"A helpful, user friendly introduction for quantitative data analysis using SPSS designed for students in both psychology and sociology fields." - Andrada Ivanescu, East Carolina University, US, in The American Statistician

"Alan Bryman and Duncan Cramer take the reader on a journey through their first steps in using SPSS and data entry, through to how to decide which statistical technique is the most appropriate for their research and how to interpret each aspect of their analyses. This book is one of the most comprehensive and accessible books available on the market." - Professor Dominic Upton, Head of Psychology, University of Worcester, UK

"Bryman and Cramer’s Quantitative Data Analysis has long been one of the best texts in the field. Crucially, it explains why something is done, as well as how. Most importantly, it does it without recourse to daunting formulae and calculations. It takes students from the beginnings of data analysis, assuming no knowledge of either statistics or SPSS, and by the end of it a student can be an accomplished analyst." - Malcolm Williams, Director, Cardiff University. Very Basic
By Serge J.F. Van Doren
This book provides a good, but very, very basic introduction to the software. Completely elementary. It just describes how the input and very basic analysis is done. If you are not a statistician and you need more explanations this book is not what you want. I would almost say it is not useful if you really want to use SPSS. Sorry but that's my honest opinion.

Deeply Rooted: Unconventional Farmers in the Age of Agribusiness, by Lisa M. Hamilton

A century of industrialization has left our food system riddled with problems, yet for solutions we look to nutritionists and government agencies, scientists and chefs. Lisa M. Hamilton asks: Why not look to the people who grow our food?

Hamilton makes this vital inquiry through the stories of three unconventional farmers: an African-American dairyman in Texas who plays David to the Goliath of agribusiness corporations; a tenth-generation rancher in New Mexico struggling to restore agriculture as a pillar of his crumbling community; and a modern pioneer family in North Dakota who is breeding new varieties of plants to face the future’s double threat: Monsanto and global warming. Threads of history and discussion weave through the tales, exploring how farmers have been pushed to the margins of agriculture and transformed from leaders to laborers.

These unusual characters and their surprising stories make the case that in order to correct what has gone wrong with the food system, we must first bring farmers back to the table.

From Publishers Weekly
Journalist and photographer Hamilton presents a multicultural snapshot of the American sustainable agriculture movement, profiling a Texas dairyman, a New Mexican rancher and a North Dakotan farmer, all who have converted from conventional to sustainable agriculture for economic and personal reasons. Harry Lewis, born to a family of former slaves who began farming in a Texas freedom colony, switched to organic farming to avoid price-gouging by agribusiness but also to support his core philosophical tenets. Virgil Trujillo, whose Native Americans ancestors were the first settlers of Abiquiu, N.Mex., practices holistic resource management at a dude ranch/retreat center. David Podoll set out to prove organic agriculture wrong, but instead was converted; he and his brother now buck the North Dakotan trend of farm consolidation and corn, soybean and wheat monoculture by focusing on the family garden and breeding plants for diversity, beauty and strength. The book vividly shows how these stubborn individualists rooted in the soil struggle are forging a path away from monolithic agribusiness to sustainable agriculture for its promise of spiritual integrity, community and food security. From Booklist
Agriculture is journalist and photographer Hamilton’s beat, and alternatives to environmentally and economically detrimental agribusiness have become her passion. Accordingly, she profiles farmers and ranchers who believe that “agriculture is not an industry” but, rather, “a fundamental act that determines whether we as a society will live or die.” East Texas dairyman Harry Lewis’ commitment to keeping his organic dairy operation small and in the family stems from his forebears’ role in the freedom colonies founded by former slaves. Virgil Trujillo’s family has owned land and cattle in what is now Abiqui, New Mexico, for 10 generations, and he believes that small ranches managed with an eye to the “health of the land” are the key to ending the area’s bone-deep poverty. The Podoll family in North Dakota rejects “brute-force agriculture” in favor of “enduring” practices, certain that the knowledge and skills of hands-on farmers are essential to coping with climate change. Hamilton’s in-depth portraits of independent farmers offer invaluable perspectives on American agriculture, past and present, while offering hope for a life-sustaining future. --Donna Seaman

Much praise
By snowy owl books
From the first pages of the introduction in North Dakota I know I have hit the exact source of a deeply wounded beauty belonging to traditional agriculture and the author who will stitch it together for us and give us the voice that often gets stuck in our own throat and is not easily pieced together from broken up memory. These chapters immediately make us familiar to the survivors, and all of the history we need to make sense of them. How does a 1950s style dairy farmer live on his principles that stem from a traditional land consciousness? How does a New Mexican stockman navigate ancestral lands where two distinct systems of old and new world property ownership have clashed and left him some impossible dream? In a sea of bio engineered and chemically dependent conventional crop fields, how does one North Dakota farmer feed his family using only natural methods?

