B. Alan Wallace spent fourteen years as a Buddhist monk, ordained by H. H. the Dalai Lama. Now we're getting somewhere!!

Mr. Wallace does a Yeoman's job of condensing, polishing, explaining and reviewing ancient contemplative theories & practices; from both Buddhist and Christian perspectives and then uses modern science (quantum physics and neuroscience) to elucidate and flesh out the nature of the archaic but extremely relevant wisdom.

Between rigorously researched historical accounts and postulations of meditative principles, we are treated to exercises with which to practice and integrate those principles. This was quite a boon for me as my next step on the path is to learn and practice some form of meditation, and this book went a considerable distance in whetting my appetite.

The author articulates some very excellent, wise and cogent rationale as to why materialist/reductionist philosophy is just as stagnating, dogmatic and possibly harmful as the medieval R.C. Church and their insistence on the Ostrich maneuver. I think Mr. Wallace would agree fanaticism - any fanaticism - is at least counterproductive and at most, deadly. A Mind that is in balance will serve the world, its people and its master far more productively and joyfully than one in an impulsive, fanatical frenzy.

My only nit-picky complaints are: 1.) Alan, in most cases painted with a pretty broad brush, I wish he would have added some more detail; 2.) That said, the book could have been a bit longer - expanding on the exercises and maybe some more historical context; 3.) Alan is obviously a very practiced mediator and the language, analogies, metaphors and similes he used were to me; a bit too esoteric. I am at best a nascent practitioner, thus some of the concepts as explained were somewhat daunting.

Great work - 5 stars on the board, but I'm going with a real 4 ½ today.

UPDATE! After reading, rereading and reading again - the last 4 or 5 chapters in this book, I have come to the following two conclusions: 1.) My nit-picks as stated above should be completely ignored; 2.) This work is replete with lucid argument and wonderful, (nearly breathtaking) detailed explanation as to the congruencies and parallels between Eastern & Western contemplative traditions and modern, that is to say: quantum physics. "Mind in Balance" is now in my top three favorites of all time, easily a must read 5 plus star effort.

Extraordinary

The book deals a devastating blow to the cognitive sciences as practiced today. Wallace argues that cognitive scientists and neuroscientists hold materialism -- the view that consciousness can be explained on a physical level -- as dogma. These fields tend to dismiss what may be learned from direct contemplation of the mind. In a simple and brilliant stroke, Wallace shows materialism to be a faith-based view. Why? The physical basis of consciousness has not been established. Wallace quotes Christoph Koch, a leading neuroscientist at CalTech, who says that the relationship between consciousness and the physical brain remains a mystery.

Another deft move in the book is Wallace's revival of introspection as a means of understanding the mind. He revisits the early history of modern psychology when William James viewed introspection as a research method. Later, during the rise of behaviorism and the cognitive revolution, introspection was pooh-poohed as "unscientific." Behaviorists believed anything that could not be observed and measured empirically was not real. Wallace exposes this as nonsense. He suggests that meditation, being a direct experience of the mind, is akin to James' introspection, and has yielded profound insights into consciousness which can inform the cognitive sciences.

A third line of inquiry explores whether nature has an absolute reality outside of human perceptions, or instead, nature can only be understood through the language and tools we bring to bear on it (a Phenomenalist view). Wallace highlights the work of distinguished contemporary scholars and scientists who have arrived at the latter view. He ties this view back to the Buddhist teaching that the entire world emerges from the "substrate" and returns to it. It is striking that certain strands of Western science and philosophy have ended up in the same territory as Buddhist contemplative wisdom.

Throughout the book, Wallace fishes out prominent and obscure figures from history: Pythagoras, Nicholas of Cusa, Franklin Merrell-Wolff, Richard Feynman, and Düdjom Lingpa, to name just a few. Wallace nimbly traverses the fields of history, philosophy, science, and religion.

The author's voice is lucid, even-keeled, and confident. But taken as a whole, the book deals a withering blow to certain received truths of Western science. The contrast between the calm lucidity of the prose and the force of its argument is quite pleasing! But the book is much more than a critique of science as we know it; it offers a vision for how a contemplative perspective can enrich scientific inquiry.

