Assuming a Body: Transgender and Rhetorics of Materiality, by Gayle Salamon

We believe we know our bodies intimately& mdash;that their material reality is certain and that this certainty leads to an epistemological truth about sex, gender, and identity. By exploring and giving equal weight to transgendered subjectivities, however, Gayle Salamon upends these certainties. Considering questions of transgendered embodiment via phenomenology (Maurice Merleau-Ponty), psychoanalysis (Sigmund Freud and Paul Ferdinand Schilder), and queer theory, Salamon advances an alternative theory of normative and non-normative gender, proving the value and vitality of trans experience for thinking about embodiment.

Salamon suggests that the difference between transgendered and normatively gendered bodies is not, in the end, material. Rather, she argues that the production of gender itself relies on a disjunction between the "felt sense" of the body and an understanding of the body's corporeal contours, and that this process need not be viewed as pathological in nature. Examining the relationship between material and phantasmatic accounts of bodily being, Salamon emphasizes the productive tensions that make the body both present and absent in our consciousness and work to confirm and unsettle gendered certainties. She questions traditional theories that explain how the body comes to be& mdash;and comes to be made one's own& mdash;and she offers a new framework for thinking about what "counts" as a body. The result is a groundbreaking investigation into the phenomenological life of gender.

Review

Engaging with a broad range of audiences, Salamon makes a convincing case that the lens offered by transgendered embodiment and subjectivity reconfigures entrenched theoretical positions in gender studies, psychoanalysis, and continental philosophy.

(Penelope Deutscher, Northwestern University)

Assuming a Body makes a stunning intervention, by way of phenomenology, into contemporary theories of the body. Situating transgenderism within 'rhetorics of materiality,' Gayle Salamon crafts a supple theoretical framework capable of accounting for both the theory and the lived experience of alternative genders. This book will undoubtedly bridge the gap between transgender studies and critical theory, and, in the process, will open up new ways of understanding what it means to be embodied.

(J. Halberstam, author of Female Masculinity and In A Queer Time and Place: Transgender Bodies, Subcultural Lives)

The 'next big thing' for anyone interested in critically theorizing about contemporary transgender phenomena, Assuming a Body squarely addresses the debates and polemics thrown up during the field's fiery formative decade in the 1990s-the relationships between trans, queer, and feminist theories; performativity, discursivity, and materiality; and psychoanalysis and its discontents-and powerfully hits these balls back across the net. Salamon's next-generation (re)iteration of these intellectually vital arguments forges stronger connections between trans studies and current reappraisals of affective or phenomenological approaches to embodiment, as well as to the post-9/11 turn toward political economy and the critique of neoliberal governmentality. Scholars across a wide range of disciplines will be citing, siding with, and taking aim at this important book for years to come.

(Susan Stryker, Indiana University)

For those who enjoy a challenge, this book rewards with its timely, thought-provoking examination of the body, and the intersection of transgender psychology and critical theory.

(Rachel Pepper Curve)

Salomon's book achieves to be theoretically rigorous on issues of gender and embodiment and to acknowledge the specificity and reality of transgender experience in a way that challenges the reader to rethink conceptions of sex and gender at their cutting edge.

(Metapsychology)

...this original contribution reconfigures old questions and issues and engages with new ones, ultimately inviting us all to reconsider what it means to be embodied.

(Somatechnics)

...an important resource and instigation for future work along some very promising lines of thought.

(Tamsin Lorraine PhiloSOPHIA)

Review

In this remarkable book, Gayle Salamon makes original use of the notion of the bodily schema (from phenomenology) and the bodily ego (from psychoanalysis) to argue in the most persuasive and deft terms that the body's materiality assumes a form through a schema that provides for its articulation. Unlike other work in this burgeoning and important field, Salamon's book focuses on the intersubjective construction of transgender, on how 'address' functions in transsexual self-production, and how the gaze of the Other-anticipated and solicited-works to 'build' a bodily schema. Salamon's work has a singular lucidity and philosophical elegance that is rare to find in cultural theory and offers incisive philosophical reflection on what transgender implies for the materiality of the body itself.

(Judith Butler, University of California, Berkeley)

A very original project that marks a major contribution to contemporary literature on transpeople and trans identity. Gayle Salamon provides an excellent critical survey of existing scholarship and offers a new, compelling account of the importance and diversity of non-normative bodily experiences.