It is not by a matter of methods that these men survive, though the methods are important, it is their convictions and their character that lead them to independence. Harry Lewis understands that prosperity isn't something you create, prosperity is the form of our green earth; and true prosperity is received through shepherding our earth. Virgil Trujillo understands that "fitness" is "survival of the fittest" as he adapts to the cultural, political and economic forces that gash his land and his history. David Podoll has a deep spiritual sense of what is right and what is wrong, he knows that tilling massive acres of earth is a wasteful proposition if done in the conventional manner of which maximization for profit is the only god.

It's also a perfect travel narrative, with a painted scenic view and a conversational style that offers absorption into the mindset and the reality of remarkable individuals. It is details that quicken the heartbeat, like the art of Georgia O'Keefe's sun bleached bones and mountains of Abiquiu, New Mexico where a surviving ejido (a form of community land ownership granted by the Spanish Crown in the 18th century) still exists in a tenuous position of holding off the government Forest Service and paying taxes. It is preparing cattle for winter rangelands and weighing in the stock, and dealing with the holier than thou environmentalists that drip in the gates to "save" the land. - Take for example the cattle in the scrubby desert, we have too often heard that cattle rampage all the vegetation and create desiccation, but as Virgil Trujillo has proven, grazing cattle in imitation of the bison using a rotational manner, may actually improve the conditions for scrub growth rather than harm them permanently. To know the land you have to be there working it.

Perhaps the best vibes from this book is that we should all want to crave being as adventurous in our work and unstoppable for the truth as the embracing Lisa Hamilton has been introducing us to these unique men and women who live honorably. If we can't drive out to North Dakota, we can certainly do a little searching in our own hometowns. I may look no further than the nearest pumpkin patch run by the last farmer in the township, or the old cider mill that has pressed for nearly 140 years.

As a side bar here that is personally relevant to me - I thank the author for the small-minded quote taken from the Chairman of the House Agricultural Committee -Collin Peterson (D-Minnesota) - This quote exposes the extent of his wisdom.
Sadly, Monsanto pays him for those kinds of opinions.

Traveling the middle of the country with a great writer
By Paul Dooney
I tore through this book in just a couple days, and when I was done I only wanted more. I've been watching Lisa Hamilton's writing and photography in Orion and her book is even better: great characters brought to life before my eyes. What a treat. We can only hope that this is the first in a long line of books from her, and that she keeps going to places we don't usually go and bringing back characters like these farmers. Highly recommended, if you care about food, or farming, or just good stories from the heart of America.

Bonus: you can see some photos of the farmers in the book on her website, something I wish more non-fiction authors would do.

My only beef, small as it may be, is that the people at my local bookstore in LA didn't know about this book. Is Counterpoint hard to track down? I bought a second copy as a gift through Amazon, but I can't decide who to give it to.

Asking the hard questions about food
By Arthur Sido
I finished Lisa Hamilton's Deeply Rooted last night. It was a thought-provoking work. Ms. Hamilton singled out three unconventional farmers, farmers who bucked the trend of constantly increasing the size of their operation and spent quite a bit of time watching what they do and more importantly finding out why they do what they do. All three buck conventional wisdom and while they might not make as much money as the huge commercial farms they still retain their connection to the land and their community, something Ms. Hamilton argues and I largely agree has taken place in most of the agribusiness world.

I think Ms. Hamilton does a great job painting the picture of each of these farms for the reader. Her vivid imagery is sometimes raw but life on a farm is not all setting suns and green pastures. Life on a farm is dirty sometimes, sometimes ugly and unpleasant. When you eschew the methods of modern agribusiness, it can make life even harder. In a country where meat and milk come from the grocery store in sanitary foam packages and plastic jugs, Deeply Rooted is a welcome reminder of just how much has changed in the world of food.

The three farmers she selected are kind of characters, each with a pretty interesting personality. I am sure that is intentional, after all the book needs to be readable as well as educational. I don't think these three are typical of non-confirming farms but they do provide a great insight into the mindset of people who were raised to be farmers and ranchers but decided against getting on the economy of scale treadmill. It is one thing to woodenly detail the operations of a farm, which is only mildly interesting. Getting into the minds of these farmers is where the really interesting stuff happens.

