The Lives They Left Behind: Suitcases from a State Hospital Attic, by Darby Penney, Peter Stastny

“The Lives They Left Behind is a deeply moving testament to the human side of mental illness, and of the narrow margin which so often separates the sane from the mad. It is a remarkable portrait, too, of the life of a psychiatric asylum—the sort of community in which, for better and for worse, hundreds of thousands of people lived out their lives. Darby Penney and Peter Stastny’s careful historical (almost archaeological) and biographical reconstructions give us unique insight into these lives which would otherwise be lost and, indeed, unimaginable to the rest of us.” —Oliver Sacks

“Fascinating. . . . The haunting thing about the suitcase owners is that it’s so easy to identify with them.” —Newsweek

When Willard State Hospital closed its doors in 1995, after operating as one of New York State’s largest mental institutions for over 120 years, a forgotten attic filled with suitcases belonging to former patients was discovered. Using the possessions found in these suitcases along with institutional records and doctors’ notes from patient sessions, Darby Penney, a leading advocate of patients’ rights, and Peter Stastny, a psychiatrist and documentary filmmaker, were able to reconstruct the lives of ten patients who resided at Willard during the first half of the twentieth century.

The Lives They Left Behind tells their story. In addition to these human portraits, the book contains over 100 photographs as well as valuable historical background on how this state-funded institution operated. As it restores the humanity of the individuals it so poignantly evokes, The Lives They Left Behind reveals the vast historical inadequacies of a psychiatric system that has yet to heal itself.

From Publishers Weekly
When New York's 120-plus-year-old mental institution Willard State Hospital was closed down in 1995, New York Museum curator Craig Williams found a forgotten attic filled with suitcases belonging to former inmates. He informed Penney, co-editor of The Snail's Pace Review and a leading advocate of patients rights, who recognized the opportunity to salvage the memory of these institutionalized lives. She invited Stastny, a psychiatrist and documentary filmmaker, to help her curate an exhibit on the find and write this book, which they dedicate to "the Willard suitcase owners, and to all others who have lived and died in mental institutions." What follows are profiles of 10 individual patients whose suitcase contents proved intriguing (there were 427 bags total), referencing their institutional record-including histories and session notes-as well as some on-the-ground research. A typical example is Ethel Smalls, who likely suffered from post-traumatic stress disorder as a result of her husband's abuse; misdiagnosed and institutionalized against her will, she lived at Willard until her death in 1973. While the individual stories are necessarily sketchy, the cumulative effect is a powerful indictment of healthcare for the mentally ill. 25 color and 63 b&w photographs.

Could Have Been So Much More...
By B. Bielen
I was gravely disappointed by this book. What could have been a unique, enlightening, and fascinating piece of work was simplified beyond belief, full of opinions instead of research, and really did far less justice to the individuals profiled than the author appeared to believe.

And...ok, this is an extreme pet peeve of mine...the editing was terrible. What it is lately about editing that has become so difficult? And we're not even talking about true editing, just simply making certain there are no typos and that form and grammar are correct. This was so poorly done it was painful to read.

I had looked forward to this book for some time, so I was very disappointed when I got through the first ten or so pages and realized it really wasn't for the thoughtful reader who wants solid research behind a story. No, it was a quick read for a non-critical thinker that likes to be hand-fed polemics.

Sorry.

Interesting, but disappointing
By I. Detest-Neiklot, J.R.
I bought this book primarily thinking that it would be an even-handed exercise in sociology and amateur archaeology. As someone who really enjoys exploring abandoned buildings and postulating on the things people "leave behind" to be forgotten and then found again, I was really excited about the idea of finding out more about the lives of actual mental patients during the period of widespread institutionalization. Overall, my reaction to this book was mixed.

First of all, the authors of this book take a very strong anti-asylum tone. While it stands to reason that conditions in the asylums at the time were far from what would be considered acceptable today, no comparison is made nor information given as to how Willard compared to other asylums at the time. Furthermore, the authors shed very little light on the condition of psychology as it existed in the 1930s, 40s, and 50s. Other than arguing that a culture prevailed which encouraged a maintenance of the status quo in order for the hospitals to exploit the free labor of the patients, little insight is given (and even this argument is weakly made).

Another problem that I found with this book is that very little information is given on how the details of the lives of these people were acquired. While some of the information is explicitly drawn from the case files as well as interviews with workers at the asylum, the narratives are filled with holes in which the authors posit a number of intriguing, but unsupported theories. An example of this may be seen in a description of someone as being "close to her family" due to the fact that she had personal phone numbers in her possessions. Likewise, on several occasions the book posits that a patient may not have been popular or easy to get along with, due to the frequency of her changing address. While certainly one possibility, such assertions are made continuously on a whole variety of subjects with what appears to be scant grounding.

Generally, the portrayal of health care the authors seek to portray is one which is callous, cold, unsympathetic, and deliberately exploitative. Generally, the people analyzed by the authors are portrayed as being generally normal, ordinary people- who through some quirk, a high degree of emotional stress, or even sinister machinations- were involuntarily warehoused in a sort of prison which only worsened their condition. The symptoms of the patients are presented in a curious, detached sort of way, and at no time do the authors raise any questions with regards to what sorts of conditions the patients may actually have had, or that they were genuinely suffering from serious mental disorders. While some of this may certainly be true, the positions of the authors- that people were incarcerated for decades in mental hospitals simply for becoming upset in public or trying to talk with the president-- seems unlikely.

When the man in question is arrested by the Secret Service and sent to a mental hospital for trying to see the president, the authors postulate that the Ukranian man was just misunderstood and didn't realize that one does not simply walk into the White House to meet the president. The fact that he refers to himself as Jesus Christ in his interviews is not seen to be a sign of mental disorders, so much as an unusual way of expressing his personal innocence. While this is all very psycho-analytical, it does very little to explain how a handful of doctors-- faced with overcrowding and deteriorating facilities-- would have been unable to see the misunderstanding and let him go instead of keeping him locked up for 30+ years.

