Thorough, Insightful, Readable

This book possesses two advantages over other accounts: 1) as a product of the Center for Nonproliferation Studies of the Monterey Institute, which has the leading archive of information on the subject, it offers rich, precisely documented detail; and 2) besides discussing how terrorists might acquire an existing nuclear weapon or fashion their own (Faces #1 and 2), it offers in-depth treatments of terrorist threats to nuclear plants (#3) and the use of radiological weapons (#4). A more comprehensive approach than one focussed just on the bomb, this leads to superior analysis and recommendations regarding ranking of priority issues and solutions. I found of special value the authors' many imaginative proposals, e.g., encourage Japan to build a strategic reserve of low-enriched uranium from Russia rather than to proceed with its plutonium separation plant. The authors' discussion of the gaping holes in the approaches of the U.S. Government and other governments should cause us to treat with skepticism our leaders' avowals of how seriously they take these threats.

If you are looking for a reliable, comprehensive, understandable, and thoughtful guide to nuclear terrorism, I recommend this book.

Wow, What a Find

Richly researched and clearly written, this book is a find! Has just the right amount of detail to provide the reader with the degrees of difficulty in conducting nuclear terrorism but does not overwhelm.
The "four faces" of nuclear terrorism described in the book are (1) theft of a nuclear weapon, (2) construction of a nuclear weapon (3) damage to a nuclear reactor or facility, and (4) construction of a radiological dispersal device. The authors succintly analyze each of these scenarios and clearly present the challenges involved by terrorists attempting each task. Devoid of hype, absent political rhetoric, the book is superb at providing the general reader with an appreciation for the actual risks America faces from this area. Particularly recommended for those engaged in the profession of CBRN defense.
Apparently out of print which is a shame, try to get your hands on a copy and read it.

Thinking About the Unthinkable

Ferguson and Potter, writing on behalf of the Center for Non Proliferation Studies, have written an easy to read primer on the faces of Nuclear Terrorism. The authors lead the reader through the most likely threats one small step at a time with great patience.

If there is one lesson from the past two decades of post cold war terrorism ( it has been 10 years since Bin Laden declared war) it is that Bin Laden and other terrorists are highly adaptable, patient, resourceful, capable of planning and executing complex operations and rentless.

Perhaps the most worrysome aspect of the current ( spring 07) situation is that they seem too comfortable in Pakistan, a nation with nuclear weapons. Although they have missed on several attempts to kill Pakistan's leader his run of bad luck may end. If the US is unable to invervene we may have a situation far worse than N Korea or Iran in that Pakistan has a sizable inventory of proven nuclear weapons, a nuclear India with whom they have fought for decades and one of the more sophisticated air forces in the region.

They have looked into the future abyss and come back with some much needed information, stripped of the usual agendas and dramatics. Of course the prospect of nuclear terrorism comes with enough drama for any sane person. There are of course no simple answers.

The threats are, as the authors describe only too real. How we deal with them may determine the world which our children and grandchildren inherit, assuming that they survive. Clear thinking about the unthinkable.

As a people we suffer from a narrowed view of the challenges which face us over the next decade. Perhaps it is due to our fixation on the war in Iraq, a mere sideshow of the global conflict and perhaps it is that the reality is simply too much to face. As "The Great Reckoning" anticipated 20 years ago, emerging technologies have shifted the balance of power or terror from the large superpowers to the small stateless groups.

Probably the best general interest book on the subject.

Highly recommended.

About the Author
Kate Wilhelm is the author of dozens of novels and short-story collections. Among them are the science fiction classic "Where Late the Sweet Birds Sang", the Constance and Charlie mysteries, and "The Good Children." The recipient of many honors--the Prix Apollo, the Hugo Award, three Nebula Awards, and the Kurd Lasswitz Award--Ms. Wilhelm, along with her husband, Damon Knight, received an honorary Doctor of Humanities degree from Michigan State University in recognition of their many years as instructors for the Clarion workshop in Fantasy and Science Fiction. Born in Ohio and raised in Kentucky, Ms. Wilhelm now lives in Eugene, Oregon, her home of many years.

"We're surrounded by illusions."

