....to dream of conservation....
By Bfac
I got this book as I do all my ART and Art Conservation books, for information.
And this is a most informative, detailed book...information is important.
It is about the conservation process, not about the making of art, but the considerations we conservators must make before, during and after fixing artworks. Each work of art is different, more so as it ages.
It is not for artists, not even for art-historians, nor art-dealers really; but for everyone interested in saving works of art. A few weeks ago, I paid $355.00 for the Hardcopy, happily...worth every penny, in fact it is worth more, much more, even $1000! ( I guess one could get the Kindle Ebook for 30 bucks saving, but really? 30 bucks?). Do not hesitate to buy this book before only the conservation libraries have the only copies left. Do not ask me for my copy. I have hundreds of books on conservation, hundreds more on art techniques, art processes; it is very important to know how the artists worked, the preparatory canvases, stretchers, paint layers, the coatings. This new book would sit next to my Kurt Wehlte book called "Materials and techniques of paintings". As conservators, we have to know how things age: it is all physics, color and light and chemistry; pressure, temperature, humidity. Knowing how to repair the works of art, so others can enjoy them in the future. Anyway, think what things will cost in the future, and what real ART Books cost even today. Thank you Joyce and Rebecca, and all those who made this book possible
This is the textbook I’ll read at night to dream of conservation...

This will be the gold standard in paintings conservation
By Gordon
Ar a conservator with forty years' experience in paintings conservation, I eagerly awaited this book.

My stomach always tightens when I have to pay what I did, but as soon as I browsed through it I realized that it is not only worth every penny, but would be a bargain at twice the price. There is no question in my mind that \this be the gold standard in the field.

And what an extraordinary endeavor! no wonder it took as long as it did; it is a herculean effort.

Lords of the Land: The War Over Israel's Settlements in the Occupied Territories, 1967-2007, by Idith Zertal, Akiva Eldar

The 1967 Arab-Israeli War was a devastating triumph for Israel, which immediately began to establish settlements in the newly conquered territories. Those settlements, and the movement that made them possible, have utterly transformed Israel, and yet until now the full history of the occupation has never been told. Lords of the Land tells that tragic story, and reveals what a catastrophe it has been for both Israel and the Palestinians.

Review
"In this thorough and eye-opening book, Idith Zertal, a historian, and Akiva Eldar, a journalist, explain how a few tens of thousands of people bent the state to their purpose. Settlements were not on the official agenda after Israel's surprise capture of the Palestinian territories in 1967. But pressure from ardent young religious Zionists found a secular echo among military men, who came to see security benefits to having Israelis live in the West Bank." -- The Economist

"[The] authors are well-informed experts...Lords of the Land is richly detailed." -- The New York Times Book Review

Important Book
By Mr. Shaun Jackson
'Lords of the Land' is unquestionably the definitive account of the settler movement written so far. It sets out in rich detail how successive Israeli governments, including Labour ones supported this disastrous enterprise. It chronicles how Sharon and others on the Israeli right were instrumental in the enterprise. Further then that - it details how intertwined the IDF and government ministries have been with the settlers.

Particularly interesting are the sections regarding the legal mechanisms that have been used over the years for the purpose of settlers aquiring land such as the earlier attempt in the Beth El case to cloke settlements as a "security" consideration to the more sophistacted attempts to turn land in the West Bank into "state land" and ultimately then land for the settlers.

Anyone who cares about peace between Israelis and Palestinian and a two-state solution ought to read this book. Anyone who may naively have thought the settlers were brave Zionist pioneers are likely to be disappointed - if anything, the settlers represent the very opposite - a distortion of Zionism.

The settlements are illegal under both international and Israeli domestic law.
By Alex Bueno-Edwards
A previous reviewer made the shocking (but incorrect) assertion that the legality of the settlements is somehow in question. She is absolutely incorrect. See Article 49 of the Fourth Geneva Convention, which explicitly stipulates: "The Occupying Power shall not deport or transfer parts of its own civilian population into the territory it occupies."
Perhaps she should have read the footnotes of this excellent book, or just searched for the terms "prohibition on settlement of occupied territory" to see a comprehensive discussion of this question from a legal perspective.
Obviously many other people (not only the previous reviewer) may somehow fail to understand that the prohibition on settlement on occupied territory was designed specifically to prevent projects like the Nazi plans for Poland, in which large numbers of civilians were transferred to establish agricultural colonies in various areas. The prohibition is absolute and non-derogable (which means that a country can't opt out of it under certain conditions).
As such, the (il)legality of the settlements under international law is almost universally accepted, with the exception of a VERY small number of scholars seeking to justify this blatant breach of international humanitarian law (the law of war). This excellent book shows how the settlement movement has not only violated international humanitarian law, but also Israeli domestic law (see, for example, the Israeli Supreme Court decision ruling that settlements built on the land of the Palestinian village of Belin were illegal since they were built on land stolen from private owners, yet still allowing the Israeli settlers who broke into the unfinished buildings to remain in the homes).
An excellent, well-researched, and highly relevant book.