Wallace's ideas should be considered carefully by cognitive scientists of all stripes, philosophers of science, and anyone interested in the encounter between Western and Buddhist worldviews. I also give it the highest recommendation to any inquiring person who is willing to let his curiosity lead him into new territory.

The perfect book

This book was exactly what I wanted and needed. I had always wanted to know the origins of meditation and contemplation. There are so many new age gurus teaching new age techniques, and what I wanted was the authentic techniques, that had been tried and tested. I wanted to get as close to the origins as possible, and that's exactly what this book offered me. Raised as a Christian I wanted to know how it all tied into Christianity, and Mind In The Balance so nicely brought it all together for me, and really helped create an even less dualistic view for me. I was also interested in what the latest research and studies science had on the subject, and this too was included in the book. I always thought that meditation was just about sitting on my cushion and not thinking about anything. Mind In The Balance opened my uneducated view, and offered many different types of meditation that I find exciting "exploration of the mind" as Alan Wallace calls it, is so much better then my previous attempts at spacing out. And one of the greatest gifts this book gave me was a genuine and lasting motivation to explore my mind, and reach my inner depths of perfection. Thank you!!!!

David Johnston has been developing green building programs for the last 10 years. Named one of the top 50 remodelers in the country by Remodeling Magazine in 1990, he developed the first green remodeling program in the country in Boulder, Colorado, trains remodelers across the US, and is creating a national green certification program for the National Association of the Remodeling Industry. He is President of What's Working and Lightworks Construction, Inc.. Kim Master is a Green Building Consultant and Senior Associate with What's Working. She was previously Ecommerce/Project Manager with Care2.com, the largest environmental website for healthy living and a healthy planet. Both are from Boulder, Colorado.

A+ Informative jumping off point for people interested in environmental and social responsibility.

I didn't read it cover to cover but it was not the type of book to be read like that. All in all I'd say it does a good job covering what is a pretty broad topic; there are so many "green" strategies out there and it is hard to discuss them all. I thought it did a good job on the three or so different main categories and it connected them back to the common denominator. Save, protect, and preserve natural resources. It covers site and land usage, energy and water conservation, and interior and exterior material usage. The author took the difficult path of trying to sell `green' building as potentially cost effective, whereas in reality I think it is important to realize that capital costs will definitely be higher and it is hard to predict/confirm short term viable pay-backs. Once you put a value on your conscience and the long term big picture it makes obvious sense, reasonable pay-backs are definitely attainable but they come from diligent work and coordinated evaluation and integration.

The author's section describing his own `Green Remodeling' projects was a great introduction in general to the integrated design/build process especially for people who are not accustomed to the ebb and flow of a construction project. His `green' strategies won't necessarily work for all of us, but I think he makes that clear too, the more significant thing to take from this section is the mentality of patience and acceptance that it will take to stay focused on and achieve your goals as an owner.

He did a good job describing and detailing a huge portion of all the `green' building approaches, including all kinds of energy efficient systems, ways to address occupant comfort and health, and how to ponder and address social and environmental responsibility in every design decision. He developed sections on all the various rooms in a house so that the reader could evaluate what they really want from their construction project and then how to address each and achieve success within the specific project's constraints (time, budget, and goals). He gave good ideas: like to lay extra conduit in trenches so that at a later date you have an efficient way of expanding capacity without having to waste resources to repeat a job.

I would be confidant in recommending this book to anyone focused on having a positive influence on environmental responsibility. I didn't think it was the most grammatically well written book I've read but it doesn't need to be. In real life it should be used as a reference and ultimately be covered with coffee stains, grease, and saw dust. As one evaluates green design strategies it is important to recognize that there is some disparity between approaches, some things you can do don't even cost a penny, whereas others require a substantial capital investment, neither one is necessarily more `green' then the other but it is the cognizant evaluation of each and focused approach that will ultimately promote a healthier environment in your own backyard and around the world. Take `em or leave `em, but consider and evaluate them all as integrated parts of the systems of your project, the systems of your own life style, the systems of your local community, and the systems of the world.

