A pleasure

I love reading about Emily Carr, and this is the first biographical book I read. While it does begin in her childhood, it concetrates on her time in the U.K, studying around the turn of the century. To read other parts in more detail you might need to read Klee Wyck or The Book of Small. Or just buy the book of all her writing in one.
I really enjoy her honest style of writing, the way she saw things and said what was on her mind. She must have driven her more proper sisters nuts. She's a wonderful example of what you can do if you put your mind to it, especially as a woman back in that day and age. A great read whether you're an artist or just interested in autobiographies.

The autobiography of one of Canada's historical treasures

I read this book because I hoped it might give me some insight into the mind of Emily Carr. At the time, I was doing a semester-long independent research project on Carr as part of a college-level class concerning world-famous women artists. Through the project, I'd become extremely intrigued by Carr; I'd never heard of her before. I soon learned that she is an icon of Canadian cultural history; virtually every child in Canada knows about her and many children are still required to read her book "Klee Wyck," which is an authentic early primary resource about the First Nation peoples of the Canadian Pacific Northwest.

Before I'd read this autobiography, I'd already read a number of biographies and research articles about Carr. I'd found a wealth of secondary research material about this important Canadian artist in my university library. Despite already finishing a few biographies, I knew that it would be invaluable to read about Carr's life in her own words. So, I bought this book and read it even though I already knew a great deal about the details of Carr's life as it has been studied and analyzed by scholars.

When the autobiography arrived, I didn't know what to expect, but I was very pleasantly surprised. I did not have to read the book thoroughly or completely--in fact, I set out to only read bits and pieces here and there--but I ended up reading the whole thing, beginning to end, because I found the work to be hauntingly familiar yet rather otherworldly. It took me on an odd journey into the mind of a singularly unique woman. I knew how her life would unfold, but I was mesmerized by her gentle and honest way of unveiling her own life story.

I've studied a lot of psychology, psychiatry, and neurology, and I was keen to figure out some kind of amateur diagnosis that might partially explain Carr's odd behaviors and unique talents. Some of her biographers had attempted this; but I failed. Carr is just a marvelous enigma! She probably possesses a mixture on many medical, physical, cultural, and environmental characteristics that set her apart, but also help to make her the odd duck and famous creative genius that she was.

I highly recommend this work to anyone who is charmed by Carr's art or who is interested in delving deeper into the psyche and life history of one of Canada's most famous historical characters.

In retrospect, I believe I made a mistake by starting my study of Emily Carr by reading biographies and scholarly articles. There is nothing like excellent primary source material, and Emily Carr's own autobiography is truthful and captivating. If you want to learn about Carr, the only work you really need is this autobiography. Through her own words, you can catch the essence and soul of this famous multitalented idiosyncratic woman--a woman considered to be one of Canada's historical treasures.

Story of an interesting artist

Despite all odds-- cultural, familial, financial-- Emily Carr became an artist without compromise. She is a very good writer and very insightful. A good book for all who enjoy reading artist's autobiographies, but especially for artists who are now also struggling to maintain their visions.

Sprightly, sexy comedy!

If you are a fan of Kasey Michaels, you will be particularly delighted with this humorous sequel to Silhouette Romance #808 Lion on the Prowl. Max Rafferty, the hero of the previous book, is the cousin of Colin Rafferty, the very British hero of this book. Julia Sutherland, the heroine of Lion on the Prowl, is the best friend and business partner of Holly Hollis, the heroine of this book.
Holly finds herself totally in charge for the very first time of a huge New York fashion show, because her partner, Julia Sutherland Rafferty, a major fashion designer, insists on staying home with her sick five-month-old son. All is controlled chaos, and Holly is proud of her management, until one of the male models doesn't show up. Holly is desperate. This is a show for bridal gowns with top models, and there is no way one of the "brides" can walk out unescorted by a "groom." When the gorgeous male model finally shows at the last second, Holly ignores her strong attraction for him and orders him to drop his pants instantly and get into his tuxedo.
Colin Rafferty has just flown in from Europe and has stopped by to see the fashion show of his new cousin-in-law, Julia, when he's accosted by a stunning little dynamo asking him to strip. It doesn't occur to Colin to say "no" to a woman who fascinates him and is obviously in distress, and he complies, in the process saving the day for the fashion show of his new relative, Julia.
This cute meet sets the stage for a wild romantic ride between two attractive, sympathetic protagonists. There are many funny scenes, and many poignant ones, as well. All of the characters, including the secondary ones, are vivid; the pace is quick, and the emotional depth is great. I found the motivation for Colin's temporary masquerade as a male model well done--quite an accomplishment, since anytime deception is used as a plot device, it can be very tricky to pull off. I also thought Michaels did a very good job with the additional, delicate feat of using the characters, Julia and Max, from the previous book in the series. They very much helped the story, and never upstaged the current hero and heroine. As part of the Silhouette Romance line, this book is, of course, G-rated, with no sexual consummation and only a few heated kisses. But the sexual chemistry is such that it still remains a very exciting romance with lots of sexual tension.

