Bob Marley lives!

It is very refreshing to see and read this little book adapted from Bob Marley's joyous song. The illustrations are delightful and so animated and colorful that the book comes to life for the toddler generation. This book compliments the song beautifully. This is a good way to bring the music of Bob Marley's to a new generation. The young toddler set can't help but sing the verse over and over. Don't worry about a thing cause every little thing is gonna be alright. This is a message for you cause everything gonna be alright. Positive vibrations for your family.Good stuff for young and old families. Get this book and make you child smile and sing.

An Eskimo Kiss to These Writers

In a previous anthology, the editor wrote that he amassed humorous writings from First Nations Canadians to counter the idea that they are dour or tragic. Here, he wants to fight the idea that Natives are asexual. The first chapter deals with downstairs hair and the last deals with an older woman's sexuality, so you know you are in for a ride with this book. The book has slightly more male authors, but it does try to be gender-diverse. The anthology has writings from straight men, straight women, gay men, and a lesbian.

It is fascinating to compare First Nations concerns with those of Native Americans to the south of them. In this country, myriad Native Americans are multiracial, but this book. like many others, separate Metis (mixed-race Native Canadians) from monoracial ones. Here, First Nations members tentatively use the term Two Spirits, almost questioning whether it's just an American thing. In American works, authors say the more traditional and older the American Indian, the more likely they are to accept sexuality and gender diversity. One author here says Canadian elders accuse gays of being inauthentic. This book is not all fun and games: like Native Americans forced to attend boarding schools, the First Nations authors here say they were sexually abused in such schools. (In the chapter on this topic, you couldn't really tell the gender of the author, and I'm thinking that was purposely done.) In the same way that some differentiate between Native Alaskans and those in the lower 48, this work suggests that Inuits and First Nations people may seem themselves as being separate groups.

I'm an African American and the subjects mentioned here were soooo different from those brought up in my communities. These Natives feared being dismissed as asexual whereas Blacks resent being deemed oversexed. One author here said Natives are trying to learn to be proud of flat bottoms, but we Blacks discuss our juicy counterparts. One author said few white women were around when whites and Native Canadians first came into contact, thus the men of these races didn't fight. However, much effort has been applied in the United States, historically, to keep Black men and white women from connecting (anti-miscegenation laws, the Scottsboro case, Jim Crow, lynching, etc.). I actually wonder if a student could write a paper comparing this book to books on African-American sexual matters.

I am soooo glad this book was put together. For the most part, it's a quick easy read. You definitely don't have to be Canadian to understand it or appreciate it.

Wrong Audience, I Guess

I have every single Uncle John's bathroom reader except the two on order that haven't arrived yet. I mistakenly bought some anthologies which combine other books, so look for "all new" on the covers. I might be Uncle Johns biggest fan! When "Sully" landed his plane the Hudson, it reminded me of a BR story called the "Gimley Glider" which detailed an even more amazing and difficult landing in Canada. I paraphrased it, sent it to our local paper, gave credit to the BR and they published the story. The newspaper's story got dozens of responses with people wanting to know how to get a Bathroom Reader. Fast Forward. I bought the "For Girls Only" edition, and even though I'm a guy, I thought that this book would contain the fascinating information the others did. I doesn't. Pure and simple. It's double-spaced, for some odd reason. I am no sympathizer with the feminist movement, but I thought the contents were rather condescending. To be honest, for the first time in my life, I didn't finish a Bathroom Reader. There are a couple "For Kids" BR that I don't own, but I can tell you this, ALL the others I own are fantastic. I'm not condemning For Girls Only, just suggesting that why buy it when you can use your money to buy a more substantial and interesting book from the same creator!

The Greatest God made accessible

Shiva is a God that has truly transcended time and space. He is Mahadeva - greatest of Gods. His legends exist and have survived since eons ago. This book is a treat for all who find mythologies and ancient legends fascinating. In the must-read introduction, the author Devdutt explains his approach. A reconcilliation between East and West. He mentions how Western scholars look at Hindu mythology through the lens of western thought and philosophy, often referring to Western stream of understanding and analysis. And Indians are shy of the explicit exploits of their Gods, a result of Victorian colonial propriety. In this book Devdutt explores the myth through research of Vedas, Puranas, legends and temples. He goes to the basic philosophy of Hinduism to explain and interpret the mythology in its more accurate meaning.

For example, there are many Gods in Hindu mythology and many demons and a heaven and hell, but there is no equivalent of Satan. Lord Shiva is an ascetic and he also is a householder. He is worshiped in these 2 forms as well as a host of other forms - angry Rudra, united Ardhanareshwara, simpleton Bholenath, vengeful Kaal Bhairava, etc. So not only do we have more than one God, the God's themselves have myriad versions and avatars.

