This long-awaited revised and updated edition includes dozens of new terms and developments that will introduce a new generation to the labor lexicon, even as labor’s strength grows in the Obama era.

From Frederick Douglass to César Chavez, from the Haymarket Riots in 1886 to the Change to Win federation formed in 2005, this classic labor lexicon provides concise, enlightening sketches of over five hundred key places, people, and events in American labor history. A practical resource for students and journalists, The Lexicon of Labor is as entertaining for longtime union members seeking to get reacquainted with the traditions of the movement as it is for newcomers wishing to discover the unique language and history of unionism.

The Lexicon of Labor also includes explanations of major legislative acts, definitions of key legal terminology, and complete listings of all the member unions of the AFL-CIO and independent unions in the United States. It is the perfect introduction to the history of labor in America.

I first purchased this book two years ago. I have used it in every labor studies class that I have taken and I wouldn't dream of not using it. The definitions are precise and clear. I feel so strongly about this book that I recently purchased another copy for my Local Union President. This book is a must have.

Eleven-year-old Charlene is not impressed with Merry, her new guardian. Clearly the woman needs some major help in the parenting department. Their neighbor Jack could be the right man for the job—but it doesn't look as though the two grown-ups are ever going to get together without help.

Jack recognizes a short-distance runner when he sees one, and Merry fits the bill. The gorgeous party girl is so unprepared to take charge of the totally fun-proof Charlene, he almost feels sorry for her. Almost.

Merry is in way over her head. Who would have thought that a vow written on a cocktail napkin would make her a parent long before her time…or that a rock-solid man and a serious little girl would ever become the two most important people in her life?

Merry has finally found something worth fighting for. Now all she has to do is figure out just how to fight!

Touching and humorous contemporary romance!
By Sarah W
Merry Olsen has just been awarded guardianship of eleven-year-old Charlene Ross. Merry knew Charlene's father, Charlie, when he lived in Minnesota, but they lost touch after he moved away. Upon learning of Charlie's recent passing, Merry packs up her life and hightails it to Virginia to show Charlene that someone is looking out for her. She buys her gifts, cute girly items she's sure Charlene will adore, and plans to recreate Christmas because Charlene missed out due to her father's death. Unfortunately, Charlene is not quite the typical girly eleven-year-old Merry was expecting.

Charlene, call me Charlie, Ross is gangly, dresses in her father's old clothes, and has a short hair cut reminiscent of a boy. She's not into the latest boy bands, make-up or gossip fests. Instead, her interests lie in math, science, computers and everything Merry knows nothing about. But Merry won't give up, she's going to bond with Charlie, no matter what it takes. Merry may have been flighty and a bit fluffy in Minnesota, but she's not going to leave this lonely and hurt girl in the lurch.

Enter neighbor Jack Mackinnon. He can't believe some of the zany stuff Merry is doing. He's sure she won't last long as Charlie's guardian, but he doesn't mind viewing her delightful personality through his kitchen window. However, both Jack and Charlie have a lesson to learn when it comes to Merry. She's going to make this work and she's giving it her all. But will it be enough to help Charlie?

Blame it on Cupid is just plain fantastic! Merry is in many ways a true girly-girl. She chose her car based on its color, she loves to shop, she doesn't hold jobs for long, and she's a consummate flirt. However, she truly has a heart of gold and it shines through on every page and in all her interactions with Charlie, Jack, and his twin boys. Readers may be amused by some of Merry's antics but they will surely be impressed with her determination to see Charlie settled, safe, and as happy as she can be.

Jack proves to be a good match for Merry. He's a divorced single father with a good job. He enjoys poker, loves his two sons, and enjoys romantic evenings out with women. But he's also a good shoulder for both Merry and Charlie to lean on. I enjoyed watching him fall under Merry's spell and come to see that there was so much more beneath her surface than he expected. He may not give her enough credit initially, but that ends quickly when he sees how Merry is doing her best to be a mom to Charlie.

Blame it on Cupid is just pure, plain fun. It's a wonderful contemporary romance that gives readers a strong plot, enough spicy romance, and characters that you will enjoy spending time with. Jennifer Greene has hit a bulls-eye with this engaging read. It has a small connection to another of her titles, Blame it on Chocolate, but this book wonderfully and adeptly stands on its own. Well worth your hard earned money.

