Making Elementary Math Exciting!!

Dr. McVarish presents not only strategies for questioning, encouraging kids' curiosity and sense of wonder, helping students develop critical thinking skills, and inclusion of reflective mathematical thinking in all learning possibilities, but also provides tips on transitions, whole school projects, working together with parents, creative ideas on homework, cultural diversity issues in math, standardized testing, and much more. I don't usually say this about textbooks, but I really wasn't ready for this one to end. I'm almost ready to go back into teaching in elementary school classrooms just to try some of her methods :)

Clearly written and concise, plus the book as not big/heavy/bulky which I LOVE. Lugging around giant textbooks around campus is never fun. I have a concentration in economics and this book is great for me because there is no t any unnecessary fluff yet it is not dreadfully dull either.

From the Washington Consensus to Arruñada's Institutional Foundations of Impersonal Exchange

Since the Washington Consensus and the deregulation movement took place thirty years ago, administrative simplification and reduction of bureaucracy has been on the agenda of policymakers. In fact, economists tended to agree that a strongly market-based approach requires an effective public administration imposing light burdens on economic players (thus creating a business-friendly economic environment). This view was later popularized by De Soto's The Other Path in 1989 which inspired the work of many international organizations and the (by now) famous Doing Business Project in the late 1990s. Simplification, cutting red tape, one-stop bureaucratic agencies, reduction of licenses and procedures, de-formalizing business activities have become popular slogans with many governments around the world.

The important work of Benito Arruñada takes a fresh look at these issues. We all know that the Washington Consensus promotes deregulation, but it also defends strong legal security for property rights (understood in a nontechnical way, that is, both rights in rem and rights in personam) in the tradition of Coase, Williamson and North. In his book, Arruñada convincingly shows that certain simplifications of procedures and some forms of de-formalization actually hurt important safeguards. In other words, there could be an intrinsic and convoluted trade-off between the popularized programs of administrative simplification and adequate legal certainty. Eliminating certain formalisms might save some apparent costs in the immediate, but augment considerably transaction costs in time, therefore damaging the proper functioning of markets.

Economists have a tendency to see formalism as an example of capture by private interests, thus promoting rents, increasing transaction costs and, as a consequence, damaging business activity (including business creation and investment) and economic growth. In the context of contractual registries, Arruñada explains that some formalism responds to efficient institutional design precisely to reduce transaction costs and facilitate impersonal exchange. More importantly, in the absence of such formalism, efficient transactions might not take place and market failures could be more acute.

My understanding of the policy implications from Arruñada's work is simple. First, not all simplification is good, not all formalism is bad. A degree of formalism is important to promote development and trade in a globalized world of impersonal exchange. Second, when de-formalizing, policymakers should consider the extent to which they are eliminating unnecessary procedures (those in place to satisfy mainly a few particular private interests) and not institutions governing property rights protection. Finally, the appropriate formalization in the context of contractual registries (for property as well as for business transactions) responds to a set of determinants identified by Arruñada that could vary across jurisdictions. Concerning de-formalizing, there is no such thing as a "one-size-fits-all" policy.

Public Institutions and Endogenous Information in Contracting

Benito Arruñada's Institutional Foundations of Impersonal Exchange: Theory and Policy of Contractual Registries is an impressive and erudite study of the relationship between legal institutions and impersonal exchange. While clearly valuable for better understanding policies regarding formalization, in my mind it also introduces ideas that are relevant for contract theory more generally and yet hardly treated in the literature.

Since the 1970′s economic theorists have understood that information asymmetries between parties who write contracts are a key source of inefficiencies in exchange. Since then, a vast literature has developed exploring this idea from many different angles. Nevertheless, two key features usually appear. First, the set of parties who write contracts all observe each other, know they are contracting with each other, and (with some exceptions) observe the terms of the contracts agreed. Second, the information asymmetries are assumed to be a fixed, exogenous feature of relationships.

Benito's book convincingly shows that both of these limit our understanding of trading frictions in the real world. A key insight is that, in addition to his "type" or "action" (to use the language of contract theory), the formal contracts that an economic agent has written with others may be unobservable. After reading the book, it became clear to me that this dimension of non-observability is just as important for generating market failure as others. The second, and intimately related, insight is that the degree of non-observability of contractual rights depends on public institutions, in particular registration systems. Whereas it is unclear how a public body would help contracting parties discover -- to take a standard example -- each other's preferences over the good they are proposing to trade, Benito shows that they can affect the amount of information they have about each other's formal legal rights. And, in line with what one would expect, when institutions can reduce this information asymmetry, the likelihood of efficient trades increases.

Putting these two ideas together provides an original and to me very exciting view on the value of legal systems. Economists often discuss "good" legal systems as those which enforce written agreements transparently at low cost. After reading Benito's book, I recognized that legal systems also act to endogenously affect the amount of information that parties have available to reach those agreements in the first place. This deserves to be an influential idea in future discussions of law, economics, and contract theory.

Excellent resource for architectural materials

Materials are on the stage again. We see buildings that are using
emergent materials creating cutting-edge walls.

The wow effect was a direct result of using Teflon. Building
professionals are asked by friends what that transparent film is. Yet,
not many can answer it offhand. This book, by Prof. Fernandez can cure
that. The book will tell the reader ETFE (Teflon) falls under thermoset
of synthetic polymers, how it was invented, what are its characteristics and potentials.