It is indisputable that the agricultural world has changed dramatically over the last century and the pace of change shows no sign of letting up. Ms. Hamilton does a very good job of telling us about the downside of this revolution, farmers becoming producers, people disconnected from the land and from where their food comes from. On the other hand, feeding your family has become, at least for the majority of people in Western nations, something of an afterthought. I can get up from my computer and get to four grocery stores in less than ten minutes, each one chock full staple foods, dairy products and fruits and vegetables. The food is consistent, predictable and cheap. How healthy it is, well that is a different story but the market delivers what people demand. I am confident in saying that short of a major crisis, we are never going back to a world of gardens and small farms, of local produce. Perhaps Deeply Rooted will serve as an encouragement to others, as it has been for me, to think more about food and the choices we make. Food, water and shelter are the essentials of life and we really only pay attention to one of those. As bad as the mortgage crisis was, a food or water crisis is infinitely worse. Deeply Rooted is, pun intended, food for thought.

Fatal Journey: The Final Expedition of Henry Hudson, by Peter C. Mancall

The English explorer Henry Hudson devoted his life to the search for a water route through America, becoming the first European to navigate the Hudson River in the process. In Fatal Journey, acclaimed historian and biographer Peter C. Mancall narrates Hudson’s final expedition.

In the winter of 1610, after navigating dangerous fields of icebergs near the northern tip of Labrador, Hudson’s small ship became trapped in winter ice. Provisions grew scarce and tensions mounted amongst the crew. Within months, the men mutinied, forcing Hudson, his teenage son, and seven other men into a skiff, which they left floating in the Hudson Bay.

A story of exploration, desperation, and icebound tragedy, Fatal Journey vividly chronicles the undoing of the great explorer, not by an angry ocean, but at the hands of his own men.

From Publishers Weekly
In April 1610, Henry Hudson set sail on the Discovery with a crew of 22 (including his 17-year-old son) on his fourth expedition in search of a shorter route to the Far East. USC historian Mancall (Hakluyt's Promise) vividly recreates the eager anticipation of the voyage, the lust for conquest and for spices, the voyage's risks and the joy and terrors that Hudson and his crew faced. But as winter approached, rather than return to England, Hudson set anchor in the bay named for him. Stuck in ice for seven months, their provisions dwindling, the crew mutinied in the spring, forcing Hudson, his son and seven other sailors into a skiff left floating in the bay. When the mariners on the Discovery returned to England without Hudson, they were tried for murder but never convicted. As for Hudson and the rest, their remains were never found and their fate is the stuff of legend. As Mancall so eloquently points out, the resolute will that had served Hudson so well in reaching this summit of exploration also made him unwilling to abandon his goal and led to his demise. “Mancall’s account of the doomed voyage is exciting, tense, and tragic…. This is an excellent re-examination of [Hudson] and his final, sad effort.”

Minneapolis Star Tribune
“[Mancall’s] facility with primary sources is astounding. The story of Hudson’s last voyage becomes, in his experienced hands, a lucid, fascinating lens into early Atlantic explorations. The book bristles with action, details about ship life, insight into British laws (the mutineers were found not guilty), and jaw-dropping accounts of encounters with Americans.”

Seattle Times
“This is a story that stretches the imagination and leaves the reader with a shiver.”

Las Cruces Sun-News
“Mancall [is] a master storyteller and historian…. Any reader of Dr. Mancall’s account will be caught in an exciting adventure and overwhelming tragedy.”

Washington Times
“Mr. Mancall writes with authority in tone and scholarship.”

New York Post
“Rather than speculate, Mancall delivers the story of how Hudson’s crusade put him on a collision course with his men…. But the story is perhaps most compelling in its descriptions of the Northern territory itself.”

Washington Post
“[Fatal Journey] recounts the puzzling episode of a captain overthrown by an enraged faction of his own crew…. [A] short and dependable guide to what befell a great but flawed explorer.”

Newark Star-Ledger
“For fans of Mutiny on the Bounty and The Caine Mutiny, Fatal Journey will only add to the store and lore of desperate actions on the high seas…. [Mancall] combines forensic history with pulsing narrative to achieve a highly credible account of how the mission unraveled.”

Boston Globe
“Bracingly told.”

Boston Globe
“Fatal Journey is a rich, exhilarating narrative of exploration, desperation, and ice-bound tragedy.”

History Magazine
“Mancall places Hudson and the mutiny in the context of their age, a time when economic and cultural forces lured explorers and sailors into the dangers of a new world in search of profit and fame.”