Cupid is Charming
By Cherise Everhard
Merry is the delightfully carefree and somewhat 'ditsy' friend of Lucy, from the first book, Blame it on Chocolate. She is a loveable woman who floats from job to job, boyfriend to boyfriend. Things change when an old friend dies and she is appointed guardian of his 11 year old daughter, Charlene. Not only does Merry inherit a child, but she has to pack up her things and move to a new city. To say that Merry is a fish out of water is an understatement. She attacks this new challenge with gusto. She buys books, shops for healthy foods, tries to be this little girl's friend as well as guardian.

Of course a good romance wouldn't be worth anything without a little conflict and a few obstacles along the way. This book has that, although I won't reveal what. Merry gets some much needed help from a handsome neighbor who seems to always show up when she needs him. Jack is a divorced father of two twin 15 year old boys. He's gorgeous, charming and a much needed white knight. He also helps to supply some steamy sex scenes. :)

Charlene is a smart vulnerable little girl, trying to cope with the loss of her father anyway she can. I found her very sweet and endearing. Throughout the book I just wanted to hug her. Jack's boys Kicker and Cooper are adorable! Kicker is the extroverted teen who thinks about nothing but girls and sports. Cooper is the introverted quiet one. Both have their father's looks and charm. They may be teens but they are also very gentlemanly. They are very good with and to Merry and Charlene. There is a side story that involves one of the teens. It is an excellent addition to this book.

What I liked best about this story is that the secondary characters were as enchanting as the main characters, without taking the focus off Merry and Jack. I hope that Ms. Greene will let us visit Charlene, Kicker and Cooper when they are older. I'd like to read their stories as well. This was a great book. It was funny, sad, touching, heartwarming and romantic. The characters and the storylines were both gripping and entertaining.

Blame It On Cupid-A Joyfully Recommended Title!
By mnix
Years ago when Merry had agreed to be the guardian for her friend's daughter, Charlie, in the event of his death, she didn't really think it would ever happen. Now she's guardian to a grief-stricken eleven year old who is by no means happy by her arrival. To add more trouble, Merry's new neighbor, Jack, doesn't seem to approve either. As time goes on, Merry, Jack and Charlie, along with Jack's two sons, become closer and closer, but Jack's ex-wife had put him through an emotional ringer and he's not sure he wants another relationship. Just when Jack is deciding exactly what he wants from Merry, everything begins to blow up in their faces when Charlie's deadbeat mother returns and attempts to gain custody in order to claim the inheritance that Charlie's father has left her.

I loved Blame It On Cupid! Merry is a delightful mess that readers will quickly come to adore, while Jack is everything a romance hero should be! Jennifer Greene has penned a romance that will keep you smiling all the way through and sad to see the last page. A quirky and fun romance, Blame It On Cupid is one book that romance lovers will want to add to the top of their "to be read" pile!

Racing for Innocence: Whiteness, Gender, and the Backlash Against Affirmative Action, by Jennifer Pierce

How is it that recipients of white privilege deny the role they play in reproducing racial inequality? Racing for Innocence addresses this question by examining the backlash against affirmative action in the late 1980s and early 1990s—just as courts, universities, and other institutions began to end affirmative action programs.

This book recounts the stories of elite legal professionals at a large corporation with a federally mandated affirmative action program, as well as the cultural narratives about race, gender, and power in the news media and Hollywood films. Though most white men denied accountability for any racism in the workplace, they recounted ways in which they resisted—whether wittingly or not— incorporating people of color or white women into their workplace lives. Drawing on three different approaches—ethnography, narrative analysis, and fiction—to conceptualize the complexities and ambiguities of race and gender in contemporary America, this book makes an innovative pedagogical tool.

Review
"In sum, Racing for Innocence is an important addition to the literature on race, gender, and equal opportunity and expands our knowledge as we contemplate the roots of the backlash against affirmative action."—David Hamilton Golland, Journal of American Ethnic History

"Considered together, the chapters in Racing for Innocence demonstrate how collective and personal narratives of white male supremacy have buttressed each other—remaking racism and sexism as interpersonal rather than collective and institutional problems (and, conveniently, always someone else's problem) . . . Pierce pulls back the curtain to reveal just how tightly, and in how many ways, elite white men have gripped and consolidated power when faced with pressures to make room for others—and the mental and rhetorical gymnastics they have undertaken to convince themselves and others that they came by their status fairly."—Katherine Turk, American Studies