This book has been my constant companion during my remodel. I have even passed it on to several architects who have used it on recent projects. It is clearly written, and has been a terrific aid through a rather complicated remodeling process.

The essential manifesto for the revolution in Green Building

I'm a building contractor, therefore I appreciate that this book covers every aspect of Green Building in a way that I can look up easily. The lay out is simple and readable, yet it dosen't "Dumb Down" the important building concepts. I've yet to find a Green Building book this in-depth in my 25 years in the industry!

Perfect Balance

This is a masterful book, on a fascinating concept that has depth and resonance. It's well written, and comprehensive while staying short enough to comfortably read. If you want to go further, it's extensively footnoted with a complete bibliography and index. While we might sometimes hear of the "yin and yang of buying a toaster oven" we really don't have any idea of what this means other than hot/cold up/down. And as is gently explained, hundreds of years of Chinese thought and practice lead to an understanding of the nature of the universe and ourselves that is much deeper than the ends of a yardstick.

The book shows us forces are not dualistic. But rather interdependent, reciprocal, and intertwined. And more. Yinyang illustrates change. And illustrates emergent properties (the circle) that are different from any of the constituents. And more. It illustrates consistent patterns: "It is like the standing wave that emerges in a moving stream, where the water particles are constantly changing while the pattern persists." History, cosmology, Western & Chinese philosophy, pictorial thinking, psychology, religion, and much more interplay in this extraordinary book. I hope you find this review useful.

An absolutely brilliant work of deep, sympathetic scholarship.

As a longtime student of Chinese philosophy - and the practical application of those philosophies in martial arts - I'd thought I knew something about Yingyang. This book made me realize both how little I actually did know about the concept - but more importantly, how little I was able to put into practice. Dr. Wang's extremely wide ranging scholarship illumines Yinyang in a way I've never seen - and makes the concept a part of one's lived experience, and not simply an interesting philosophical idea. Now, this is not a light read. It's an extremely dense, compact work of scholarship. But that very effort of reading ensures that the concepts don't remain superficial - but are integrated into one's ideas, thinking, and action.

My only reason for 4 rather than 5 stars is I feel the book over emphasizes Daoism, without giving sufficient attention to the Confucian tradition - but that's not uncommon. And a few areas could stand more aggressive editing.

But those points are minor. This book is a model for what scholarly philosophical writing should be.

Correlative thinking is yinyang thinking. For example, yinyang is not just an important tool for grasping the cosmic body, namely the universe; it is also applied to the micro body: "human flesh". The human body bears the same rhythm and properties as the greater cosmic body. Yinyang presents a justification for this association and a conceptional tool for understanding it.
Yingyang is a thinking paradigm. Paradigms precede and shape all the operations of: rational thinking methodically, theory building, the determination of facts, and perception. A paradigm is a conceptual configuration that is demonstrated and learned by example, providing a lens through which one can view the world.
At the same time, yingyang can also be seen as a constellation of lay beliefs and practices, functioning explicitly and implicitly, in activities ranging from philosophy to health care, and from warfare to a way of life.
The bases of any yinyang distinction is difference, opposition, and contradiction. Any two sides are connected and related, but they are also opposed in some way. It is also this difference that enables yinyang as a STRATEGY - to act sucessfully, we must sometimes be more yin and sometimes more yang, depending on context.
The reader can surmise the ambiguity and complexity in saying that two things "are like yin and yang". Everything is bound up in a plurality of relationships, at the sametime; related both to multiple things, and to the same thing in multiple ways. But yinyang thought, really is a type of triadic thinking, centered on the thirdness, that results from the interaction between yin and yang. The whole is made of the interaction between parts; not the individual parts, themselves.
Surprisingly, the focal point of yinyang as a strategy - is on generation and transformation/a chicken giving birth to an egg; and as the egg hatching into a chicken. The production that stem from both of these kinds of generation, brings out new phases of existence. Yinyang plays a central role in such generative processes.