Long overdue
By newtonian
(This review is of the Hebrew edition of the book). This is a very well written and extremely well investigated book looking into one of the great tragedies of modern times. Rather than try and use the territories captured in 1967 to help solve the Palestinian refugee problem created with its establishment in 1948, Israel decided to colonize them in a way that would make it very hard ever to disengage from them. This book looks at the process through which this occurred, as well as the effects subjugating another people for the last 40 years has had on Israeli society.

The four female stars of the films--Kate Jackson, Lara Parker, Nancy Barrett and Kathryn Leigh Scott--contribute their recollections of the productions. The book also contains dozens of previously unpublished publicity photographs and behind-the-scenes shots, including many in full color.
“House of Dark Shadows,” released in 1970, involves the story of reluctant vampire Barnabas Collins (Jonathan Frid) and his attempt to make Collinwood governess Maggie Evans (Kathryn Leigh Scott) his eternal bride. The film also starred veteran Hollywood screen actress Joan Bennett.

Great for every Dark Shadows fan!
By Alaina
My whole family is a fan of the series "Dark Shadows," both old and new. For this holiday season, I decided to buy my mother this book, because when she was young she saw the movies in the theatres and always spoke of how the second (featuring Quentin) was so choppy. When I finally got to watch it, I agreed, but I knew there had to be a reason. I had found out that they cut a lot of the movie, and when I found this book, I knew I had to get it for her! This has complete original scripts and Dan Curtis' notes! It's a great gift, because now she can see just what she was missing! I know in the book it says they lost the cut film, but I've recently heard they found it! Hopefully this book will become not just a "fill-in what you missed," but a companion to a complete re-released movie!

So THAT'S What We've Been Missing....
By Mark Rainey
It's a real treat to see the original scripts to both HOUSE and NIGHT OF DARK SHADOWS, since both (especially the latter) suffered significant cuts before audiences got to see them way back when. The behind-the-scenes articles by several of the stars are priceless, especially Kathryn Leigh Scott's ruminations on some of the other personalities involved in the production. Nice package with great photos. Definitely recommended to fans of the movies and the TV series.

A great book for fans and movie buffs alike!
By A Customer
With a direct facsimile of the original draft scripts, this book is great fun for the fans, who will enjoy squinting to decipher the hastily-penciled revisions, and for anyone interested in the evolution of a script. With some appropriate tributes, and a few pretty photographs, there could be a little more depth, but the ride is so much fun that it would feel wrong to be overly critical of this.

Birds of Prey of Australia: A Field Guide, by Stephen Debus

This book is an illustrated field guide to diurnal raptors, a bird group that many people find among the most difficult birds to identify. Raptors are popular and iconic birds, and important ecologically as well as in legislation, with some species listed as threatened. Birds of Prey of Australia will enable people to more easily identify them. It also provides a brief overview of the biology of raptors and an indication of the current state of knowledge on them.
The book has been completely revised and updated, with 15 years of new data, a section on difficult species-pairs (split-images providing direct contrast), and rearranged in modern field-guide format, making it easy to use and enabling rapid identification of ‘difficult’ raptors.
Birds of Prey of Australia will appeal to a wide range of readers, including ornithologists, raptor biologists, birdwatchers, wildlife rescuers/carers, raptor rehabilitators, zookeepers, naturalists, bushwalkers, ecological consultants, fauna authorities, park rangers, state forestry personnel and students.

Benediction (Plainsong series Book 3), by Kent Haruf

From the beloved and best-selling author of Plainsong and Eventide comes a story of life and death, and the ties that bind, once again set out on the High Plains in Holt, Colorado.

When Dad Lewis is diagnosed with terminal cancer, he and his wife, Mary, must work together to make his final days as comfortable as possible. Their daughter, Lorraine, hastens back from Denver to help look after him; her devotion softens the bitter absence of their estranged son, Frank, but this cannot be willed away and remains a palpable presence for all three of them. Next door, a young girl named Alice moves in with her grandmother and contends with the painful memories that Dad's condition stirs up of her own mother's death. Meanwhile, the town’s newly arrived preacher attempts to mend his strained relationships with his wife and teenaged son, a task that proves all the more challenging when he faces the disdain of his congregation after offering more than they are accustomed to getting on a Sunday morning. And throughout, an elderly widow and her middle-aged daughter do everything they can to ease the pain of their friends and neighbors.

Despite the travails that each of these families faces, together they form bonds strong enough to carry them through the most difficult of times.  Bracing, sad and deeply illuminating, Benediction captures the fullness of life by representing every stage of it, including its extinction, as well as the hopes and dreams that sustain us along the way. Here Kent Haruf gives us his most indelible portrait yet of this small town and reveals, with grace and insight, the compassion, the suffering and, above all, the humanity of its inhabitants.