"Jennifer L. Pierce uses a nuanced qualitative lens to offer valuable insights into the workings of whiteness . . . Pierce is a careful analyst who provides astute insights into the workings of whiteness in these elite spaces. These insights and Pierce's clear, lucid writing will be appreciated by both students and specialists alike."—Amy C. Steinbugler, American Journal of Sociology

"Pierce's book is a welcome look at how the concept of 'whiteness' operates among elites. . . Pierce makes a compelling case that the timing of these [1980s and 90s Hollywood] movies was not coincidental, as affirmative action policies were being attacked nationally and, at the same time, there were many stories circulating about white male innocence and injury. . . Recommended."—J. M. Richards, CHOICE

"It is the continued controversy surrounding affirmative action that makes Jennifer Pierce's Racing for Innocence an important book for scholars in this field . . . The greatest strength of Pierce's work is its ability to elucidate the opinions and beliefs of an elite group in American society . . . Overall, this is a very good book that raises questions that are not going away no matter how much white America wants to believe that racism is dead."—Margaret S. Hrezo, Law and Politics Book Review
"This compelling book brings affirmative action back into the spotlight. Pierce delivers insights into the thought processes of opponents of affirmative action—including white women and white men—and also offers insights into how African American attorneys, both women and men, experience white privilege and the stigma of affirmative action as expressed in the language and behavior of whites."—Patricia Yancey Martin, Florida State University
"A major contribution to our sociological understanding of the backlash against affirmative action. I know of no other book that examines the issue from so many perspectives. Pierce provides a unique look at the cultural cues that led some white male lawyers to resist affirmative action in the workplace. She also shows how the media's exclusion of gender and white women from the discussion obscured the reality that white women were a major beneficiary of affirmative action even while they continued to experience workplace discrimination."—Susan E. Chase, University of Tulsa
"Interviewing the actual players—those who hire or fire employees—Jennifer Pierce takes a novel approach to understanding how the popular narrative of affirmative action became internalized. This thoughtful book demonstrates how a rather neoconservative template of opinions, metaphors, theories, and beliefs was disseminated into the main stream."—Charles Gallagher, LaSalle University
"A signal contribution to the sociological imagination and to critical whiteness studies at the levels of method, content, and even style. Pierce gives human faces and gendered bodies their places in the attack on affirmative action without losing sight of structural forces that have connected colorblindness and conservatism."—David Roediger, University of Illinois, and author of How Race Survived U.S. History

About the Author

Wonderful book!
By R A Schurman
Racing for Innocence addresses a social issue of tremendous importance - the backlash against affirmative action and its consequences for Americans in our post-civil rights era. The book is relevant and timely as affirmative action has again come into the national spotlight with the recent arguments before U.S. Supreme Court on another "reverse discrimination" case, Fischer v. the University of Texas.

Based on participant observation, in-depth interviews, and an analysis of the "race story" told in Hollywood films from the 1980s and 1990s, Racing for Innocence makes a significant contribution to sociology, ethnic studies, and feminist studies. It is written in a highly accessible manner and should be interest to a broad audience concerned with why the United States still needs policies such as affirmative action.

"Stories" of the Master
By M. J. Smith
Anthony de Mello's books generally fall into three groups - guided meditations; cross-cultural, interreligious, traditional teaching tales; and sayings of the Master in context. One Minute Wisdom falls into this latter category using a style related to the saying of the rabbis in the talmudic writings or certain collections of Hindu avatar sayings.
The purpose of the sayings is to provoke a response, to help one to break out of the habitual patterns of thought and action that substitute for rather than express religious beliefs.
An example: "To everyone's surprise the Master seemed unenthusiastic about religious education for the young. When asked why, he said, "Innoculate them when they are young and you prevent them from catching the real thing when they grow up."
The book can be read for amusement or to change one's life. It is only as good as the reader is willing to allow it to be.

Outstanding Work
By Swing King
For those among us in the hunt for a deliverance of some sort, the late Fr. Anthony de Mello delivers the goods right here. My first exposure to Anthony de Mello was via his book titled Awareness. I don't want to spend time reviewing another book here, but it likewise is a must have. One Minute Wisdom is a book filled to the brim with sharp, charming, and sometimes outright hilarious axioms from all-around the world. De Mello dips into the treasure fields of the Gospels, Eastern and Western mysticism, et cetera. He unabashedly borrows from any spiritually sound tradition, be that a Christian or even Buddhist source. As he once put it rather succinctly in another work of his titled Taking Flight, "Truth only calls for an open mind." And an open mind he most indubitably did have! These parables/allegories cut straight to the heart of spirituality. No commentary by de Mello, no personal interpretations of his own here (though his insights in other works are always very insightful). No, he leaves commentary up to us readers in this one. He literally covers just about anything you can visualize people setting out for a voyage into the spiritual plateau could need. Buy the book. Your going to absolutely love it.