Furthermore, the book is compounded by a number of factual errors. For example, in describing the arrival of a Ukranian national to the hospital, the authors refer to the armies of tanks which fought in the Ukraine in 1940 after the Germans had pushed past Leningrad (for the record, the Germans did not invade until 1941 and Leningrad is in Russia, on the opposite side of the country from the Ukraine). Likewise a half-French, half-Italian woman is described as coming from countries from which there were "few immigrants to the United States."

Overall, this book is an interesting look at the lives of people held in almost permanent sequestering inside a mental hospital. However, given the ideological bent of the writers, one cannot help but feeling as though the tragic lives of these people are being filled in or "colored" in order to make a case for the elimination of in-patient mental health care.

I was so disappointed.. I would like to profess this by ...
By Marie Hein Christiansen
I was so disappointed..

I would like to profess this by saying, that I looked very much forward to reading this book, and was extremely exited, when it first arrived in the mail.

However. Halfway through the first chapter, I started getting a strong sense, of an anti-psychiatry agenda. Which is fine, but this is not what I bought the book for. A couple of chapters in, it started getting really distracting. All of the sudden, the book seemed to be more of a soap-box for the authors, and the stories they were supposed to tell are interrupted by their constant agenda.
I mean, I know asylums wasn't the perfect solution, and I know a lot of people suffered in them, but you have to take history into consideration; psychiatry wasn't a very developed field at the time and the doctors were grasping for straws, trying to help very sick people. I refuse to believe, that every doctor, nurse, and caretaker at this hospital were as oblivious, cruel and negligent, as this book tries to make them appear. In a lot of the chapters, the authors write things like "If they had only bothered to listen.." or "If they had only cared..", which is just an enormous assumption to make, about all the people who worked there and the work they did.

I am constantly made aware of how incredibly presumptuous the authors seem to be. "Oh, she wasn't sick at all, she just had a quirky personality", type-comments. I'm sorry, but they didn't know these people, so it seems a bit arrogant to me, to suppose things about people you've never met.
I am so annoyed, because the concept of the book is - to me - genius. These writers had a brilliant opportunity to do something great, to dive into the complicated lives of people who suffered loss and tragedy, and finally give them a voice. Instead they chose to focus on their own voices. This final point is especially offending to me.

Also, the editing is horrible. Typos everywhere.

I am so sad, that this book left me so disappointed, because initially it seemed to be everything I could wish for, from a good book.
Unfortunately, I have now fought myself through seven chapters, and I am strongly considering leaving this book in the trash, since I can't really see myself giving it to anyone - it is simply to poorly written, factually wrong and biased.

Not cool. Extremely let down.

Road Rage, by Richard Matheson, Stephen King, Joe Hill, Chris Ryall, Phil Noto, Nelson Daniel, Rafa Garres

Acclaimed novelist/Eisner-winning graphic novelist Joe Hill collaborated with his father, Stephen King, in Throttle, for the first time on a tale that paid tribute to Richard Matheson’s classic tale, Duel. Now, IDW is proud to present comic-book tellings of both stories in Road Rage. Adapted by Chris Ryall with art by Nelson Daniel and Rafa Garres.

Exciting and tightly written
By Cypress Green
NO SPOILERS
Two short stories in one graphic novel.
In "Throttle," Hill and King pull together a short but exciting tale of another, and very different, son and father. As the description provides, their biker gang is pitted against a murderous trucker who mysteriously wishes them ill. Father and son's personalities and relationship are well drawn and believable. The comic is based on their short story Throttle (Kindle Single).

A short story needs to be lean and tightly written, with no elements useless to the plot and character development. Hill and King are both sharp writers who know how to make a character feel real and relatable. Matheson's "Duel" main character is also well defined, but with less background or final explanation. Matheson's story Duel inspired Hill and King's.

The book includes a comics version "Throttle" and one of "Duel" as well. I have never read "Duel" as a short story but, based on the perfect adaptation of the "Throttle" half by Ryall, I'm guessing it's true to Matheson's original.

I bought the short story version of "Throttle" first, but after reading the comic I didn't feel the comic was necessary. It felt superfluous, and I'm a big comics fan. Not that it's poorly done; it's well illustrated and true to the short story. Ryall and Daniel adapt and illustrate it well, with, IMHO, two caveats. The style used in "Duel" was not really to my liking. Not poorly done - just not my cup of tea. I loved the illustrations for Throttle, except the use of Ben-Day dots. I found them a little distracting. If they'd been a little smaller I would have liked them better. However, these opinions are just about my personal taste and you may disagree. In addition, the two stories are so similar that it felt like a bit of a repeat reading them as the only things in the book.
It also included a prologue by Joe Hill explaining how and why they wrote the story. I enjoyed reading that.

The kindle edition of the "Throttle" short story also includes a couple of illustrations from the comic.

burning rubber on the highway to hell
By A Customer
Road Rage is a collected representation of the comic book adaptations of the similarly themed Throttle- originally a prose piece by King and son Hill, and Matheson's Duel story- which Steven Spielberg later turned into a movie. The pair of introductions provide touching explanations to the King and son fascination over Matheson's original story and later film version, offering colorful mental imagery of just how cool the father-son relationship expectedly is. And both features certainly present a real world terror, as long and desolate strips of road mixed with the improbable actions of complete strangers can spin out of control into fast-paced dilemma after dilemma. Even cold-blooded murder.

Throttle is a hard-nosed roadside drama of a father and his adult son and their tribe of bikers, caught up in circumstances of the son manipulating the group into following up on a meth deal gone screwy. Their biker culture is well-played here as we see a side of Americana outside the law that many would think only exists as fiction on cable television. Unfortunately, even familial ties may be worn thin in this race to survival. Daniel does a smooth job on full art chores, competently doing the impossible of presenting captivating car chases in sequential form.

Duel is my favorite of the two, as a man on his way to a business meeting is caught up in the reckless games of a trucker seemingly gone mad. But up until the final scenes, and even beyond, is the driver just imagining his predicament? Garres does a GORGEOUS bit of artwork on this one, using a style that would strongly appeal to fans of Richard Corben or Robert Crumb, cartoonishly bending the roadways and physics alike in a drop dead serious tale of desperation and horror. His dark inks add to the overwhelming threat, giving a stark atmosphere on top of his masterful storytelling. Every page is just as beautiful as it is purposeful, really.