Kate Wilhelm's "The Price of Silence" takes place in the small desert town of Brindle, Oregon. Todd Fielding and her husband, Barney, are low on funds and Todd is thrilled when she gets a job at a small newspaper, the "Brindle Times." She edits, does layout, and troubleshoots computer problems for the eighty-year-old publisher, Ruth Ann Colonna. In addition to her regular duties, Todd is helping Ruth Ann with a special centennial edition of the newspaper that will deal with the history of Brindle. It seems that back in 1888, there was a fire in an inn that killed four people, including a young woman named Janey. Was the fire deliberately set or was it an accident? Ruth has uncovered sources that reveal shocking secrets about the circumstances surrounding the tragedy. She intends to tell the town the truth about what really happened and why.

When Todd starts working at the newspaper, she is startled to learn that a series of teenaged girls have disappeared over the years and, recently, a fourteen-year-old named Jodie Schuster has just gone missing. Did these girls run away or were they abducted? Todd senses that there is an evil presence in Brindle, and she stirs up a hornet's nest when she decides to write a series of articles about the disappearances.

"The Price of Silence" is a solid psychological mystery with spooky supernatural elements. At night when she is staying in Brindle, Todd occasionally feels a tremendous chill spreading throughout her body. After the chill subsides, she feels depressed and even breaks down in tears. As time goes on, Todd believes that she is experiencing a paranormal phenomenon in which a ghostly presence is attempting to communicate with her.

Wilhelm's characters include the aforementioned Ruth Ann, who is a crusty, brilliant, and forceful woman. Her son, Johnny, manages the newspaper, and he bitterly resents Todd. He would love to get rid of this nosy interloper, but Ruth Ann will not hear of it, since Todd's skill with computers and her insightful reporting quickly make her an indispensable asset. Todd's doting husband, Barney, a doctoral candidate in philosophy, fears for his wife's safety when she begins to receive hate mail. His fears prove well founded when someone makes an attempt on Todd's life.

"The Price of Silence" effectively deals with the themes of complacency, family dysfunction, and courage under pressure. The inhabitants of Brindle would prefer to believe that all is well in their town, although the evidence points to the possibility that there is a dangerous predator in their midst. It takes a fearless outsider, Todd Fielding, to shake things up, but can she find the killer before she becomes his next victim? Wilhelm maintains a high level of suspense, and she skillfully describes a place where people would rather live in a world of illusion than face unpleasant truths.

terrific amateur sleuth

Having lost her job and knowing that her beloved spouse Barney has two years to go on his dissertation, Oregonian Todd Fielding obtains work on the Brindle Times as the newspaper's octogenarian owner Ruth Ann Coleman knows her paper needs a computer expert journalist. Though on the other side of the mountain from where Barney attends school and teaches, Todd accepts the position that comes with a rent free house. Barney's faculty advisor arranges his schedule so that they can spend most of each week together.

Todd and Ruth Ann become close confidents as the newcomer's work and ethics are excellent. When a high school girl Jodie Schuster vanishes, Todd questions the local cops who blow her off insisting she is just another bored teen runaway. Todd investigates further and soon finds a shocking pattern of missing teenage females over recent years with law enforcement doing nothing except yawning. With Ruth Ann providing an identical but much older pattern of disappearances, the two women investigate not realizing the danger from a town icon who wants his predatory nature to remain secret.

This is a terrific amateur sleuth tale that enables the audience to first appreciate the strong relationships between Todd and Barney (in spite of a sexual female prowler), and Todd and Ruth Ann (the "cold" air and the recognition the paper is the elderly woman's "baby"). Once the tale switches to the amateurs sleuth investigation, fans obtain a fantastic mystery as the two journalists struggle to uncover who is behind the abductions of recent note and who got away with the first generation killings under the watch of Ruth Ann's late father. Kate Wilhelm writes a terrific thriller that hopefully will have sequels set in Brindle, Oregon.

Engaging, but not her best

Wilhelm is an excellent writer, and a master of psychological suspense. This book is no exception. However, I found it a little less satisfying than her best; a couple of the characters didn't quite ring true.

The plot is one Wilhelm has used a couple of times before: an attractive and intelligent young person who is at loose ends as to what to do with herself, and not quite sure of her life's direction, winds up through chance circumstances in a small town where something is deeply wrong, and no one wants to talk about it.

That's part of the problem I had with this book, though; while in past books such as "Skeletons," the secret has had to do with the past and is hidden by an older generation, in this book, the problem is ongoing and yet people are still ignoring it. Teenage girls keep disappearing - and no one pursues them or suspects them of anything other than running away. While that might have been the case half a century ago, in these days of entire organizations built around missing children, and pictures of missing children on every milk carton, and TV shows about searching for missing people, it just didn't seem likely to me that in a single village, 5 or more teenage girls would disappear and no one would be raising a stink, not even their parents, until our protagonist appears. And that in a relatively small town, no one prior to her would have noticed the similarities between the girls, nor figured out what other things were going on right when the disappearances started.