After "Song of the Bird", a Worthy Sequel!
By austinherzog
After savoring de Mello's "Song of the Bird" (q. v.)for many years, it was tremendous to come across this volume. The 'pearls' here tend to be a bit longer, but nevertheless very provocative. Get the above one first, but don't hesitate to select this one immediately thereafter.

About the Author
Legendary figures in the body of Christ, Charles (1920—2010) and Frances (1916—2009) Hunter were known around the world as two of the most anointed and energetic evangelists on earth. The Happy Hunters, as they were affectionately dubbed, ministered in 49 nations around the world; everywhere, including the United States, they witnessed awesome healings. In one service in Bogotá, Colombia, they saw 100 people get out of wheelchairs in an incredible display of the power of God.

Charles and Frances Hunter made famous what are known as "Healing Explosions," large–scale, citywide campaigns in which the key focus is to pray for the sick to be healed. Countless thousands have been saved, healed, and filled with the Holy Spirit through their ministry. Many thousands have been trained to heal the sick, thus multiplying the healing message like liquid gold spreading across the globe.

They appeared on Regis and Kathie Lee, The Tom Snyder Show, Benny Hinn's This Is Your Day program, DayStar TV Network, CBS's 60 Minutes program, TBN, CBN, Cornerstone TV, Primetime TV, and many other national TV programs and networks. They authored over fifty best–selling books, including How to Heal the Sick, which has been translated into so many languages that 85% of the world can read this incredible book in their native languages. They also produced videos/DVDs with hours of instruction and teaching on this subject, which have also been translated into many languages of the world, reaching the globe with their life–changing message.

Reports flooded in of people being healed of all kinds of diseases and afflictions, including blindness, multiple sclerosis, lupus, cancer, and numerous other diseases.

Two obedient people with hearts sold out to God listened to their heavenly Father and spread His Word, His grace, His mercy, and His healing power wherever they went. This dynamic duo continues to share their incredible anointing in the area of healing and to minister the baptism in the Holy Spirit through their books, audios, and videos.

It works in Brazil, too!
By Carlos A. Oliveira
In 1996, I was invited to teach in a Spiritual Warfare Bible College in Goiania, Brazil. During that year I was given one of Charles and Frances Hunter's books entitled, "How to Heal the Sick". That little book made such an impact in my life as I began to pray for the sick everywhere and they were getting healed. I recall studying and applying the principles described in the book, and teaching and encouraging my students to do the same. Some of the students got healed during the classes after experiencing God's power, then they themselves began to pray for people outside the classroom: in their homes, in churches, in hospitals, and on the streets. People were getting healed on a daily basis! They were being healed from all kinds of sicknesses and diseases as well as delivered from Satan's bondage.

General evaluation of How to Heal the Sick
By Dirk O. Nel
1. Is this an in depth presentation?

Charles and Francis are on a mission! They want all believers in Jesus Christ to be able to heal the sick, cast out devils and to operate in the supernatural. This is their motivation for writing How to heal the sick and they make it clear in chapter 1: Double vision for a single mission.

Their main aim for writing this book was to increase the faith of the readers while introducing them to various aspects of the healing ministry. The book is a good introduction to the healing ministry, covering various ways of healing and many testimonies. I would not regard the book as an in depth representation.

2. Did I agree with the way that the author interprets scripture?

Yes! I especially appreciated the way Francis interprets the story of Elijah's "death" in chapter 7. The principle is that just as Elisha SAW Elijah being taken up to heaven and because of that received the double portion, so we too must continually look at our situations with spiritual eyes. We must apply our faith to Holy Spirit inspired visions and persevere until it comes to past.

It is also clear that Charles and Francis interprets scripture by applying a childlike faith, thereby gaining access to power of God. It is reading, interpreting and applying scripture in this way that has the power to save lives.

3. Was there any new information?

This book has been a rehash of many of the things that I have learnt so far this year. Even so, there were a few things that were new information to me:

* The discussion in Chapter 18 about the benefits and healing achieved by growing out arms and legs.

* The revelation in Chapter 7 of Elisha "seeing" his destiny was not altogether new (it was covered in the book by David Yonggi Cho called The Fourth Dimension), but I found it to be very helpful.

