad, either militarily or economically, and sometimes bolstered by the forces of `muscular Christianity.'"

The wealth of neat gems provide a fresh perspective from many unique angles. Thomas Jefferson was not impressed with the game, but Abraham Lincoln's enjoyment as a player and spectator may have saved baseball from an even sharper decline during the Civil War.

"The National Association of Base Ball Players cut short its 1861 season and ball playing diminished generally. Baseball's fortunes revived, however, with stories of Abraham Lincoln's devotion to the game," Elias writes. "It's said that when a visiting delegation was about to hand him the 1860 Republican presidential nomination, Lincoln was out on a baseball field and insisted on taking his at bat before accepting the offer. Later he took time out from prosecuting the Civil War to watch ball games."

Sometimes the linkage with foreign policy produced a strike out. A good example is in the Philippines, which began fielding quality national teams while being governed by the U.S., but the rise of anti-Americanism brought a decline in the popularity.

"By 1919, the Filipino teams excelled: the national team won the Far Eastern Games that year, and again in 1921, 1923, 1925, and 1930," writes Elias. "Colonial exploitation again incited general anti-American rebellion in the Philippines, which spilled onto the baseball field. But by 1923, baseball began losing favor there: it was implicated in the U.S. quest to improve the American lifestyle.

"In response, the Sporting News recommended U.S. withdrawal from the Philippines, because any people who refused to embrace baseball `will never be suited to live under the Stars and Stripes.'"

And getting beyond the recent headlines is a reminder that the sport remains a major export. The People's Republic of China is home to a professional league and there is growing interest from Major League Baseball to assist in the training of players to develop talent that may be poised to one day make the leap to the big leagues in North America.

"And as Jim Allen has observed, `The knowledge that Asian fans will watch MLB on TV and buy mass quantities of merchandise has transformed MLB owners 180 degrees - from arrogant isolationists to global thinkers,'" Elias writes. "In the early twenty-first century, almost anywhere one looked abroad, there were new baseball initiatives.

"In Iraq, in the lead-up to the 2003 U.S. attack, a tongue-in-cheek rumor claimed the CIA had devised a new covert operation to topple Saddam Hussein: `They're going to name him the Kansas City Royals manager. Inevitably, everyone in that job gets fired and is never heard from again.' In the real world, it worked out a little differently."

Take me out to the ball game
By S. Pupini
The research that went into this book is evident in the detailed explication of its central thesis - that baseball is and has been an international ambassador for the United States, sometimes for good and sometimes not so good. It is densely packed with examples of both. It is a book for fans of baseball and for students of public policy.

An Excellent Primer of 'Singular Path' Northern Taoism.
By Brian A. Glennon
A training manual written in the form of a story, the book: 'SEVEN TAOIST MASTERS: A Folk Novel of China' (c. 1990) translated by Eva Wong, introduced the reader to a blend of myth and history to both entertain and teach, in the form of lectures, the Taoist philosophy of Wang Ch'ung-yang and Ch'iu Ch'ang-ch'un. History had recorded that the disciple "Ch'iu Ch'ang-ch'un was befriended by Kublai Khan and was appointed court high priest during the reign of the first Yu'an Emporer" (p.xvii). And Wang Ch'ung-yang lived during the Sung (1127-1279) and Yu'an (1271-1368) dynasties.

Wang Ch'ang-yang (the rebirth of yang, or the rejuvenation of mind & body) was regarded as one of the greatest patriarchs of the school of True Reality (or the school of Complete Reality) and his students, the seven Taoist masters, were of the Northern School of Taoism, that branch of Taoism which advocates the 'singular path', where enlightenment and immortality are achieved through meditation and chi-kung exercises, it is the closest to Buddhism and Ch'an meditation of the Taoist sects. Ch'iu Ch'ang-ch'un, one of the seven masters, founded the Lung-men (Dragon Gate)sect of Taoism.