It also seems unlikely to me that the kidnapper could be doing the kinds of things they are doing, and not have other abnormalities show up in their behavior or personalities, that no one else would ever think that there was anything odd or unusual in the way this person behaves or things they say. (I'm not giving away who it was; that's why I'm avoiding saying she or he.) I think that people who are this sick show signs of the sickness in more than one way and generally aren't able to completely compartmentalize their lives. It's one thing if the person is a loner and doesn't associate with their neighbors at all, so that no one ever talks to them much; it's different if the person has a regular job and talks to many people every day and goes to social events: some other sign that something is WRONG with this person would show up. So I found the characterization of this person a little unrealistic, and the behavior of the neighbors a bit unbelievable.

Nonetheless, it's a well-written story and lots of action for our heroine and her husband. And I know that many people like this kind of suspense and think that there ARE completely hidden monsters among us, and those people won't have the reservations I had about the realisticness of the villain.

How is your inner child doing. We did so many wrongs in live to our inner child that little one that was long forgotten and still hurts. It is time to change that and make peace with that little one inside of each of us. And get a better understanding of yourself. This is healing for the soul. Read this book and make peace with yourself.

Lawton's engrossing sixth entry but the first chronologically in his Inspector Troy thriller series (Black Out, etc.) chronicles the major events leading up to WWII--Germany's annexation of Austria, Chamberlain's peace efforts, Kristallnacht--while providing a disturbing picture of anti-Semitism and class frictions in England at the time. As part of Scotland Yard's murder squad, Insp. Frederick Troy investigates a series of slayings of London rabbis, but various subplots equally intrigue, notably one that unfolds in an internment camp for Germans, Jews and foreigners--including Troy's Austrian-born brother, Rod--rounded up after Britain's entry into the war. At one point, Troy and a lady friend discover the "aphrodisia of war" in Hyde Park, a spot popular with couples for copulation during the blitz. Lawton does a fine job of incorporating such lesser known period details into his saga, though some readers may find he relies too often on deus ex machina for their taste. (Nov.)

A stunner of a read

I received a pre-publication copy of this book amongst six. Being in the US, I had never seen Lawton's work, so I picked it, and was immediately sucked into the time and place. Lawton's characters are human, well-developed and fascinating; his descriptions of setting and events at the time superb. Having a real affection for the UK, I was immediately drawn into the dialogs, at times with dictionary in hand. Be assured, I will read the rest - if I can find them here!

Inspector Troy at the Beginning, 1938-1940

Second Violin is the sixth book in John Lawton's Inspector Troy series (see for example, Bluffing Mr. Churchill (Frederick Troy Novels)). The events in this book occur chronologically earlier than the previous books in the series. (For that reason, I read this book first, which may or may not be the best way to enjoy this book). The story begins in Austria with Hitler's Anschluss in 1938 and ends with the Battle of Britain in the autumn of 1940.

Frederick Troy is a sergeant in Scotland Yard's elite murder squad and Second Violin tells the reader how got there. Troy is the son of newspaper lord and Russian émigré Alexei Troy. He could have done anything (or nothing at all, for that matter), but he chose to become a beat cop. The denizens of Stepney Green, his patrol beat, see him as a toff out slumming.

Frederick Troy's brother, Roderick, is a foreign correspondent for their father's paper. He witnesses the horrible events of Kristallnacht in Austria before being put on a plane and sent packing by the Nazis. While brother Frederick is assigned police duty rounding up aliens for internment, Rod he finds himself more directly involved in the camps than anyone imagined possible. Freddie manages to take on a murder investigation when three rabbis turn up dead.

In perhaps the book's strongest element, Lawton examines the brutal treatment of Jews in Austria through one Josef Hummel, tailor, and the subsequent rounding up and internment of aliens, including not only Hummel, but also long-time London residents who turn out to have been born in a foreign country.

While I recommend reading this book and intend to read other books in the series, I cannot give Second Violin five full stars. Lawton jams too many disparate story lines and a few stand alone bits (like Sigmund Freud) that leave the reader feeling a bit disjointed. (I should also add that it may be that some of the things that seem like loose ends, but may not be so untidy if one has read the previous books in the series). I also found that reading this book made a nice companion for the most excellent Foyle's War: Set 1 (The German Woman / The White Feather / A Lesson In Murder / Eagle Day) TV series.

