The Cobra Civil War and GI Joe's high water mark

This volume covers issues 71-80 of the Marvel GI Joe series (mostly from 1988). It includes the entire Cobra Civil War story (Cobra Commander vs Serpantor vs Destro vs the GI Joe team), the aftermath where the Joes are betrayed by their own government and several entertaining one-issue stories. The only things missing are the maps of Cobra Island showing the battlelines but the story is easy enough to follow without them.

While the two prior volumes had serious production issues with bad scans and misspelled words this one was fairly high quality. The art was a little flatter than I would like, I think some detail was lost in the reproduction, but it looks fine. I see another reviewer had a peeling cover but mine is holding up, it may have been an isolated problem.

The book has everything you'd expect from Larry Hama's classic GI Joe run. There's military jargon, blazing battles, betrayal, historical references and humor. The art, mainly by Ron Wagner and Marshall Rogers, is some of the best we would see in the Marvel series. There are some minor art issues, at the time GI Joe was so popular it was running biweekly with the artists trading off each issue. So you get things like Hawk taking time out of a fight to change uniforms between issues. It's irking but not too terrible given the deadlines they had.

So, if you like GI Joe, this is a fantastic book to pick up.

If I Am Empty, God Is Obliged to Fill Me

This is probably the most recommendable book of Eckhart's writings on the market, and the best introduction for anyone who has heard the name and is curious to learn more. The translations are lively and accurate, the contents have been selected from Eckhart's sermons, tractates and short sayings, in which he was addressing ordinary people. Eckhart was one of those rare individuals who combine the soul of a saint and the mind of a theologian with the verbal gifts of a poet, so he has a head start when it comes to the perennial problem of expressing the Inexpressible.

In a way the essence of Eckhart lies in his Latin theological writings, where he interprets the Christian Mysteries through the ideas and vocabulary of Plato and the Neo-Platonists: these show him as one of the greatest thinkers in Western history. (Those interested in this side of him should read C.F. Kelley's "Meister Eckhart on Divine Knowledge", now happily reprinted.)

But what distinguishes Eckhart from most later theologians is that he says the word "God" the way a carpenter says "wood" or a swimmer says "water". He knows what he is talking about. And if his words remind us again and again of Vedanta, Zen or the Sufis, surely this is because those who truly See, See the same thing. Still, it would be wrong to think of him as some kind of eccentric or stray: he is part of a broad tradition of Christian thought that begins with the Gospel of John and survives until the late 17th century. Eckhart speaks the same language as other Mediaeval theologians, though with an accent of his own.

My main criticism of this book is simple: it is too short. Knowing Eckhart's Sermons and the treasures they contain, I can easily imagine this book quadrupled without any loss of interest. So it remains a tantalising sampler, recommended to anyone who has a narrow, stereotyped view of Christianity, and more simply to anyone who wants to get to know the words of one of the greatest spiritual teachers of East or West.

The Ultimate and the Divine Spark

While I had read about Eckhart for years, I was apprehensive about delving deeper into his actual writings. That is why this book is such a pleasant surprise, for the author has "moved a lot of soil" to get at his finest moments. Not only that, but since Eckhart was a mystic in the deepest sense, his meaning is perhaps clearer than that of any other medieval mind, for all true mystics are united by the same common thread connecting them to the same common source all through history. They all transcend history.

Eckhart has that ability to effortlessly transcend the Emanation (unmovable God beyond time and space) and Immanence (God present throughout his creation) question. Indeed he accepts and reconciles both without conflict. There is no surer evidence that he saw all things from a higher plane than this. In his concept of the divine spark in each of us he unites us with the Ultimate- while the rest of creation is influenced by the emanation of the Holy Spirit down through the planes. Only man has this "cosmic wormhole" to connect him directly with the ultimate- the opening of this portal on our side is called "Christ."

As the author points out there are very few teachers that seem equally accessible by both Pope and Dalai Lama. That is because the Meister represents the pinnacle of spiritual connection in the West.

The safe Eckhart

Meister Eckhart ran into trouble with the Church during his and it appears that some of his writings are still under official disfavor. This is a very safe selection of the master's writings, and really wasn't what I was looking for. I would avoid any selection made by a priest, as this one is, and look for something that offers a more representative view of his more difficult and unorthodox preaching.

Uncle John's Political Briefs

I have always liked the Bathroom Reader books. And have always loved reading just about anything political that I can get my hands on. I was expecting to enjoy the book but to my happy surprise there was a lot of stuff in this book that I didn't already know. It's a good book for political junkies or someone mildly interested in politics. It's also got a lot of funny stuff too!

Return of Uncle John

For me the quality of the last several Uncle John books has been very mixed--from abysmal to some new stuff/some re-hashed stuff. At first when I saw that this is one of those smaller, special interest volumes, I was very dubious. (In my opinion these books have usually been printed with a slightly larger font to cover up that they don't have a lot of content). I was pleasantly surprised that this book not only stuck to a regular size font, but also had a lot of new material. There is some material from their earliest book "It's a Conspiracy!" but that was years ago. Overall, a good addition the Uncle John collection.