There seemed no escape from Colin's carefully outlined plan to befriend, befuddle and betroth her. But where were his words of love...and how could an ordinary gal like Holly believe anything this sexy-as-sin man declared? Yet, something within her wanted to take the ultimate chance that she could bring this bachelor to heel.
Cute. That's the word for this story. Everybody's cute. Or gorgeous. No sex, but you don't expect it when you read this ROMANCE series. And yes, there are some funny parts, but I just found this one to be too cute.

Silhouette Romance # 1552 - November 2001

Holly's filling in for her best friend and boss, organizing the highly televised bridal fashion show. Much to her panic, she's missing a male model for a groom. At the last minute, in walks the most gorgeous man Holly's ever seen, and of course, Holly grabs him and starts to undress him to put him in his tux. Collin's not sure what's happening, but he's enjoying the little dynamo's undressing attentions. He's just stopping by to give support to his cousin-in-law (Holly's boss) but finds himself too intrigued to speak up and say that he's not a model. The show is a huge success, and afterward Collin insists Holly join him for a bite to eat, all the while keeping his true identity to himself. It isn't until the next day that Holly discovers that Collin isn't a model and she's hurt that Collin would play that trick on her. Collin tries to make it up to Holly and accidentally blurts out that he's decided that he's going to marry her. This sends Holly running, and Collin fast on her trail.

This is a very fun, witty read. You fall in love with the characters right from that first "drop your pants" moment when Holly undresses Collin for the fashion show. I loved the way Holly kept Collin hopping, and Collin had Holly all twisted up in knots.

If you are looking for easy reading this is not it. The information is there, however, it is NOT at all at a glance. You have to be a scientist to understand a lot of it. If you are a student and doing a research paper, save your money and buy something easier to understand.

A very worthwhile book

Fodor has written a book to be used, not simply read. The first part deals with the theory and physical facts of solar drying, while the second tells how to make a dryer. Next comes a section on preparing food to dry, followed by a brief group of recipes and, finally, some very handy appendices. Fodor writes clearly and handles details well.

Killer Book, a MUST HAVE for the Homemaker/Homesteader!

If you do any kind of homemaking, preserving, growing of your own food, etc., then you absolutely need to get this book! This will give you low-cost and realistic way to preserve your food naturally and in a way that keeps it tasting great! The step-by-step instructions for building the author's food dryer are top-notch and easy to follow, even for the non-mechanically inclined.

My only wish is that the author had included plans for the other food dryers mentioned, though a quick Google will supply this, so it's not really necessary.

Excellent collection by English author. Stories with twists you can sense, and others that come out of nowhere. An excellent read I read before bed as each story doesn't take too long and you can pick up after a few days without missing a beat.

Kind of like a "Special Forces for Dummies"

I would recommend this book to people who do not have a very good understanding of US Special Forces. For those of us who have a deeper knowledge of the Special Forces that our country employs, I would not recommend this book.
The book reads well and includes chapters on the Army Rangers, Navy SEALs, Air Force Special Operations (Combat Controllers and Pararescue Jumpers), Army Special Forces (Green Berets), Delta Force, Marine Force Recon, Army Airborne, Army 10th Mountain Division, Coast Guard Special Operations, and CIA Paramilitary Forces.
The inclusion of the Coast Guard "Special Operations" is a bit suspect as a special operations group, but that chapter is enlightening and informative.
The book does not go into very much detail on any of the special operations forces so I would only recommend this book to someone who wants a very general overview.
One of the major gripes that I had with the book (besides being overly simplistic) is on page 188. In the chapter about the 10th Mountain Division, the book mentions how a "young Lieutenant Bob Dole was badly wounded. After a couple years in a hospital he would go on to be vice president of the United States..." Umm, am I missing something here or was I asleep when Bob Dole was the Vice President?
Anyway, if you are a stranger to the world of US Special Forces, this is a decent book to get started. However, if one already has a pretty decent grasp of the subject, I would recommend looking elsewhere.

Pretty Good Starter

I purchased this book just expecting a general overview and thats what I got. If just want to see an overview of all of America's special forces, this is the book for. If you're looking for lots of detail, find something else (recommend Tom Clancy's Special Forces, Airborne, and Marine)

This is a great book for any intelligent person who wants to get an overview and some background on the many branches of US Special Forces. Southworth is a lively and enthusiastic writer, and working with Tanner (who also contributed to Southworth's first book "Great Raids in History") seems to suit him. These are historians who understand the Special Forces mindset, and they go far beyond cartoonish conceptions to reveal the dedication and difficult tasks of modern commandos. The inclusion of the US Coast Guard and CIA Paramilitary units is one indicator of the depth to which they have plumbed this subject. Much better than Clancy and his editorial team. A highly recommended and high-spirited book, and quite timely as well.

