Good ol' G1
By Ioga
This was a Christmas present for my son, who loves the Transformers and is currently mostly focusing on G1. He's very happy with it. I'm not very knowledgeable about comics, but it looks to me as if the art is well drawn (i.e., they didn't spend the entire budget on the cover art and put the second-stringers inking and coloring the actual stories) and the stories are fairly solid. Some of the stories are actually quite ingenious IMHO. Sometimes we get a little confused trying to reconcile characters and events with what happened on the TV show, but that's probably standard procedure for any TV/comic/movie tie-ins.
Speaking of which -- we read a couple of book versions of "Transformers -- the Animated Series" (confusing name IMHO since G1 and a lot of other Transformers, e.g., Beast Wars, were animated!) from the more-recent TV show. Those were just a series of screen captures from the episodes, which left me feeling rather ripped off. This book (Classic Transformers), by contrast, is a real, old-fashioned comic book, where the stories are completely original and all the art was done expressly for the book.
One thing that would have been nice: There seems to be no information on when the comics were issued. That would have helped a lot with context. But, other than that, we're extremely happy with this book (and the others in the series).

Marvel US Transformers comic books got better when UK Writer, Simon Furman starting writing Transformers Issue #56!
By N. Kok
I like this Transformers book. It brought back great memories of my childhood! I've read Marvel Comics Transformers #56-64 Back when It was first published in the early 1990s. I like this book because UK Writer, Simon Furman started his run on the American Marvel Comics Transformers series with issue #56-#64. These are well written Transformers stories by Fan Favorite UK writer Simon Furman with artwork by Jose Delbo and Geoff Senior! It is the Primal Scream and the Beginning of the Matrix Quest! I love Comic book artists, Jose Delbo and Geoff Senior's artwork. This is Transformers at its best! Highly Recommended it! A++++++

Different mythology from cartoon show
By Picardfan007
Just got this after I saw the latest movie. Love the art by inker Baskerville. I wonder if he is still in comics? The later issues have much better inking than the former ones. The stories are much more intricate than the cartoon show. While the cartoon show didn't have the luxury of appealing to comic readers, the plots are much better. If you liked the animated Generation one show, you'll love tis book.

Tales from the Expat Harem: Foreign Women in Modern Turkey (Seal Women's Travel)From Seal Press

As the Western world struggles to comprehend the paradoxes of modern Turkey, Tales from the Expat Harem reveals its most personal nuances. This illuminating anthology provides a window into the country from the perspective of thirty-two expatriates from seven different nations—artists, entrepreneurs, Peace Corps volunteers, archaeologists, missionaries, and others—who established lives in Turkey for work, love, or adventure. Through narrative essays covering the last four decades, these diverse women unveil the mystique of the “Orient,” describe religious conflict, embrace cultural discovery, and maneuver familial traditions, customs, and responsibilities. Poignant, humorous, and transcendent, the essays take readers to weddings and workplaces, down cobbled Byzantine streets, into boisterous bazaars along the Silk Road, and deep into the feminine stronghold of steamy Ottoman bathhouses. The outcome is a stunning collection of voices from women suspended between two homes as they redefine their identities and reshape their worldviews.

Excerpt from Introduction

If there were ever a place tailor-made to play host to wanderers, travelers and those pursuing lives outside their original territory, surely Turkey is that place. The perpetual evolution that travel and cultural assimilation visits upon the foreign born women in this collection echoes the continuous transformation that envelops the entire country. Threshold to worlds East or West depending on which way one faces, Turkey is itself a unique metaphor for transition. Forming a geographic bridge between the continents of Europe and Asia and a philosophical link between the spheres of Occident and Orient, Turkey is neither one of the places it connects. Similarly, foreign women on Turkish soil are neither what nor who they used to be, yet not fully transformed by their brush with Turkey. Our Expat Harem women are on the brink of reclassifying themselves, challenged to redefine their lives, to rethink their definitions of spirituality, femininity, sensuality and self. Aligned in their ever-shifting contexts, both Turkey and the expatriate share a bond of constant metamorphosis.