* The discussion in Chapter 6 about SPEAKING to the mountain. Francis emphasises that it is not "Whatsoever ye pray" but "Whatsoever ye say unto the mountain" that will bring results.

* I also found Chapter 5 - Let the sick lay hands on you - very interesting.

4. What impact did the book have on me?

Francis and Charles are spirit filled and anointed and boy, do they know it!! If they are not speaking to the mountain, they are laying hands on the sick or having the sick lay hands on them! What I took from this book is a whole dosage of faith. Faith that God wants to heal people. Faith that God wants us to be acquainted with the supernatural and want us to flow in it as if it is natural. Once again, I was impressed with God's heart towards people. God is so generous with His healing power and I just sense that God wants all his children to flow in the power so that He can heal the whole world!

Buried in the Bitter Waters: The Hidden History of Racial Cleansing in America, by Elliot Jaspin

“Leave now, or die!” Those words-or ones just as ominous-have echoed through the past hundred years of American history, heralding a very unnatural disaster-a wave of racial cleansing that wiped out or drove away black populations from counties across the nation. While we have long known about horrific episodes of lynching in the South, this story of racial cleansing has remained almost entirely unknown. These expulsions, always swift and often violent, were extraordinarily widespread in the period between Reconstruction and the Depression era. In the heart of the Midwest and the Deep South, whites rose up in rage, fear, and resentment to lash out at local blacks. They burned and killed indiscriminately, sweeping entire counties clear of blacks to make them racially “pure.” Many of these counties remain virtually all-white to this day. In Buried in the Bitter Waters, Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Elliot Jaspin exposes a deeply shameful chapter in the nation’s history-and one that continues to shape the geography of race in America.

From Publishers Weekly
Jaspin's harrowing and exhaustively researched history of racial cleansing in the United States is painfully eye-opening, and Leslie's voice—filled with horror and sorrow—takes the pain to another level. One's eyes cannot lightly skip over the cringe-inducing passage that explains the physics of whipping, or the scene of the burning and disembowelment of a pregnant woman, or white leaders' hate-filled speeches. In a low tone radiating rage and disbelief at the senseless violence and hardcore racism, Leslie relates Jaspin's accounts of a dozen instances of blacks being driven out of their homes by whites in a steady, commanding pace. The stories are disparate in locale and time—the cleansings happened in both North and South after the Civil War through the '20s—but they flow together thanks to their grim shared topic, Jaspin's eloquent prose and Leslie's almost cinematic delivery. Jaspin pursued this topic for 10 years. Listeners will be glad that he persevered to produce this important book: his passion and conviction are richly evident and inspiring throughout thanks to Leslie's first-rate narration.

Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Jaspin draws on a decade of research of the horrific practices of small towns across America that resulted in the expulsion of black residents, the equivalent of racial cleansing. Drawing on archives and census data, Jaspin documents demographic changes from Reconstruction forward that show severe drops in black populations and the creation of towns that have remained all white. The most famous case of racial cleansing, Rosewood, Florida, in 1923, was no anomaly, as Jaspin notes 260 such towns. In fact, such expulsions were so common that newspaper accounts recorded them. Shame, an eagerness to forget, and reluctance to deal with reparations and compensation have allowed the expulsions to lapse into the past. Expulsions ranged from those centered on violence--lynchings and race riots--to threats and ultimatums that did not result in actual violence. Jaspin focuses on 12 of the worst cases, mapping out the counties, recounting the historical context, and interviewing those who remember. A chilling portrait of a shameful part of American history that has reshaped its racial geography. Vanessa Bush

Violence, Villainy, Victimization...
By Gio
... elements of a powerful film on the order of Yojimbo or The Good the Bad and the Ugly - films where a defenseless minority in a village somewhere is terrorized by the rowdiest elements of their majority neighbors, but this time no Toshiro Mifune or Clint Eastwood is on hand to set things right. By individual violence and/or mob intimidation, the minority is driven from its homes and property, often with the memory of the public slaughter of family members to carry with them into exile and to preclude their ever returning. And in every case there is indifference or collusion from the police and other authorities.

