This is no book of Westernised fairy tales - this is a sprawling collection of self-contained tiny legends pertaining to people, places and things. Most of them are just a couple of pages long, and a good many are not so much stories as remarks, but the whole thing is endlessly engrossing. Anyone interested in mythology or in Japan should own this. I've never read another book that does what this one does so elegantly and comprehensively.

I love folklore and mythology. Japan's folklore has a special place in my heart, but there doesn't seem to be many quality books on the subject in English. So when I saw this in the Kindle store, I knew I was going to buy it eventually.

It was worth the buy. With extended commentary and lovely illustrations, this is a wonderful collection of lore. Alongside 'The Legends of Tono', this is one of my favorite books on the subject of folklore.

August Strindberg (18491912) was born in Stockholm and began writing plays in 1869. His first major play was Master Olof, written in 1872 but not performed for nine years. A previous reviewer (annalait@apia.vlk.fi) commented that Miss Julie is a true story about Strindberg, his 16 yr. old lover and his wife Harriet. This is not entirely correct. It is based on one of his marriages - to his first wife Siri von Essen. He married Siri in 1877. Miss Julie was written in 1888 and was first put on stage in 1889 with Siri acting out the role of Julie. He divorced Siri in 1891 and did not meet Harriet (who was actually his third wife) until 1900. They married in 1901. Strindberg identifies with Jean in the play. Strindberg felt inferior to Siri (a Baroness). Jean was also inferior to Julie but he triumphed over her in the end.

Classic, but not my play of choice

Strindberg's "Miss Julie" is definitely on the list of classic plays that any theater lover should read.
Written at the end of the XIX century it's both revolutionary in staging techniques and representative of the class struggles of the period. But it's probably not THE play you want to read if you're new to reading drama. Terribly misogynistic and not particularly current in the emotional themes "Miss Julie" feels like more of a play designed for the study of the history of drama, then for downtime enjoyment.

Definitely one of the better plays I have read in my survey of late 19th century European drama. While there are slight flaws in it, such as frequent mood swings by the characters, the overall writing is fabulous. Jean is a perfectly portrayed Machiavelli, doing what is necessary for him to succeed at whatever costs. Julie, on the other hand, wavers between the strong and self-confident seductress of the beginning, to the weak and manipulated wronged woman at the end. Definitely a cornerstone in the history of modern drama.

The characters never really rise off the page, but there are engrossing plot twists aplenty, including one last humdinger in which Holloway proves she's well worth her fees.

The doctor, the therapist, and the wife

A talented but abrasive surgeon turns up dead in the garden of a not-for-profit rehab clinic. The entire devoted staff has reason to want him out of the way. So who dunnit? According to an elderly witness, a demon in a black "carapace" with a tail!

Barbara Holloway is hired to represent the two most likely suspects, the surgeons much-abused young wife, and the brilliant and charismatic physical therapist who would lose his job if the surgeon had his way.

This well-written mystery is somewhat slow moving, but sustains interest to the end. A fun and entertaining summer read.

Holloway is back

I got addicted to Kate Wilhelm's books because they're about Oregon, mostly Eugene, where I live, and her descriptions of the area are dead on. Her plots though, sometimes fall short in my opinion. Either they aren't complex enough, the characters don't really stand out, or the writing just isn't great. That said, however, I've grown quite fond of the character of Barbara Holloway. She's a tough lawyer, an interesting character, and I love her father and her business partner Shelley. So, I was thrilled when I saw Wilhelm had a new Holloway mystery out.
It didn't exactly disappoint me, but the first part was a bit slow. Wilhelm took a long time to get to Barbara Holloway. The first part focused on a character, Erica Castle, and I thought it dragged a bit. The relationships between the people at the rehab clinic where a doctor is murdered are interesting and compelling enough to drive the book forward until the really interesting parts come when Holloway starts her investigation. In traditional Wilhelm fashion, she keeps the strands loose and muddy until Holloway wraps it all up and explains everything in the end. It's a quick read. And, if you already like Barbara Holloway, you'll like her in this one too.