Arctic, Antarctic, and Alpine Research
“Mancall, in this fascinating account based on a great deal of research, provides a reasonable explanation of Hudson’s likely fate, after probably surviving for a polar winter or two…. I recommended this excellent book to both armchair explorers and serious students of the history of the Arctic.”

The Working Waterfront
“Fatal Journey is both poignant and tragic. Henry Hudson is presented as a dominating, unyielding captain, consumed with an Ahab-like obsession to seek a northern passage.”

About the Author
Peter C. Mancall is Professor of History and Anthropology, University of Southern California, and director of the USC-Huntington Early Modern Studies Institute. He is the author of Hakluyt's Promise and At the Edge of Empire. He lives in Los Angeles.

Disappointing. Lacking good narrative and light on facts
By C. Pierce
I picked up the book from my library after seeing a mention of it on Glenn Reynolds blog and was fairly disappointed in it.

The structure of the book follows Hudson on four journeys: Two due north, one to the Hudson River area of the Atlantic coast, and then his journey to Hudson Bay ending in James Bay. After the mutiny, the book concludes with the trials of the mutineers.

The author doesn't seem to have enough source material to write an entire book on Hudson's journeys. Hudson's early life is fairly anonymous, the circumstances surrounding his death are completely unknown. Against these book-ends, there's only sketchy narrative pieced together from ship logs and from journals very few of which are his own. If this were a book about mutiny on 17th century English ships or northwest passage exploration, Hudson's tale would make an interesting chapter or three.

Next, get yourself a good map of the Hudson Bay, Hudson River and the Arctic Circle before even cracking the book open.

My copy of the book didn't have any kind of useful map other reviewers have mentioned (I wonder if this was an insert in later printings). Without it, the book is confusing and requires constant trips to an atlas to find out what the author is talking about. The maps included in the text are worthless for following the narrative: illegibly small, blurry, and of course dated. Islands and channels are named, but modern names for these places often aren't given alongside. The players in this story were confused about distance and heading, and the author's descriptive style doesn't clear that up for the modern reader either.

Speaking of narrative: Mancall is not a storyteller. He bounces around through the story unevenly, giving away later events that aren't so well known under a guise of foreshadowing. There was undoubtedly a great deal of tension on the ship before Hudson was marooned, but it fails to come through the pages. Twice he drags us through the examination of the mutineers, repeating the same facts but without any drama. He makes it clear that the treatment of mutineers changes between the first and second examinations, but doesn't give much a sense of why that makes the second one necessary or important.

One more nit. The author's previous book was about Richard Hakluyt. Throughout this book, the name is dropped over and over again but without a clear connection of what it has to do with this story. I can understand wanting to re-use your research, or pitching your other book, but please tie it all together. To give you a sense of this sillyness, I recall one passage similar to "Hakluyt may have have written about this".

This book needed a cruel editor.

There probably are better books about Hudson, and there are most certainly better books about English exploration of the Northwest Passage and the New World in the early 17th century. Seek them out.

A man lost to history
By Janlynn
Henry Hudson is a man mostly forgotten by the history books. People know his Bay and his River, but how many know the man himself disappeared during one of his voyages to find the Northwest Passage. The search for the Passage has sparked many mysteries, the foremost being John Franklin. Almost two hundred years before Franklin, Hudson sought the Passage.

This account of what happened to Hudson is an interesting look into the world of sailing in the early 1600s. At times the book moves slowly, in fact, I skipped a chapter which didn't seem to make much of a difference to the story. It's hard to write an entire book, I imagine, about a man who is most famous for his death and disappearence and about which almost nothing else is known.

Tragedy of Henry Hudson
By Thomas F. Ogle
Basically, the book is a credible account of the efforts to find a Northwest Passage in the early to mid-seventeenth century. Mancall does a good job in establishing the economic importance of finding an Arctic route to the Spice Islands. Mancall's research of journals and accounts appears to be exhaustive, but unfortunately the book is a rather dry read. The author may be excused for lack of drama in some respects since the Hudson's journals and those from his associates apparently were rather cursory--unlike Pigafetta's. Even so, the story could be much more compelling had the author visited Hudson Bay or had first hand knowledge of working a sailing vessel in Arctic waters. Much more vivid are the works of Samuel Eliot Morison and Dallas Murphy because they sailed the routes of the voyages they write about.

The two page map of Hudson's voyages (1607-1611) is very welcome and an essential part to understanding the narrative--particularly the inset map of Hudson Bay. The reproductions of early maps, paintings/drawings from other expeditions scattered throughout the book are generally too small and dark to be useful. The large map itself has mislabeled the Provinces of Quebec, Ontario and Manitoba. Also, Davis Strait should have been noted as well as the degrees latitude.