John M. Robertson, PhD, is in private practice and Director of Psychological Services for the Professional Renewal Center in Lawrence, Kansas. He has many years of experience working almost exclusively with authoritarian men.

Buy it. Read it. Learn.

It is rare to find good advice. When it is relevant, effective, grounded in research and expressed with deep compassion born of years of rich clinical experience germane to the ideas being offered, it is a treasure. Even more astonishing, when that advice helps to understand how to address the anguish of men who themselves inflict it on others and does so step by step by step we can only say, "Thank you". That thanks will be but the beginning of a transformation in the way we practice. It will take time to digest these ideas. It will take patience to learn and to impliment. It will take years to fully understand how the lives of these men can be transformed. But, if one diligently reads and applies the strategies that Dr. Robertson outlines the results will change how you think about the work that you do. It will have a profound impact on how you think of yourself as an agent of change. Becoming a compassionate and effective clinician who understands "the work" will offer a platform from which change in yourself and those with whom you connect can emerge. To illustrate the efffectiveness of the approaches that Dr. Robertson so clearly describes, he paints a composite of those we worked with as team mates, collaborators and friends. One such man, who remains anonymous, was at the end of his rope. He was about to be publicly disgraced with no real reason to believe he would ever practice medicine again. His life was in a shambles and his marriage and family were about to disintegrate. Through the process Dr. Robertson describes, that man's life has been more than restored. He is now a published poet who has achieved serenity and is transformed in every facet of his being. He, of course, became the agent of his own change but it was through the process Dr. Robertson describes. As a published author of outcome research for both psychiatric inpatient treatment and outpatient individual therapy I can attest to the power of Dr. Robertson's advice. It is solid, is is clear and it will bring about change in which you can invest as a 'new way' to work because it helps and does so profoundly. As for myself, I can say with deep conviction that I use the tools that Dr. Robertson describes everyday and see first hand how lives are changed. As I sit in the 'therapy room' as a facilitator for group therapy, I see 'folks' look up and refer to what Dr. Robertson has made clear for them in charts they can examine to learn the language of emotion. He has given them a language to use in the group. I see how that changes the "conversation" in ways that are repeatedly helpful. Those who read and apply Dr. Robertson's ideas will discover that impact as well, over and over.

A genuinely new insight

For professionals who work with authoritarian men (cops, military, corrections among many other traditionally male career categories) this will be a valuable resource full of new ways to think about the age-old challenges they bring to the therapy room. For everyone else, it provides a compassionate look at how these difficult men came to be the way they are. We all know these men: we have worked for, or with, them and often we have hated them or been afraid of them. While offering no excuses for the damage they've done, Dr. Robertson offers understanding that will at least increase your tolerance and guide you in knowing how to handle them.

Very readable, very useful...

Dr. Robertson has produced an important and eminently useful volume for the treatment of authoritarian men. From the perspective of an educator with a background in men's studies research, I find it to be something that would fill a crucial gap in graduate level training.

Drawing on a wide variety of sources extending beyond clinical psychology and making no assumptions about the reader's background in gender studies, the author begins by outlining the historical context, and etiology of authoritarian personality types. From there, he moves on to clinical composite cases that reveal vivid details of the inner world of such men, doing so with rare respect and compassion. I see that as particularly important for students, since this population can provoke the strongest counter-transference reactions in those with the least experience.

Another unique element is the chapter on assessment. The author places the process in an interpersonal context that can enhance the therapist-client relationship rather than detract from it. He does so by emphasizing collaboration in the process, rather than making the client feel exposed and judged. Also notable in this chapter is the deft handling of religion which looms large in the lives of such men, yet is so often neglected or misunderstood by clinicians.

The remaining chapters take the reader through multi-modal treatment approaches, highlighting key defenses with suggestions for how to manage them (for example, re-framing defense mechanisms as "blocks to self-understanding."). In doing so, he answers that persistent question that supervisors must address with every anxious and frustrated supervisee at some point: "What do I do now?"

When making choices for course reading, instructors try to identify resources that will serve as in-absentia teachers. Very often, we have to settle for those that are the least dry and confusing, rather than the most understandable and useful. With "Tough Guys and True Believers" Dr. Robertson has most certainly accomplished the latter. Written in a voice that is both authoritative, yet conversational, it is vastly more readable and useful than texts typical of graduate training programs. As such, I intend to make it required reading for practicum and internship students, as well as a primary text for a course on psychotherapy with men