Shiva is eternal with no beginning and no end, he is infinite, no before no after, he grants boons and blessings to all who worship him. So even demons pray to him for benefiting from his benevolence. This is a unique thought process of a God who differentiates between no one and nothing. He has angry form, he has a compassionate form, he is a lover and husband, he is a father too, and he is formless divine. He can revive the dead, he can take away all fear of death. He provides for all his devotees and protects them from predation.

This book is insightful and at the same time simplified text of the vast pantheon and rich ancient culture of India. I was hooked from page one and read it withing 2 days. It pulls you in with indepth interpretation of symbols, stories and rituals. It is a must have for any beginner or professional who wishes to unravel the mysteries of Shiva and understand Hindu thought process. Apart from all this there are many images from paintings and temples and excavations and sculptures that illustrate the book along with the image's descriptions.

Other books by Devdutt I look forward to reading are "7 Secrets of Vishnu" and "Myth = Mithya". Hope these books entertain and educate you all and brings understanding and order out of chaos.

This may be an absolutely essential book for those who are interested seriously in the ideas behind Shiva God of creation and destruction – the God of the centrifugal force which destroyed the Bindu and with Brahman, created the so-called Big Bang. The book is full of pictures and marvelous stories that even a Strong devotee of Shiva like myself, On myself learning new things and being transported to new worlds of wonder and excitement. I don't think there's a spare word in the whole book and if you are interested in Shiva I can suggest several other books that aren't worth half of what this one is worth I have to thank the author, Devdutt Pattanaik, but this incredible plethora of marvels equal to any book of fancy which turns out to be authentic and absolutely on the mark in a manner of showing one has to live life to the fullest. A Roman Catholic by birth and I practiced I am also a Hindu, and specifically a devotee of Shiva – I cannot recommend this book more highly.

A Must-Read for the Spiritual Seeker

Very well researched and objectively presented. Pattanaik digs into the esoteric and symbolic manifestations and representations of Shiva. As a practicing Hindu, I found this book to add greatly to my own understanding of the implicit within the art/ narrative depictions of Shiva. I'm not sure if this is a good "beginners" book - but highly recommend it for the spiritually curious. I also enjoy that the author steps away from the obligatory religious anecdotes (for instance, of Shakti mounting Shiva to invigorate him to benefit the universe - compared to the layman account of the same depictions placing Shiva at Shakti's feet to calm the angry goddess). Cannot wait to read Pattanaik's other works!

Get Help and Have Fun Getting Into College

This is an invaluable resource for any high school student planning (or not planning!) to attend college. Unlike the typical guides crammed with boring charts and statistics, what makes GET INTO COLLEGE both so useful and interesting to read are the hundreds of contributions from college students and graduates from across the country who have `been there and done it." These are people who had the same fears and anxieties about things like SATs, what schools to apply to, financial aid, filling out the applications, writing an application essay, moving away from home etc. as students beginning the process today, and their advice is clearly sincere and on the mark.

There's also tons of information from admission staff from top colleges and universities from across the country as well as the valuable perspective of parents who often go through this process every step of the way with their sons and daughters. As you make your way through the book, from beginning the process, to prepping for tests to completing the applications, etc. you feel like you have a growing team of students, mentors and academic professionals behind you cheering you on, giving you the confidence to make smart, informed decisions, and making the process rewarding and fun.

Spot On

Sometimes a book just feels right and simply nails a subject. This is one of those times. Get Into College is comprehensive, covering all the bases of the college application process--from the SAT's to picking the right school--but at the same time is very accessible and readable, with hundreds of bite sized articles and pieces of information easy to browse and digest.

It is highly unlikely that a high school student would pick up a traditional book on the college application process, but this book is different. The multiplicity of opinions from hundreds of other students makes it engaging and very interesting. You just get sucked in. You can't help but learn key pointers on the whole admission's process.

I gave it to my nephew and he just kept reading. His parents were thrilled and I think they will read it too. The mixture of student advice and the added commentary from college advisers and big school admissions officers makes this book a "must have" for all high school juniors and seniors. Bravo!

Good for parents, too!

I got this for my son - he isn't the most motivated when it comes to getting into college. But he likes all the quotes from kids his age, telling him how they did it. Much better than coming from his dad! And he has started talking at the dinner table

The truth is, though, that I have enjoyed and learned from the book as well. Lots of expert advice mixed in. Every question answered. And a great weight has been lifted off my shoulders. I think we're going to be OK when it comes to getting our son into a good school.