Shreveport, Louisiana, 1981.

Mae Fischer flicked on her bedside lamp and shook her husband's shoulder, the pressure urgent.

Ben's eyes flipped open, instantly alert. "She's sleepwalking again."

"And talking."

"Damn." He thrust out of bed in time to see his seven-year-old daughter, Sara, dressed in pink flannel pajamas, her long, dark braid trailing down her spine, drift past his bedroom door. He walked out onto the landing as she came to a halt alongside the landing rail, staring fixedly at something only she could see.

Since the phenomenon had started several months ago, they had blocked off the stairs with the wooden gate they had used for her when she was tiny. There was no danger of her falling down the stairs, but he lived in fear that she would either climb the gate or fall over the landing rail. The drop to the hardwood floor below was a good twelve feet. At the very least, she would break bones.

She unlocked an invisible door, stepped "inside" and knelt down. He watched, resisting the urge to shake her awake or simply scoop her up and carry her back to bed.

Their family doctor had warned them against waking her suddenly. Apparently the shock could be dangerous. A specialist, Dr. Dolinski, had seconded the opinion. Ben wasn't certain what dangerous meant, exactly, but he had assumed Dolinski was talking about physical shock, maybe even a seizure of some kind.

Mae seemed to have even less understanding of her daughter's condition than Ben did. At times, she was actively frightened by Sara's episodes which was why, confused as he was by what was happening to his daughter, he had taken over dealing with the situation.

Soft lamplight poured from the bedroom as he crouched down beside her. The blank expression on her face and the intensity of her gaze sent a shaft of fear through him. "Sara, honey, you can wake up now. It's only a dream."

Talk softly, and keep talking. Bring her back slow, that had been Dolinski's advice. Don't do anything that might jolt her out of that state.

His heart squeezed tight as he watched her repeat actions he had seen her do a number of times. Her movements were smooth and precise as she reached into some invisible cupboard, pulled out an invisible book and leafed through to a page. When she was finished, she replaced the book, locked the cabinet, pushed to her feet, walked a few steps, then appeared to close another door and lock it. She placed the "keys" she had used on what he had decided was an imaginary shelf, a part of the landscape she had created on the landing that must be, to her, as solid and real as the walls and rooms of this house.

She paused and stared in the direction of her room, a sharp, adult expression on her face. For a split second he had the unnerving impression that he was looking at someone else, not his daughter. The notion made him go cold inside as she drifted back in the direction of her room.

But crazy as her actions seemed, he didn't think Sara was suffering from a personality disorder. He recognized what she was doing, and she repeated the same actions over and over again.

His theory, developed over months of observation, was even crazier than Dolinski's. To most people—civilians—what was happening to Sara was simply weird, but to Ben, an ex-Naval officer, the actions formed a familiar pattern. Sara's symptoms pointed to a particular diagnosis that shouldn't have affected a seven-year-old child.

His father had suffered battle fatigue after the Second World War, and Ben himself had seen and heard about enough cases firsthand. For the past few months he had done extensive research on the effects of posttraumatic stress syndrome. He had talked to old soldiers and visited veteran's hospitals. It wasn't unusual for soldiers to relive battles in their dreams, night after night, going over and over the same incident, as if the scene had been burned so deeply into their minds that they couldn't forget or move past it.

He'd had his own share of posttraumatic stress syndrome after the Gulf War. Sleepwalking was rare, but there were documented cases.

He shadowed Sara as she made an invisible turn, his attention sharpening. This was something new.

He watched as she shrugged into an invisible coat and wound what seemed to be a scarf around her throat. Her head came up and the remote expression on her face turned to terror.

"Rouge."

He frowned. "Sara?"

She looked directly at him, her gaze once more sharply adult, but he had the distinct impression that she didn't register him; she was looking at another face.

She spoke clearly and precisely. The content and the language she used—German—chilled him. A name registered: Stein.

He watched as she unwound the invisible scarf. "Who is Stein?"

Her face went blank, and for a moment he thought she wasn't going to answer. The technique of trying to enter into the dream, to defuse the grip it held on his daughter, had so far proved spectacularly unsuccessful. It seemed that when she dreamed she was literally locked into another world and, short of physically intervening by shaking her awake, he couldn't reach her.

She fixed him with an eerie gaze. "Stein?" she said in a coldly accented voice that shook him to the core. "Geheime Staats Polizei."