These are fun stories, but full of high speed action and violent gore. Lessons learned: Be kind to strangers, lest they catch you alone on the highway miles and miles from salvation. Also included is a gallery section displaying works from Phil Noto, Nelson Daniel, and Rafa Garres, Road Rage is a fine package, of a very different kind of scary.

Road Rage
By C. Dennis Moore
Richard Matheson and his fiction are one of the cornerstones upon which all speculative fiction since has been built. Along with Ray Bradbury, Harlan Ellison, Poe and Lovecraft, without Matheson many of today's horror writers wouldn't be where they are. Matheson's work touched more lives than many people even know; many episodes of the original "Twilight Zone" were his stories. In the 1970s, a young director named Spielberg was given a chance to turn a Matheson story called "Duel" into a movie, and we all know how that turned out. Matheson's influence across the genre is undeniable. So in 2009, a gaggle of authors submitted stories for an anthology paying tribute to this literary icon. One of those stories, "Throttle", was written by living legend in his own right Stephen King, and co-authored with King's son and up-and-coming demigod Joe Hill.

In 2012, IDW Comics and Chris Ryall combined the Matheson story with the King/Hill story into a 4-issue mini-series called ROAD RAGE and published it as a comic book.

As a product, the pairing and reconfiguring makes a good deal of sense. Both stories are very visual and lend themselves well to this medium--given the right artist; and with Nelson Daniel and Rafa Garres in charge, we have no worries.

Having read the collection, though, my only concern is was it necessary?

The father/son collaboration "Throttle" is an excellent story. The pair have taken the idea of the murderous truck driver from Matheson's "Duel", increased the body count, and made a much more complex story. In "Throttle", we've got a biker gang seeking revenge and stolen money, riding through the desert when they run afoul of a madman in an 18-wheeler. The trucker takes out a handful of bikers in their first meeting, providing the book with some outstanding visuals and immediately setting the tone for this unstoppable machine's rampage.

What King and Hill have done here that Matheson didn't--and it was a stroke of genius on Matheson's part--is give the trucker a motive and a backstory. We never delve into his history or see things through flashback, nothing so goofy; King and Hill manage that information as true masters, creating a very complex and compelling story.

But back to Matheson's genius. In the original story, "Duel", we never know anything at all about the trucker stalking the main character, Mann, and this works to make the character all the more terrible. In "Throttle" we come to understand why things are happening and we, as readers, come to feel something for the characters, both the bikers and the trucker. In Matheson's story, we come to feel only fear, and it works.

Both stories tackle the subject in different ways, but both do it perfectly and to different effect.

But was this collection necessary?

I'm still not convinced.

I love "Throttle". When I first read what King and Hill were doing--a biker gang is stalked by a killer truck driver--I thought, Oh, so they're just retelling the original story, only swapping out the guy in the car for guys on motorcycles...that oughta be fun...(insert sarcastic eye roll here). Little did I know they were doing so much more than that.

And I love "Duel". As a writer, pretty much everything I've ever read from Matheson has been an entire writing lesson in itself, and "Duel" is no different. This is a must-read story for anyone hoping to put words to paper and make something interesting. The problem is, I'm not sure it translates as well to the comic page.

Sure Ryall does a great job of getting us inside the mind of Mann as he's hounded by this mysterious trucker, and Rafa Garres's art is gritty and leaves you feeling like you need a shower. The adaptation of "Duel" is well-done. But in the aftermath of "Throttle", it feels like something is missing. If this were a serialized adaptation of several Matheson stories, I'd say "Duel" hits all the right notes. But with only two stories, and with the first story being so multi-layered, by comparison the "Duel" adaptation feels incomplete. The climax of the story feels rushed and the ending just falls off the edge of a cliff leaving us with a few ads at the back of the book and that's about it.

I was reading along, enjoying myself and all of the sudden, "THWAM! KRASH! BOOM! K-BOOM!"

Hell, I'm not even entirely sure what was happening in those panels. I read "Duel" over a decade ago and I don't remember the finer details, but I'm pretty sure Matheson's story was more interesting than that. I'm sitting here looking at the pages again and I'm still having a hard time piecing together just what happened. The climax in "Throttle" was easy to see, set up well, and executed perfectly. We even got a nice comedown from the action with a well-written denouement. But in the "Duel" adaptation, it's a few sound effects across 7 clumped together panels and "It was a primeval tumult in his mind...the cry of some ancestral beast above the body of its vanquished foe..." The end.

Yes, but HOW did he vanquish it? The staging of the climax was mismanaged and totally unclear on the page. And as much as I hate to say it, it greatly lessens the impact of the collection as a whole.

Ryall's adaptation and script are well-done. There was a father/son relationship in "Throttle" I didn't catch onto until much later in the story, but having not yet read the original prose version of the story--it's on my Kindle, I'll get to it--I don't know if that's a connection that's explained early on or not. Ryall makes good use of his narrative, though, and is able to add real tension to the pages.

The art--other than those last few pages in "Duel"--from Daniel ("Throttle") and Garres ("Duel") work well. The characters all look unique and the truck, especially in "Throttle" is a looming death machine defying the laws of physics, but doing it with style and a sense of impending doom that adds both movement and a feeling of breathlessness to the page. For sheer storytelling ability, Daniel is a master of his craft. Garres in his work on "Duel" instills a sense of anxiety and claustrophobia through a series of tightly-packed panels, plus his use of shadow and light really brings the heat of the setting home to the reader.

His work was definitely the more gritty of the two and brought back memories of that scene Matheson set so well in his original story.

Overall I loved ROAD RAGE. I just feel that, with a climax and resolution that is lacking so much, and to have that be the end of this story that spanned FOUR books--granted, the entire thing takes about half an hour to read from start to finish--it still leaves me with a big "okay...so?" in the end.

I think with a stronger, more well-choreographed ending, the entire book would have felt more complete. As it is, it feels like we're going along great and then we just--STOP. The end.