Gordon-Smith's intricate third 1920s mystery to feature writer-sleuth Jack Haldean (after 2008's Mad About the Boy) opens with an intriguing setup: George Lassiter, a down-on-his-luck South African, breaks into what he thinks is an unoccupied London house, only to overhear what he's sure is a woman's murder. When the police collar him for burglary, he relates what happened, but the authorities find no evidence of foul play at the house. Fortunately, Haldean, who flew with Lassiter during WWI, learns of his situation and goes to his rescue. When Lassiter tells Haldean he's been cheated out of a bequest by an imposter, Haldean discovers that the people whose house Lassiter burglarized were his relatives, who may be tied not only to the scam that deprived Lassiter of the bequest but to a series of murders reminiscent of the Ripper killings. While the answers to the various puzzles may not satisfy every reader, Gordon-Smith does a solid job presenting fair-play clues. (Aug.)

As If By Magic

London is the venue for old family secrets, dastardly doings and shenanigans in the world of aviation, the best so far. There is an enthusiasm for this lost world, which is as enjoyable as the actual murder mystery. Here is a book that sets a high standard. Very highly recommended.

I'll be honest; I had the opening of this book simmering for ages before I worked out a solution that not only added up, but effectively led into the rest of the story.   Because I love the opening and didn't want to rush it.  It's partly autobiographical, a distillation of memories of being alone in London on a freezing night with sleet in the rain.  London is a major player in Magic, from the streets and houses that are so cozy on the inside and so alien and forbidding without, to the network of secret rivers that run beneath the streets (the culverted Fleet for instance) to the mighty Thames flowing between the tree-lined Embankment.  Then another element came in.  My Dad was a Bomber pilot in World War 11 and I've always been fascinated by early aircraft.  Poking round a second-hand Manchester bookshop one day, I came across a discarded school prize, All About The Aircraft Of Today published in 1919. I was the first to read it - I had to slit the pages - and what I found was pure gold.  There were detailed descriptions of Crossleys' long-vanished aircraft factory in Stockport, air routes, real and planned and plans for the Short Brothers' extraordinary new flying-boat.   I simply had to get it into a book.There was a third element, too.  I'd taken part in a stage magic show and the result - well, it alerted me to a certain sort of magic, and, as if by magic, I had the magic of the title.

Murder Most Magical

As If By Magic seems an entirely fitting title for this third novel in the Jack Haldean series. Dolores Gordon-Smith's capacity for tortuous plotting is intrinsically absorbing, but even more remarkable is the way that all the threads are drawn together at the end - as if by magic! For fans of Agatha Christie and other redoubtable 'plotters' this novel holds considerable appeal. However, it is not simply the ingenuity of the plot itself which holds our attention, but also the way that the 1920s social scene is so smoothly incorporated: the fusion of sedate tea parties and dope-ridden nightclubs comes over well; and the excitement of fast cars - and in particular fast aeroplanes - beautifully recaptured. Gordon-Smith has an unerring capacity to evoke the physical tangibilities of experience: her ability to recreate the the sense of cold, isolation and bleakness of London on a drear Friday night is brilliant - and unnerving! As indeed is her acute perception of the anxieties and disillusions of personal relationships. I can recommend this as an entertaining but also a reflective read.

terrific historical mystery

In the 1920s in London, South African expatriate George Lassiter breaks into a house he believes is empty. However, instead he hears voices in what sounds like the murder of a woman. Not sure what to do, he goes to leave quietly only the police arrest him accusing him of attempted burglary.

He tells the cops what he believes happened inside the house, but they find no evidence of a homicide. Private investigator Jack Haldean learns of his WWI flying mate's problems and goes to get him out of jail. George explains to Jack what he heard, why he was in the house and who owns it. Jack believes George that a murder probably occurred and that he was cheated by an impostor out of his inheritance. Jack investigates and learns the owners of the house are relatives of George who probably abetted the con artist who stole his bequest. Jack begins to piece together something more horrifying as an apparent serial killer is the loose while London remains ignorant.