I bought this book for my husband for Christmas

He enjoyed it. It was not one of his favorite Uncle John's Readers in terms of funny stuff, but he learned a lot about people in politics he had not known. He never hesitated to share the tidbits he's picked up along the way.

If you have a husband that likes to read magazines or short stories in the throne room...you could do a lot worse than buy this book as a gift for Christmas, Birthday or just because.

About the Author

Thank Our Lord Jesus Christ for intolerance, as tolerance of evil has led the world to Satan's rule!

"The enemies of the Bible are enemies of tolerance" says the author. But, whoever pretends tolerance to be a quality or part of religion is, in Our Lord Jesus Christ's words, a hypocrite! Also a cheat and a darn liar! I think Mr. Hutchinson should at least read once the book he recommends: "Brood of vipers, whitened sepulchers, sons of the Devil" are a few of the words of Jesus that have to be used to preach the Bible like Jesus did and expects! What do you think the Devil preaches, if not tolerance? Where would the abortionists, gays, treacherous politicians and the destroyers of the law be, except for hiding in the closet, were it not for damnable tolerance? Read Mat 25:31 onwards the Final Judgment to thank Jesus properly for His intolerance in sending all liars to Hell!

Main focus of the book is the Hebrew Bible, and presents traditional defenses afresh

The popular book series by the name "Politically Incorrect Guide" (P.I.G.) is a collection of generally conservative defenses of traditional beliefs largely dismissed today because of their lack of resonance with politically correct values and beliefs.

For this reason, I suppose I shouldn't be surprised by the apologetic (interacting with arguments as opposed to saying "sorry") tone of Robert Hutchinson's, The P.I.G. to the Bible. Yet I am. I'm pleasantly surprised by the sustained apologetic nature of the book. From the outset, Hutchinson launches a counterattack against the atheist crusaders (Richard Dawkins, Christopher Hitchens, Sam Harris et al.) and liberal scholars of today; those who are in the business of disparaging the Bible as barbarous, unreliable, oppressive, suppressive, (insert negative descriptor of your choice here).

Just as most assaults on the Bible today are as old as Christianity (e.g., the Bible endorses slavery, totalitarianism, capital punishment for planting crops side-by-side, etc.), Hutchinson presents afresh the traditional defenses to these assaults.

It should be pointed out that the title to the book has the potential to mislead readers. Although Hutchinson does address the New Testament, the main focus in the book is the Hebrew Bible or what Christians call the Old Testament, given his advanced studies in Hebrew and Judaism. Very little time is spent on alternative Christianities in the New Testament as we're so accustomed to hearing from the likes of Dan Brown, Bart Ehrman et al.

As a conservative Christian, I find this focus on the Old Testament refreshing. Many Christians have ignored the Old Testament for years and have, consequently, fallen prey to the official view of the Old Testament as barbarous and cruel. Hutchinson demonstrates that nothing could be farther from the truth. He argues, in fact, that such things as inalienable human rights for everyone and liberal democracy have as their fountainhead the Hebrew Scriptures.

To Christians in search of answers to some of the toughest questions about the Bible, this book will provide a good many answers and bolster the faith. To those who are persuaded by the likes of Dawkins and Company, much could be learned about the arguments of the "other side."

As with other books in the P.I.G. series, this one is a pleasure to a read.

Clear and Compelling

What a relief to find a well-informed, carefully crafted, sprightly written explanation of the place of religion in ethics, history, and moral action. Impressive statistics and data, convincing reasoning. I started out somewhat skeptical but found myself drawn in as Hutchison built his thesis step by step. So much of current writing, movies, news, political speak assumes that religion is harmful or irrelevant. Hutchison esposes the dangers of that lie with skill and humor and power.

More then a 'DUMMY'

I can generally figure out how to work things. On occasion I need instructions. All the time with new windows versions. About a month ago,bought a new tower, with Windows 8. First look, knew I was in trouble. Immediately came to Amazon to get my 'dummy' book as I have with previous versions of Windows. Thank goodness for the 'quick look, and view pages'. I looked at all of the pages thinking, well this is just the one page that I don't quite get. WRONG! So, found this book. If anything, visual will make more sense. This book fit my needs perfectly. Along with written instructions, it has visual instructions, one by one, on what the topic is. If you need to review it, the book has color code, to help you relocate it or you can go to the index. I LOVE THIS BOOK~!~ I recommend anyone who has a difficult time with understanding computer operating systems, get this book. I totally enjoy Windows 8, and with this book right next to my keyboard, I can do everything Windows 8 was designed to do.

Great little book.

If you are new to windows 8 and don't know how to get started with this new operating system then this is the book for you. This book will not show you how to use window 8 but will teach you like the book says TIPS to get you started since this operating system has a new look and can be frustraiting for some people when they turn on their pc for the first time and find out there is no desktop screen like we are used to in previous versions of windows. Once you learn all these tips you will start loving WINDOWS 8.