(Gail Weiss, George Washington University)

Interdisciplinary trans-theory for academics that don't get it.
By W
As a transwoman, books about transgender theory typically make my skin crawl with the anticipation of the author's short-sighted and prejudicial stance. We get beat up alot by our critics and they come in all ilks, academics included. Gayle Salamon takes a somewhat meandering perspective using the phenomenolgy of Merleau-Ponty (not Hegel) and some psychoanalytic theory from Freud to critically deconstruct the sometimes polemical views of others on the subject of trans-embodiment and meaning. I found the book to be a bit uneven - it sometimes resorts to the linguistic density of Judith Butler and at other times (especially from chapter four on) is perfectly understandable and coherent. Salamon appears to use critical theory and the dialectic to extract appearance from essence ala Horkheimer and Adorno, surgically removing the masks of bias from the face of existing separatist and essentialist theories. The book does introduce some interesting concepts and arguements which hopefully will stimulate new thinking about what trans-people mean, especially to feminists who refuse to take responsibility for our existence. I do think that the author places an over-emphasis on sexuality and sometimes drifts into metaphysical territory that exists on the plane of a dream-scape. Education and ideas in support of the gender-possible are always appreciated, although the paradox lies in watching a debate unfold over our right to exist, something that we already take for granted. I do recommend this book with the single caveat that it isn't specifically about trans-folks but a serious theoretical and philosophical persepctive regarding the subject(s). For a primer on being transgendered look to Kate Bornstein.

incredibly lucid and radical
By A Feldman
I disagree with some of the criticisms in the prior review since this is one of the most clear-headed, lucid, and radical books I've read on this subject in the last years. For those of us who have worked in the trans community for years, this book actually gives us so much of what we have been needing. It shows that what we are about has everything to do with theory, and that we need theory and philosophy for our lives. There are so few books that really rock you in this way, and Gayle Salamon's extremely smart readings of Freud and phenomenology and the body image open me to new worlds and make me see that intellectual work is really nourishment for the soul - which is the body after all. Here is a really perspicacious and radical author who thinks carefully about what it means to be a body in this world and how we become one. How rare is that!

... for a "Sexuality and Culture" topical seminar and thoroughly enjoyed the content
By Psy_ghoul
I purchased this book for a "Sexuality and Culture" topical seminar and thoroughly enjoyed the content. We spent on average a week in the class per book so not a lot of time was spent with each text. However we were able to discuss quite a bit and apply the concepts to daily life and many of the issues surrounding transgender politics, primarily the issue of bathrooms since this is the hot topic at this time. Overall an excellent book that discusses various topics surrounding trans-bodies and what it means to be transgendered (as approached from many different angles). Salamon's writing is clear and to the point but at times things get a little muddled and becomes a little difficult to understand at times. Some of the chapters read easily while others are reminiscent of Judith Butler (not a bad thing). Salamon's book opened my eyes to many things that I had not previously considered and I would recommend this book to any person who wants to expand their understanding of the materiality of the transgendered body and deeper concepts to ponder when creating a discourse with others.

More Ninja action from GI Joe
By 1AnimeFan
POSSIBLE SPOILERS

This book continues and possibly concludes the Blue Ninja storyline from the prior volume. I know that the 90's GI Joe comics from Marvel got pretty heavy into ninjas in the final issues, but I have really been enjoying this storyline, and the series as a whole. Larry Hama has been moving forward while giving long time fans enough easter eggs to stay interested.

This storyline is nicely self contained, but for the full picture I'd recommend prior volumes. I have already pre-ordered the next volume and am looking forward to it.

A Cobra massacre
By Kid Kyoto
In this book the cyborgs with the unfortunate name 'Blue Ninjas' (more ninjas?) turn their sights on Cobra's secret base in the coastal town of Broca Beach. The Joes must form an uneasy alliance against this common foe.

This was a good book. It really was. The plot summary sounds pretty dull but as always it's the delivery that matters. The cyborg Blue Ninjas (oh how I hate that name) are a natural extension of the established technology of the GI comics and in this book they quickly make both Cobra and GI Joe look obsolete. They're nasty, they're ruthless and they're scary.

The battle of Broca Beach is bloody and ugly and once again shows off Hama's strengths. He has no qualms about destroying an established setting and moving on though it's hard to see just how Cobra will recover after this battle.

In the final story the Joes go to San Diego's Comicon, it's a cute story filled with comic in-jokes but also sets up the next big plot.

I was worried in the last volume that Hama was falling into a rut but with this book he's convinced me there's lots of good stuff to come.

I highly recommend this to all Respiratory Therapy students studying for their board exams or even Respiratory Therapists who just want a refresher. The book goes over everything that was taught during Respiratory Therapy school. Passed all my exams on the first try just studying this book.

