More Fringe? Yes, please

Even though I heard about the plans for it, I'd totally forgotten that the 'Fringe: Beyond the Fringe' comic series had even existed, so it came as something of a surprise when I realized this trade paperback compilation had just come out.

Parts of it make for fascinating reading (Joshua Jackson shouldn't quit his day job, God forbid, but he should also keep writing, good story!) and parts of it are just whimsical 'what-if' situations.

I enjoyed this volume quite a lot, even if I'm not the biggest comics/graphic novel fan in the universe.

Visually interesting in style, but also, they've got some stories to tell that are entertaining riffs on the sorts of weirdness that passes for normal in the Fringe universe.

If you're not (yet) familiar with Fringe, the tv show, by all means, get caught up on the dvds, but this is probably not a great place to start your explorations.

Fringe: Beyond the Fringe

Fringe: Beyond the Fringe, a graphic novel written by series star Joshua Jackson, is a great way to get back into the world of the TV show and explore the characters in alternate realities.

The first story, "Peter and the Machine," follows Peter (Jacksons' character) during his time between season three and four. As a "Fringie," reading these stories is an awesome way to delve deep into things we would not otherwise get to see. Since this is the last season of Fringe, it is nice to know that the world and characters we love will be able to live on in different ways.

The rest of the book tells fun "Imagine If...?" stories. We get the same characters we know and love, but in totally different situations from how we normally get to see them. "Imagine If Peter Never Died," "Imagine If Astrid was a Spy," "Imagine If Olivia and Peter had a Child with Cortexiphan Powers," "Imagine If Peter were a Superhero," "Imagine If Our Fringe Team were Criminals," "Imagine If Walter Outlived the Earth," "Imagine If Walter was in Violet Sedan Chair," and lastly "Ghost Writer." It is hard to pick a favorite because they are all so unique, but the one about Peter and Olivia's child had a sweet and surprise ending that my mushy heart could not ignore!

That being said, there was not a story I did not like. They were all so creative. There was drama mixed with comedy, and of course, sci-fi. And Fringe would not be Fringe without its Easter eggs. Tiny bits from the show are hidden in the pictures and jokes. The artists on this project should also be commended because without them, the story would just be in your imagination. Each story has a unique art style, bringing the words to life.

So if you are a fan, and I imagine you are if you are reading this, hurry and download the book to your Kindle, Nook or download and read on your PC/Mac. (You can also order a hardcopy and re-read it later!)

Loved this. Its a graphic novel, aka comic book, but its awesome. I love the show, and cant believe it ends tonight.

Pierre Burton is the internationally renowned bestselling author of fifty books and the recipient of over thirty literary awards including the Governor-General s Award for Creative Non-Fiction (three times). Pierre Berton passed away in 2004.

The content of the book was exactly what I was looking for and enjoyed it wholeheartedly. As for the condition of it, it was not in pristine condition as advertised. For one that collects Pierre Berton books it was a bit of a disappointment.

Berton is a master

There are few writers I would care to know. Many are surly, aloof and unapproachable. But Pierre Berton seems affable, approachable and very smart. I have read almost all of his books and, while I cannot recall the specifics of Drifting Home, it doesn't matter. ANYTHING by Berton is worth reading. He is smart, sharp, witty and as level-headed as they come. He writes beautifully and is a natural story-teller. What also comes across is his fierce pride in, and dedication to, Canada and her provinces. Born in the Yukon Territory, he traveled the world and finally settled in the outskirts of Toronto, Ontario. He wrote for Macleans and other publications, kept and active and lively presence on the radio and TV, and wrote books that celebrated Canadian life. There are few writers who can hold a candle to Berton. I have been enriched by his books. Highly, highly recommended.

A beautiful read if you love stories of the Canadian wilderness

I am an Australian reader and have just experiencd an amazing one month private bus tour right up through British Columbia , The Yukon and North West Territories travelling on the Alcan Highway and then the 900km gravel Dempster Highway right up to Inuvik and then on to Tuktoyaktuk by light plane - What an adventure! - in doing all this , I became immersed in Canadian history along the way - oh, the "romance" and hardship of it all from the Klondike Goldrush in 1898 to the hardships , even today , of living in such isolated and extreme conditions . We stayed in Whitehorse and Dawson City for a few days and this true story covered all the route covered in the story, although theirs by boat and mine by road . I was enthralled as those amazing rivers up there are what northern Canada is all about . You couldn't help but love this book , most especially if you have travelled, by any means , in this area . I purchased the book on Kindle and read it whilst on the trip , which added to my knowledge and great pleasure, of the whole experience.
The family love for each other so beautifully expressed by the author is very moving and truly binds the whole story and adventure togther . A very uplifting read indeed .

Not my first choice

A good book, but very dry to read. Also, most of it deals with British and the European Union laws. This is NOT a good book for someone trying to understand TS/TG. I did get some really good information out of it, but for the size and the cost, it would not be my first choice. There's other books out there that are better.

Quinn Bradlee attended Landmark College, American University, and the New York Film Academy. He has made a series of short documentary films about children with learning disabilities and rare genetic syndromes, and he has launched a website to create a community for LD kids and their families. A life of differences

Quinn Bradlee is the son of former "Washington Post" editor Ben Bradlee and his wife, reporter Sally Quinn. Quinn was born with a heart defect and had a number of health issues throughout his life. When he was 14, he was finally diagnosed with VCFS (velo-cardio-facial syndrome) a genetic abnormality which is the second most often occurring disability (Down's Syndrome is number one.) One consequence of the syndrome is having a learning disability. I read this book since I am married to a man with a severe learning disability (dyslexia), the mother of a son with a mild learning disability (dysgraphia) and taught students with learning disabilities in public schools for a number of years. I wished to compare Quinn's experiences with my observations. Quinn's prose seems brash, yet I know this partially relative to having a learning disability and might partially be due to his recognition of his parents' celebrity. At times I cringed, recognizing "traps" Quinn found himself in during his schooling. Thankfully, Quinn and his parents found a school and teachers who concentrated on Quinn's strengths. If only we could do this for all students - special needs or not.