Hmm.

And given that these are very obviously two different truck drivers in two different stories in two different settings chasing two different protagonists . . . it's not like we needed "Duel" to properly finish off the tale of the mysterious Laughlin from "Throttle". Personally I would have been very happy with just an adaptation of the King/Hill story and left "Duel" to an adaptation of Matheson works, sandwiched between "I Am Legend" and "Nightmare at 20,000 Feet".

But still, those last couple of pages aside, ROAD RAGE is a good book and well worth the money. Definitely recommended. Now, as for whether it's worth a $25 cover price . . .

The Power of Witnessing: Reflections, Reverberations, and Traces of the Holocaust: Trauma, Psychoanalysis, and the Living MindFrom Routl

Witnessing comes in as many forms as the trauma that gives birth to it. The Holocaust, undeniably one of the greatest traumatic events in recent human history, still resonates into the twenty-first century. The echoes that haunt those who survived continue to reach their children and others who did not share the experience directly. In what ways is this massive trauma processed and understood, both for survivors and future generations?

The answer, as deftly illustrated by Nancy Goodman and Marilyn Meyers, lies in the power of witnessing: the act of acknowledging that trauma took place, coupled with the desire to share that knowledge with others to build a space in which to reveal, confront, and symbolize it. As the contributors to this book demonstrate, testimonial writing and memoir, artwork, poetry, documentary, theater, and even the simple recollection of a memory are ways that honor and serve as forms of witnessing. Each chapter is a fusion of narrative and metaphor that exists as evidence of the living mind that emerges amid the dead spaces produced by mass trauma, creating a revelatory, transformational space for the terror of knowing and the possibility for affirmation of hope, courage, and endurance in the face of almost unspeakable evil. Additionally, the power of witnessing is extended from the Holocaust to contemporary instances of mass trauma and to psychoanalytic treatments, proving its efficacy in the dyadic relationship of everyday practice for both patient and analyst.

The Holocaust is not an easy subject to approach, but the intimate and personal stories included here add up to an act of witnessing in and of itself, combining the past and the present and placing the trauma in the realm of knowing, sharing, and understanding.

Review

"We can be grateful for the publication of this book. It serves not only as a reminder of a deplorable human conflagration that Pines and others have urged us not to forget, but also as a reminder that we psychoanalysts need to resist the pull to overlook or deny the impact of external reality upon our patients. The book represents a counterweight to the unfortunate tendency that has arisen within our profession
to overvalorize the here-and-now interaction between patient and therapist, to the exclusion of appreciating what the patient has experienced en route to the analyst’s office. " The Psychoanalytic Quarterly, 2014

"Goodman and Meyers’s primarily experiential book stands testament to the power of witnessing. It allows readers to imagine what it might have been like to have experienced the unimaginable. The editors’ passion and dedication to their mission to keep the memory of the Holocaust experience alive in the minds of the living is impressive, scholarly, and creative. Their book will be of value to psychotherapists and psychoanalysts treating patients with traumatic experiences of varying degrees of severity." -Journal of the American Psychoanalytic Association

"This book manages to include many different voices and perspectives on the large subject of witnessing. There is much to be learned from this collection. Readers of this book will be challenged in unexpected ways. Memories may be stirred, and genealogies may be questioned. The editors are to be applauded for their choices and for bringing together all of this material in one volume." –Division Review

"Witnessing is indeed a process that involves experiencing the trauma. Goodman and Meyers' work with survivors and their children is an area that we need to continually observe. But it is not just the Holocaust that needs repeated witnessing―it is all areas of trauma. The Power of Witnessing focuses on the intimacy of the therapist with the survivor, which in turn helps widen the survivor's awareness of the residues and their continuing influences. This witnessing makes possible resilience." - Henry Krystal, M.D., author, Integration and Self-Healing (The Analytic Press, 1993)

"Witnessing―most readily thought of in terms of the Holocaust―is actually a vital intersubjective phenomenon that is central to the way that the interpersonal process facilitates individual consolidation and growth. As does a clinical analysis, so does this piercingly wise study of witnessing engage the reader in the active emotional experience of learning, leading one to know from both inside and outside, to understand from new depths. The contributions within this work expose not only the impact of trauma but, importantly, how the very act of witnessing is itself essential to life, to change, and to growth. It was so for me and I believe will be so for others: The reader of this powerful contribution will learn and will be enriched by the learning." - Warren S. Poland, author, Melting the Darkness (Jason Aronson, 1996)

"Part memoir, part ethnography, part depth-psychology, and part documentation of an event of human history where mountains of evil and occasions of sorrow met like never before, The Power of Witnessing is a stunning addition to the Holocaust-related literature. Distinguished psychoanalysts have joined hands with poets, painters, geriatricians, professors of English, and performing artists to produce a powerful collage of human suffering and resilience. The book is, at times, painful to read but never does it cease to be engaging and illuminating about the informative role played by those who have faced such suffering first-hand. It gently but firmly takes our hand and invites us to join the circle of witnesses to a great human tragedy. The book therefore serves both clinical and humanitarian purposes!" - Salman Akhtar, Jefferson Medical College, Pennsylvania, USA

Thank you to Nancy Goodman and Marilyn Meyers for the gift of The Power of Witnessing. Once you start this remarkable book, you don't want to put it down. That may seem very surprising when you are reliving and witnessing one of the worst examples of narcissistic rage and human destruction the world has ever seen. In some ways it is still beyond comprehension. However, you realize as soon as you start reading some of these descriptions that we owe it to every single person in the book (and elsewhere) who has suffered like this not only to read their story but to honor their ability to finally tell the world what they have suffered and lost. We must witness all of this and bear the pain. By being there with them and sharing it word for word, we can feel that we are doing our part in helping them not to feel alone and helping the world not to forget. When Dori Laub describes wanting to hug each person after they have given their testimony of their Holocaust experiences, I had the same experience as I finished each chapter. The sense of intimacy was profound. I thank Nancy and Marilyn for this incredible privilege and what they have given the world." - Carolyn Ellman, editor, The Modern Freudians (Jason Aronson, 1999)