Delirious with influenza, a friendless Australian realizes the value of misafir perverlik, traditional Turkish hospitality, when she’s rescued from her freezing rental by unknown Anatolian neighbors bearing food and medicinal tea; a pregnant and introverted Irishwoman faces the challenge of finding her place in a large Black Sea family; a Peace Corps volunteer in remote Eastern Turkey realizes how the taboos of her own culture color her perceptions; and a liberated New York single questions the gallant rules of engagement on the Istanbul dating scene, wondering whether being treated like a lady makes her less a feminist.

These are among the Tales from the Expat Harem. The titillating, anachronistic title acknowledges erroneous yet prevalent Western stereotypes about Asia Minor and the entire Muslim world, while also declaring that our storytellers share a common bond with the denizens of a traditional Turkish harem. Much like the imported brides of the Seraglio, Istanbul’s 15th century palatial seat of the Ottoman sultanate, our writers are inextricably wedded to Turkish culture, embedded in it even, yet forever alien.

Canadian Resident of Turkey Delighted!
By Jacqueline Mallais
I read "Expat Harem" just days after its release in Istanbul, and immediately felt an injection of positivity and rejunvenation in my choice to live in Turkey. Having been in Turkey these past 3.5 years, I thought I had seen and experienced quite a bit of Turkish life and culture, but reading this book opened my eyes to all kinds of new possibilities that are still waiting for me. It's an inspiring collection of the adventures and observations that a medley of women from different nationalities and backgrounds experienced in the past three decades, from touring around Turkey in the 70's to personal accounts of family traditions and even superstitions. I especially enjoyed one woman's account of her neighbours' generosity when she was sick for days and couldn't leave her apartment. They came over in a large group, to stoke up the fire in her woodstove, to clean up her house, to change the sheets on her bed and to make her a healthy breakfast, all in the name of fellow-compassion. When she asked them how they knew she was sick, they told her that they had noticed her absence for a few days and were worried about her. This is just one sample of Turkish caring and hospitality found in this book. I thoroughly loved reading this book for reminding me of all the positive aspects of living in this wonderful country.

A refreshing window into a different culture
By Tim Leffel
Tales from the Expat Harem is a lovingly produced book that probably gives a more rounded, fully fleshed-out view of Turkey than any book has managed before. It achieves this through narratives from 29 women who have made Turkey their home, either for a time or permanently, in locations scattered throughout the country. (A helpful map in the front shows each city or village where stories take place.) About half married a Turk. The others were in a relationship that didn't fly, were trying to figure out how to date there, or were trying to navigate life as a single in a country where being alone is seen as a bit odd and sad. This variety of place and experience allows a deeper look into the culture than usual.

The quality of the writing is uniformly high, despite the fact that many of the contributors were amateur writers coaxed--and carefully edited--by Ashman and Gökmen. The two editors each contribute a tale as well: Ashman with a description of her opulent, high-society Istanbul wedding, and Gökmen with a story about giving her Turkish language skills a workout as she takes a road trip with her American mother. For anyone who wants to get a real feel for what it's like to marry into a foreign culture, or to see how daily life works out while settling into another land, this is an engaging and masterful collection.

Insight into the Psyche of expats.
By Expat's Dad
As the father of an expat, I have often wondered just what it is that motivates one to leave home to live in foreign lands. This book gave me the first real insight into expat's awareness of their surroundings; those things that we who stayed home take for granted. There is a sense of mystery, awe and enchantment

with everyday living that I never realized before.

