Soussan, a former program associate for the United Nations, provides an insider's perspective on the U.N.'s oil-for-food scandal in this absorbing memoir. The author was a 24-year-old idealist when he went to work for the U.N.'s recently launched program to provide aid to Iraqi civilians suffering under the economic sanctions imposed after the Gulf War. He found a culture of incompetence where there is no truth but consensus and initiative is highly risky. Amid the turf wars and bureaucratic timidity at the U.N., Saddam Hussein was able to subvert the oil-for-food program with a regimen of bribes and kickbacks. Unable to persuade his superiors to expose the fraud, Soussan resigned in frustration after three years. When the massive fraud surfaced after Saddam's fall, the author published an op-ed piece in the Wall Street Journal, which launched an independent investigation that uncovered billions of dollars in bribes and implicated global corporations, sovereign governments and U.N. officials—including Secretary-General Kofi Annan's son. Intelligent and Witty - Something for Everyone

Michael Soussan's memoir of his time as UN Oil for Food Programme Coordinator is all at once informative, provocative, witty, intelligent, and poignant. Far from your ordinary historical review, Mr. Soussan paints a detailed and engaging insider's picture of what was going on within the iconic international organization, complete with a description of the specific contents of Benon Sevan's office and a cast of nicknamed characters (including "Spooky," "Smiley Face," and his own - "The Kid"). In addition, Mr. Soussan demonstrates a strong grasp of the conflicting international interests and current affairs at the time.

Insofar as this book also serves as a "coming-of-age" piece, again, the author manages to accomplish much more, describing a young man, naïve and hopeful, who was convinced he was going to make a difference - and he does, just not at all in the way he ever imagined. Mr. Soussan's writing is clever and will have you laughing out loud as you relate to some of the many mistakes he made in his younger days and gape at others you never would imagine happening to yourself (like nearly kissing your life goodbye as you pee in a mine-laden wasteland). At the same time, the book includes some very sobering scenes, and you will be engrossed in the tragedy Mr. Soussan aptly describes. The overall message of the book is powerful, reminding us to never forget our ability to achieve a greater good no matter what the odds.

Hits The Nail On The Head

I am surprised this book has not been given more attention and that there aren't more customer reviews on it. Then it dawned on me: the book is critical of the UN; no wonder it hasn't received more media attention. That being said, it is a very, very good read. I have seen first hand the damage that a large government bureaucracy can dish out. Mr. Soussan's account of turf wars, bickering, egos and backstabbing is spot on. One point made in the book that probably miffed the nattering nabobs of negativism is the fact that he doesn't blame everything on President Bush. The author, being Danish with French ethnicity, rightly points out that the Iraq WMD issue preceeds Bush's term and that "regime change" was in fact the official US policy under President Clinton. He certainly doesn't praise Bush, but he gives insight into why Bush had to bypass the UN after the organization initially backed him.
Saddam Hussein is depicted, rightfully, as a lying madman who was bribing France, Russia and other nations to get sanctions lifted. The author goes into detail about the propaganda war waged by Hussein to create worldwide sympathy, hoodwink passive nations, and scam billions of dollars to build palaces and God knows what else.
For an in-depth description of why the UN fails to execute its resolutions and one of the reasons why the second Gulf War came to be such a mess, this book is a must read.

Fantastic Book!

This book is really wonderful! It's a must read for students, journalists, government employees, diplomats and anyone interested in international affairs. Funny and heart wrenching at the same time --- it's a coming of age story of a young man who thinks he has found his calling in a UN job until he realizes the sobering truth behind the UN's Oil-for-Food program in Iraq. Educational and relevant --- the author writes in a manner that will have you staying up late to finish the book. And while most of today's commentary about the UN comes from a particular political vantage point, Mr. Soussan is clearly not out to simply bash the UN or to defend it. He is neither from the political right or the political left and this makes his behind the scenes account particularly stinging. Buy a copy now!

Hubbard and Duggan, respectively dean and lecturer at Columbia Business School, make the case that current foreign aid and Third World projects—particularly in Africa—aren't working and that the developed world must rethink how it allots aid money. The authors dissect (and disagree) with the U.N.'s Millennium Goals strategy for attacking poverty, pet project of Jeffrey Sachs and a host of celebrities. They condemn the strategy as a charity trap, that perverts local economies and keeps corrupt leaders rich. The authors contend that poor countries can attain prosperity and self-sufficiency only if aid money goes to cultivating a functioning business sector. Microfinance, they say, is working but stops short; they propose something much more ambitious: a new Marshall Plan, an almost prohibitively daunting task given the vast differences among developing countries, the controls each puts on business and the input required from other developed nations. But the plainly stated thesis and the authors' willingness to confront conventional wisdom and examine and energetically attack the problem are refreshing and necessary. (Sept.)