SEVEN TAOIST MASTERS presentd a mix of myth and history in the most appealing way to the reader conforming to the Taoist pedagogy of story telling to instruct as more accessible in an intuitive reading than as analytic reading of a text. The main character, Wang Ch'ung-yang, was approached by two immortals, Lu and Chung-li Ch'uan, dressed as beggars, who had to convert mortals into Taoist immortals before the flowering of the immortal peach so that the Empress of Heaven wouldn't have to eat it alone. While Buddhism emphasizes reincarnation, Taoism strives for immortality, by means of internal alchemy, the actual transformation of body & soul through various Taoist efforts and personal sacrifices of the apprentice.

So in the SEVEN TAOIST MASTERS, the experiences of Wang Ch'ung-yang are used as a vehicle to describe the attitudes and situations for Taoist training and the obstacles usually encountered on the road to enlightenment. The seven Taoist masters each represent seven different approaches to the Tao, and each master must negotiate an obstacle in their own way on the path to enlightenment. In this particular theology of Taoism is the belief that destiny can be changed by the actions of people, reward and retribution will be given according to one's behaviour.

The book, SEVEN TAOIST MASTERS, contained a number of typographical and grammatical errors, such as "propserous" (p. 89), and "emerge" for merge throughout the work, and a number of ancient Chinese woodblock illustrations; yet overall, this is an excellent introduction to the Northern School of Taoism using a primer originally written for the training of Taoists priests. Also, please read TAOIST MASTER CHUANG (c. 2000) by Michael R. Saso, to gain further insight into the life and training of a Taoist disciple.

excellent insight
By greglor
This book offers an excellent insight into Taoist philosophy. In a series of tales about the seven taoist masters, it shows how each of these 6 men and one woman have attained enlightenment, and the snares that they had to pass to reach it. From these tales we can come to understand Taoist philosophy, and contrast it with Buddhist philosophy (in the interactions between Buddhist and Taoist masters). The stories are interesting, and full of meaning on many levels. This book is a much better beginning point to understand Taoism than the Tao of Pooh.

this was a lot of fun!
By Kurt K. Gilman
This book givers credence to the Toaist practice of painless teaching through storytelling. It was a joy to read and the depth of the stories became clear once the reading was completed. If you are looking for an entertaining read with a little Toaist history, this book fills the bill quite nicely.

Seduced by the beauty of Gisele, yet irresistibly drawn to the intelligence of Mathilde, a proud woman as complex as her secrets, Henry accepts their offer. But as invaders close in, it is Mathilde who must dare to trust her deepest desires…and the man willing to fight for all he is worth to prove his honor.

From Publishers Weekly
In this touching but predictable romance set in medieval England, two unmarried—and hence unprotected—young noblewomen, desperate to save their late father's estate from conniving cousin Roald de Sayres, seek help from the only available knight in the neighborhood: the handsome, carefree, impoverished ladies' man Sir Henry d'Alton. Though beautiful Lady Giselle initially attracts Henry's eye, it's her homely but bold younger sister, Lady Mathilde—whose reputation has suffered a ruinous blow at the hands of Roald—who begins to win his similarly tarnished heart. While cameo appearances by characters from previous books in Moore's Brothers in Arms series, such as Merrick from The Unwilling Bride, may thrill the author's established fans, a more thorough recap of characters' shared history would better explain the wandering Sir Henry's need to prove himself. Fortunately, colorful and compelling details of life in the Middle Ages, from battle strategies to food, abound. (Feb.)

"Ms. Moore is a master of the medieval time period." -- Romantic Times

About the Author
Margaret Moore actually began her writing career at the age of eight, when she and a friend would make up stories together. She also loved to read and many years later graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree in English Literature. After reading a romance by Kathleen Woodiwiss, Margaret took a course in popular fiction writing and through that, found Romance Writers of America. Three years later, in 1991, she sold her first historical romance. And the rest, as they say, is history!

pleasurable medieval romance
By A Customer
In 1243 Martin informs Sir Roald De Sayre that he has insured that the garrison at Ecclesford has the worst weapons and ill trained knights in England, setting it up for failure. Roald pays off the former Ecclesford Commander by killing him.