Advice to War Presidents: A Remedial Course in Statecraft, by Angelo Codevilla

“War presidents” are hardly exceptional in modern American history. To a greater or lesser extent, every president since Wilson has been a War President. Each has committed our country to the pursuit of peace, yet involved us in a seemingly endless series of wars—conflicts that the American foreign policy establishment has generally made worse. The chief reason, argues Angelo Codevilla in Advice to War Presidents, is that America’s leaders have habitually imagined the world as they wished it to be rather than as it is: They acted under the assumptions that war is not a normal tool of statecraft but a curable disease, and that all the world’s peoples wish to live as Americans do. As a result, our leaders have committed America to the grandest of ends while constantly subverting their own goals.

Employing many negative examples from the Bush II administration but also ranging widely over the last century, Advice to War Presidents offers a primer on the unchanging principles of foreign policy. Codevilla explains the essentials—focusing on realities such as diplomacy, alliances, war, economic statecraft, intelligence, and prestige, rather than on meaningless phrases like “international community,” “peacekeeping” and “collective security.” Not a realist, neoconservative, or a liberal internationalist, Codevilla follows an older tradition: that of historians like Thucydides, Herodotus, and Winston Churchill—writers who analyzed international affairs without imposing false categories.

Advice to War Presidents is an effort to talk our future presidents down from their rhetorical highs and get them to practice statecraft rather than wishful thinking, lest they give us further violence.

From Publishers Weekly
Writing explicitly for an audience that is already familiar with international affairs, Codevilla (The Character of Nations) draws on examples from ancient Greece through the Iraq War to provide a road map for future foreign policy in this accessible but didactic book. In a series of chapters arranged thematically around concepts that include the language of politics and the effectiveness of diplomacy, the author takes issue with the realist, liberal nationalist and neoconservative schools of thought and their ruinous counsel that dominates contemporary international politics, instead advocating a commonsense approach that emphasizes mastering the basic skills of diplomacy and statecraft. Codevilla appeals to the Monroe Doctrine and 19th-century American approaches to foreign affairs while condemning contemporary policy that he believes has failed to secure a lasting peace. Codevilla writes intelligently on topics as diverse as the affect of economic sanctions on Iraq in the 1990s and contemporary relations between Russia and Georgia, but his highly critical style can sometimes be abrasive. Excellent book with a few caveats
By Joseph M. Hennessey
I will not even pretend to be a military or diplomatic professional; after all, the book was not really only for [future] war presidents, or Professor Codevilla would have only sold a few to some egocentric wannabes. I am in the well-read amateur/highly interested citizen category, to which i think the book is pitched.

Usually, I think the best way to write a book review is to find the author's premise, and then assess whether s/he accomplished what s/he set out to do. On p. xii we read "Losing wars while winning battles is hard and rare. Yet American presidents and their advisers have managed to do just that for nearly a century. This requires explanation. This book is about dissecting ruinous counsel about war and peace. In the course of clearing rubbish, I hope to uncover sound principles and distill them into advice for future war presidents." On that scale, I would assert that the author completely succeeded in "dissecting" and "clearing," and uncovers and distills principles only slightly less successfully, probably because the future is so, well, unpredictable.

Note that Codevilla generally wrote about US foreign policy sorrows and joys for about the past century. Woodrow Wilson is one of his main bogeymen, and for good reason, getting us into all sorts of trouble for his quixotic quests, which were really being led by his wife and advisers at the end of his regime. But I wish Codevilla had more firmly pinned the tail on the elephant, William McKinley, for it was during his regime that the United States made a sharp U-turn from the wise, prudent 'no entanglements' uber-policy of Washington and successors. McKinley rushed us into the too-easy Spanish American War, largely because the Catholics in Cuba, Puerto Rico, and the Philippines needed to be Christianized/Protestantized, and we have been building ships, bases and a quasi-empire ever since.

I thoroughly agree with him that a truly realistic, as opposed to a materialist/realist foreign policy, would have a much more profound, sympathetic appreciation for the place of religion in international dynamics. Exactly because western Europe and the two coasts of the US have become largely secularized, means that we have a huge blind spot, a tin ear, in that regard, and have to study extra hard to comprehend the 3/4 of the world that is religious.