The book covers many diverse issues in a very smart way. The book begins
by introducing how knowledge has been produced and distributed since the
industrial revolution and how emerging industrial ecology discipline
influences the invention, selection, and assembly of materials.
Then the body of the book provides taxonomic analysis of materials.
Basically they are divided into five material families; Metals, Polymers,
Ceramics, Composites, and Biomaterials and Loam. Each section provides
brief history, physical properties, behavior patterns, current usage and
potentials in the industry.

When a book becomes taxonomic, especially with the jargons of chemistry
and physics, it could easily become dull and flat. Fernandez is

Fun, hot and unique!

What happens when two headstrong people decide to get together? Sparks fly, although the attraction isn't instantaneous. What happens when the same people realize they're meant to be? Well, that's Scandalous.

Lori Foster writes characters that everyone can relate to because the characters are real. They have the same problems you and I might have and end up with sexy love interests to tangle with. Her work is always upbeat and refreshing. She takes tried and true real-life issues and makes them unique. These two stories in one are no exception.

In Scandalized, Olivia owns a tastefully risqué boutique. Tony owns the hotel housing her boutiques. Problem? He wants a baby - hers. What does she want? Him. I liked Tony's forthright approach: get in, state the problem and solution, and expect and answer. But I loved that his family threw curveballs into his plans. Who doesn't have the occasional interfering family member? I thought the interactions between Olivia and Tony's nieces and nephews were sweet and endearing to the reader. It didn't hurt that Tony was easy on the eyes, either!

In Sex Appeal, Shadow owns a risqué boutique that caters to the fun in sex. She's not all lace frills. She's got a biting sense of humor that knocks Brent on his bottom - literally! But where this novel could become a knock off of the previous work, Foster goes in a different direction. No screwy family, but rather a stalker bent on harming Shadow. I liked that Shadow was capable of taking care of herself and not afraid to tell Brent when to leave her alone. I also liked his chivalry. I want to read about characters that I could possibly know and Shadow and Brent are those characters.

There aren't too many stories that stick with you even past the last page, but both stories featured in Scandalous fit the bill. If you want sassy heroines and hunky heroes who aren't afraid to back down, then grab a copy of Scandalous and let the stories take you away. I give this work 5 books.

Scandalized!

The first in this two-fer tells the story of hotelier Tony Austin, who wants a child of his own, and boutique owner Olivia Anderson, the woman whose womb he has chosen to help him fulfill this dream.

Sadly, the plot was just as silly as it sounds. It was hard to respect Tony and Olivia - especially Olivia, in her dishonesty - and it was also hard to believe in their passion and love, particularly when he was so clinical about her when he selected her for the endeavor. It's okay for a light read, but the plot, the writing, and the characters are all just so-so.

Sex Appeal

Sparks fly when Shadow Callahan and Brent Bramwell meet in front of her risqué boutique Sex Appeal, but a stalker throws a wrench into the works.

Sex Appeal's plot, characters, and writing were all a small step above those of Scandalized!, but still nothing amazing. The characters were okay, although Brent was a jerk sometimes - like when he refused to believe Shadow actually had accidentally crashed in front of his house and was not just making up an excuse to see him. His parents were handled somewhat sloppily (his mom's a disapproving snob - oh, wait, she's changed her mind suddenly) as was the stalker, whose story line didn't fit in very well and was wrapped up too abruptly and conveniently.

All in all, Scandalous was a light, somewhat amusing read, but not as enjoyable as it should have been.

Definitely skip this one by Foster. The plots were stupid, the dialogue was lame and corny, there was no emotional depth, and the women were flat-out stupid. Foster has written much better.

Saul locates the source of many of the contemporary world's problems in a perversion of reason. He argues that while Voltaire had hoped to use reason as a tool to overthrow outmoded and harsh customs, his successors instead employed reason as an instrument of social control. The will of the people was unimportant to such acolytes of reason as Napoleon, who argued that uninformed popular opinion must be regimented through the supposed dictates of reason. The result of these misguided efforts at rational planning have been the horrors of modern warfare and the depredations of industrialism. Saul attributes such varied phenomena as the arms race, the "star system," and the rise of bureaucracy to hyperrationalism. Saul, a popular novelist ( The Paradise Eater , LJ 11/1/88), has a vivid style that makes his book enjoyable reading, but a clear sense of what he means by reason never emerges. Check More Detailed Reviews on Past Edition!

Amazon is failing to carry forward reviews from past editions, no doubt to open up space for new younger reviewers. Their view on this matter is flawed. The best, most detailed reviews, generally including links to other related books, are usually posted to the original edition. If you do not find the reviews here sufficient to your needs, look at the reviews offered for the same book in earlier editions, and you will find a wealth of informed detailed opinion otherwise not visible to those who do not know they have the option of accessing historical reviews of far greater value than the shallow reviews that tend to be the norm today.

Insightful post mortem on post modern America.

Must step in and remedy this one bad review. I've read everything by Saul and continue to be disappointed that he's not better known and more widely read. His books, including this one, are right on, and do a wonderful job of giving the reader a thrilling and fascinating analysis of what has gone wrong in the dictatorship of reason. I wish he wrote more. His Unconscious Civilization is one of the best post mortems on modern America I've read...he reminds me a bit of Neil Postman and Morris Berman...but more intellectually challenging.

Excellent explanation of how we ended up here

Written in clear language, as the author is a advocate of not using jargon. It sums up 400 years of terrible ideology that has led us to the present political mess we struggle in. It's never been so relevant, with every Western political capital now turned into a modern French court by the kleptocrats who run all our countries into the ground. After you read this you will instantly recognize the modern heroic leader and their courtesans, the present day experts who still live in boxes of secrecy, why our elites keep repeating the same ideology regardless of it failing, and interesting observations on how television is basically ritual.