Not long afterwards, with their father dead due to the betrayal of his Commander Martin, sisters Mathilde and Giselle know their home Ecclesford is in jeopardy of odious Roald taking it over though the older sibling inherited the castle. They need a knight to protect them so they venture to a nearby inn where they enlist the drunken Sir Henry D'Alton. He agrees to help because he loathes Roald. He changes his plans especially after learning that the beautiful quiet Giselle is quite a prize catch since through her he also can be the lord of Ecclesford. To his chagrin, the mouthy protective younger sister Mathilde heats his blood, but first he must deal with the odious Roald who will do anything to take Ecclesford including taking the new owner without her agreeing.

HERS TO COMMAND is a pleasurable medieval romance that contains a wonderful romance between the knight and the "termagant. The relationship between Henry and Mathilde is delightful as she rips his skin for even considering her sibling while he rips his skin for considering her. Though Roald is too nasty of a sociopath, fans will enjoy the" shrew's" taming of the knight. No one writes a medieval romance quite like this talented author.

I didn't like this books ending.
By Hi All
I liked the beginning and hated the way she ended the book. The heroine was stupid at the end. I liked Henry in the previous books I hated the fact Moore made a ruin of him at the end of the book. He deserved a happier end to his story than what he got. He's a humiliated washed up physically ruined knight at the end. After all he did for the others in previous books it was a sad end to his story. I don't mean that because he is deformed either. He was a just a such a good character I didn't want to have anything bad happen to him. Expecially since it could have ended up better.

The Truth About the Shroud of Turin: Solving the Mystery, by Robert K. Wilcox

The shroud of Turin is one of history’s most controversial and perplexing relics. Many believe it to be the genuine burial shroud of Jesus Christ. Some hypothesize the image on the shroud was created through a rare scientific phenomenon. Still others think the shroud is a fake, proven—through carbon tests in 1988—to be a clever forgery. In The Truth About the Shroud of Turin, investigative reporter Robert K. Wilcox applies his investigative eye and compelling writing style to this mysterious artifact. Featuring new evidence, The Truth About the Shroud of Turin offers new insight into this baffling mystery and offers compelling evidence that the shroud is the authentic burial shroud of Jesus Christ.

From the Author
This is my most important book because it has to do with the most important issue in life - life and death. I'm a journalist by trade. I do the best I can to give you the facts, pro and con. I would be derelict in my duty if I didn't. Both sides enables YOU to make the call.

The Shroud of Turin is a scientific mystery - not a religious tract. After 100 years of scientific inquiry in the relic science has not been able to solve the shroud's mysteries. It's greatest proponents are scientists - not religionists. Carbon 14 tests made in the 1980s were wrong. You can read why in the book. The more scientists examine the facts of the shroud, the more mystery they uncover.

If you like true mystery, if you are in anyway concerned with history and religion, if you are a Christian and are interested in the history of your faith, The Truth About the Shroud of Turin will be well worth your time. Whatever you are or believe, this book will challenge you to come up with answers. And if you do, please let me know.

Investigative journalism at its best!
By Gabe
I read Robert K. Wilcox's first book on the mysterious Shroud about a year ago. The present book is a revision and significant updating of that first book, bringing the reader completely up-to-date with the latest scientific findings.

Wilcox takes the approach of an investigative journalist. He comes to the Shroud with no evident preconception or religious/irreligous prejudice. He is thorough in exploring every conceivable hypothesis of what the Shroud is -- from the Shroud being a Medieval painted forgery to it being as old as the time of Christ and from the same Palestine area. Wilcox takes the reader as he travels to continents and countries to interview and consult with a diverse range of experts, including archeologists, artists (painters), photographers, theologians, and top atomic physicists. He is facile at translating complex scientific concepts to make them readily understandable to the lay reader. One by one, Wilcox demonstrates how each alternate hypothesis for the Shroud falls apart, leaving in the end only one possible conclusion. Readers of the secular rationalist bent will appreciate Wilcox's meticulous empiricism, while readers of Christian faith will find their faith vindicated. This is not to say that the two groups are mutually exclusive categories. In fact, the Shroud is the best confirmation that faith and science are not antagonistic, but can be mutually reinforcing.