Underlying the Professor's 'advice' is a Machiavellian and Hobbsian philosophical foundation, unpleasant in interpersonal relations, but world politics ain't beanbag.

I enjoyed Codevilla's terse and sometimes pungent prose, and highly recommend this book.

Unconventional Wisdom
By Book Guy
Another eye opening book from Angelo Codevilla. His views on foreign policy are likely to be so different from what you normally hear on the Sunday morning shows that reading this book is a breath of fresh air.

Unfortunately, I can only give this book 4 stars because Professor Codevilla fails in his discussion of the "Surge" in Iraq. He essentially characterizes it as a continuation of the unrealistic occupation he has criticized since 2003. However, the Surge is actually a great example of exactly the sort of realism Codevilla advocates (as opposed to the sterile Scowcroftian variety). Al Qaeda in Iraq represented the Islamist movement in the Arab world, a force Codevilla has elsewhere recognized as a real response by the Islamic world to their corrupt secular regimes. As the mosque represents the only surviving element of civil society, and the Islamic world takes its religion seriously, the Islamist movement is readily comprehensible as a political force.

In Iraq, rather than wishing things were other than they were, we allied ourselves with the enemies of our enemies, who were more than willing to work with us to kill them. Unlike Codevilla's pretended epistemological uncertainty, in the real world, the ex-Baatthist and tribal levies in the Sons of Iraq (while perhaps not who we would want serving on our local school board) were clearly the enemies of our enemies, and more than willing to kill them. Our enemy, Al Qaeda in Iraq, by word and deed had made clear that they would fight to the death and commit any outrage to gain control of Iraq. Their atrocities had the effect of causing many in the Islamist movement to reconsider their approach. About this, everyone on the ground, Iraqi and American, was in agreement. At a certain point, you can't continue to discount the eyewitnesses.

Leaving aside the question of to what extent Saddam's regime had encouraged the Islamists to make war against America, by the time of the Surge, Saddam was long dead, and the Sons of Iraq were no more willing to fight for his cause than the Germans were for Hitler in 1948. The Islamists were our real enemies because, by the time of the Surge, they and only they had committed themselves by word and deed to the destruction of the West in general and America in particular. Who can argue with this? It is one thing to say the Islamist movement was infected and directed by the Arab and Pakistani intelligence services - it is another to suggest that the movement is without independent existence.

Similarly, his discussion of the Sadrists and Mahdi Army is inadequate, because these forces are clearly Iranian proxies. The Islamic Republic is the child of the Islamist movement, although Shia rather than Sunni, and successfully in control of the Iranian nation state. While the unwillingness to accept that we were at war with Iran can and should be criticized, what is the point of criticizing an alliance with those in Iraq who wanted to fight them? Similarly, Codevilla would agree that, if we are afraid Iraqi Shiites will fall under the control of Iran, this suggests that Iran is our real enemy and that we make war against them as well (which he advocates elsewhere in his book). Similarly, Al Qaeda in Iraq were also quite clearly funded by, and proxies for, Saudi Arabia and the Gulf emirates, who were using them to achieve their own objective of advancing Wahabist Islam in an effort to stabilize their own regimes and to keep jihadists from attacking Saudi princes. Like Laurent Murawiec, we can call on America to be realistic about friends and enemies in Saudi Arabia.

This realism about friends and enemies is precisely what Codevilla has called for in numerous other places in his work. That he discounts it in actual practice in Iraq unfortunately appears to be the Washington game of "not invented here": since Codevilla did not call for a significant change of counterinsurgency tactics, believing any such change futile and counterproductive, when it worked, he was unable to admit his own error. I think part of this has to do with his unfortunate tendency to read mainstream media sources like the NY Time uncritically, as if this were still a time when journalists could be trusted to report the news in the news sections of the paper, regardless of what was opined in the op-ed pages. Actually speaking to U.S. soldiers on the ground revealed a very different story.