The third Jack Haldean 1920s whodunit (see A FATE WORST THAN DEATH and MAD ABOUT THE BOY) is a terrific historical mystery that brings to life London through the eyes of an emigre author just after WWI. The story line is fast-paced from the moment George breaks into a house he believes he owns. Fans will relish Jack's inquiry as he finds much more than he expected.

Better and better!

The third entry in the Jack Haldean series takes off with a mystery wrapped in an enigma. Who is George Lassiter? Why is he sloping about London in evening clothes, yet destitute? Why did he see a dead blonde where no dead blondes could be found? Dolores Gordon-Smith comes into her own in this volume. The tension is tight, the pacing is pitch-perfect. I was enthralled by the intriguing, intricate plot. There is a distinct change of pace from the two previous entries, much in keeping with the change of scenery from the pastoral surroundings of Hesperus to the swiftly-moving world of 1922 London with its glitzy restaurants and seedy night clubs. While the first two books read more like cosy mysteries, this entry had teeth. It is with admiration that we witness Gordon-Smith's skillful translocation of Jack from country house guest sleuth to gritty, pavement pounding gum-shoe without losing any of his initial charm or changing in any fantastical way. He remains as he has always been - observant, canny, and yet still touchingly noble. The only defect to be found is that Jack's history isn't fleshed out more - his character, his motivations are still a little bit too stock-in-trade to be anything more than a pleasant persona with which to while away a few hours. It is to be hoped that Gordon-Smith will delve deeper into Jack's character and background in future volumes. While only a slight defect in an overall admirable entry into the annals of mystery fiction, it's actually a tribute to the author's skill that we, the readers, wish to know more about Jack.

Although I was able to formulate an inkling as to who the ultimate culprit or culprits (no spoilers here!) were, the deftly interwoven plot points, methods and motivation behind the crime was very clever and kept me guessing right up to the end - a very great pleasure! It would be easy for an author to be heavy handed with this material, and yet Gordon- Smith maintained her light tone with her vivid prose and compelling pacing, despite some genuinely grisly scenes, which were relayed with tact and intimation, rather than over-the-top, unnecessary shock-factor detail. Well-done!

Herrlich sarkastisches Buch über verschiedene Persönlichkeitsstörungen, und wie sie einem im Management zupass kommen. Schön auf den Punkt und so traurig wahr. Der brillante Gunter Dueck hat dies alles aus der Position des fassungslosen Vernünftigen dekonstruiert, doch enthirnt hektische BWLer werden es womöglich sogar als echte Anleitung lesen, wie sie schaupielern sollten.
Dieser Zwiespalt lässt mich eher zu vier bis viereinhalb Sternen neigen.

Good Book but.....

Bought the kindle version. Great essays about all of the poems, but only the full poem of Gawain and the Green Knight is included. I had hoped all the poems were there as he says in the essays he translated all of them. Sadly the other poems translations are not on Kindle. Maybe one day, as I would love to read the other poems in a modern English version.

About the Author

Carolyn Callahan (PhD University of Connecticut) is Commonwealth Professor of Education at the University of Virginia. She has been a principal investigator on projects of the National Research Center on the Gifted and Talented for the past 19 years. She has published more than 180 refereed articles and 50 book chapters across a broad range of topics on gifted education. She is a Past-President of The Association for the Gifted and the National Association for Gifted Children. She is currently Editor of Gifted Child Quarterly.

Holly Hertberg Davis (PhD University of Virginia) is an educational consultant specializing in differentiation of instruction, advanced curriculum, and professional development. She is a former faculty member at the University of Virginia's Curry School of Education, where she taught courses in the education of the gifted and was a principal investigator for the National Research Center on the Gifted and Talented. She has written and presented extensively on her primary research interests: differentiation of instruction, staff development, and equity in Advanced Placement and International Baccalaureate courses.

I am an AIG teacher and have been reading this book to support our system's work with rewriting our gifted plan/procedures. It is a great reference tool packed with research about gifted learners. I'm sure I will continue to use it a lot in the coming years!