Known in the Philippines and around the world for his ground-breaking "Christology of the Inarticulate," and countless shorter writings and lectures (cf. his website, benbeltran.com) on his experience as pastor of the people of Manila's garbage dump called Smokey Mountain, Ben Beltran here in this new book continues his ministry of theological reflections articulating the voices of the inarticulate faithful living in the margins of Philippine society and of the globalized world. Consistent with the Filipino version of Liberation Theology called Theology of Struggle, Beltran examines how the faith of the poorest of the poor who are the victims of a failed globalist economic system that has also destroyed the environment occupy their location with much faith and hope, rather than unbelief and despair, because of their Catholic Christian faith. From this perspective, Beltran sees a different panorama of possibilities for renewing and transforming our world as an active component of Christian living in the world. Beltran's book is a major contribution to a growing theological produce looking at the interconnection between environmental and economic injustices worldwide in the light of our faith. One can place this book side by side with the recent work of Jeorg Rieger and Kwok Pui-lan "Occupy Religion" and of Leonardo Boff's "Cry of the Earth, Cry of the Poor." Likewise, this work can be compared to the recent work of a compatriot working along the same Theology of Struggle, Daniel Franklin Pilario in his "Back to the Rough Grounds of Praxis." Finding Salvation in a Garbage Dump

Faith and Struggle on Smokey Mountain, written by Benigno P. Beltran, SVD, and published by Orbis Books, with ISBN 978-1-57075-975-8, list price $25, is a book about one man's search for meaning amid, literally, the trash heap and the 25,000 scavengers with whom he lived for 30 years. Triumphant at the end, after a valiant spiritual and intellectual struggle, he shares with us his experiential wisdom, and argues the imperative of hope to save our planet.

Priest and scholar, Beltran lived with society's poorest to stay true to his beliefs, to find himself, and fathom life's mysteries. Through the scavengers' eyes, he was able to see the unseen, that reverent connection with the supernatural, and to find that religious consciousness is human experience integral to understanding the cosmos. His treatise on the God debate is a superb read about reconciling science and religion - that he adroitly relates to the garbage people's interconnectedness philosophy.

The book's humanizing element treats the people who lived on that garbage dump: their tribulations, culture, solidarity. The missionary's prophetic dialogue with them is a study of the resilient human spirit, in the dreariest of conditions. The scavengers' ability to deal with uncertainty and ambiguity provides valuable insight into how community can cope when we have trust in each other.

Father Ben takes us into his journey of seeking truth. He discovers it in his communion with the poor and, by his quest for understanding, enriches ours. He shows how a people, with only faith and each other, transcends Smokey Mountain, and teaches the world how to live in harmony. It is a fascinating intense book, rich in human experience and intellectual discourse, that tells the reader there is much more to life and reasons for living, and hopefully, I think, to do something about his own.

People are interesting, book is too repetitive

Very interesting situation that these people live in. It was amazing to learn how an entire community survived in a garbage dump and how they perceived and knew God. To have my eyes opened that this happens around the world was valuable. The first half of this book was interesting, but overall, the length and repetitiveness of the book made it a difficult read to stay engaged in. More careful editing to cut it down would have been very valuable.

Sandra Buechler, Ph.D., is a Training and Supervising Analyst at the William Alanson White Institute in New York City, and supervises at Columbia Presbyterian Medical Center and at the Institute for Contemporary Psychotherapy.  A member of the editorial board of Contemporary Psychoanalysis, she is the author of Clinical Values: Emotions that Guide Psychoanalytic Treatment (Analytic Press, 2004) and Making a Difference in Patients' Lives (Routledge, 2008), and has written papers on the analyst's experiences of loneliness, loss, joy, and other aspects of the clinician's feelings.

A Gift of Understanding, Guidance and Vision to all Therapists

Some books appear in the right place at the right time. I found this profound and personal work while approaching the ten year mark of my career as a psychotherapist (my second career). I know it will serve me in making the most of the ten that follow. I felt many of the challenges and heartaches I have faced in my career articulated in such a clear manner, that I finished the book feeling more understanding and compassionate toward my work and my struggles. This is a book about joy and fulfillment as much as it is a book about shame and sorrow. As I finished, I felt as if I was saying goodbye to someone who for the several weeks of reading had offered me companionship and understanding. To gain resilience, the author reminds us, we must face our losses and our challenges, and find meaning and a sense of purpose deep enough to counteract them.