"As I began to read this book I thought that I didn't want to feel what others had witnessed. Then I thought perhaps I am too ashamed by my fascination with the views that may be provided by those who witnessed these horrors. I now realize that all of my expectations were set ajar by the depth of humanity of the authors' experiences. Rather than turn away in horror I found that I was provided new hope that even in the most terrible of circumstances other human beings can offer something that makes one proud of our species. All who want to be reminded of the honor of life and the valor of some fellow beings should read these deeply moving accounts and new conceptualizations." - Steven J. Ellman, author, When Theories Touch (Karnac, 2010)

"The Power of Witnessing is a rich, disturbing, provocative, startling but ultimately inspiring collection of essays related to the Holocaust by some of the leading thinkers of our time on some of its key issues. We encounter incredible stories of cruelty, elevating ones on how to rise above it, and the challenge of retelling those stories. Though the focus on one level is the Holocaust, on another level it is really about the human condition. The book holds up a mirror for us to see ourselves―whether we are students or faculty on campus, those involved in interfaith relations or simply wish to reflect on the follies of man. Anyone who believes in our common humanity must take a long, hard look into this mirror. I am grateful to the contributors for allowing us this privilege. Read this book if you wish to confront the human condition and discover ways of transcending it." - Professor Akbar Ahmed, American University, Washington DC, USA, and author, Journey into America (Brookings Institution Press, 2010)

"Nancy Goodman and Marilyn Meyers have contributed a gripping collection―told by survivors of the Holocaust and the witnesses to their testimonies―about the power of witnessing. These highly personal essays are an important addition to the growing 'literature of testimony.' There can never be too many. Goodman, Meyers, and the authors in their book affirm that the power of witnessing lies in the restoration of humanity born in the process of the telling and the receiving of the horrors that mark this period in our collective history. The spiral of witnessing―across generations and consulting rooms, in the narratives, poetry, and images―leaves so much more than 'a trace.'" - Rachel Peltz, Psychoanalytic Institute of Northern California, USA

"As an artist and as the only daughter to Holocaust survivors, I celebrate the publication of The Power of Witnessing. Those of us raised in the presence of absence understand the necessity not only to 'remember' but to find a way of healing. There is no question that the writings in this book―whether coming from a psychoanalytic understanding or the beauty of a Myra Sklarew poem―emphasize finding a way to make peace with loss, to come full circle and allow the survival of beauty to live on." - Mindy Weisel, artist, Washington, DC, USA

"The Power of Witnessing, edited by Nancy Goodman and Marilyn Meyers, invites us to revive the horror, the outrage, and the violence done to blameless people during the Holocaust―and to their descendents. As the contributors to this book vividly demonstrate, the acts of witnessing that cause us to remember are not on behalf of a just revenge for injustice done; they remind us to do the work necessary within ourselves and our societies to do everything possible to ensure that its like will never happen again. The book combines oral history and psychoanalytic insight with moral persuasion." - Charles Hanly,  International Psychoanalytical Association

"Let me begin by saying I was reluctant to read this book. I anticipated it would be depressing and traumatizing. How wrong I was. In their edited book, The Power of Witnessing, Drs. Goodman and Meyers illustrate the importance of witnessing as an agent in healing. By using the experiences of authors who tell the story of their own trauma or witnessing the trauma of others during the Holocaust, the editors have broadened our understanding of witnessing to all important life events. At a time in our modern history when we are exposed to so many traumas in the world, it is especially important we not become immune but instead listen and try to understand the human effect these experiences have on individuals, groups, and society. All who want to help expand the human experience of others and themselves, whether they are psychotherapists, parents, teachers, or loving friends, should read this book." - Joyce Lowenstein, psychologist

"A deeply moving and important work. Goodman and Meyers' book brings together an exceptional group of papers which constitute a succession of Odysseys. Together they create a vivid testimony to human resilience in the face of essentially unimaginable terror and sadism. Through their nightmares and those confronted by each contributor, we learn just why the Holocaust is timeless and belongs to everyone and just why we must attend to all such new incidents with vigilance and inward questioning, balanced by the imperative we remain curious." - David Tuckett, University College London, and Fellow of the Institute of Psychoanalysis, London, UK

"Nancy Goodman and Marilyn Meyers' edited book, The Power of Witnessing, offers us a compelling and moving array of testimonies to the Holocaust. Through prose, poetry, film, and art, these distinguished authors allow us to witness the Holocaust and reflect on the long shadow it has cast on future generations. Each contributor provides an important window into this haunting and profoundly disturbing time in our history. As therapist editors, Goodman and Meyers bring a deep understanding of the necessity and power of witnessing―to know what was previously unknowable." - Kerry Malawista, co-author of The Bereaved Therapist (Columbia University Press, 2012)

"'There is nothing one man will not do to another.' Those words were written by the poet Carolyn Forche. It's the last line of her poem 'The Visitor' and it's separated or perhaps imprisoned on the page by white space. I've always found Forche's words haunting. There are some things I cannot even imagine. One is the Holocaust. Looking back on my life, I believe this word first became part of my vocabulary because of my mother. Growing up in the South Bronx in the 1950s, my mother worked in the Manhattan garment industry. Her employer and some of her fellow workers were Jewish. My mother was also a regular patron of small Jewish businesses in the Bronx, places where we purchased our food and clothes. Over counters, stories were shared and my mother came home with things she told me to never forget. Maybe this was my introduction to the importance of witnessing. What pain and silence was not hidden from my childhood eyes? Reading The Power of Witnessing made me think about memoir writing. The need to discover courage beneath the flesh. How does one find the strength to give testimony and the power not to forget? We live in an era of erasure. One click of a button can delete almost anything. And this is why the reflections and interviews in The Power of Witnessing contain not just the songs of survival but more the resiliency of living that can only be found in the human heart. There is such a thing as family and after all this suffering we must remember how to love. This is what we owe each other. Hopefully it will protect us from the trauma." - E. Ethelbert Miller, Poet and Director, African American Resource Center, Howard University