Great resource for taking your exams!!!!!
    By Kimberly
This book was a wonderful resource to take the first exam (CRT), the CD-Rom was right on the money for studying off the computer. The information from this book was correct and precise. It was what the NBRC is looking for as far as answers are concerned. I passed my CRT exam with an 87%, I will be taking my RRT exam sometime this August and I will definitely use this book as a study guide. I hope all success in taking your tests.
    Good Luck

    Do NOT Buy This Book!
    By AggieMaru
When I purchased this book, I intended for it to supplement the knowledge that I gained during the three years attaining a bachelors in Respiratory Care; instead, I spent much of my time thinking, "that's no correct" and looking up "correct" information from the internet and other respiratory texts.

This book is FULL of WRONG information, incorrectly answered practice questions, typos, pre/post chapter study questions that are misplaced in chapters before the material covered by the question has been discussed, information NEVER discussed is tested in the "Practice RRT" exam at the back of the book...the list goes on and on.

I implore you to save your money and NOT purchase this book. I myself plan to contact the publisher to receive a refund because it is one thing to have a few mistakes in a book but this text goes above and beyond in the mistakes department where it is a TOTAL waste of your valuable study time.

If you are looking for a good RRT & CRT review go to the NBRC webpage for FREE and get the complete content matrixes - then look up the material you feel that you need to be refreshed with in your Egans Fundamental of Respiratory Care or the Essentials of Respiratory Care text. This is preparing you much more for the actual exams. Also, if you are looking for practice exams the NBRC webpage also has FREE CRT, RRT and Clinical Sims exams that will show you EXACTLY how the test real test will be.

GOOD LUCK to all future RT's & remember DO NOT BUY "Respiratory Care Exam Review: Review for the Entry Level and Advanced Exams by Gary Persing"

“The only way this war is going to end is if the American people truly understand what we have done in their name.”—Kelly Dougherty, executive director of Iraq Veterans Against the War

In spring 2008, inspired by the Vietnam-era Winter Soldier hearings, Iraq Veterans Against the War gathered veterans to expose war crimes in Afghanistan and Iraq. Here are the powerful words, images, and documents of this historic gathering, which show the reality of life in Afghanistan and Iraq.

Iraq Veterans Against the War argues that well-publicized incidents of American brutality like the Abu Ghraib prison scandal and the massacre of an entire family of Iraqis in the town of Haditha are not the isolated incidents perpetrated by “a few bad apples,” as many politicians and military leaders have claimed. They are part of a pattern, the group says, of “an increasingly bloody occupation.”

"Here is the war as it should be reported, seeing the pain, refusing to sanitize an unprovoked attack that has killed over one million people.  All over America are victims who have returned from this conflict with hideous wounds -- wounds that turn the lives of the entire family upside down. And the American people are not seeing this.  Until now.

"Winter Soldier, an enormously important project of Iraq Veterans Against the War, cuts this debacle to the bone, exposing details hard to come by and even harder to believe.  This is must reading for patriots who have already begun the effort to insure that this never happens again."

    --Phil Donahue

"Winter Soldier makes us feel the pain and despair endured by those who serve in a military stretched to the breaking point by stop-loss policies, multiple combat tours, and a war where the goals and the enemies keep shifting ... [and] also make[s] us admire the unbreakable idealism and hope of those men and women who still believe that by speaking out they can make things better both for themselves and for those who come after them."--San Francisco Chronicle

Formed in the aftermath of the US invasions of Iraq and Afghanistan, Iraq Veterans Against the War (IVAW) was founded in 2004 to give those who have served in the military since September 11, 2001, a way to come together and speak out against an unjust, illegal, and unwinnable war. Today, IVAW has over seven hundred members in forty-nine states, Washington, DC, Canada, and on military bases overseas.

    Well written, important historical book
    By Dahr Jamail
Aaron Glantz, and Iraq Veterans Against the War, have written an extremely important historical document of the Winter Soldier hearings. Here are a few of my comments from a review I did of the book for Inter Press Service (IPS):

Aside from the Iraqi people, nobody knows what the U.S. military is doing in Iraq better than the soldiers themselves. A new book gives readers vivid and detailed accounts of the devastation the U.S. occupation has brought to Iraq, in the soldiers' own words.

"Winter Soldier Iraq and Afghanistan: Eyewitness Accounts of the Occupation," published by Haymarket Books Tuesday, is a gut-wrenching, historic chronicle of what the U.S. military has done to Iraq, as well as its own soldiers.

Four days of searing testimony, witnessed by this writer, is consolidated into the book, which makes for a difficult read. One page after another is filled with devastating stories from the soldiers about what is being done in Iraq.