I would recommend this book widely: to clinical supervisors, to starting and maturing psychotherapists and psychiatrists and to others who feel curious about grasping the human dimensions of the strange and wondrous lives of those who practice the art and science of therapy.

this is a great read! Buechler presents life as it really is

For people thinking about entering the clinical field or those in it, this is a great read! Buechler presents life as it really is; she doesn't sugarcoat the work or make it sound like the most amazing career in the world. She matter-of-factly tells you what to expect and what is involved. She digs deep into the shame and anxiety of being a clinician. While it gets pretty dense at times, it is well worth your time!

Must-Read for All Clinicians and Interns in the Mental Health Field

This is a fantastic book. I do not understand how it's not more known in the psychology world. I found Ms. Buechler's work to be so authentic, honest, refreshing, and very close to the bone. This is a book that should be read by every graduate student and every working clinician. No matter what your training she touches on issues that are so meaningful and the poignant anxieties that training evokes. Shame, self-attention, developing a hard shell and the narcissistic vulnerabilities that can occur throughout the training program.

Hidden wisdom of Aztec codex

John Major Jenkins is best known for his facinating work on the Mayan calendar, such as 'Maya Cosmogenesis 2012' and 'Galactic Alignment'. In this book, he explores the Aztec culture, and in particular an unknown codex discovered by his co-author friend Marty Matz, a 'beat poet' of the 1950's generation. In the book Jenkins provides a complete listing of the 13 page codex, along with his own commentary on its meaning. In addition, there is an autobiographical novella written by Marty, which reminded me of the writings of Carlos Castaneda. Jenkins is convinced of the authenticity of the codex and its part in the 'perennial philosophy'.

I was particularly intrigued by the parallels of the writings of the codex with those of other esoteric sources, particularly the writings of George Gurdjieff, Gnostic, Hermetic. Kabbalah, Hebrew and Christian scripture. Jenkins seems to have a profound grasp of the esoteric meaning behind the writings of the Mayan, Aztec and other Meso-America cultures and their part in the perennial philosophy of the ages. Jenkins is a gifted writer and scholar and I recommend this book wholeheartedly.

Interesting work not adequately rooted in the source culture

This book centers around the (possibly incomplete) translation of a supposed lost Aztec Codex called the Pyramid of Fire. In short there are too many things about this book that are incomplete and make the book seem like it's a mashup which really hurts the central truths that the text may be trying to convey.

First, codices are pictoral depictions. We have no sure pages from the Pyramid of Fire codex. The images in the book are those borrowed from other codices which are said to resemble those in this codex. There were thirteen pages of the Pyramid of Fire. There are seven drawings presented and not one of them is from this codex. Just at this point you have a tremendous problem in that the work is not rooted back to it's original conveyence which is two-fold, the pictograms and a living Mazatec codex-holder who can speak directly to the text. The lack of these two things, codex and codex-holder, ultimately unground this work from the start.

Second, Marty Matz, the poet who supposedly was befriended by a Mazatec teacher/shaman (Don Daniel), lost the 13th page of the translation he wrote down years before. John Major Jenkins supposedly listened to an old tape recording (he could barely hear) of Marty reading the codex from the 1960s. But there are facts in the written codex that were different from what Marty had spoken such as 675 vs 468 years regarding Tonalpolhualli at the end of page 5 of the codex. Another unfinished aspect is the included novella that Marty was writing about the codex abruptly ends after the first chapter. You inevitably start getting the impression that this book is having a hard time conveying complete information. It's like the codex was beginning to fade away and Don Daniel, Marty, and JMJs efforts barely rescued it from oblivion. That's at least the best case impression you could have.

Third, apart from Marty's supposed original contact with Don Daniel there is no evidence that either Marty or JMJ attempted to contact or in any other way verify the themes in this codex with any current living Mazatec personage. This lack of verification is very troubling and leads to the near complete unhinging of this codex from the culture that produced it. This is why this review is titled Cultural 'Lifting'.

Forth, JMJ proceeds to apply his own observations and insights into the text. Although he is versed in cross-cultural spiritual studies, his attempt to compare, fit, and lift the Pyramid of Fire to other spiritual systems is what ultimately breaks the presentation of the codex away from it's roots into an ascribed perennial philosophy. This attempted comparison includes the works of Gurdjieff, Taoism, the Kaballah, and even references to oracular use of Majong. The lack of pictograms or personage cause the text to be interpreted, or lifted, based on JMJs own experiences and biases. Regardless of JMJs good intentions, or breadth of knowledge, this type of presentation quickly distances the text from it's original culture and meanings.

