Perfect for reference text for PMHNP

This was required for my course, but has been the ONLY text throughout my schooling that I actually utilize regularly.

I frequently use it as a reference-- it's concise, clearly written, frequently uses citations so you can research further, has lots of charts/graphs/algorithms and looks at special considerations. I haven't started practice yet, but have every intention to shelve this right next to my DSM and Stahl's pharmacology guide due to the substantial importance I place within this text!

The concept is based on a confidence that scientists can predict, theoretically, the largest catch that can be taken from a species’ stock over an indefinite period. And while it was modified in 1996 with passage of the Sustained Fisheries Act, MSY is still at the heart of modern American fisheries management. Indeed, the concept has been widely criticized by scientists for ignoring several key factors in fisheries management and has led to the devastating collapse of many fisheries.
           
Carmel Finley reveals that the fallibility of MSY lies at its very inception—as a tool of government rather than science. The foundational doctrine of the MSY emerged at a time when the US government was using science to promote and transfer Western knowledge and technology, and to ensure that American ships and planes would have free passage through the world’s seas and skies. The crime scene is the Pacific Ocean, and the motive was access to the fish resources that both Japan and the US were exploiting and/or eyeing, especially salmon in Alaska and tuna in the Pacific, the latter also requiring small bait fishes from coastal waters in Central America. The victim was good faith—the use of argument based on scientific evidence to articulate legitimate positions. The villain is US foreign policy, specifically its fisheries branch . . . Bad Science, Bad Policy...

Carmel Finley's 2011 "All the Fish in the Sea" is an exploration of the history behind the longstanding policy of the US and other governments of managing fisheries for maximum sustainable yield, a policy dating at least to the dawn of the Cold War and having as much to do with political policy as with the management of fish stocks.

Maximum Sustainable Yield (MSY) is the theory that fish stocks can be exploited for large catches, year in and year out, on a scientific basis and without major damage to fish populations. As Finley demonstrates, the theory is plausible on its face, but in the 1940s and 1950's, in a world anxious for fish protein, the science simply did not exist to identify in a timely fashion the tipping point at which stocks would decline. A more conservative approach, advocated by a few scientists at the time, can be seen in retrospect as a better fishing policy. However, MSY won out because it better suited the diplomatic, military and economic goals of its advocates, the United States, Great Britain, Japan, and even the Soviet Union, by ensuring exansive access to the high seas.

Finley has done her research and carries her point, although portions of the text are repetitive and awkwardly edited and although she declines to give much credit to decision makers faced with the real and pressing demands of the Cold War. "All the Fish in the Sea" is highly recommended to students of the conservation of marine resources as a valuable lesson.

Ignore the title, just read it!

Despite the awkward title and the weighty issue, Carmel Finley has written a book that everyone interested in the oceans should read. It is really well-written. It strength lies in the clear way it traces our human relationship with the harvest of wild animals in the ocean, the policies that rest on our irrational belief that the seas' bounty was infinite despite many lessons to the contrary, and the continuing need to honor the role of fish in the sea, as well as once they are caught and eaten-- by humans, by pets, or by farm animals, including fish. There is a lesson for all public policy in understanding the emergence of the term maximum sustainable yield, and the minimally researched way that it and its underpinning myths became enshrined in global fisheries policy and management. For that alone, Finlay's book is worth reading.

I really enjoyed this book. It talks a great deal about the geopolitical role that Fisheries played in international relations during the turn of the century and its role in regards to modern day maximum sustainable yield. The books format could have used a little more organization. the first chapter is basically a summary of the entire book and if you had to read this book for a class you could probably get away with just reading that section. If this topic actually interest you I would suggest reading the whole text because it goes in depth a little more in each chapter. There is still a lot of repetition though.

This book is a review of ultrasound physics and instrumentation for the ARDMS SPI examination.  It contains easy-to-read narrative, summary boxes, sonographic images, review questions at the end of each chapter, and a 120 question registry review at the end of the book with rationales.  Additionally, there is an online component which consists of over 300 more mock registry review questions with rationales, powerpoints (for instructors), and an image bank.

About the Author
Steven M. Penny is an author, educator, registered radiographer (ARRT),and registered sonographer (ARDMS). His specialties in sonographyinclude Abdomen, Obstetrics & Gynecology, and Pediatrics. He haspublished multiple journal articles, including several in the Journal of Diagnostic Medical Sonography and Radiologic Technology, withsubjects concerning neurosonology, pediatric sonography, pathology, andpatient care. Mr. Penny is currently the Lead Instructor for the Medical Sonography program at Johnston Community College in Smithfield, NorthCarolina.  He lives in Garner, North Carolina with his wife andchildren.

All you need for SPI

I recently passed the SPI on my first try. The procrastinator I am, I have been out of school for 5 years, so I had to somewhat "relearn" physics. This book prepared me well. I did purchase two hours of the X-Zone, but that did not seem to help as much. You have to really understand the principles of physics to pass this test, and this book does a good job spelling it all out for you. There are helpful practice exams after each chapter. You also get access to an online practice exam, which I thought was too simplified as compared to the actual registry.

Great Physics Review!!!

This is an awesome review for the SPI exam! I recently took the exam and I studies this book all the way through. It is a very thorough review, but is not overwhelming with the amount of information. It is broken down in an easy to understand manner. It does not over exaggerate the material - it gives you the information you need to know to pass the SPI exam, so you do not waste your time studying tons of information that you never see on your exam. I really feel like this book well prepared me for my SPI exam. I felt as though the information that was on my exam was all covered in this one book. Give it a try!! You will not be disappointed!

helped me excel on the test

I just finished my test this morning and scored 644.