Amazon.com Review
An Amazon Best Book of the Month, March 2013: Kent Haruf writes about small towns and regular people, but don’t underestimate his ambition. He is writing about life, and to do that he has returned again and again--first with Plainsong, later with Eventide--to the small town of Holt, located on the eastern plains of Colorado. In Benediction, Haruf introduces us to Dad Lewis, a 77-year-old hardware store owner who has just been diagnosed with terminal cancer. The experience of reading Haruf is a slow burn, but as we meet the people who gather around Dad Lewis in his final days we begin to see that this is a book about community, about the things that bind us, as well as the secrets we keep to ourselves. Haruf writes with a tense, quiet realism that elevates life and death, granting both a dignity that touches on poetry. --Chris Schluep

From Booklist
*Starred Review* From the terroir and populace of his native American West, the author of Plainsong (1999) and Eventide (2004) again draws a story elegant in its simple telling and remarkable in its authentic capture of universal human emotions. The last, dying days of old Dad Lewis supply the framework for this sober yet reverberant novel. Dad owns a store in a small Colorado town, and his terminal illness draws out the compassion of his adult daughter, whom Dad wants to take over his business upon his imminent passing, and sparks an arousal in his long-devoted wife to seek some degree of resolution to an unhealed family wound. Dad’s closing days also stir emotions in other town residents who are in Dad’s realm of acquaintances, including the girl who moved in next door to stay with her grandmother and whose memories of her deceased mother remain raw; the new minister in town who suddenly rebels against the reluctance of his congregation to think about new ideas; and a mother and daughter, the former advanced in years and the latter now in middle age, who still confront traits in each other that they would just as soon not see. --Brad Hooper

Review
“His finest-tuned tale yet. . . . There is a deep, satisfying music to this book, as Haruf weaves between such a large cast of characters in so small a space. . . . Strangely, wonderfully, the moment of a man's passing can be a blessing in the way it brings people together. Benediction recreates this powerful moment so gracefully it is easy to forget that, like [the town of] Holt, it is a world created by one man.” —John Freeman, The Boston Globe

"A quiet and profound statement about endings, about change and death and endurance, and about the courage it takes to finally let go. . . . What's remarkable is Haruf's ability, once again, to square quotidian events with what it means to be alive and bound in ordinary pleasure with ordinary people [with] a matter-of-fact tone, with spare declarative sentences and plain-speak among the characters that is, in its bare-bones clarity, often heartbreakingly authentic."  —Debra Gwartney, The Oregonian

“What Haruf makes of this patch of ground is magic [and] Benediction spreads its blessing over the entire town.  Haruf isn’t interested in evil so much as the frailties that defeat us – loneliness, a failure to connect with one another, the lack of courage to change. . . . [He] makes us admire his characters’ ability not only to carry on but also to enjoy simple pleasures.” —Dan Cryer, San Francisco Chronicle

“We’ve waited a long time for an invitation back to Holt, home to Kent Haruf’s novels. . . He may be the most muted master in American fiction [and] Benediction seems designed to catch the sound of those fleeting good moments [with] scenes Hemingway might have written had he survived.” —Ron Charles, Washington Post

"A lovely book, surprisingly rich in character and event without any sense of being crowded. . . . Haruf is a master in summing up the drama that already exists in life, if you just pay attention." —Harper Barnes, St. Louis Post-Dispatch

“Absorbing [and] evocative. . . . Haruf doesn’t offer us any facile reconciliations. The blessings in Benediction are [not] easily won. For that very reason they are all the more believable and all the more unforgettable.” – Richard Wakefield, The Seattle Times

"Splendid. . . . As the expertly crafted structure of Benediction emerges, it becomes clear that [Haruf's many] characters trace the arc of a life. . . as we join [a good but flawed man] in his deepening appreciation for those around him, while counting down the remaining hours, in his life and our own." —Mike Fischer, Portland Press Herald

“Remarkable. . . . Haruf paints indelible portraits of drifting days that reveal unexpected blessings. . . . We may not always recognize the best moments—maybe because they are often as simple as eating off the good china at a backyard picnic—but he understands their power to make us human.” —Connie Ogle, The Miami Herald

"Itself a blessing. . . spare and unencumbered. . . . Haruf's great skill is in describing the plain ways of people who live in small places [and the war] going on between good and evil that we recognize as part of our nature. This is what makes Benediction a universal story, not a hometown tale." —Michael D. Langan, The Buffalo News

“Quiet, and intimate, and beautiful.” —Lisa McLendon, The Wichita Eagle

“If Hemingway had had more soul, he would've written a book like Benediction.” —Emma Broder, The Chicago Maroon