It's More Than Just Economics, It's Culture

There is much good to say for the excellent work in refocusing country development from Aid to Business which is unheard of in the dev/biz. But unfortunately, the authors solution, an applied Marshall plan, will fail. There is a huge difference between current Africa and 1948 Europe/Japan in their respective positions along the "development curve". This difference, as referenced in "The Aid Trap", was infrastructure, technical and business/experience resources but did not address differences in cultural development from tribal, political, ethical and religious perspectives.

Recently the U.S. and EU have effectively been cut out of Africa by China and to a lessor degree India. As Engineers and Constructors (E&C's) working with equipment manufacture/suppliers we cannot compete with Asia in Africa. This situation has been changing and we now have been reduced to technical goods and services limiting direct participation in the market. Africa is being exposed to Chinese business culture, especially second and third teams, rather than the highly developed business culture of the U.S. The Chinese are some 30-50 years behind in cultural development with significant corruption. All is not bad, however, Africa has benefited from Chinese built infrastructure (good but not great) projects at greatly reduced cost. The Ethiopian $500M Tekeze hydro electric project built by the Chinese for $300M is just one example. What developer wouldn't smile to have a constructor chop 40% off a feasible project with the same revenue.

Historically observing and experiencing country development first in Japan from the 1930's, then Korea and now China has shown the rate of growth is dependent on the cultural environment. Africa is being handicapped by Asia. No amount of business Czar's (ECA) wisdom, as proposed by the authors, will be smart enough to overcome the cultural change required to support growth in Africa. The excellence of moving from Aid to Business, overcoming the devastating damage of enabling welfare will fail because it's not the U.S./EU business but Asia's business. China's business culture is developing with significant difference between eastern, central and western China -- Africa will not see a first team for many decades. This is to say nothing about the almost impossible tasks of a Marshall Plan selecting from top-down the right businesses at the right time to develop from nothing.

But there's always a way.

While Africa is reflecting on it's economic/political environment, tribal issues and country boundaries governing trade to enhances regional markets, African business leaders (and the authors) may want to look at India's "Bottom-of-Pyramid" business development approach. India is taking advantage of low cost redesign and manufacturing, microlenders, market development working with large multinationals. This gets to the real needs of the people and most importantly, learning the environment for a successful ethical business culture in competition, risk and profits. This was nicely summarized in the front page of the WSJ article, "Moving Up in India" Oct 20th, 2009 and also addressed in detail in C.K.Prahalad's book, "The Fortune at the Bottom of the Pyramid", with references to McKinsey business consultants. Cultural development through business plus farming expansion and agriculture research will provide, in the long term, the foundation to develop competitive offerings through trade.

The Aid Trap business approach puts some real sense into country investment; it needs time and cultural development to be successful. An applied Marshall plan doesn't fit. In Europe and Japan their cultures and industries were developed; in Africa it's going to be a process. A business approach can overcome the destructive dependency of welfare Aid while significantly improving culture under the proper circumstances. When the slack tightens in the worlds labor markets, Africa's opportunities will significantly improve. Cultural development through business is best done by African's themselves with help in consulting/tutoring by developed nations, especially the U.S.

The Aid Trap review....

I had a chance to read the book this past week and I am happy to say that I came away with a fresh perspective on how aid can be delivered to the very poor. While I cannot be sure of all of the success of the Marshall plan, I do appreciate and understand that private business development can lead to wealth. The authors argue that severe business restrictions are common elements of poor nations. The wealthiest nations generally have the fewest government restrictions on business formation, hiring employees, availability of credit, management and the least restrictions in the import and export of products.

I found it helpful to take a look at the Marshall plan as he outlined it in his commencement address to Harvard in 1947. His concern was that through war, the basic economic system of Europe had been shattered and his intention was to re-introduce an economic system into parts of Europe.

The best example I can think of is that of China and India. It seems that since their governments' relaxed business restrictions in the past 20ish years, wealth has increased for many.