All the fine hairs at the back of his neck lifted. Sara was his daughter; he loved her fiercely, and yet, in that moment she was not, by any stretch of the imagination, his cute, lovable little girl.

"Stein's dead," he said softly. "You don't have to worry about him anymore. The war's over. We won."

He kept talking, relating what his own father had told him about the Second World War, emphasizing several times that the Allies had won. It had hurt, it still hurt, but they were okay now. They would never let the mistakes that had led to the horror of the Second World War be repeated.

He didn't know if what he was saying was penetrating the world she was locked into, or if he was making any sense, because talking to Sara as if she had actually been there didn't make any kind of sense. But if even a fragment got through, it could help.

She blinked, and the terrible tension left her face. She stared at him, the dream Sara abruptly there, with him, her gaze incisive. For the first time, he had the impression that he was finally making headway, even if this uncanny "grownup" Sara still shook him.

Dolinski had mentioned the possibility of multiple personalities, but Ben had never been prepared to believe that. His daughter was tall for her age, already strong willed and with a sharp intelligence. Today, she had spent most of the afternoon down at the swimming hole with her cousin, Steve, and the Bayard kid who had moved in next door. Sara had been calling the shots, and that was typical. She had a natural knack for organization and command. To him, the "sleep" personality was recognizably Sara.

"Did you hear what she said?"

"Not now, Mae," Ben said calmly, his gaze still locked on Sara's, but the high pitch of Mae's voice had shattered the fragile bridge he'd built. He had been so close—

Sara blinked at him, in an instant shifting from eerily self-possessed to sleepy and bewildered. "Did I walk again?"

The fear in her eyes tugged at his heart. He scooped her up, walked to her room and placed her in her bed. "Just a little, but it's okay. I got you, honey. It's over now."

Sara's gaze clung to his as he tucked her in, taking her through the comforting bedtime routine, even though it was after midnight. He didn't know how much of the experiences she retained. Before tonight he would have said none, but now he wasn't so sure. Something had changed in that moment he had made contact with her inner world. He had thought about the contact as a bridge. If that was the case, then he had finally made a start at crossing it and maybe neutralizing whatever it was that was upsetting her.

"What's Geheime Staa—" She frowned. "I said that, didn't I? When I was sleepwalking."

"It doesn't matter, honey. It was just a dream." He gripped her hand and gently squeezed it. "This is what matters, this is real."

But he was beginning to think they had a bigger problem than Dolinski had outlined in his reports. He was no longer certain the therapy sessions were helping. Building a bridge to the core of the stress that created the behavior was all very well, but he would prefer that Sara forgot whatever it was that was upsetting her.

Ben sat on the edge of the bed, keeping a watch on his daughter to make sure it was over. Within minutes her eyelids drooped and she sank into an exhausted sleep.

Mae had gone back to bed. He should follow her, but even if he climbed between the sheets, he didn't know if he could sleep.

Sara was a highly intelligent, creative child. After extensive physical and mental testing, Dolinski was convinced she was suffering from some kind of mental stress that had been brought on by an event that had made a shocking and indelible impression. Perhaps a graphic scene witnessed on television at a time when she was feeling especially vulnerable, or even in real life. Unable to cope with what she had seen, her mind had sublimated the event and the sleepwalking occurred when fragments kept surfacing in dreams.

According to Dolinski, dreams were a "safe" level to process unpalatable information, or create an acceptable context for an event, so the mind could absorb the information and move on. In his opinion, as upsetting as Sara's symptoms were, they would fade with time. Young children were mentally tougher than most people gave them credit for—they bounced back when adults crumbled. He could see no reason why Sara should be the exception to the rule.

Ben had been happy to go along with Dolinski's optimism. His explanations had seemed logical and scientific, and they had been backed by several impressive diplomas on his office wall. Now he was forced to revise that opinion.

He was no authority on mental disorders—or, for that matter, psychic phenomena. But over the past few months, he had read exhaustively on both subjects. As difficult to understand as many of the mental conditi...

A well written and enjoyable tale
By Harriet Klausner
Librarian Sara Fischer is cleaning out her late father Ben's home in Shreveport following his recent death when she comes across a WWII Nazi codebook. That in of itself would be strange, but looking at it makes Sara have a sense of déjà vu; the codebook enigmatically reminds Sara of terrifying nightmares she suffered from as a child.