In the end, what is most intriguing about the Shroud is that its astounding characteristics and true nature are increasingly revealed as human beings grow more in knowledge and our science becomes increasingly advanced and sophisticated. Instead of science showing the Shroud to be a fake, it is with science that the Shroud's miraculous character is revealed.

A Quickie Make-Over
By Richard Masloski
When I ordered this book, I thought it was brand, spanking new. Little did I know it was a makeover of a book written in 1977! And a book I already had in my collection - somewhere. (I have alot of books! Mostly from Amazon!) Anyway - I reread the book to find what was newly added to it. 37 pages out of a 234 page book, by my count. What is new - SPOILER ALERT - is what has been hinted at all along since the controversial Carbon 14 datings of 1988...and that is that the test samples were not from the original Shroud at all, but pieces of patchwork from the time scientifically deduced by the testing. This issue was being addressed almost as soon as the test results were back, in addition to other theories as to why the date was medieval and not closer to the time of Jesus.

So what Mr. Wilcox has done, in effect, is what was done to the Shroud. A small patch of it was sewn into a corner, a 5 1/2 x 3 1/2 snippet compared to the Shroud's overall 14 foot length - this was allegedly done sometime in 1508 and this is what was dated. With this revamped book Wilcox has done much the same thing: added a snippet to an old dusty book and got it on the market for this coming Easter's public showing of the Shroud by its Turin guardians. Great timing!

I am genuinely mystified by the Shroud. When I had first heard the Carbon 14 results I said to myself, okay, there's a date indicating forgery...and most all of science was so smug about the dating's infallibility - but they could NOT explain how the image got on the Shroud. Nor did they take into consideration the possibility that if the Shroud contains the image of Christ at the moment of his resurrection (since the image is more of a scorch and NOT a painting whatsoever)then that "miraculous" moment may have altered the Carbon content of the cloth. Anyway, it is a genuine enigma of enormous proportions. But the depth of its many, many wonders and mysteries are only quickly told in Wilcox's book. It is too rapid and too easy a read and too much of what may have been relevant in its first edition is left in now as padding. The NEW information seems completely rushed...as if to meet a press deadline. Why not just write a brand new book??? Well, Time is money, you know.

There are two books out there that are much, much more in-depth and much, much more convincing than the work now being discussed. And they are THE RESURRECTION OF THE SHROUD by Mark Antonacci (published in 2000)and Ian Wilson's THE BLOOD AND THE SHROUD (written in 1998 but it also has been reworked with all of the latest data.) Both of these books are immensely more compelling and captivating than Wilcox's quickie. Even the photographic section pales in comparison to either of the other two works. And if you want a truly beautifully illustrated book on the Shroud - and also one containing much more informative than the Wilcox work - look for THE TURIN SHROUD: THE ILLUSTRATED EVIDENCE by Ian Wilson and Barrie Schwortz.

An artifact such as the Shroud of Turin needs a much more in-depth, in-detail approach....for its implications are immense. Wilcox's book (even in its original state) seems more of a patch-work quilt than a truly methodical analysis of this enduring enigma. It's so-so for a quick read, but you will definitely want to know a heck of alot more after reading it. And you'll find written and visual treasures in the other books mentioned above that are barely probed in THE TRUTH ABOUT THE SHROUD OF TURIN. Even the title and its subtitle - SOLVING THE MYSTERY - are grandiose distortions as to what the book truly contains and achieves.

Happy Easter to one and all!