The book goes on to talk about Bono, Bill Gates and Warren Buffet as people with great intentions but their methods of helping the poor has only resulted in extending poverty. I Expected More

No sources. This book is almost as if Dr. Hubbard has internalized all of economics. The arguments are entirely theoretical and no references are given. It was written well, but if it were my student they would get no more than a C. For a world-class economist, this book was incredibly disappointing. References are important.

Here is another book I found written far better and CERTAINLY better sourced. Perhaps the author, a relative unknown economist, should not be compared to Dr. Hubbard, given Dr. Hubbard's accomplishments, but I certainly expected Hubbard's book to be more like this one. Check it out and compare your thoughts.

ROBERT KIPNISS, painter and printmaker, has had over 200 one-man shows since his first one in New York in 1951. He is represented in the permanent collections of the Metropolitan Museum of Art; Whitney Museum of American Art; Los Angeles County Museum of Art; New Orleans Museum of Art; British Museum; Bibliotheque Nationale, Paris; and Pinakothek Moderne, Munich, among others. He was elected to the National Academy of Design in 1980, and to the Royal Society of Painter-Printmakers, London, in 1998. He lives in New York and Connecticut.

The Courage to Create

Kipness is a poet as well as a painter and printmaker, and the family members, art dealers, friends and lovers he introduces in this book are as complex and fully drawn as the characters in a Russian novel.

Written at the height of a successful career, this book tells us a good deal about the inner workings of the art world. The descriptions of painting, lithography and print making, and of the way art is sold and shown are balanced by Kipniss's own story of pluck and personal resilience. Best of all, here is an alternative to the long suffering artist ---though the author has had his share of crises and last-minute saves, each page is a testament to a way of working that is grounded in exuberance and joy. This engaging, and hard-to-put-down memoir answers the fundamental question, "How does one have to live in order to create?"

Kipness once illustrated a volume of Rilke's. While beholding the Apollo Belvedere, Rilke heard an inner voice, whispering: You must change your life. Both in his art and in this deeply enjoyable book, Kipness has given us a life lived to the fullest. Artists and appreciators could re-read this book a dozen times for its clarity, intellect and passion.

Not to Be Missed

For those who love Robert Kipness's exquisitely crafted paintings and prints, it will come as no surprise that this wonderful memoir shows the same level of craftsmanship. But how often does a brilliant artist display equal literary gifts? Kipness does. Parts of his autobiography are harrowing, others inspiring. Along the way he offers descriptions of artistic processes, sometimes quite technical, that made them come clear to me for the first time. A book not to be missed.

The "How's" of Creating

Robert Kipness is more remarkable to me now, than he was before I read this book. I have long been drawn to his etchings and mono prints, but I never spent time thinking about what was behind them. What we see is a disciplined and kind man who works hard hard, doesn't like criticism, and deserves all the praise heaved upon him. I have met Mr. Kipness and what a treat that was. He has promised to sign my book when he returns from travels west. I can't wait.

Good for the CAIA program

It is sufficient for CAIA along with the other two original books (Ethics and Core/Integrated Topics). The volume is not at all challenging (unlike CFA) so you do not need to rely on third party providers for preperation. I think they need to move away from empirical data and focus more on the philosophy behind managing AI funds. There were too many practice questions about the year some law was enacted etc. However I passed both levels using the original books so in that sense they are great.

It gives good insight on the Alternative Investment Funds and the due diligence process thereof. While the entire hedge funds section is very interesting, some other areas such as commodities, though informative, are not as interesting to read. Overall, a good book on Alternative Funds and the references are very useful!

About the Author
Sarah James is the principal of a city and town planning consulting firm specializing in participatory planning methods. She co-authored the American Planning Association's Planning for Sustainability Policy guide, and has published articles and given workshops throughout the United States on this subject. Torbjörn Lahti is the project director for Sustainable Robertsfors, a five-year sustainable community demonstration project. He was the project planner for Sweden's first eco-municipality, Övertorneå, and was instrumental in the formation of SeKom, the Swedish national association of eco-municipalities.

How to foment sustainable revolution

In the 1980s, Lahti's hometown of Overtornea, Sweden was dying. The worldwide recession left the village in an inhospitable climate with no major industry and a declining population. Lahti organized community residents and developed a plan to revitalize Overtornea using principles of environmental, economic, and social sustainability. Thus was born the sustainability revolution in Sweden that is taking hold in Europe and spreading to other parts of the world. This is not a story, but a how-to manual. The king of Sweden has endorsed Lahti's methods and seen a resurgence of vital business throughout the country while reducing waste and fossil fuel consumption.

Tremendous Book...