Fascinating - more than a little bit frightening as well!
By The Reviewer Formerly Known as Kurt Johnson
I was first introduced to Angelo Codevilla through his American Spectator article, America's Ruling Class. I wanted to know more about the man, so I checked with my library and found a copy of his book, Advice to War Presidents. In this fascinating book, the author points out that since the Wilson administration just about every U.S. President has had to lead the country during a time of war. According to Mr. Codevilla, the U.S. diplomats were partially responsible for the war, and they inevitably botched it - losing the peace that the military leaders had won. In this book, the author examines the history of America statecraft in the twentieth and early twenty-first centuries, and then he goes on to show what correct statecraft should look like.

Overall, I found this to be a fascinating book. It's more than a little bit frightening to learn just how out of touch with reality our diplomats and other leaders are, and how their failures have made our position in the world worse and worse over the years. This is a very interesting book, and I hope that American leaders present and future read it...for all our sakes!

This is a new type of book. It’s a visual book with 6 videos.
I have learned photography and retouching with the use of tutorials and find that this is a very powerful method of teaching.

We are going to explore the retouch landscapes with Lightroom 4 with 6 different photos starting from the raw files to finished photo.

While teaching I try to follow two rules:

  • No technical terms explained with technical words, but with simple English.
  • No theory, practical and visual examples only.
  • Here are some of the reviews that I got on this book :

Best LR4 training, well-worth the price - I've been a Lightroom user since LR2, and until I bought this, I wasn't getting my money's worth out of Lightroom. Whether you're a beginner, or have some experience, you will learn a lot from this ebook (and similarly for its companion, Photoshop CS6 Quickstart, which I also bought). Highly recommended.

Excellent - I've just completed the 7 videos and this app has been excellent.Well presented, no over complicated instructions just practical examples. This improved my lightroom 4 skills and understanding significantly.Buy it.

This is GREAT!!! - I purchased this the same time I got LR4 and I love it. Worth the money.

I love to create and share technics, and I hope this Travel Photos Retouching visual book will help you improve your retouching skills and help create astounding photography.

Sometimes hard to know what a book really is like until you buy it, so the $10 purchase wouldn't have been a big loss if it didn't work out. But it did, in spades! Transformers: Autocracy is the origin story of Orion Pax, or as he is better known, Optimus Prime. In the first six issues which were available on NetGalley for review, we learn of Prime's history as a leader of a counter-terror strike team who were tasked with several mission in order to thwart dissident Decpticons. With each mission, Orion Pax discovers new information on the true agenda of the Autobot leader, Zeta Prime and the Autocracy. In the end, it is Orion Pax who has to decide which faction, Autocracy or Dissident, is truly worth fighting for.

I really enjoyed Transformers: Autocracy. For anyone who follows the Transformers lore, you already know it a vast universe that spans decades through cartoons, movies, video games, and action figures. One of the most fascinating parts of the universe is learning about Cybertron, the wars the Transformers had to endure, and of course how our characters became the totally awesome robots in disguise they are today. Who was Optimus before he was a Prime? Were he and Megatron once Allies fighting for the same cause? All this and more will be revealed in Autocracy. And yes my friends, it's a turbulent adventure no true Transformers fan will want to miss!

Some of our favorite Transformers make an appearance throughout the story, Ironhide, Bumblebee, Soundwave, Prowl, Ratbat, Starscream are just few. I was definitely feeling nostalgic from seeing their faces inked onto the pages and hearing Ironhide's sarcastic comments. From time to time I could feel myself screaming, "I had that action figure. Oh and that one too!" Transformers: Autocracy is very reminiscent of the original Transformers from 80's, from the tone in their voices to the intricately way they were drawn. I loved, loved, LOVED every minute of it!

Overall, if you are a fan of the esteemed series then Transformers: Autocracy is definitely for you. Generations old and young will love the action, destruction, and mayhem in this comic. For those of you who missed the Transformers boat don't worry. Autocracy is easy to follow and gives you just enough information so don't feel overwhelmed by the limitless universe.