One Book but Two Stories

The first half of this "Troy" prequel is a well written historical narrative of what went on in Germany just prior to the start of WW2 and Vienna just before and after the "Anschluss". Mostly it centers on a group of middle class tailors who are longtime Austrian Jews. It also follows the changing opinions of the different English classes as they debate among themselves the 'surrender' of Czechoslovakia to Hitler by Chamberlain to try and prevent the coming war. It's starkly brought home in the discussion that go on in the Troy and Stilton households. Lawton does a fine job of trying to separate out the 'bad' Nazis from the 'good' ones and show the fear that a mob with power behind it can create (i.e. the Brownshirts of the SA) as the 'good people' look away.

The second half is more of a pulling together of a lot of threads that show up in the previous five books. This being the sixth book published but the first in chronological order. We get a sense of Troy's relationship with his father and brother and the families ambivalence if not downright displeasure of Troy becoming a 'copper'. The problem is that the mystery of the murders that is supposed to hold the second half together is very threadbare. After the third murder you get the sense of what's going on and why; and the sequence leading up to the death of the murderer (without revealing who it was) is like the air going out of a balloon versus an exploding firecracker.

It's as if Lawton, while sitting in his little hilltop cottage in Derbyshire, "have I made any mistakes when I've written about what happened to Troy in his early days or presaged something that would happen later?". OK, "maybe I should write a 'first book' so as to fill out Troy's time as a constable and his start at Scotland Yard". Well it reads just like a full resume after you've read the summary, but that doesn't make it a good novel. Considering all the room between some of the books he's still got a lot more to explain, but, I'd rather just have some good 'thrillers' and less biographical verbiage.

A pleasure

I love reading about Emily Carr, and this is the first biographical book I read. While it does begin in her childhood, it concetrates on her time in the U.K, studying around the turn of the century. To read other parts in more detail you might need to read Klee Wyck or The Book of Small. Or just buy the book of all her writing in one.
I really enjoy her honest style of writing, the way she saw things and said what was on her mind. She must have driven her more proper sisters nuts. She's a wonderful example of what you can do if you put your mind to it, especially as a woman back in that day and age. A great read whether you're an artist or just interested in autobiographies.

The autobiography of one of Canada's historical treasures

I read this book because I hoped it might give me some insight into the mind of Emily Carr. At the time, I was doing a semester-long independent research project on Carr as part of a college-level class concerning world-famous women artists. Through the project, I'd become extremely intrigued by Carr; I'd never heard of her before. I soon learned that she is an icon of Canadian cultural history; virtually every child in Canada knows about her and many children are still required to read her book "Klee Wyck," which is an authentic early primary resource about the First Nation peoples of the Canadian Pacific Northwest.

Before I'd read this autobiography, I'd already read a number of biographies and research articles about Carr. I'd found a wealth of secondary research material about this important Canadian artist in my university library. Despite already finishing a few biographies, I knew that it would be invaluable to read about Carr's life in her own words. So, I bought this book and read it even though I already knew a great deal about the details of Carr's life as it has been studied and analyzed by scholars.

When the autobiography arrived, I didn't know what to expect, but I was very pleasantly surprised. I did not have to read the book thoroughly or completely--in fact, I set out to only read bits and pieces here and there--but I ended up reading the whole thing, beginning to end, because I found the work to be hauntingly familiar yet rather otherworldly. It took me on an odd journey into the mind of a singularly unique woman. I knew how her life would unfold, but I was mesmerized by her gentle and honest way of unveiling her own life story.

I've studied a lot of psychology, psychiatry, and neurology, and I was keen to figure out some kind of amateur diagnosis that might partially explain Carr's odd behaviors and unique talents. Some of her biographers had attempted this; but I failed. Carr is just a marvelous enigma! She probably possesses a mixture on many medical, physical, cultural, and environmental characteristics that set her apart, but also help to make her the odd duck and famous creative genius that she was.

I highly recommend this work to anyone who is charmed by Carr's art or who is interested in delving deeper into the psyche and life history of one of Canada's most famous historical characters.

In retrospect, I believe I made a mistake by starting my study of Emily Carr by reading biographies and scholarly articles. There is nothing like excellent primary source material, and Emily Carr's own autobiography is truthful and captivating. If you want to learn about Carr, the only work you really need is this autobiography. Through her own words, you can catch the essence and soul of this famous multitalented idiosyncratic woman--a woman considered to be one of Canada's historical treasures.