Everything from the taking of "trophy" photos of the dead, to torture and slaughtering of civilians is included.

"We're trying to build a historical record of what continues to happen in this war and what the war is really about," Glantz told IPS.

Glantz admits that it would be difficult for the average U.S. citizen to read the book, and believes it is important to keep in mind while doing so what it took for the veterans to give this historic testimony.

"They could have been heroes, but what they are doing here is even more heroic -- which is telling the truth," Glantz told IPS. "They didn't have to come forward. They chose to come forward."

It's The Truth. Deal With It
    By Argus
The Americans have committed many war crimes in Afghanistan. They say that since the Taliban does lots of bad things, we can too. No civilized person, or army for that matter, should stoop to the level of the Taliban. I thought American soldiers were supposed to be professionals, but I guess I was wrong. This war is immoral and many of the Americans fighting it have done unspeakable things to Afghan civilians. I know because I was there for two tours. This book is highly recommended,

    An essential, worthy book
    By Charles Platt
In their own words, plainly and without anger or exaggeration, veterans decribe what they lived through, and how it changed them. The positive message I derive from this book is that everyday people can reaffirm their ethical orientation and human decency despite being subjected to an appalling process of dehumanization by the armed forces.

    This book is essential reading.

    From School Library Journal
Grade 7 Up—Buzzing with action, Resurrection will appeal to Batman's fans, but it is not a good starting point for readers unfamiliar with the series history. Ra's Al Ghul has miraculously returned from what was thought to be a fiery demise. His features badly burned, Ra's needs a completely new host body to continue his evil ways. His candidate is bratty Damian-his grandson, who happens to be the child of Batman and Talia, Ra's Al Ghul's daughter. When Damian is eventually captured by his grandfather, Batman and Ra's face off to determine the boy's fate. The artwork varies with each chapter. Violence is depicted, and images of women may strike some as objectification. The exaggerated, comic-book-style illustrations are consistently well done, although characters are rendered differently by each artist, a fact that may throw off some readers. The writing also fluctuates with each chapter, from standard heroic platitudes to tongue-in-cheek sarcasm. This is not an essential purchase, but it will be welcomed by readers with knowledge of the characters and backstory.—Travis Jonker, Dorr Elementary School, MI

    From Booklist
Although a relative latecomer, Ra’s al Ghul has become one of the most prominent Batman archvillains, as attested by his pivotal role in the movie Batman Begins. This multipart saga of the criminal mastermind’s return from the dead is intended as the ultimate Ra’s epic but doesn’t quite measure up because of its disjointedness. Originally spread over four different Batman-related monthly comics, the story was produced by a quintet of writers, whose round-Robin (and -Batman, and -Nightwing) approach shows. Eight primary artists of varying talent don’t help cohesiveness, either. Still, Bat-fans will find plenty to enjoy in the continent-spanning epic. --Gordon Flagg

    Father-Son Relationships (spoilers)
    By Jose Ibanez
While the events of this graphic novel depict the return of Ra's Al Ghul to the land of the living, I noticed that the real theme of the story was about the relationship between a son and his father. Batman and his two adopted children, Tim Drake (the 3rd Robin) and Dick Grayson (Nightwing), join forces to protect his only biological son, Damian. In the mean time, Ra's Al Ghul is again presented as the complete opposite of Bruce Wayne, as it shows glimpses of his relationship with his father and son. While some thought the action was a little sparse, to me, the relationships explored here were far more interesting.

Damian, Bruce Wayne's son and Ra's Al Ghul's grandson, plays an integral part in the plan to bring Ra's back to life. He has been raised in the lap of luxury and has known no hardship. Naturally, he's completely insufferable, and is a very easy character to hate. In what could perhaps become a redeeming quality, however, what Damian desires above all else is the approval of his father, even though Bruce could really care less, and is much more interested in ensuring Ra's remains comfortably dead.

Nightwing and Robin, Bruce's two "adopted" sons, also seek the respect of Batman, but I think deep down they know they already have it. Neither want to fail him, but also, it seems both would rather have their biological parents back if they could. By far, the best parts of this graphic novel are the scene written by Paul Dini where Ra's tempts Robin with bringing his parents back, and the resolution of that situation later on.

The second Robin, Jason Todd, is only mentioned in passing, but it should be noted that he was killed by the Joker while looking for his biological mother. I'm not sure if that fits into this theme, choosing his biological mother over Batman, as his biological parent was still alive. Batman does feel great responsibility for Jason's death, however, and we know he considers it to be his greatest failing.