"Incisive, elegiac, and rhetorically rich. . . his finest expression yet of an aesthetic vision that, in spite of its exacting verisimilitude, achieves a mythic dimension rare in contemporary fiction. . . . Haruf's art is rigorous but transparent. Scene after scene, we appreciate that we are in the hands of a master of complex storytelling disguised as simple observation. . . . Reading [him], I am often reminded of the great Russian realists, who have a similar compressed intensity and who spent much of their writing time examining the lives of ordinary people living in small communities in wide-open spaces." —Kevin Stevens, The Dublin Review of Books

“Benediction suggests there’s no end to the stories Haruf can tell about Holt or to the tough, gorgeous language he can summon in the process.” —Paul Elie, The New York Times Book Review

“Haruf is the master of what one of his characters calls 'the precious ordinary'. . . . With understated language and startling emotional insight, he makes you feel awe at even the most basic of human gestures.” —Ben Goldstein, Esquire

“Grace and restraint are abiding virtues in Haruf's fiction, and they resume their place of privilege in his new work. . . . For readers looking for the rewards of an intimate, meditative story, it is indeed a blessing.” —Karen R. Long, The Cleveland Plain Dealer

“Haruf is maguslike in his gifts. . . to illuminate the inevitable ways in which tributary lives meander toward confluence. . . . Perhaps not since Hemingway has an American author triggered such reader empathy with so little reliance on the subjectivity of his characters. . . . [This] is a modestly wrought wonder from one of our finest living writers.” —Bruce Machart, The Houston Chronicle

“Both sad and surprisingly uplifting in its honest and skillful examination of death, families and friendship.” —Jason Swensen, Deseret News

“As Haruf's precise details accrue, a reader gains perspective: This is the story of a man's life, and the town where he spent it, and the people who try to ease its end. . . . His sentences have the elegance of Hemingway's early work [and his] determined realism, which admits that not all of our past actions or the reasons behind them are knowable, even to ourselves, is one of the book's satisfactions.” —John Reimringer, The Minneapolis Star-Tribune

“Reverberant… From the terroir and populace of his native American West, the author of Plainsong and Eventide again draws a story elegant in its simple telling and remarkable in its authentic capture of universal human emotions.” – Brad Hooper, Booklist

Beautifully told story of life in a small town on the Great Plains
By M. C. Crammer
In this novel in what must now be considered Haruf's "Holt, Colorado" series, the central character is "Dad" Lewis, a man at the end of his life. With the assistance of a hospice nurse, Dad is being cared for at home by his wife and middle-aged daughter in his final weeks. Although a central theme is Dad's internal process of coming to peace with his life and impending death, a number of other stories are told simultaneously: The son is estranged from the family, and no-one even knows where he is; a minister who already has a troubled past gets into further trouble with his church in Holt; a neighbor is raising her grand-daughter; a mother and daughter who are friends of the Lewis family have their own stories to tell.

Kent Haruf is a masterful writer and story teller. Any one of his characters in this book could be the basis for his next book -- I can hardly wait to find out which one he will choose for his next Holt novel, as you want to know more about each of his characters: Not a single one is boring or two dimensional. As someone who grew up in eastern Nebraska, and traveled quite a bit in the area he describes (I have a number of cousins in western Nebraska), I thought he got the character of the people right -- slow to change but willing to change if convinced that the change is needed; kind but taciturn; a sense of community but ruggedly independent; generally fair and principled, but sometimes behaving badly.

My only complaint (other than the fact that my review copy was missing 9 pages!) is that Haruf has adopted the contemporary fad of not using quotation marks. For most dialogue, I managed to separate dialogue from description without the quotation marks, but there were paragraphs where I had to reread a few sentences to figure out if someone was speaking, and if so, who. They invented quotation marks for a good reason: it makes it so much easier to read a book! In a day when fewer people are reading, why go out of your way to make reading harder because it looks more literary? Haruf is a brilliant writer and doesn't need to worry about publishing fads.

Treasuring The Simple Things
By Someone Else
BENEDICTION is a pensive novel about the dailiness of life in a small town, the neighborly kindnesses as well as the regrets and missed chances that haunt its residents. At times it's more a lament than a benediction.

"Dad" Lewis is the central character. He only has a few weeks left to live. Knowing this makes him treasure events and places that once seemed ordinary and unspecial. As his life draws to a close, he allows himself to revert to a childlike authenticity. He finally tells people what he really thinks of them, and he gives in to emotions we learn to suppress and deny as we grow into adulthood. He lets himself weep as he contemplates the loss of life's most basic contentments -- the rhythms of our days that seem commonplace, but become dear as the end approaches.

This is not a novel you read for plot. There's not much action or conflict or conquest. I enjoyed it for the simple genius of the writing and the author's ability to excavate the human heart and mind. The approach is somewhat similar to Sherwood Anderson's WINESBURG, OHIO, although Haruf's prose is more restrained and pleasurable to read. Both books examine the secret longings and regrets of small-town folk, and the narrowing of opportunities imposed by small-town attitudes.