Opening a window

Fast read; I scooped it up in an evening. Clear writing, to the point, funny, thoughtful and thought-provoking. I liked how the authors allowed important players in Mr. Bradlee's life to speak in their own voices in full passages, such as Mr. Bradlee's doctor.

Mr. Bradlee was pretty forthright about how his parents' resources and connections did garner him benefits that others might not enjoy. He was also candid about how sometimes it really sucked to have learning disabilities.

Some standout excerpts:

On his love of surfing: "I'm not a pro surfer or anything close to it, but that's not the point. The best surfer is the one that's having the most fun."

"Poetry by sixteen-year-old kids sucks by definition."

On what it's like to feel isolated: "Sometimes I'll see a leaf being driven over by cars, and it'll slowly get to the other side of the road. That's how I feel from time to time."

This is a good contribution to the collection of books by individuals whose brains work differently than most.

A walk in his shoes.

This book not only educates you on his syndrome, but is a real walk in his shoes. We THINK we can understand how it feels to someone special. Quinn Bradlee lets us become him. I am thrilled to have that experience. I better understand how to interact with all types of people. Should be required reading for all high school kids. Some language and personal experiences by Quinn make it questionable for kids under high school age. Parents,however, should read parts of this book to those younger kids. This is a book about understanding and tolerance.

Bob Marley lives!

It is very refreshing to see and read this little book adapted from Bob Marley's joyous song. The illustrations are delightful and so animated and colorful that the book comes to life for the toddler generation. This book compliments the song beautifully. This is a good way to bring the music of Bob Marley's to a new generation. The young toddler set can't help but sing the verse over and over. Don't worry about a thing cause every little thing is gonna be alright. This is a message for you cause everything gonna be alright. An Eskimo Kiss to These Writers

In a previous anthology, the editor wrote that he amassed humorous writings from First Nations Canadians to counter the idea that they are dour or tragic. Here, he wants to fight the idea that Natives are asexual. The first chapter deals with downstairs hair and the last deals with an older woman's sexuality, so you know you are in for a ride with this book. The book has slightly more male authors, but it does try to be gender-diverse. The anthology has writings from straight men, straight women, gay men, and a lesbian.

It is fascinating to compare First Nations concerns with those of Native Americans to the south of them. In this country, myriad Native Americans are multiracial, but this book. like many others, separate Metis (mixed-race Native Canadians) from monoracial ones. Here, First Nations members tentatively use the term Two Spirits, almost questioning whether it's just an American thing. In American works, authors say the more traditional and older the American Indian, the more likely they are to accept sexuality and gender diversity. One author here says Canadian elders accuse gays of being inauthentic. This book is not all fun and games: like Native Americans forced to attend boarding schools, the First Nations authors here say they were sexually abused in such schools. (In the chapter on this topic, you couldn't really tell the gender of the author, and I'm thinking that was purposely done.) In the same way that some differentiate between Native Alaskans and those in the lower 48, this work suggests that Inuits and First Nations people may seem themselves as being separate groups.

I'm an African American and the subjects mentioned here were soooo different from those brought up in my communities. These Natives feared being dismissed as asexual whereas Blacks resent being deemed oversexed. One author here said Natives are trying to learn to be proud of flat bottoms, but we Blacks discuss our juicy counterparts. One author said few white women were around when whites and Native Canadians first came into contact, thus the men of these races didn't fight. However, much effort has been applied in the United States, historically, to keep Black men and white women from connecting (anti-miscegenation laws, the Scottsboro case, Jim Crow, lynching, etc.). I actually wonder if a student could write a paper comparing this book to books on African-American sexual matters.

I am soooo glad this book was put together. For the most part, it's a quick easy read. You definitely don't have to be Canadian to understand it or appreciate it.

Wrong Audience, I Guess

I have every single Uncle John's bathroom reader except the two on order that haven't arrived yet. I mistakenly bought some anthologies which combine other books, so look for "all new" on the covers. I might be Uncle Johns biggest fan! When "Sully" landed his plane the Hudson, it reminded me of a BR story called the "Gimley Glider" which detailed an even more amazing and difficult landing in Canada. I paraphrased it, sent it to our local paper, gave credit to the BR and they published the story. The newspaper's story got dozens of responses with people wanting to know how to get a Bathroom Reader. Fast Forward. I bought the "For Girls Only" edition, and even though I'm a guy, I thought that this book would contain the fascinating information the others did. I doesn't. Pure and simple. It's double-spaced, for some odd reason. I am no sympathizer with the feminist movement, but I thought the contents were rather condescending. To be honest, for the first time in my life, I didn't finish a Bathroom Reader. There are a couple "For Kids" BR that I don't own, but I can tell you this, ALL the others I own are fantastic. I'm not condemning For Girls Only, just suggesting that why buy it when you can use your money to buy a more substantial and interesting book from the same creator!

My 11 yr. old daughter really enjoyed reading this book. She quoted parts of it to the rest of the family for days.

Great range of topics of interest to Pre-teen Girls

My 11 year old daughter has been seen carrying this book around and reading the short articles between other activities. It started out in the bathroom, but was too good to keep there.