Currently, my city is undergoing a move from an average municipality to becoming an eco-municipality. This change would have never been possible without this inspirational book. Our city is working at creating a system approach to change rather than doing one little thing at a time just like The Natural Step advises.

It has helped other cities in Wisconsin to become more sustainable and it truly has a lot of ideas in it. It uses a lot of referesnces to Sweden, but still leaves room to discuss how North America is pushing for change as well. This is a MUST read for anybody who works in municipal government or is an active community leader.

Surprisingly Delightful Book

Bought this book as required reading for my UCLA Extension class called Sustainable Communities. Fantastic class, and fantastic book. Whether you're new or advanced in sustainability practices, this is a book that keeps on giving. There's a plethora of great examples from communities (mostly in Sweden) that exhibit sustainable practices and used the tools of the Natural Step Framework to bail themselves out of some pretty bad situations. I also purchased The Natural Step for Business (for another class) and it was also good, but I feel The Natural Step for Communities gives you an even better systems perspective of this method and how best to apply it in the real world.

My one criticism is that I wish there were a greater geographical variety of communities discussed in this book. Since The Natural Step was created in Sweden, it makes sense that it has had the most prevalent impact there. As such, many of the communities discussed are Swedish and at the end of each chapter examples from around the world are given in a concluding paragraph. I think an updated version using fleshed-out international examples would benefit the readers of this book, but honestly you can't go wrong with the version as is.

As with anything in sustainability, there is no one size fits all solution. When reading this, use your abstract thinking skills to apply these concepts and methods to communities of different population sizes, geographical expanse, diversity, affluence, and so on. Particularly here in the US, people would do well to give this book a read.

Brilliant book, well done Le Monde!

I am a published writer of 14 non-fiction books and at work on a novel and a book of short stories. I read about this book and then bought it, what a joy this small book is. Absolutely brilliant writing from 98% of the writers -it is amazing that when a writer is restricted with a topic and I suspect, a limited number of words, how much better they write. No doubt, it is that old magician, editing, editing, editing...
I have recommended this book to other friends who are writers and they are similarly entranced. Each writer, in this Lexicon, writes about a single word, supposedly that encapsulates their writing, but actually, most have used it to write about a word they enjoy - happiness; that they hope might shock - cunnilingus; that they have reflected on - lies; or a word most of us have never heard of, adumbrated - that the writer can play with.
Perhaps this book is one that only a publication of the value of Le Monde would consider, and if that is so, then long may the carefully compiled and strictly edited word long be with us, to read such quality is to realise how much language is lost in internet waffle. We need good newspapers, Le Monde, The Guardian, New York Times, to help us remember that there is a more important world in the carefully considered, the slow unpicking of words, careful reflection and others who will challenge our musings, long before they ever go into the world of print. Writing is not about ego, it is about structure and discipline, this witty, wise and clever book reminds us of that again.

Le Monde, the French newspaper, sponsored an International Forum on the Novel in which 70+ writers were asked to write short essays on the word that defined their work. Think of it as some of the world’s best writers were put on the spot to write flash fiction. None of these essays exceed three pages. It would seem like an invitation to egotism, but it isn’t. The overt beauty of the collection is the insight into the creative process and self-perception. The joy, however, is encountering many authors not known in the English-speaking world. The anthology is an invaluable introduction to world literature since the writers gathered here are from around the world: Albanian, American (in the minority), Arabic, British, Dutch, French, German, Italian, and Vietnamese.

When these writers write about writing they are using words in their language that are merely translated into English, but they endeavor to provide the reader with a significant snapshot to all the nuances and associations of the chosen word in their mind and from their culture. One can’t help but appreciate translators more and yet know that the original text is but an approximation, far richer in tone, texture, and vision. These essays are brief, readable on the train, and run the range from the humorous to the philosophical, political and poetic. Rikki Ducornet, for example, writes on cunnilingus. Andre Brink chose ‘heretic’ and relates it to his choice to defy apartheid. Hélène Cixous questions deception and knowledge with ‘aletherature.’ Readers will come to understand all the permutations of the French word échappé from Marie Desplechine and Elisabetta Rasy explains that ‘ombra’ in Italian means more than the English ‘shadow.’

My favorite essay is ‘Silence’ from David Albahari. A brief quote: “Nobody knows what love really is, and yet we all keep falling in love, hoping that we will realize what true love is. In the same way we keep trying to go beyond words, to see the other side of language, hoping that then, and only then, will we be able to express everything.”