Compelling Mystery
By Papaya
I guess I'm behind the times but I knew little about the Shroud of Turin when I ran into this book, very reasonably priced. Material evidence of Jesus? That was interesting. I had some idea of Veronica's Veil, but this ancient cloth has a strange total body image, front and back, on it. It has a tradition of being Jesus's burial cloth and a very plausible history back to the tomb in the Bible. But it's the science about this linen cloth that is really impressive. The image is like a photographic negative. But in fact something etched the images in such precision that it goes beyond a photo. Sophisticated computers can read the image to the point that a 3-dimensional holograph can be made of the man in the shroud. No paintings or conventional photos can be converted like that. Wilcox, a journalist, weaves a good story here - a great story. He starts with the first photographs taken in 1898. That was the start of scientific interest in the shroud. Doctors say the man in the shroud pictures is a real corpse. It exhibits astounding anatomical realism. It's not a traditional Christ which argues against a forgery. Some scientists say they can see flowers in the images, like funeral wreaths, which are native to Jerusalem and only bloom around Easter. The Vatican says it's found documents that plug important gaps in the shroud's history. For someone like me who didn't know much about the shroud this is a great primer. Wilcox takes the reader on a search literally around the world. He apparently thinks the shroud is authentic but lets the reader decide. This is a genuine mystery of awesome proportions and those wanting to get an up-to-the-minute read on this phenomenon should get this book. You won't be disappointed!

Veteran paddler John Dowd’s readable, well-illustrated guide still stands as "the bible" for both new and experienced kayakers.

Sea Kayaking covers the basics of equipment and technique, including types of paddles and strokes. But the key focus in this revised and updated edition is on sound seamanship and good risk management: how to read the weather and the water, how to navigate, how to travel with a group. Drawing on his long experience paddling in all climates, Dowd presents practical, concrete advice on dealing with potential hazards (from surf to sea ice to sharks) and carrying out rescues. The book contains new photographs and numerous helpful charts, diagrams and illustrations. It also covers expedition planning, instructional methods and sea kayaking for people with disabilities.

As more and more paddlers take to the water, this classic guide continues to be required reading for those seeking adventure on the open ocean.

Comprehesive and readable, good practical advice
By A Customer
I first read his 1988 edition as I was just getting into sea kayaking. I have since built 3 singles and a triple and have done week-long trips in Prince William Sound, Puget Sound, Sea of Cortez, and New Zealand. So I'm now fairly experienced and yet still learn (relearn?) new information and techniques when I reread it.
I especially appreciate Dowd's emphasis on self-rescues as opposed to assisted rescues. So many rescues that work in a pool with an unloaded boat are impossible in 38F water, 3-foot seas, with 150 pounds of gear in your touring kayak. And yet that is when you really need a solid rescue technique.
His references to some of the epoch, historic and recent, long-distance expeditions are inspirational. When you're slogging 5 miles back to camp against a 15-knot wind, it helps to remember that people have paddled across the Atlantic and that your task is doable.
Be safe, go see cool places, happy paddling. -David Thomas

The Bible of the Sport
By Michael J. Edelman
There are a number of good books on kayak technique, but Dowd's is the bible of the sport, and with good reason. He's been kayaking for over thirty years, and he's done some of the most difficult voyages in kayaking history. He's specific in his recommendations, but open minded, too. He favors feathered paddles, but he understands the advantage of unfeatehred paddles, and allows how they may be superior in many conditions.
Dowd's advice isn't based on theory, but on experience. He's not afraid to admit his own mistakes, and in this latest edition, he desribes how he's changed a lot of his opinons on the rescue techniques he's taught in the past. He's realistic, and realizes that not every kayaker is going to develop a bombproof roll or be able to perform the Borze's paddlefloat rescue; he endorses alternate techniques like he (somewhat contentious) Sea Wings.
What it boils down to is this: Whatever other books you may own, whatever lessons you may have taken, whatever your level of experience- you need this book.

One of the best books on Sea Kayaking that I have ever read!
By W. Merriman
I am not an avid reader, and I usually lose interest in a book and place it on the shelf mid way through if the author doesn't keep my interest. John Dowd had not only captivated my interest, but made it hard for me to put it down. Some of the best and informative information about Sea Kayaking that I have read yet. It should be a "Must Read" for any person involved in the sport of Sea Kayaking, beginner to novice. 5 Star Rating above all others!!!