I recommend BENEDICTION for readers seeking the most realistic fiction you're likely to find. Kent Haruf is peerless in his ability to observe the poignancy and pathos of human experience and commit it to paper in its barest essence.

NOTE: Kent Haruf does not use quotation marks in his dialogue. Usually this is something that would bother me quite a bit. However, Haruf's style is so clean and simple that it wasn't a problem for me with this particular book.

Death, Life and Now
By Mark Stevens
"Benediction" says we all matter. Each of us. You.

"Benediction" looks at our faint footprints on the surface of the earth and says, quite simply, that each step counts.

Kent Haruf takes us back to Holt, Colorado. We return to the land of "Plainsong" and "Eventide," but there are only a couple of faint references to the characters who absorbed our attention during those two novels. If "Benediction" is the cap on a trilogy (and Kent Haruf says it's really not), then it's a trilogy by landscape, not character.

Except the landscape, out in eastern Colorado, seems to form the character. These are hard, rough-hewn lives. You hear the car tires crunch on the gravel streets, feel the wind blow and the sun beat down. If you live out here, you work.

Haruf doesn't judge. He's neutral. He's a documentarian. There are few books like these three (the only three of Haruf's that I've read) that will give you that in-the-moment feeling. The tone of the words says, "here is what's happening and there's nothing I can do to change it." The plot, if that's even the right word, is as organic as the soil. By the way, while "Benediction" feels even more terse and tidy than "Plainsong" (and that's saying something), there is also an awful lot of plot in "Benediction."

We are never ahead of the characters, nor are we encouraged to think about them one way or another. Haruf is their silent, stalking shadow. He doesn't push them from behind or tug them from in front.

Their actions are their actions, driven by how they think and their internal moral compass.

In "Benediction," the story settles on dying "Dad" Lewis and his wife Mary and their children, one estranged son and one daughter. "Benediction" encircles the lives of others in town, too, and we leave Dad and his decline for many pages at a time. He's in hospice; the outcome here is not in question.

There are only a few references that will place this story in any given period of time and those are so vague that "Benediction" takes on a dream-like quality. Not one commercial product (like the make and model of pickup) is recorded.

Haruf's detailed, up-close style manages to make the characters both intimate and universal at the same time. It's as if Haruf has the code to each character's soul.

For me, the most powerful ideas in "Benediction" revolve around the contrast between Dad's apparently secular life and the rebellion sparked in church when a new pastor suggests a radical form of international forgiveness. The pastor's idea is clearly just a theoretical, rhetorical question designed to test the congregation's appetite for peace, but even the concept is enough to trigger trouble. Imagine that.

At the same time we see Dad do the small things that suggest true community comes one conversation and one gesture at a time.

Banish the thought if you think any of this might dip, just for a flash, into sentimentality. Haruf never wavers. Death is death. Life is life. Now is now. Despite the use of a religious term for the title, "Benediction" is no ode to the power of a church. It's about the power of the individual. Haruf's spare, precise prose celebrates each person. We see individuals because Haruf sees distinct people in sharp relief.

"Benediction" is both bleak and beautiful, but I'll remember the beautiful and the reverence this novel holds for each human being.

"Benediction" makes us feel a bit better about ourselves.

Making Anti-Racial Discrimination Law: A Comparative History of Social Action and Anti-Racial Discrimination Law, by Iyiola Solanke

Making Anti-Racial Discrimination Law examines the evolution of anti-racial discrimination law from a socio-legal perspective. Taking a comparative and interdisciplinary approach, the book does not simply look at race and society or race and law but brings these areas together by drawing out the tension in the process, in different countries, by which race becomes a policy issue which is subsequently regulated by law. Moving beyond traditional social movement theory to include the extreme right wing as a social actor, the study identifies the role of extreme right wing confrontation in agenda setting and law-making, a feature often neglected in studies of social action. In so doing, it identifies the influence of both the extreme right and liberalism on anti-racial discrimination law. Focusing primarily on Great Britain and Germany, the book also demonstrates how national politics feeds into EU policy and identifies some of the challenges in creating a high and uniform level of protection against racial discrimination throughout the EU.

Using primary archival materials from Germany and the UK, the empirical richness of this book constitutes a valuable contribution to the field of anti-racial discrimination law, at both undergraduate and postgraduate level. The book will interest specialists and academics in law, sociology and political science as well as non-specialists, who will find this study stimulating and useful to expand their knowledge of anti-racial discrimination law or pursue teaching goals, policy objectives and reform agendas.

One of a Kind Book on Race and Race Discrimination Law in Europe
By AinBmore
If you would like to read a comprehensive, well-written, meticulous analysis of race that uses a critical race theory perspective, then this is the book for you. Very thought provoking read especially when you compare the ways in which Britain and Germany perpetuate, attempt to confront and inaptly deal with racial subordination and violence. This explanation of how race plays out in the European context is eye-opening for understanding how the stigmatization of blackness is endemic and how legal remedies that seem ideal in theory are subverted by politics and denial. Too bad the publishers have not made this available in paperback. The price is just too steep.