Story of an interesting artist

Despite all odds-- cultural, familial, financial-- Emily Carr became an artist without compromise. She is a very good writer and very insightful. A good book for all who enjoy reading artist's autobiographies, but especially for artists who are now also struggling to maintain their visions.

Sprightly, sexy comedy!

If you are a fan of Kasey Michaels, you will be particularly delighted with this humorous sequel to Silhouette Romance #808 Lion on the Prowl. Max Rafferty, the hero of the previous book, is the cousin of Colin Rafferty, the very British hero of this book. Julia Sutherland, the heroine of Lion on the Prowl, is the best friend and business partner of Holly Hollis, the heroine of this book.
Holly finds herself totally in charge for the very first time of a huge New York fashion show, because her partner, Julia Sutherland Rafferty, a major fashion designer, insists on staying home with her sick five-month-old son. All is controlled chaos, and Holly is proud of her management, until one of the male models doesn't show up. Holly is desperate. This is a show for bridal gowns with top models, and there is no way one of the "brides" can walk out unescorted by a "groom." When the gorgeous male model finally shows at the last second, Holly ignores her strong attraction for him and orders him to drop his pants instantly and get into his tuxedo.
Colin Rafferty has just flown in from Europe and has stopped by to see the fashion show of his new cousin-in-law, Julia, when he's accosted by a stunning little dynamo asking him to strip. It doesn't occur to Colin to say "no" to a woman who fascinates him and is obviously in distress, and he complies, in the process saving the day for the fashion show of his new relative, Julia.
This cute meet sets the stage for a wild romantic ride between two attractive, sympathetic protagonists. There are many funny scenes, and many poignant ones, as well. All of the characters, including the secondary ones, are vivid; the pace is quick, and the emotional depth is great. I found the motivation for Colin's temporary masquerade as a male model well done--quite an accomplishment, since anytime deception is used as a plot device, it can be very tricky to pull off. I also thought Michaels did a very good job with the additional, delicate feat of using the characters, Julia and Max, from the previous book in the series. They very much helped the story, and never upstaged the current hero and heroine. As part of the Silhouette Romance line, this book is, of course, G-rated, with no sexual consummation and only a few heated kisses. But the sexual chemistry is such that it still remains a very exciting romance with lots of sexual tension.

Yet, something within her wanted to take the ultimate chance that she could bring this bachelor to heel.
Cute. That's the word for this story. Everybody's cute. Or gorgeous. No sex, but you don't expect it when you read this ROMANCE series. And yes, there are some funny parts, but I just found this one to be too cute.

Silhouette Romance # 1552 - November 2001

Holly's filling in for her best friend and boss, organizing the highly televised bridal fashion show. Much to her panic, she's missing a male model for a groom. At the last minute, in walks the most gorgeous man Holly's ever seen, and of course, Holly grabs him and starts to undress him to put him in his tux. Collin's not sure what's happening, but he's enjoying the little dynamo's undressing attentions. He's just stopping by to give support to his cousin-in-law (Holly's boss) but finds himself too intrigued to speak up and say that he's not a model. The show is a huge success, and afterward Collin insists Holly join him for a bite to eat, all the while keeping his true identity to himself. It isn't until the next day that Holly discovers that Collin isn't a model and she's hurt that Collin would play that trick on her. Collin tries to make it up to Holly and accidentally blurts out that he's decided that he's going to marry her. This sends Holly running, and Collin fast on her trail.

This is a very fun, witty read. You fall in love with the characters right from that first "drop your pants" moment when Holly undresses Collin for the fashion show. I loved the way Holly kept Collin hopping, and Collin had Holly all twisted up in knots.

A very worthwhile book

Fodor has written a book to be used, not simply read. The first part deals with the theory and physical facts of solar drying, while the second tells how to make a dryer. Next comes a section on preparing food to dry, followed by a brief group of recipes and, finally, some very handy appendices. Fodor writes clearly and handles details well.

If you do any kind of homemaking, preserving, growing of your own food, etc., then you absolutely need to get this book! This will give you low-cost and realistic way to preserve your food naturally and in a way that keeps it tasting great! The step-by-step instructions for building the author's food dryer are top-notch and easy to follow, even for the non-mechanically inclined.

My only wish is that the author had included plans for the other food dryers mentioned, though a quick Google will supply this, so it's not really necessary.

wonderful collection of short stories

Excellent collection by English author. Stories with twists you can sense, and others that come out of nowhere. An excellent read I read before bed as each story doesn't take too long and you can pick up after a few days without missing a beat.