Bruce's relationship with his parents is well known. His entire crusade against crime is a result of a promise he made on his parents grave, and he desperately wants his work to be something his parents would be proud of. Alfred is his surrogate father figure, and this is the relationship that is displayed as an ideal father-son relationship in this comic. Both Bruce and Alfred try hard to protect each other and not to let down the other, they care for each other and work together.

Ra's, on the other hand, has a very destructive relationship with his father (Sensei) and son (the White Ghost). He overthrew his father as leader of their clan a young man, and in the course of this story the two attempt to destroy each other completely. Meanwhile, Ra's son, The White Ghost, has been his only faithful servant for centuries, yet Ra's never calls him by his name or refers to him as his son. Ra's only seems to appreciate The White Ghost in the very moment he possesses his body. In the end, Ra's has outlived his father who he despised, and destroyed his son who loved him unconditionally.

In this regard, Talia Al Ghul really doesn't fit in. She's one of the only women in the novel and really just seems to follow Batman and run around punching and kicking ninjas. While she's attempting to protect her son, it's clear he's not interested in her protection, and doesn't seem to think she needs protection herself. She had to be in the story, as she's Ra's daughter and Damian's mother, but there doesn't seem to be much other justification for her being there.

In the end, this graphic novel succeeded in some areas more than others. Some thought there wasn't enough action, but I disagree. Just because people aren't beating each other up doesn't mean there isn't exciting stuff going on. In all, I thought the story was very good, it provided an intriguing look into some of the relationships that make Batman interesting, and it gave a believable way to bring back one of Batman's greatest villains.

What happens when one of Batman's most powerful enemies comes back from the dead? Nothing too good, as Batman, Robin, and Nightwing and are about to find out in The Resurrection of Ra's Al Ghul. The story picks up with Damian, the son of Bruce Wayne and Talia Al Ghul, seeking Batman for help when his grandfather returns from the grave to use him for a new body. Soon enough, Batman is on the scene, as Robin struggles with playing second fiddle to Damian, and Nightwing gets thrown into the mix as well. The Resurrection of Ra's Al Ghul is pretty much a crossover of a number of Batbooks, and feature contributions from writers including Grant Morrison, Paul Dini, Peter Milligan, Keith Champagne, and Fabian Nicieza; and artists including Tony Daniel, David Lopez, Jason Pearson, Freddie E. Williams II, Don Kramer, and Ryan Benjamin among others. The biggest problem with this hardcover collection is that a majority of the book just feels uneven and disjointed thanks to having so much talent on board throughout so many books. The brilliance of Grant Morrison's run on Batman in particular gets lost in all of this, but for the most part, The Resurrection of Ra's Al Ghul manages to be pretty entertaining regardless. Still though, it just seems that the story as a whole could have been much better too. Flaws aside though, The Resurrection of Ra's Al Ghul is a decent and entertaining Batman saga that you will get some enjoyment out of, but if you're looking for some Batman stories that really prove memorable, just stick with Grant Morrison's current run.

This story doesn't hold a candle to the older Demon stories. Maybe it's not supposed to: it's not about the goal of cleansing the earth, the art is disjointed, the character of Ra's seems a bit off and its focus on a relationship between Ra's and Batman is awkwardly portrayed at best.

In this story Ra's disembodied spirit is looking for a host and we get the filet of his life story as the host body is being prepared for possession. My understanding was that, if the Lazarus pool failed to resurrect the body then the character would be gone. I was hoping the redirection the story titled itself after was something less literal.

Now that Batman's got a son with Ra's Al Ghul's daughter, maybe the story is going to be about the Ascention of the kid to the role, or even more clever: his mother. Nah. This is a 'cult' story, a story of worship and ritual. This isn't a story of a rise to power and acceptance of the role (ala, I don't know, the Godfather, for example). Gramps want the body of the boy. And when that doesn't work out, we get the rise of zombie Ra's and soon another bodily possession of a character who was introduced just for that purpose and then to die. Meh.

I've always liked the relationship Ra's and Batman: his daughter loves the 'Detective' and is regularly blinded by his own love of his daughte to the point that she thwarts his plans time and again. But that's aside the point because these relationships are really unimportant in this story: just that the boy is Batman's son. And that Robin wants to resurrect his father. Geez. Not every character born of tragedy needs to be bathed in it and ignorantly obsessed...

There's no plan for world domination ... that's fine. There's no romance between Batman and Talia. Okay... There's no real character development ... Uh... The villain is a zombie. Oh.

And in the end? A toast to family and nothing's changed. It's just not what I want in a story focusing on Ra's Al Ghul, let alone a crossover 'event'.

    I would save the money.