The bar, on the seventh floor of the Park Hyatt hotel, had its doors propped wide, as if boasting about the suddenly dazzling April weather.

We stepped onto the bar's patio—an urban garden illuminated by the surrounding city lights.

"Spring is officially here," I said. "And God, am I ready for it."

The thing about spring in Chicago is that it's fast and fickle. A balmy, sixty-eight-degree Friday like tonight could easily turn into a brittle, thirty-five-degree Saturday. Which is why Chicagoans always clutch at those spring nights. Which is why a night like that can make you do crazy things.

The maître d', a European type in a slim black suit, spotted the woman I was with, Jane Augustine, and came hustling over. "Ms. Augustine," he said, "welcome." He looked at me. "And Miss…"

"Miss Izzy McNeil," Jane said, beaming her perfect newscaster smile. "The best entertainment lawyer in the city."

The maître d' laughed, gave me a quick once-over. A little smile played at the corner of his mouth. "A lawyer. So you're smart, too?"

"If so, I'm a smart person who's out of a job." I'd been looking for six months.

"Maybe not for long," Jane said.

"Meaning?"

Jane shrugged coquettishly as the maître d' led us over the slate floor to a table at the edge of the patio.

"Our best spot," he said, "for the best." He put two leather-bound menus on the table and left.

We sat. "Do you always get this kind of treatment?" I asked.

Jane swung her shiny black hair over her shoulder and looked at me with her famous mauve-blue eyes. "The treatment was all about Izzy McNeil. He's hot for you."

I turned and glanced. The maître d' was watching us. Okay, I admit, he did seem to be watching me. "I think I'm giving off some sort of scent now that I'm single again."

Jane scoffed. "I can't stop giving off that scent, and I'm married."

I studied Jane as the waiter took our drink orders. With her long, perfect body tucked into her perfect red suit, she looked every inch the tough journalist she was, but the more I got to know her, the more I listened to her, the more I was intrigued by the many facets of Jane. When I was lead counsel for Pickett Enterprises, the Midwest media conglomerate that owned the station where Jane worked, I'd negotiated her contract. And while she was definitely the wisecracking, tough-talking, shoot-straight journalist I'd heard about, I had also seen some surprising cracks in the veneer of her confidence. And on top of that was the sexiness. The more I knew her, the more I noticed she simply steeped in it.

"Seriously," Jane said. "I know you're bummed that you and Sam had that little problem—"

"Yeah, that little problem," I interrupted her. "We're seeing each other occasionally, but it's just not the same."

Six months ago, my fiancé, Sam, disappeared with thirty million dollars' worth of property owned by my client, Forester Pickett, the CEO of Pickett Enterprises, and it happened on precisely the same night Forester suddenly died. After nearly two agonizing weeks that seemed like two years—weeks in which my world had not only been turned upside down, but also shaken and twisted and battered and bruised; weeks during which I learned so many secrets about the people in my life I thought I'd been dropped into someone else's life—the matter had been resolved and Sam was back in town. But I'd lost all my legal work in the process and essentially had been ushered out the back door of my law firm. As for Sam and me, the wedding was off, and we weren't exactly back together.

"Whatever," Jane said. "You should enjoy being single. You're dating other people, right?"

"A little." I rubbed the spot on my left hand where my engagement ring used to rest. It felt as if the skin were slightly dented, holding a spot in case I decided to put it on again. "There's a guy named Grady, who I'm friends with, and we go out occasionally, but he wants to get serious, and I really don't. So mostly, I've been licking my wounds."

"Enough of that! Let someone do the licking for you. With that red hair and that ass, you could get anyone you want."

I laughed. "A guy at the coffee shop asked me out the other day."

"How old was he?"

"About forty."

"That'll work. As long as he's eighteen, he's doable."

The waiter stepped up to our table with two glasses of wine.

"Would you go out with her?" Jane asked him.

"Uh…" he said, clearly embarrassed.

"Jane, stop." But the truth was I was thrilled with the randomly warm night, with the hint that the world was somehow turning faster than usual.

"No, honestly." Jane looked him up and down like a breeder sizing up a horse for stud. "Are you single?"

The waiter was a Hispanic guy with big, black eyes. "Yeah."

"And would you go out with her?" Jane pointed at me.

He grinned. "Oh, yeah."

"Perfect!" Jane patted him on the hip. "She'll get your number before we leave."

I dropped my head in my hands as the waiter walked away, chuckling.

"What?" she said. "Now you've got three dates when you want them—the waiter, the coffee shop dude and that Grady guy. We're working on the maître d' next. I want you to have a whole stable of men."

A few women walked by. One of them gasped. "Jane Augustine!" She rushed over. "I'm so sorry to bother you, but I have to tell you that I love you. We watch you every night."