Thomas Kelso and William McIvey founded the Kelso/McIvey Rehabilitation Center in Portland fifty-two years ago as a non-profit organization. Twenty-five shares each were given to the two doctors and their wives. When both of the McIvey's passed on their fifty combined shares went to their son, Dr. David McIvey, who wants to revoke the original charter and turn the center into a surgical clinic. Thomas Kelso is a very old man and he is ill; his beloved wife is in the final stages of Alzheimer's. Thomas is trying to find a way to keep David from closing down the center. David McIvey may be a brilliant surgeon but he is a horrible excuse for a human being. His young, beautiful wife, Annie, is being turned into a "Stepford Wife" and is the subject of his intense ire when she makes a mistake. Annie is a volunteer at the rehab center where everyone loves her.
The Rehabilitation Center is open to anyone that they feel they can help and has an excellent staff. Darren Halvord is a brilliant physical therapist with an outstanding record for rehabilitating his patients. Dr. Greg Boatman, the center's staff physician, is a warm, caring and totally devoted doctor. His wife, Naomi, acts as the center's director. The center depends on contributions and volunteers to keep it successful.
David McIvey is murdered, and Thomas Kelso calls in Barbara Holloway to represent the clinic. However, the prime suspects in the murder are Annie McIvey and Darren Halvord, rumored to be lovers. Barbara agrees to represent Annie and Darren, and only them, even though the clinic will be paying her fee. She believes in their innocence but only has a few days to find evidence that will keep the pair from being arrested. Of course she has some very competent people helping her, Bailey Novell, a private investigator, and her father, Frank, a retired criminal attorney.
CLEAR AND CONVINCING PROOF is a riveting story and page-turner par excellence! Kate Wilhelm always presents the essential ingredients in her books with flair - a baffling mystery, superb dialogue, outstanding secondary characters and an ending with a twist. Barbara, Frank and Bailey have become very old and dear friends to readers and it is always a special treat to become part of their team as they track down a killer. Other return characters are also a joy to visit. This is one of Ms. Wilhelm's best books to date, and that says a lot!

Bennett calls contemporary Chicago the third city to distinguish it from its two predecessors: the first city, a sprawling industrial center whose historical arc ran from the Civil War to the Great Depression; and the second city, the Rustbelt exemplar of the period from around 1950 to 1990. The third city features a dramatically revitalized urban core, a shifting population mix that includes new immigrant streams, and a growing number of middle-class professionals working in new economy sectors. It is also a city utterly transformed by the top-to-bottom reconstruction of public housing developments and the ambitious provision of public works like Millennium Park. It is, according to Bennett, a work in progress spearheaded by Richard M. Daley, a self-consciously innovative mayor whose strategy of neighborhood revitalization and urban renewal is a prototype of city governance for the twenty-first century. The Third City ultimately contends that to understand Chicago under Daley’s charge is to understand what metropolitan life across North America may well look like in the coming decades.

A refreshing analysis of 21st Century urban development

This is a very interesting if not completely comprehensive or perhaps ultimately convincing vision of the developing societal organization of late 20th century/early 21st century Chicago. Bennett credits Mayor Richard Daley (the son) with ushering the city into a post-industrial future. How this will work for the city's impoverished and marginalized residents is not clear to me from what I've read so far (about half), but Bennett identifies benefits from the updated approach, and it's easy to see how they might apply to other metropolises, too. The writing is clear, if a bit dry, and the author's analysis is refreshing.

I wouldn't choose this book

I got this book for a class and to be honest found it very hard to follow. I read the chapters several times and often had to look for insight elsewhere. Bennett's perspective of Chicago is much different than my own so that may have been why it was difficult for me.

Situating his study in the context of a pervasive magical worldview that embraced both orthodox Christianity and folk belief, Dillinger shows that, in some cases, witch trials themselves were used as magical instruments, designed to avert threats of impending divine wrath. "Evil People" describes a two-century evolution in which witch hunters who liberally bestowed the label "evil people" on others turned into modern images of evil themselves.

In the original German, "Evil People" won the Friedrich Spee Award as an outstanding contribution to the history of witchcraft.

She's Got the Look and she's got a fabulous new book too

I'll be the first to admit I adore Leslie Kelly's books. All of them. And quite frankly I'm running out of synonyms to express how terrific a writer she truly is.

SHE'S GOT THE LOOK is now my new favorite. It's a laugh out loud funny, sexy as all get out, plus it has a good mystery mixed in, too. It just doesn't get any better than this.

Out with friends one night and slightly drunk, Melody Tanner once made a list of five men she could sleep with no matter what. It was a joke. But now six years and one nasty divorce later, she comes back to Savannahs and finds out two out of the five on her old list are dead.

To make matters even more embarrassing, the number one hunk on her infamous list, Nick Walker, former Marine hero and cover of Time magazine, is the detective sent to question her about it.

I'm putting SHE'S GOT THE LOOK on a list, too. It is immediately going onto my top five best books ever list.

She's Got a Hit

"She's Got the Look" is a great read full of humor and suspense. Melody Tanner is newly divorced and back home. Years ago she and her friends made a "men to do" list back before she was married and Melody thinks it's time to dust the list off, the only problem is that the men on her list keep dying. In comes Nick, number one on Melody's list, but the last one she really wants to "do" because she knows he could break her already broken heart. But Nick isn't budging, especially when it looks like Melody has a stalker. Wonderful journey to love. Read this book!

This was just fun.

This is the first of her books I've read. It won't be the last. I will be looking for the book written before this one, She Drives Me Crazy, as well as anything else out there by Ms Kelly. I enjoyed the people in the book, found the second love story in the book as enjoyable the lead story.

I will be looking for more of her work. Thanks for the fun Ms Kelly.