Sara asks her long time friend Marc Bayard for his help. The Assistant Director of Special projects at National Intelligence visits Sara, but his presence seems to have brought a nasty side effect, the dreams of her youth return. For some uncanny reason that she cannot grasp, thirty something Sara believes she and Marc worked together in 1943 as part of the French Resistance. However, neither she nor her protector realizes the value of the codebook to an unknown adversary whose price for ownership is to kill Marc and Sara as secrets must remain concealed.

The latest romantic suspense thriller by this author (see DOUBLE VISION and KILLER FOCUS) has the usual brand of non-stop action expected from this writer, but also contains a major unique element involving reincarnation. The story line is fast-paced from the moment that Sara finds the codebook and never slows down as an unknown enemy will kill her and marc to possess the book. Although Marc is skeptical about Sara's theory (as will many readers), everyone will agree that Fiona Brand provides her audience with a strong exciting thriller as what happened in 1943 France seems to be repeating itself in 2008 United States.

Lot of interesting things in this one. California has a lot of story, in and of itself. Was just a tad put off at some poor edits and bad facts...

Can't get enough
By Jeff & Wendy S
I love all the Uncle John's series and have a whole bookshelf full of them. The Hollywood, TV, and History books are my favorites, with the California book being a close second. Very entertaining. If you've read any of these books, no further explanation is needed. If you haven't - they give you hundreds of pages a entertaining stories, usually ranging from 1 page to 4 pages in length. There are no pictures, but that does not detract from the fun, quick articles.

History of the Mafia, by Salvatore Lupo

When we think of the Italian Mafia, we think of Marlon Brando, Tony Soprano, and the Corleones& mdash;iconic actors and characters who give shady dealings a mythical pop presence. Yet these sensational depictions take us only so far. The true story of the Mafia reveals both an organization and mindset dedicated to the preservation of tradition. It is no accident that the rise of the Mafia coincided with the unification of Italy and the influx of immigrants into America. The Mafia means more than a horse head under the sheets& mdash;it functions as an alternative to the state, providing its own social and political justice.

Combining a nuanced history with a unique counternarrative concerning stereotypes of the immigrant, Salvatore Lupo, a leading historian of modern Italy and a major authority on its criminal history, has written the definitive account of the Sicilian Mafia from 1860 to the present. Consulting rare archival sources, he traces the web of associations, both illicit and legitimate, that have defined Cosa Nostra during its various incarnations. He focuses on several crucial periods of transition: the Italian unification of 1860 to 1861, the murder of noted politician Notarbartolo, fascist repression of the Mafia, the Allied invasion of 1943, social conflicts after each world war, and the major murders and trials of the 1980s.

Lupo identifies the internal cultural codes that define the Mafia and places these codes within the context of social groups and communities. He also challenges the belief that the Mafia has grown more ruthless in recent decades. Rather than representing a shift from "honorable" crime to immoral drug trafficking and violence, Lupo argues the terroristic activities of the modern Mafia signify a new desire for visibility and a distinct break from the state. Where these pursuits will take the family adds a fascinating coda to Lupo's work.

From Publishers Weekly
A dark thread of crime and corruption weaves insidiously through the fabric of Sicilian society in this intricate historical study. Historian Lupo focuses on the Italian branch of the Mafia, following it from its roots in Italy's 19th-century wars of unification to the anti-Mafia maxi-trial of the 1980s and 1990s, and tracing its infiltration of citrus-growing, construction and other sectors of the economy. He rejects the idea of the organization as a holdover from a traditional Sicilian peasant culture with a socially benign ethos of solidarity and honor as a self-serving Mafia mythology. Instead, he argues, mafiosi run a thoroughly modern, prosaic, protection racket, fomenting crime and then posing as intermediaries who can suppress it, seeking protection and wielding influence in the highest economic and political circles, eager to abrogate omertá and cooperate with the police when it suits their interests. Lupo's rather dense academic treatment of the subject presupposes a good knowledge of Sicilian history as it proceeds through highly detailed but too loosely organized accounts of specific mafioso life histories, police initiatives and major trials, in which one often loses sight of the forest amid the trees. There are stimulating insights, but the book is almost as byzantine as the Mafia intrigues it appraises. (Aug.)

From The New Yorker
For anyone who has grown weary of the fond treatment of the Mafia in American popular culture this book is a tonic. Lupo’s myth-busting history explores why the Mafia survived despite Fascist repression, the “maxi-trial” in Palermo in the nineteen-eighties, and frequent predictions that it would disappear as Italy modernized. While Lupo’s focus is on Sicily, he also sketches the development of the Mafia’s stateside branches, occasioning the fascinating reminder that the crime network’s first American port of call was not New York or New Jersey but New Orleans. Fun is not a priority here, and Lupo often gives only cursory mention of pivotal episodes that might be common knowledge to Italian readers, but his unfailingly fastidious handling of such a slippery subject has its own satisfactions.