"Thank you!" Jane extended her hand. "What's your name?"

The woman introduced her friends, and then the compliments poured from her mouth in an unending stream. "Wow, Jane, you're attractive on TV but you're even more gorgeous in person…. You're beautiful…. You're so smart…. You're amazing."

"Oh, gosh, thank you," Jane said to each compliment, giving an earnest bob of the head. "You've made my day." She asked what the woman did for a living, then graciously accepted more compliments when the woman turned the conversation back to Jane.

"How do you do that?" I asked when they left.

"Do what?"

"Act like you're so flattered? I know you've heard that stuff before."

Jane studied me. "How old are you, Izzy?"

"Thirty this summer." I shook my head. "I can't believe I'm going to be thirty."

"Well, I'm two years away from forty, and let me tell you something—when someone tells you you're beautiful, you act like it's the first time you've heard that." She looked at me pointedly. "Because you never know when it'll be the last."

I sipped my wine. It was French, kind of floral and lemony. "How's your new agent?"

"Fantastic. He got me a great contract with Trial TV."

"I've seen the billboards."

Trial TV was a new legal network based in Chicago that was tapping into the old Court TV audience. The billboards, with Jane's smiling face, had been plastered up and down the Kennedy for months.

"It's amazing to be on the ground floor," Jane said. "They've got a reality show on prosecutors that's wild. It's gotten great advance reviews. And we're juicing up trial coverage and making it more exciting. You know, more background on the lawyers and judges, more aggressive commentary on their moves."

"And you'll be anchoring the flagship broadcast each morning." I raised my glass. "It's perfect for you."

Jane had always had a penchant for the legal stories. When she was a reporter, she was known for courting judges and attorneys, so that she was the one they came to whenever there was news. She got her spot as an anchor after she broke a big story about a U.S. Senator from Illinois who was funneling millions of dollars of work to one particular law firm in Chicago. It was Jane who figured out that the head partner at the firm was the senator's mistress.

Jane clinked my glass. "Thanks, Iz." She looked heavenward for a second, her eyes big and excited. "It's like a dream come true, because if I was going to keep climbing the nightly news ladder, I'd have to try and go to New York and land the national news. But Zac and I want to stay here. I love this city so much."

Jane looked around, as if taking in the whole town with her gaze. This particular part of Chicago—the Gold Coast and the Mag Mile—had grown like a weed lately as a plethora of luxury hotel-condo buildings sprang into the skyline.

"Plus, aside from getting up early, it's going to be great hours," Jane continued. "I don't have to work nights anymore, and trials stop for the weekends. They even stop for holidays."

"Is CJ. going with you?" Jane's current producer was a talented, no-nonsense woman who had worked closely with Jane for years.

She shook her head. "She's staying at Chicagoland TV. That station has been so good to me I didn't want to steal all their top people. Plus, I wanted to step out on my own, start writing more of my own stuff." She gave a chagrined shake of her head. "You know how I got all this?"

"Your new agent?"

"Nope. He only negotiated the contract. It was Forester."

Just like that, my heart sagged. I missed him. Forester had not only been a client, he'd been a mentor, the person who'd given me my start in entertainment law, the person who'd trusted me to represent his beloved company. Eventually, Forester became like a father to me, and his death was still on my mind.

"I miss him, too," Jane said, seeing the look on my face. "Remember how generous he was? He actually introduced me to Ari Adler."

"Wow, and so Ari brought you in." Ari Adler was a media mogul, like Forester, but instead of owning TV and radio stations, newspapers and publishing companies all over the Midwest, as Forester did, Ari Adler was global. His company was the one behind Trial TV.

"Forester knew I loved the law," she said, "so he brought me to dinner with the two of them when Ari was in town."

"Even though he knew it meant he might lose you."

"Exactly." Jane put her glass down and leaned forward on her elbows. "And now I'm bringing you to dinner because I want you."

I blinked. "Excuse me?"

"The launch is Monday. We've been in rehearsals for the last few weeks." She paused, leaned forward some more. "And I want you to start on Monday, too."

"What do you mean?"

"I want you to be a legal analyst."

"Like a reporter?"

"Yeah."

"Are you kidding? I've never worked in the news business. Just on the periphery." And yet as logical as my words sounded, I got a spark of excitement for something new, something totally different.

"We had someone quit today," Jane said. "A female reporter who used to be a lawyer."

"And?"

"Well, let me backtrack. Trial TV has tried to put together a staff that has legal backgrounds in some way, including many of the reporters and producers. We have reporters in each major city to keep their eye on the local trial scenes. You know, interview the lawyers and witnesses, prepare short stories to run on the broadcasts. But one of our Chicago reporters hit the road today."

"Why?"

Jane waved her perfectly manicured hand. "Oh, she's a prima donna who wants everything PC. She couldn't handle our dinosaur deputy news director." Her eyes zeroed in on mine. "But you could. After working with Forester and his crew, you know how to hang with the old-boys network."