The heart of Buried in the Bitter Waters is narrative -- twelve tragic stories of violence in twelve far-flung communities, decades apart in time. In each story, ordinary people united by their history and ethnicity suddenly rise against their neighbors of a different history and ethnicity, attack them physically, intimidate them psychologically and economically, and force them to leave the community, never to return under threat of death. It's always majority against minority, of course, or it couldn't be done. And in these stories it's successful; in every case, the community remains "pure" even generations later, and feels darned proud of its purity. True, the level of violence is different from narrative to narrative, but violence is always the means. In one narrative, the mob - provoked by a crime committed by one young man of the minority group - rampages through the minority community. It grabs two young men at random and literally shoots them to pieces. Then it seizes a man considered one of the elders of the minority and lynches him, leaving his body hanging as "a grizly tourist attraction" for two days. When that man's pregnant wife seeks help from the authorities, the mob seizes her also, hangs her upside-down in a tree, douses her with gasoline and sets her on fire, then disembowels her and rips out her eight-month fetus. When the infant cries feebly, one of the mob throws it on the ground and stomps it to death.

This is not a scene from a Medieval pogrom, or for the Thirty Years War, or from Nazi Germany, or from sectarian strife in Iraq. The scene of the murdered mother occurred in Georgia in 1918, and all the others narrated in "Buried in Bitter Waters" took place in America - in Tennessee, Texas, Georgia, Indiana, Kentucky, North Carolina, Missouri, Arkansas. The victims in every case were African-Americans - descendants of slaves brought to the communities by the ancestors of the mob, long-time neighbors but never accepted as such - and the perpetrators of violence in every case were European-Americans, local people, not roving marauders.

Ethnic Cleansing is such a horrifying concept that Americans will bristle in anger at the mere suggestion that it has occurred in their country, perhaps in their own region. But it has, and not just once, or in one big outburst. Rather it has occurred spontaneously, at random, and often. By careful analysis of census data, old news reports, memoirs, and oral histories, author Elliot Jaspin has identified 260 counties - COUNTIES! not villages - in the states of the South and lower Midwest where 'successful' ethnic cleansings took place sometime between the Civil War and the present. Because of such actions, the demographic map of America even today looks like a checkerboard when the percentage of African-American families is depicted county by county. Jaspin has found that even in communities where the living European-American populace has no historical memory of an ethnic cleansing, such memories persist in the African-American population at large, in the form of vague dread and a sense of unwelcomeness in those communities. Jaspin also speculates that if data were available by towns or townships, the number of incidences of ethnic cleansing in America would be much higher.

Jaspin is a European-American himself, a career journalist and Pulitzer Prize winner working for the Cox Newspaper chain.

Truly, African-Americans and European-Americans have lived through two different histories in "the Land of the Free and the Home of the Brave." But while the European-Americans know and want to know only their own version of American history, the African-Americans are by necessity aware of both versions. Theirs is the ugly one: slavery, dashed hopes after emancipation, Ku Klux Klan raids, lynchings, disenfranchisement, Black Codes of labor, share-cropping peonage, "Sundown Towns," apartheid, denial of opportunity, unequal application of the law, humiliation in popular culture, ghettoization by way of real estate red-lining and denial of credit for home-buying, laws against intermarriage, a perpetual 'inferiority' imposed economically and psychologically. Some things have gotten better since the 1960s, but NOT ENOUGH. Remember that, my fellow European-Americans, when next you feel offended by the anger, expressed by Rev. Jeremiah Wright but felt by many others whose ancestors may have been "cleansed" by yours.

Uncovering Hidden Treasures

Jaspin should be commended for telling the stories of these towns, even when the information concerning these incidents is scant. Buried in the Bitter Waters serves as a reminder to its readers that racial cleansing in America took place throughout the country, not just the Deep South. It also reminds us that much of the history of our country has yet to be told. Selma, Birmingham, Memphis, and Montgomery are familiar names in the history of race in America. Jaspin shines the light on towns like Corbin and Commanche, not to disparage them but to remind us that the racial clensing in America was widespread.

Bitter Indeed
By Nancy Darabpour
I was channel hopping and came across a PBS independent file "Banished" and was quite surprised when the 1st place they mentioned was Washington County, Indiana, where I am orginally from and where my family still is. I was curious, so I did a search on Amazon and came across this book. Again, 1st thing mentioned, Washington County, Indiana. Then, later on in the book I came across Laurel County, Kentucky, where my maternal grandmother's people are from! I never thought I could be so ashamed of where I came from. It hurts to read this book, that people can be so ignorant and cruel.

I definitely suggest reading this. As I mentioned, it hurts, but we all should know our history, and hopefully quit repeating it.