This is a fantastic story written before "The Great War". Young Optimus here is not a Prime yet, nor does he know he ever will be. He simply goes by Orion Pax. He distrust the Senate, but follows orders like a good soldier. You'll witness him become a Prime, side with Megatron, fight Megatron and the rest is "history".

I enjoyed this book, and think the writing is top notch. The art is also fantastic but sometimes things are a bit hard to make out since it can be quite dark. You can probably sit and read this in about 1 hour straight, cause I did. This was released as a bi-weekly digital comic and I am truly happy it made it to print. I'm a huge fan of Transformers, and this was one of the better tales written recently. Do yourself a favor and get this book. You'll enjoy it.

An interesting take on Optimus' backstory...
    By Joe Edmondson
Where to begin? How about we start by saying "whoa"! From what I gathered the story is sort of a loose sequel to "Megatron Origins", the Decepticon forces has taken root and waging war on the current Autobot government. The planet of Cybertron has started to become a dystopia and Orion Pax and his fellow Autobots are left to police the chaos and bring peace to the people who hate them as much as the Decepticons. Told as if it were a gritty Clint Eastwood-esque police movie, the artwork carries the same dark and gloomy vibe as the story does, giving the readers the sense of despair the characters are feeling. And I love the Optimus/Hot Rod relationship the writers threw in, taking queues from the 1986 animated movie. Definitely worth reading!

Doña Barbara: A Novel, by Rómulo Gallegos

Rómulo Gallegos is best known for being Venezuela’s first democratically elected president. But in his native land he is equally famous as a writer responsible for one of Venezuela’s literary treasures, the novel Doña Barbara. Published in 1929 and all but forgotten by Anglophone readers, Doña Barbara is one of the first examples of magical realism, laying the groundwork for later authors such as Gabriel García Márquez and Mario Vargas Llosa.

Following the epic struggle between two cousins for an estate in Venezuela, Doña Barbara is an examination of the conflict between town and country, violence and intellect, male and female. Doña Barbara is a beautiful and mysterious woman—rumored to be a witch—with a ferocious power over men. When her cousin Santos Luzardo returns to the plains in order to reclaim his land and cattle, he reluctantly faces off against Doña Barbara, and their battle becomes simultaneously one of violence and seduction. All of the action is set against the stunning backdrop of the Venezuelan prairie, described in loving detail. Gallegos’s plains are filled with dangerous ranchers, intrepid cowboys, and damsels in distress, all broadly and vividly drawn. A masterful novel with an important role in the inception of magical realism, Doña Barbara is a suspenseful tale that blends fantasy, adventure, and romance.

Hailed as “the Bovary of the llano” by Larry McMurtry in his new foreword to this book, Doña Barbarais a magnetic and memorable heroine, who has inspired numerous adaptations on the big and small screens, including a recent television show that aired on Telemundo.

    Review
“Remarkable. . . . From its first pages it reveals . . . why it made Gallegos famous. . . . If Señor Gallegos is one-half as good a President as he is a novelist, Venezuela is a lucky land.”

    (New York Times)

“An exciting heroic tale of the life of Venezuelan plainsmen, master and peons, ranchers and cowboys and horse thieves.”

    (New Republic)

Unlike the austere plain I grew up on, Gallegos’s llano is steamy, tumescent, lust-driven. Dona Barbara may have been a kind of anticipation of Eva Peron. She owns a great ranch, the Altimara, but must struggle constantly to keep it. She is, in her way, a tragic heroine, seeking to attract a decent lover, while giving herself day and night to very coarse lovers indeed.    She is, however, very vividly drawn, a Bovary of the llano.    In the prose one will now and then hear Conradian echoes, and certainly there are echos of Gallegos in Garcia Marquez, Vargas Lhosa, and Fuentes.    Let us hope this attractive reprint will bring Romolo Gallegos the readers he deserves.
    (Larry McMurtry from the Foreword)