"Are you talking an on-air position?"

"Not right away. We'll give you a contributor's contract, and you'll do a little of everything. You'll assist in writing the stories and help with questions when we have guests. But eventually, yeah, I see you on-air."

"Jane, I don't have any media experience."

"You used to give statements on behalf of Pickett Enterprises, and you were good. Either way, the trend in the news is real people with real experience in the areas they're reporting on. Think Nancy Grace—she was a prosecutor before she started at CNN. Or Greta Van Susteren. She practiced law, too."

The spark of excitement I'd felt earlier now flamed into something bigger, brighter. If you'd asked me six months ago what the spring held for me, I would have told you I'd be finishing my thank-you notes after my holiday wedding, and I'd be settling into contented downtime with my husband, Sam. But now Sam wasn't my husband, and things with him—things with my future—were decidedly unclear.

"What would it pay?"

She told me.

"A month?" I blurted.

She laughed. "No, sweetheart, that's a year. TV pays crap. You should know that. You've negotiated the contracts."

"But I'm a lawyer," I said.

"You'd be an analyst and a reporter now."

Just out of principle, I considered saying no. I was a lawyer; I was worth more than that. But the fact was, unless I could find entertainment law work, I was worth almost nothing. I knew nothing else, understood no other legal specialties. I'd been job hunting for months, and trying to make the best of the downtime—visiting the Art Institute, the Museum of Contemporary Art, the Museum of Science and Industry and just about every other museum or landmark Chicago had to offer. But, depressingly, there was no entertainment work up for grabs in the city. Though most Chicago actors and artists started with local lawyers, when they hit it big, they often took their legal work to the coasts. The lawyers who'd had it for years wisely hoarded the business that remained. And, months ago, after the dust had settled after the scandal with Sam, Forester's company had decided to use attorneys from another firm, saying they needed a fresh start and a chance to work with someone new.

I couldn't blame them, but it had left me in the cold. My bank statement had an ever-decreasing balance, teetering toward nothing. I hadn't minded the lack of funds so badly when I couldn't buy new spring clothes, but soon I wouldn't be able to pay my mortgage, and that would be something else altogether.

For the first time in my adult life I was flying without a net. Fear nibbled at my insides, crept its way into my brain. I was buzzing with apprehension. But the job offer from Jane was a ray of calm, clean sunshine breaking through the murky depths of my nerves.

I knew, as the negotiator I used to be, that I should ask Jane a lot of other questions— What would the hours be? What was the insurance like? But in addition to needing the money, I needed—desperately needed—something new in my life.

So I leaned forward, meeting Jane's gaze and those mauve-blue eyes, and said, "I'll do it."

When we left the Park Hyatt, Jane told the waiter where to meet us, and three hours later, when he walked in the club, Jane and I were surrounded by five other guys.

Darn good mystery but boring romantic complications
By Neal Reynolds
Basically, there's a whole lot to like in these first two novels. I especially enjoyed the continued conflict with Detective Vaughn and the detective subplot with John Mayburn. However, the on and off relationship with Sam and the other two guys were a bit of a turnoff to me...just too many romantic scenes slowing down the action. Both of the first two books are good reads though, and I'm looking forward to the 3rd.

Great Series
By A Reader
Like the first book in the series, this was another that was impossible to put down -- I read it in a single day, which is amazing considering how long the book is.

While I enjoyed it almost as much as the first, I had to go with a four-star rating because of all the Sam stuff, which got boring and repetitive halfway through the book. I understand the author wanting to keep some semblence of a relationship going for the series, but it was too much of the same thing over and over again -- Sam and Izzy can't decide where they stand, they go on a date, they rekindle old feelings, something happens that gets one of them angry or upset, they fight, lather, rinse, repeat. A few times would've been fine...but this seemed to be happening every chapter or two and it got old real fast.

Looking forward to starting the third book of the series!

Glad I "red" it, by Wanda B. Red
By Wanda B. Red
The second Izzy McNeil mystery measures up to the first. The (double) plot is complicated but well managed; though long, the book is crisply written and very enjoyable. I'm looking forward to the third installment, and hoping for more.

I agree with other reviewers here that the romantic subplot (especially with Sam) grows tiresome. I also find it a bit strange that Izzy preens herself on her fidelity all the while concealing from Sam that she is sleeping with another guy and contemplating a relationship with a third. Still, I don't think Laura Caldwell was aiming for dramatic irony here -- nor in Izzy's puerile paean to passion in the book's final pages.

Caldwell is great, though, (as in the first book in the series) at revealing her heroine's insecurities. Isabel is clearly a great beauty, but she can break out in a major and embarrassing attack of perspiration. Her hi jinx in the lingerie shop where she agrees to spy for the PI John Mayburn are also quite enjoyable. Once again, she barely gets away with murder.