"Goodman and Meyers' groundbreaking book takes us on a journey where we grapple with the unthinkable horrors of the Holocaust. Their narrative, holding this richly diverse, edited collection of stunning memoirs and incisive essays, details their own encounters with first-person accounts and images of the brutality of the Holocaust. They pay close attention to the challenge of witnessing. The Power of Witnessing gives readers a vehicle to engage with the incomprehensible cruelty of the Holocaust and the hope of a greater capacity to be present with the suffering and pain of others." - Elizabeth Fritsch, Ph.D., President, New York Freudian Society

"Nancy Goodman and Marilyn Meyers have edited an important book, deeply moving and in many parts painful to read, helping us to reflect on the different aspects of the process of witnessing: its meaning and significance for the traumatized person as witness but also for the successive generations as listener and as secondary witness. This is particularly important in a time when the last survivors of the Holocaust are dying out. Remembering the Holocaust, we need to return to the witness's individual memory in order to not neglect the horrific, catastrophic, and traumatic experiential quality in the process of its historical description and classification." - Werner Bohleber, Ph.D., editor, Psyche

"This is a project of enormous reach, informed, most importantly, by a generous and empathic impulse to gather as many perspectives as possible for the purpose of reawakening attention to testimony, as opposed to dulling our collective interest through a dry academic recounting. It celebrates perhaps the most important action we can partake in as citizens living in the shadow of catastrophe: the dynamic and moral act of witnessing. This book reminds us of the great good that has come from that collective mission to keep memory alive through testifying and transmission, through cultural expression that's actively engaged with both historical archives and personal imagination. As a playwright and producer of Jewish theater, I find strength in its honoring the role of the witness and the power of collective witnessing―after all, isn't that what a theater audience is, a gathering of witnesses engaged in a collective act of empathy? I have a special appreciation for the chapters that specifically point to theater, film, photography, literature, and crafts as their own powerful transformational acts, finding redemptive byproducts in the creation and cultural responses to the Shoah, as we engage with history anew and afresh every time we experience a work of art drawn from the act of authentic witnessing. This is a compendium I'll keep returning to over the years, drawing inspiration and a grounding sense of the authentic. As we grow ever more distant from the Holocaust in time, vivid witnessing will keep its presence in our consciousness close, rich, and as real as we can possibly imagine." - Ari Roth, Artistic Director, Theater J

"The Power of Witnessing is an important contribution derived from the Holocaust. Nancy Goodman and Marilyn Meyers are well-respected psychoanalysts who have carefully studied the effects, direct and indirect, of witnessing the Holocaust. They clarify powerful ramifications not only for the survivors but for their children, relatives, and friends, illustrating vividly the power of witnessing such a grotesque degradation. Its extreme nature has led to impacts in a variety of fields and has lasting significance. The contributors to the book are very capable, and a particularly significant piece is an interview with Professor Irvin Staub. One hopes that this book will have far-reaching effects on those who care about our common humanity." - David A. Hamburg, M.D., President Emeritus, Carnegie Corporation of New York

"This is the book for adults who have an interest in the Holocaust and who know very little about it, and for people dealing with the effects of trauma caused by the very people who they thought were their friends and neighbors. It testifies to the healing power of talking about the shame of being a victim and the loss of faith in other people and the social system that a horror like the Holocaust leaves in its wake." - Fanya Gottesfeld Heller, author, Love in a World of Sorrow

"The Power of Witnessing is an overview of the teeming world of Jewish culture before the Holocaust and a living tribute to the memory of those who did not survive." - Aaron Lansky, President, Yiddish Book Center

"In demonstrating The Power of Witnessing, Goodman and Meyers illuminate the many subtle―and often surprising―aspects of this under-theorized topic. Without adhering to one dominant theoretical position, but resonating with several, a fundamental thread connects the varied chapters: our omnipresent need for a witness and the traumata that result from its absence or loss. This is a book about loss―individual and collective―and thus an exercise in mourning. But, more importantly, it is a profound testament to the healing powers of acknowledging, accepting, and absorbing the past through the mediation of witnessing. The reciprocal psychological changes in both witness and witnessed are revealingly articulated with courage and honesty by all who participated in this project. The process of mediation that allows terror of real experience to become symbolized, given voice, and shared are multiple, and multiply represented here: visual images, awake and dreaming; poetry; music; lists of names; memories and stories. Although the Holocaust is at its center, The Power of Witnessing speaks to a wider audience, and especially to those who seek to help others transform loss into hope for a future." - Bonnie Litowitz, Ph.D., Chicago Institute for Psychoanalysis

"Reading The Power of Witnessing was a deeply moving and enriching experience. I was obliged to relive the wrenching and inconsolable crying of my mother and her brothers when, at the end of World War II, they found out that all of their family had disappeared in Nazi concentration camps. It was an unimaginable pain that they could never recover from and which I have not forgotten, as I will never fail to remember the assassinations, injury, and terror that we Peruvians suffered during the years of violence in our country. The Hippocratic Oath dictates that the duty of the clinician is at times to cure, often to alleviate, and always to console. When there are such wrenching wounds as those caused by another human being, however, the duty broadens and compellingly demands the witnessing of the brutality of the occurrence and that we testify to it. As Freud wrote to Einstein: 'Brute force is overcome by union; the allied might of scattered units makes good its right against the isolated giant.' The magnificent and brave effort of Nancy Goodman and Marilyn Meyers to bring together a series of writings, of others as well as their own, that testify from different perspectives to the horror of the Holocaust, allows the reader to experience firsthand the power of witnessing." - Moisés Lemlij, M.D., University of Lima, Peru

"The Power of Witnessing is a powerful collection of papers that reaches into kinds of trauma that often are beyond words and that have affected not only the generations who lived them, but also the generations following. It is hard to read this without being moved in the deepest way by each person's unique contributions and without feeling grateful for their courage in sharing what they have shared. It will serve as a voice for so many of those who died without their specific stories even being known. It is an important contribution to insuring that the knowledge of the horrors suffered by millions, and the issues this poses in the generations following for both those that survived and those who were descendants of perpetrators, will not be lost to history. It is also a work of affirmation of the resilience of those who did survive and the courage and life force they were able to sustain and to pass on to future generations. Finally, it is a book based on the hope that we can learn from the utter darkness and horror of what transpired, and it raises questions that reach to the heart of what defines civilization and personal responsibility in ways that readers will have to struggle with for a long time to come. I think it is a vital contribution to the literature and one that will be read and reread." - Darlene Bregman Ehrenberg, Ph.D., author, The Intimate Edge