To be clear it is certainly evident that various spiritual traditions are all attempting to explain the divine ground of being. Different spiritual paths are like different facets of a diamond conveying different aspects of the one truth. But lacking a strong infusion from original Mazatec sources (and especially the pictograms of the original codex) the book dilutes the original meaning of the text by attempting to make connections to other systems that are by no means certain. There is not sense of polish or completeness in this book.

These points have lead me to the conclusion that the codex, if authentic, has been lifted and unhinged from it's cultural roots and presented in a way that does great injustice to it. There are too many pieces that were incomplete, missing (where are the pictograms?), or supposed to make this book a fitting conveyence for the codex.

For the lack of cultural rooting and especially for the lack of the pictograms (which does seriously weaken it's authenticity) two stars is the rating for this book. The text itself may be authentic. At least it does embody principles that seem likely for the cultures in this region. The core codex text itself gets three to four stars.

If you do not know much about Meso-American spirituality nor are studied very widely in world spiritualism then there may be enough here to justify reading this book. Just keep in mind you are getting alot more other stuff than Aztec information. But ultimately the shortcomings in the material around the codex and the deflections into analogues in other belief systems and the lack of apparent verification from any living Mazatec teachers are factors which cannot escape careful examination. If the codex survived almost 500 years to reach Marty is it very likey that such an important text would still have a Mazatec lineage holder on the planet.

To JMJs credit he did emphasize the direct experience of reading, even aloud, the Pyramid of Fire text. Had this book taken more of a counselling approach to this goal and to be more poetic it would have been more effective. It could have spent more time giving the reader hints on how to harmonize with this work. It could have encouraged the direct mystical experience rather than an attempted scholarly approach. The book should have given examples from Mazatec culture on how to get into the core of the text based on how the Mazatec do things. Without this key to embodied resonance with the text this work is definately a head-piece rather than a heart-piece. My largest concerns are not with the core truth of the Pyramid Fire text but with the wrappings around it.

JMJ has looked at the subject of the Maya and 2012 in much detail. His material is worth reading keeping in mind that because of the breadth of the subjects you really do have to stay awake and not just accept everything at face value.

I hope that someone will take another try at this text and really spend time attempting to recover the original pictograms if they still exist and to spend time trying to verify the text with living Mazatec teachers. I salute the Mazatec people and all other peoples who have been carriers for the authentic wisdom of humanity through the ages. To honor the ancient ones we need to ensure that their voice, not ours, is central when presenting their wisdom.

DiaGnosis: A very important document

In the late 1950s and early 1960s, the Beat generation poet Marty Matz explored remote areas of Mexico and learned to speak the Mazatec language. He gained the trust of a Mazatec shaman, who showed him an unknown codex, and also explained to him the meaning behind the pictograms. Marty made a translation and recited it in the poetry clubs of San Francisco. The final page got lost over the years, but John Major Jenkins located a recording of one of Marty's recitals and reconstructed the whole translation.

All other codices that have survived have been interpreted solely by non-indigenous scholars, with the exception of the Popul vuh of the Maya, which was written into a word form from what was originally a pictorial document. This means that the Pyramid of Fire is a unique insight into the philosophy of the Aztecs, which turns out to be fascinating. The true meaning of sacrifice, for example, is simply a transcending of the ego - a self-sacrifice. The metaphorical pictures were misunderstood and resulted in the gory mass sacrifices of prisoners for which the Aztecs later became famous. In fact, the Aztec philosophy turns out to be very similar to that which was known to G.I. Gurdjieff, following his travels across the near East and Asia.

The Pyramid of Fire reveals that the Aztecs had a spiritual technology similar to the Kundalini yoga of the Hindus, in which Quetzalcoatl, the feathered serpent, is shown to be an identical concept. Though some have suggested this in the past, they lacked the evidence - now we have it.

The last page of the codex reveals that the final New Fire ceremony will bring a fire of purification that will burn away the remains of mortal desires and illusions, that will be the end of obscurity - the obscurity imposed by Tezcatlipoca - the Smoking Mirror, or obsidian mirror. This is a very similar concept to the end-time vision of St. Paul "For now we see in a mirror dimly, but then face to face" (1 Cor 13 v.12) or alternatively, "through a glass darkly". Since Jenkins has already reconstructed the meaning of the New Fire ceremony as a tradition for tracking precession (see Maya Cosmogenesis 2012), and that it was adapted at Chichen Itza (the pyramid of Kukulcan) to correlate with the Mayan end-date of 2012, then it seems that the Quetzalcoatl-Kukulcan-Kundalini teachings are to help prepare mankind for the current time-window earmarked by 2012, when we are due to confront The Other.