Review

What Salvatore Lupo captures particularly well, against all the stereotypes, is the Mafioso as a modern character: the pure distillate of entrepreneurial and criminal intelligence that illuminates the history of both Italy and contemporary Europe. If we can truly break ourselves of the habit of thinking of the Mafia as a belated survival of Sicilian feudalism and the product of underdevelopment, we will have taken a major step forward, and perhaps even be on the road toward a solution.

(Roberto Saviano, author of Gomorrah: A Personal Journey into the Violent International Empire of Naples' Organized Crime System)

History of the Mafia is a tour de force bringing Salvatore Lupo's virtually unequaled expertise about the Mafia, Sicilian history, and Italian politics into play. The book is essential reading for anyone who hopes to be well informed about the Mafia.

(Nelson Moe, Columbia University, and author of The View from Vesuvius: Italian Culture and the Southern Question)

For anyone who has grown weary of the fond treatment of the Mafia in American popular culture this book is a tonic.

(The New Yorker)

This is not a book of dramatic shoot-outs or even one that lingers long on individual characters. It is a sober assessment of the history of a movement.

(Hugh MacDonald Scotland Sunday Herald)

With Lupo's History, you become a lot more knowledgeable about the phenomenon.

(Lee Lamothe Toronto Globe & Mail)

[Lupo] provides a useful spectrum of first-hand historic sources.

(Guy Dinmore Financial Times)

Lupo carefully indicates and assesses the many ways in which the mafia has been understood...Recommended

(Choice)

Well-researched... compellingly argued book,

(Richard Drake H-Italy)

Lupo… is the preeminent scholar of the nineteenth- and twentieth- century Sicilian Mafia whose research is widely respected for its theoretical analysis thoroughly grounded in original archival sources…but newcomers to the field will nonetheless treasure his brilliant introduction.

History of the Mafia
By Mr. R. Linkiewicz
If you are looking for a sensational, titillating account of Mafia activities, full of gore and sleazy details, then avoid this book completely. It is a very scholarly and rational examination of the Mafia's origins and its development into a multinational corporate entity. Those who think of the Mafia as some kind of criminal relic of Sicilian feudalism are likely to have their preconceptions shattered as this book calmly and methodically delineates the interconnections between the Mafia, the Italian Capitalist Establishment and the Italian governing classes. A most fascinating read!

Sociological History for Academic Specialists
By David
A professor of contemporary Italian history at the University of Palermo, Salvatore Lupo wrote "La Storia della Mafia" for other specialists in Italian history and sociology. "The History of the Mafia," translated by Anthony Shugaar, carries over from the original the assumption that the reader shares the author's depth of knowledge of of 19th and 20th century Sicilian politics and sociology. The legibility of Lupo's narrative of incidents suffers from jumping backwards and forwards in chronology to make excursions to related topics before returning to the subject at hand. It is also unfortunate that Lupo wrote the book in dense academic Italian, a dialect that can mystify even educated Italians. An example, as translated:

"If we accept the notion that the depiction of southern Italian anthropology offered here is credible, we should then attempt to distinguish the phenomenon from its context by investigating the way the Mafia organization appropriates cultural codes, instrumentalizes them, modifies them, and turns them into an adhesive to ensure that they remain intact." (p. 11)

So, we should distinguish the Mafia from Sicilian culture by looking at how the Mafia turns cultural codes into an adhesive that holds cultural codes intact? That sludge doesn't make sense as a metaphor, but it is all too characteristic of Lupo's prose. Lupo heightens the effect by extensive quotations from Italian Government reports that add a bureaucratic tone to the work.

Now for the strong points. The book would be an excellent starting point for researching the history of the Italian mafia. It provides outstanding sourcing (36 pages of notes for 275 pages of prose) and a good index. Columbia University Press deserves commendation for producing a physically attractive volume, with particularly legible typeface. In sum, "History of the Mafia" is a better research aid than a narrative history.

Just OK
By Christopher Curatolo
This book is just OK. It is more of a sociological study than a history. This book is more of a supplement to other history books. Read the others first. Then, if you want to know more of the sociological aspects of this topic, you can read this book. I was hoping that it would have additional information on some of the key moments in Cosa Nostra's history, other than those that are already known. In that respect, it was a big disappointment. It did give me a better view as to how the events tranpired. It also is a hard read. Be prepared to think. Be prepared to look for more information.