"Nancy Goodman and Marilyn Meyers have edited a deeply heartfelt, ethically necessary volume consisting of essays from psychoanalytic therapists who describe the personal resonances of the Holocaust in their lives. Taken together, these writings provide a collective power of witnessing as memory that begins to bring the forgotten experiences of the Holocaust's murdered victims into a containing circle of human belonging. The uniquely personal and emotionally evocative narratives of the different authors in this book provide an indvidual identity to victims who otherwise become lost in the abstraction of unfathomably monstrous numbers of Holocaust dead. Nancy Goodman and Marilyn Meyers have provided a great ethical and psychological service in addressing questions of knowing and not knowing the horror of the Holocaust." - Peter Shabad, International Association for Relational Psychoanalysis and Psychotherapy Newsletter

Memorial Mania: Public Feeling in America, by Erika Doss

In the past few decades, thousands of new memorials to executed witches, victims of terrorism, and dead astronauts, along with those that pay tribute to civil rights, organ donors, and the end of Communism have dotted the American landscape. Equally ubiquitous, though until now less the subject of serious inquiry, are temporary memorials: spontaneous offerings of flowers and candles that materialize at sites of tragic and traumatic death. In Memorial Mania, Erika Doss argues that these memorials underscore our obsession with issues of memory and history, and the urgent desire to express—and claim—those issues in visibly public contexts.

Doss shows how this desire to memorialize the past disposes itself to individual anniversaries and personal grievances, to stories of tragedy and trauma, and to the social and political agendas of diverse numbers of Americans. By offering a framework for understanding these sites, Doss engages the larger issues behind our culture of commemoration. Driven by heated struggles over identity and the politics of representation, Memorial Mania is a testament to the fevered pitch of public feelings in America today.

Review
“Memorial Mania is an important and much-needed book, one that complements the existing literature on memorials with richness and originality, and also forges new territory. Doss’s excellent and highly polemical critique of its resurgence furthers one of American studies’ most noteworthy traditions.”

(Michelle Bogart, Stony Brook University)

"Memorials carry enormous emotional and symbolic freight, providing clues as to how people feel about their society. This is the subject of Erika Doss’s scholarly and readable book, Memorial Mania. . . . I believe Memorial Mania will appeal to a wide audience—both inside and outside academia—given the quality of the writing and the presentation of the material. The book is packed with information and insight as it documents the growing phenomenon of memorialization in America; and 160 illustrations can only enhance the reader’s understanding and appreciation of the subject. . . . It is a sign of the quality of Doss’ work that I am left wanting more." —Anthropology Works (Anthropology Works)

“With its contemporary focus and astonishingly wide range of examples, Erika Doss’s Memorial Mania…considers not simply how commemorative practices reflect the feelings of Americans, but also how commemoration has become a crucial medium through which public feeling is structured, expressed, and archived. . . . What makes Doss’s book so valuable is that it reveals the range, complexity, and depth of emotion produced by memorial acts.”

(American Quarterly)

“Prodigiously researched, generously illustrated. . . . Readers will come away having learned a good deal about contemporary commemoration and possessing a new awareness of the value and interest of the study of public affect.” (Journal of American History)

“[Klemek’s] study succeeds in presenting the material in a succinct and comprehensible manner that speaks to the importance of transatlantic and global communication of ideas, while underscoring the enduring nature of the local in an increasingly technical and homogenized world.” (Architecture Boston)

About the Author

Erika Doss is professor of American studies at the University of Notre Dame and the author of Benton, Pollock, and the Politics of Modernism: From Regionalism to Abstract Expressionism, also published by the University of Chicago Press, among other titles.

Despite Issues of Bias, a Highly Valuable Book
By Stephanie L. Thompson
If you want a straightforward book about the history of memorials, then this is not the appropriate book for you. If you would like to know what exactly this book IS, read on:

In Memorial Mania, Erika Doss argues that in recent years, Americans have developed a near-obsession with creating more and more public memorials at a rate previously unmatched in American history. Doss maintains that this urgency stems from both anxiety about national identity and a change in how Americans deal with emotion, particularly when it relates to history and/or memory. Whereas in the past memorials pertained more to a need to commemorate great events or great people, a majority of today’s abundance of memorials commemorate emotion, such as grief, shame, or anger. This in turn, Doss argues, is a direct result of how affect has significantly gained predominance in modern American culture and is now valued as a source of knowledge. Emotion is no longer private, but something that is public and shared, often through memorials. In presenting her argument, Doss relies heavily upon primary sources in the form of the memorials themselves and also employs a great deal of psychology.

This book is a valuable work of scholarship. Doss manages to present an argument that is clear, thorough, and well-articulated. She expertly shows just how diverse the emotional responses to a monument can be in a society that is as multi-cultural as the United States. Her evidence, much of which appears in the form of excellent photographs of memorials in question, is compelling if at times overwhelming. The photographs are definitely one of the best assets of the book. The argument itself is highly interesting and innovative, in that Doss is analyzing memorials in light of affect rather than more traditional approaches, such as power or identity (although Doss does certainly tie in identity, too). Doss has a strong background in art history (all of her degrees are in this field), and that certainly shows up in her work. At the same time, by focusing so much on emotional motives behind memorials, Doss glosses over the possibility of more simple motives at the root of memorials (i.e. sometimes a cigar is just a cigar). Additionally, Doss struggles greatly with the issue of bias throughout the book -- she has definite opinions that she does impose on her subject matter, and some of her opinions, stated as though they were fact, could easily cause offense to a reader. In other words, read it with an open mind, and don't just accept every single statement as absolute fact.