I did not have any guided training for this test and so needed a book that would be fairly comprehensive and yet easy to learn from. This book is about 190 pages or so and is very easy to read. I did not find myself overwhelmed or bored, nor was it too wordy. The diagrams, pictures, etc are all easy to understand and augment the points being made int eh text. The questions at the end of the chapter reinforce the concepts and key points from the chapter; they are slightly easier than the actual examination but it is not a huge difference.

For me at least, this book (read it twice) in conjunction with the ARDMS provided practice tests ($25) and reviewing the semi interactive questions was enough. Things went really quite smoothly.

I will definitely be using Steven Penny's book for the abdomen preparation too.

One of my favorite books of all time

The satirical humor in this Harlem-Renaissance novel has me rolling on the floor laughing. Why don't we teach this novel in the classroom? It takes the color issue & turns it on its head. Completely irreverent in its acknowledgment of great African American leaders. One of my favorite books of all time.

Insightful Look into Race

This book is a classic! Schuyler finds a way to connect with the idea of race, colorism and the construction of inequality in America, all while parodying many of the leading black intelligentsia of the day. Schuyler finds a way to really connect using his satire and drive home his points with a fun and somewhat irreverent story. Definitely worth a read, and has some interesting parallels to the current discussions of race in America today.

a very good read in so much as it exposes the illusion of race in the the world today. i am surprised this book has'nt been made into a movie. the closest i've seen was the movie THE WATERMELLON MAN. unfortunately, i am not sure if today's youth will (or would) fully understand the books' full meaning..i will leave that up to the reader...highly recommended though.

The book contans a great deal of useful information about the attitudes and problems of the County cricket teams and is essential
reading for anyone interested in the future of cricket. It tends to wander in its presentation from one topic to another but Chapter Fifteen entitled Time for a "C" Change is very useful as a base for discussion about what needs to be done.

No matter which side of the Gun Rights issue you fall on, you'll find this a fun read and learn a bit about the other side

You will not agree with everything than Dan Baum has to say, but that is not the point of the book. In this country and in our Government, we have tolerated name calling, assertions devoid of facts, threats, and belittling in the place of rational debate with the only result being that everyone is seething and left feeling that those on the other side are idiots. The internet is especially rife with this. Sheesh guys, lighten up! The right and the left are pushed into their respective corners at this point and they can't seem to even speak with each other.

This book is an attempt to restore civility to the discussion and even if you don't agree with everything Dan has to say, you will get something out of it. Conservative gun owners will start to understand that not all Liberals want to take their guns (40% of us actually have guns, many of us carry, and plenty of us don't think that 2A is at all ambiguous and that we could certainly be allys in this debate). Gun control advocates might start to understand that gun rights are often felt as part of the package of self reliance and personal responsibility that many gun owners and 2A proponents have and why many get so worked up when their gun rights are threatened. They might start to understand that they can't just keep the parts of the Constitution that they like and steamroll those they don't and they may start to come to the conclusion that an Assault Weapons Ban is pretty ludicrous. Seriously, if you've ever been to a gun show or shooting range you'll realize that that horse has long ago left the barn.

"Gun Guys" is a fun read for everyone but especially for us liberals who have gotten into the habit of swapping their "North Face" beanies for "John Deere" caps, and leaving their Starbucks lattes in their Subarus just before going into their local gun store.

BTW I'm a liberal and I love my country, love clean water, big skies, and wide open places, love the constitution (all of it), voted for Obama (twice) and think he's a decent guy, but also love the smell of cordite, the crack of a supersonic round, and the feel of a warm barrel after sending a pile of lead down range and love that we live in a country that trusts its citizens enough that it guarantees this right as one of its founding principles.... and I'm not the only one.

A Definite Mind-Changer

I started this book as a general foe of guns and a specific foe of assault weapons. Baum's well-written and never-preachy book made me realize how little I understood about most of the issues in the pro- v. anti-gun world. I'll be re-reading this one, probably within a few months....and instead of a library copy I'll be buying one so I can underline those passages most meaningful to me. About halfway through, I sent an email to 15 or 20 friends, some of whom are long-time NRA members, some of whom are so rabidly for or against guns that there's no talking with them, and some of whom were neither hot nor cold on guns. There's material enough in Gun Guys for all of them.

Amending the Second

A nuanced, balanced, and entertaining exploration of gun culture, 'Gun Guys' is Dan Baum's fourth book. The author decides to concealed-carry for a year, and travels around shooting ranges, gun stores, hunts, and meets with advocates on both sides of the gun debate. Mr. Baum manages to deliver a number of facts along the way, and is pretty convincing about the failures of various gun control measures that have been tried, or are under consideration.
If you're ex-military like myself, you have a certain healthy respect for automatic weapons; and if you're a left-leaning, big-city liberal, once again like myself, then you may feel rather conflicted about guns, as does the author. And he works it all out. One of Baum's suggestions is that if 'we' must have a liberal agenda of gay marriage and abortion rights, then 'they' should be allowed their guns. Fair enough.

About the Author
Janet Suzman was born in Johannesburg, graduated from the University of Witwatersrand, trained at LAMDA, and was at the RSC for a decade playing many of the heroines and culminating in a memorable Cleopatra. She has since pursued a richly varied career; twice winner of the Evening Standard Best Actress Award, she has also received Academy Award and Golden Globe nominations, twice won the Liverpool Echo Best Production Award and the TMA Best Production. She has diversified into occasional directing – beginning with her Johannesburg Othello in 1987 – and now teaches, lectures, writes and returns to acting, when the occasion beckons, with relief.