Useful for scholarly research, and enjoyable as simply a non-fiction read
By lambbop
This book explores the sociological and emotional need/desire to memorialize in a clear and easily accessible way. Sometimes books like these rely too heavily on philosophy, but Doss' work uses plenty of examples and explanation to back up her points. I used this book while doing research for my thesis, but it could definitely be enjoyed as a casual non-fiction read.

Holiness, by J. C. Ryle

John Charles Ryle's best known works have been reissued and widely read over many years. The fine qualities of his writings have ensured that his books are still popular and useful. This volume has become a classic work and is known and loved by many throughout the world.

In days when evangelical preachers are accused of being either superficial or dull, we have here a great example of one who was neither of these things. As Bishop Ryle explains and applies his texts with his customary simplicity and directness, the listener will find his conscience pricked and his soul examined. Ryle addresses hard and trying subjects that most modern evangelicals have chosen to ignore: the power and depth of indwelling sin, the necessity of a holy life, the struggle and fight of faith, counting the cost of following Christ - and that's only in the first five chapters. Ryle's Holiness has become essential reading on this most important subject, and the first chapter, "Sin", has rarely been bettered.

J. C. Ryle (1816-1900) was appointed as the first bishop of Liverpool in 1880 and was the leader of the Evangelical Party in the Church of England for more than half a century. He is highly regarded for his plain and lively writings on practical and spiritual themes; their usefulness and impact have been consistently recognized and remain as wise and relevant today as when he first wrote them.

The Sword of the Spirit in the Hand of a Master Swordsman
By Jonathan A Blevins
J. C. Ryle is quickly becoming one of my favorite Christian writers. This book is, quite simply, THE BEST single work on the Christian life I have ever read. Ryle's insight is phenomenal, his exegesis is impecable and his humility is stunning--and all of this while maintaining one of the simplest, most approachable, most readable styles of any theologian ever. I was hesitant to pick up a book written by an 18th century Anglican (particularly one I knew virtually nothing about), but my hesitance was by no means merited.

Ryle speaks to the heart and soul of every man. He wields the sword of the Spirit like a skillful surgeon, piercing to the division of soul and spirit, of joints and marrow. He addresses hard and trying subjects which most modern evangelicals have chosen to ignore: the power and depth of indwelling sin, the necessity of a holy life, the struggle and fight of faith, counting the cost of following Christ... and that's only in the first 5 chapters! 'Holiness' is one of four volumes of what has been called Ryle's body of 'Practical Theology.' Each of these volumes is infinitely worthy in its own right, but 'Holiness' stands just a little taller than the rest. It is unique, not in its content--for Ryle's message is the message of scripture--but in its simplicity and singleness of focus.

Ryle just plain makes sense. His treatment of the texts which head the chapters is based on plain interpretation, common-sense exegesis and practical application. As he is fond of saying when interpreting plain-as-day passages which are often twisted and confounded by scholars and skeptics, 'If words have any meaning at all, then this is what the passage says.' But what is more astounding is that he does not side-step the difficult issues. Instead he takes them head on, making Christian theology and the principles of holy living seem so simple and obvious and straight-forward that I sometimes wonder what Bible I've been reading all these years to have missed so many beautiful truths. Christian, read J. C. Ryle. You will not regret it. He is a man who first and foremost loves the Lord Jesus Christ. This is the vital center of all his teaching and writing and the sole reason for his great power in ministry. Whether you are an erudite scholar or a hard-laboring farmer, a pastor or a layman, a spiritual elder or a babe in Christ--no matter where you are--Ryle's writings are for you. The love of Christ and the faith of this great 18th century saint cling to every page like an aromatic perfume.

To whet your appetite here is a quote from one of my favorite chapters, 'The Fight': 'There are thousands of men and women who go to churches and chapels every Sunday, and call themselves Christians. Their names are in the baptismal register. They are reckoned Christians while they live. They are married with a Christian marriage service. They mean to be buried as Christians when they die. But you never see any "fight" about their religion! Of spiritual strife, and exertion, and conflict, and self-denial, and watching, and warring, they know literally nothing at all. Such Christianity may satisfy man... but it certainly is not the Christianity of the Bible. It is it not the religion which the Lord Jesus founded, and His apostles preached. It is not the religion which produces real holiness. True Christianity is "a fight"' (p. 63).

Growing through grit in the grace of Christ
By Brian G Hedges
J. C. Ryle's classic calls Christians to the hard and happy work of growing through grit in the grace of Christ. With a double-edged sword, Ryle cuts through the errors of both perfectionism and antinomianism, legalism and license, sinless perfection and carnal Christianity. He exhorts us to run with perserverance the race set before us and fight the good fight of faith and strive to enter the kingdom, yet keeps before us the grace of God which alone enables such holy soul-effort. The book begins by examining sin, sanctification, holiness, the fight, the cost, growth, and assurance, and then goes on to explore other related themes including an excellent chapter called "A woman to be remembered" on Lot's wife and her tragic backward glance. The chapters are more expository than topical, yet full of application. Many extracts from old English Puritans are included, as well. This is a great classic that I hope gets many readings and rereadings in my generation.

Classic book
By Ashley L Hodge
I highly recommend this book by JC Ryle. Ryle comes as close to finding that necessary balance of truthfulness, yet compassion of any writer I have read. His main points in this book are that you must be called by the Father, justified by the Son and sanctified by the Holy Spirit to be saved. It is a terrific biblical account of conversion. This is an account that many professing Christians would find shocking today.
Ryle says that any true Christian must hate the world, Satan and sin to be a child of God. Without this inward warfare, there is no faith. Ryle has become my favorite author. After reading Holiness, I have ordered all of his other writings. His commentaries on the gospels are superb. I recommend Knots Untied as well. He was a plain speaking man whose heart burned with a holy passion for God.

True Tantra. Not Sex.
By Dawndee Lovejoy
Excellent book on what Tantra really is. Most people want to know about sex and Tantra, this book is not about that. Tantra encompasses your whole life and that includes honoring people in life, not just your sex partner. If you want to begin a journey to knowing and controlling your body and mind, this book is for you.
